Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Adjustable travel; plush in 100mm mode, stiff in 80mm mode. Adjustable rebound.
Weaknesses:Travel adjust is inconvienient at bottom of fork leg. BLACK stickers fall off, poor quality control
Similar Products Used:Marzocchi EXR, 2005 Black 120, Marzocchi MZ3, Fox F100R...
Bike Setup:2002 Sugar 4+
Bottom Line:Bottom line is poor quality control. The fork had a small hole in the lower leg. Initially, it was covered up by paint, and it went unnoticed. However, eventually, the fork leaked out all of its oil through this hole. No, not blown seals or anything like that. A HOLE in the metal! Not cool manipoo. Sure, seals and such fail, but this is inexuseable. The fork was not abused, or ridden all that much in the few years I owned it.

Strengths:Nice plush travel, when it works.
Weaknesses:Small bump sensitivity is non existent, Leaks like a beached tanker, fades on long downhills, stiction, flexes, disc brakes rip the bushings in the left leg appart.

Bottom Line:This fork worked well for a few months after bedding in, but it required a lot of attention after that. Prep grease just leaks straight out, the bushings have crumbled. Got to the point where I had to fully rebuild it after every ride. My mate rides Marzocchi MX comp and they have lasted the same time without being replaced! I have just bought some and I cant wait for them to arrive.. Fair value chili as I got them 1/2 price but poor performance means 1 chili

Now it feels like I have jello for my front suspension. I thought that something this heavy would be a bit tougher; especially from Manitou. I am 180 and try to ride pretty aggressive, so I understand to bottom out off the big stuff; but curbs! Come on! I recently bought a Marzocchi MX pro and it is amazing. Spend your money on a real shock, buy a Marzocchi.

Favorite Trail:Difficult Run in Virginia
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:Bicycle Garage Indy
Strengths:Adjustable travel is cool at first, till you find the setting you prefer. Damping adjustments are sufficient for me. Stickers came off, I like a cleaner, less busy look. Stiff and plush, don't feel any play between bushings and stantions. The lack of caliper standoffs gives it a cleaner look(bike has Avid disk brakes).
Weaknesses:Came with a weak spring. Had to negotiate paying $ 30.00 less for the bike to cover the cost of a stronger spring.
Plastic adjustment knobs. Although when you buy a stiffer spring, it comes with an aluminum cap that replaces the plastic preload cap(preload didn't do much anyway). A little heavy, but most 100 mm forks are.
Similar Products Used:Rockshox Judy (2000)
Bike Setup:Giant NRS 2 2002, stock except Time Pedals and Hutchinson Scorpion Tires(the best).
Bottom Line:After a year, I haven't had any trouble with this fork. When It was brand new, changing the travel took excessive force, which wasn't comfortable to use since the lever is plastic. I leave the fork in the 100 mm setting now, the NRS2 seems to handle better at this setting. The 80 mm setting doesn't seem to increase the steering response(on this frame anyway) so I leave it set at 100 mm. The fork is plush and stiff and hasn't given me a reason to replace it. Which, is saying alot because I kind of like changing and modifying things. Don't like plastic knobs, especially because you would still pay around $300.00 for the fork.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Post-type disc brake mounts, Easy to take apart/service, 100mm travel.
Weaknesses:front-to-back flex, comes with weak spring and light oil.
Similar Products Used:Rock Shox Forks
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel with mixed XT/XTR drive components, Fox Float rear shock, AVID disc brakes, Thomson stem and post, Chris King headset.
Bottom Line:Bike manufacturers should put stronger spings in the forks they sell on larger frame bikes, and softer springs on smaller bikes. I'm sure there's some fat midgets and skinny giants, but in most cases, putting a "medium" spring on a "large" frame isn't a great idea.

The fork felt really plush with the stock spring, but it bobbed way to much while climbing, and there was alot of sag. This was an easy fix, I just ordered the new spring. I also had to keep the rebound adjustment knob all the way up untill I put in heavier weight oil. It doesn't bottom out anymore. Alot of the reviews here complain about it bottoming out, I would highly suggest changing the spring.

The fork works well and I haven't had to do much to it after setting it up. However, there is one thing I don't like. When lifting the front wheel off the ground (like in a workstand, etc.) with the front wheel spinning, the fork vibrates from front to back when I suddenly lock the brake. This hasn't been a problem while riding, but it indicates that there is some play either in the crown or where the stancions (sp?) connect with the bottom tubes. Again this isn't a real problem, but it doesn't inspire confidence. This MAY be my headset, but I doubt it, because it's pretty tight.

The stickers are puffy plastic jobs that have a "topographical" profile (they're not just printed from a flat sheet) And they came off right away. That's cool with me, I just left them off. If you want to have stickers on it, order a sticker kit for the higher end Black models, I think their stickers are the traditional flat vinyl type and they should stay on...but they're white instead of black.

There is a bit of stiction in the first half inch of travel, even when lubed. I thnk the Evil Genius seals (standard on the 03 version) should correct this, I plan on installing a set of those.

I'm happy with it.

Strengths:Super plush, nice adjusters, looks the horn.
Weaknesses:a bit heavy, buttons in plastic look vulnerable .And it breaks ,oh yes...
Similar Products Used:Rock Shoxs, Arse st's e.t.c..
Bike Setup:commencal normal (the forks come on the bike)
Bottom Line:If I'd read the reviews here before I purchased perhaps I might have thought again...
Travel adjustment bust (hard to get back to 80mm, noise e.t.c.,) the plastic button for preload split and just spun, this was all almost immediately.
The bike shop sent it back...I read these other reviews and began to worry...upgrades entered my mind....

The fork came back repaired within two weeks and is all sorted: still very plush, especially after break in. Bottoms out a bit ,but not too much, and all the faults are fixed. it really is a very nice fork (providing it stays that way)
Oh and the decals:
If you like them and they fall off ,glue them back on with superglue. If you don't like them ,then think of all the weight you've saved ;)

I got mine new with my NRS about 4 months ago and it has spent 50% of its life in the back of a UPS truck. The Travel Adjust has broken internally twice, the dampining once. It is currently on its forth trip back to Manitou. It takes at least 3 weeks to get it back each time and it lasts about 4 rides. So my bottom line is don't buy a Black, But if you are going to by one regardless of my and all of the other advice on this site you should buy the new 03 Black Elite that Manitou is sending me. It will be here in three weeks after all the guys at mantiou get done with Tea time. I don't know why in the world you would want a Black, but if you do I'll sell you a brand new one cheap. Strengths:*The adjustable kicks!
*Completely badass looking with reverse arch
*100 mm mode great for techical trail riding
*80 mm mode great for climbing
Weaknesses:*Cheap travel and rebound knobs--it's not IF they break, but WHEN.
*100 mm mode not great for climbing
*80 mm mode not great for descents

Bottom Line:*Overall, a relatively parallel "upgrade" from my 2000 Judy Race; definitely more plush on the descents, and the stiffer 80 mm travel mode just rocks on the climbs
*Unfortunately, the reverse is not true
*It may be the baddest looking fork ever, but who cares (and as for the sticker issue: spare me! It may be a goof on Manitou's part (ie, looks cheap) but it's for a MTB, not a road bike! Sheesh!)
*I'm more concerned about the cheap knobs--WHEN they break, this will affect the fork's abilities
*THM: the 2003 Duke is a better fork--save your money and buy it instead.

Strengths:Looks Cool, Adjustable travel is sweet, I like how it lifts the front of the bike when I go to the 100mm, and it is quite plush.
Weaknesses:Lots so far. The travel adjust stopped working on my second ride, and I think that the rebound dampining blew as well. It is too soft and bottons out over small drops. The stickers seem to be lick and stick, and the dinky plastic rebound knob is already cracked.

Bottom Line:This Fork has been a pain in the butt(my review will probably get deleted if I swear). I bought a bike with it on it a month ago and have hardly ridden it because it took Manitou 3 weeks to repair when the dampining blew on m second ride. Got it back now and there is a little oil leaking onto the fork boots. I am wondering if it is just assembly lube or something, but it sems to be getting worse so I think it is broke again, 2 rides after I got it back from manitou. Manitou customer service could be better. It seems to me that 3 weeks is to long to wait on a brand new bike, and they don't seem to want to talk about this leak. So I guess my bottom line is this. I have hardly riden the thing because it has been broke. When it works it feels pretty sweet, just a little soft. the rapid travel adjustment is awsome, but I will never buy another Manitou product unless they really redeem themselvs and make this thing work quick. Don't buy a Black there are better forks in the price range

Strengths:Stiff, esp for standard axle; smooth travel. Good overall quality product for price, except for those moveable stickers, of course. Adjustable travel is great and works.
Weaknesses:no substantial weakness so far. cheap plastic adjustment knobs at bottom of fork legs (have to be careful, see reviews below on those breaking); they get moved by accident easily. Hard to tell if rebound damping adjust has significant effect. 2nd generation black may get key improvements.
Similar Products Used:Marz. Z1 QR20, Judys, Psylo SL
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel
Bottom Line:Only 3 rides and total of 30 miles so far, but it is a sweet fork for the price & NO complaints. My local trails are the rocky Wissahickon, so I have given the fork a good testing, dropping and riding over lots of rocks and roots with abandon.
I weigh about 165 with riding gear and a loaded HAWG & have not experienced any bottoming. Although i have turned the preload all the way, the stock springs do not seem to be way too soft as some have complained. Fork is sensitive to intial travel and smooth. Also, does ramp up appropiately into the travel.
It is much plusher in 100mm mode and as I've heard somewhere, it appears 80mm ramps up the preload considerably and travel is also firmer. As a number of reviews noted, there may have been a problem w/ OE forks on GIant NRS's. I ride downhill & freeride on my RM6 and even throw my new cross-country Fuel down rock gullies, flying over small 2-3' drops, and at least my fork has had no problems soaking it up, even in 80mm mode, for a midweight rider.
Would be nice if it was lighter, but compares reasonably w/ competitor's offerings.

First impressions were awful. Bottoming out over anything cheap stickers and plastic knobs. I had to buy the EXTRA FIRM spring kit which set me back $30. Now the fork rides much better. If you weigh over 180 you must get the firm springs or this thing is just a huge joke. Im waiting for cheap plastic knobs etc to break any day now like my friends Black Comp has. Adjusting between 80mm/100mm is a two person job and was a big pain in the a@# on mine. Maybe this isn't true for everyone. At first I thought it was broken because I figured Manitou would design travel adjustment that could be performed by one person. I was wrong. I needed one person to flip the switch when I had the fork compressed. It didn't work any other way for me. I wouldn't be surprised if its broken. For those that say this isn't a DH fork or this thing never bottoms out.... get off the rail trail. Bottom Line if it comes with the bike there you are with a Black Comp. Strengths:looks good till the stickers fall off. Easy to adjust rebound and travel. sticks well in corners
Weaknesses:Stickers fell off first washing, Sends me over the handle bars every time it bottoms, It's not as if it's just plain too soft it hit's hard when coming off a drop (or just on the launch of a jump) then after the initial harsh engagement it just drops right to the bottom and slams off the bottom. It feels as if manitou was depending on the compression to give the ride stiffness and ride height rather than use the spring. In my oppinion it should have two lighter weight springs instead of 1 hard spring. Very poor technology went into the thinking of this fork. The boys over at manitou should ride my 2001 Judy XC fork and they'd probably fall in love and then you'd see two springs and different dampening.
Similar Products Used:judy xc, marzocchi x-fly, rst ( i believe this is even a better feel than the black)
Bike Setup:NRS 2 with 2.4 wtb tire up front, 2.1 smoke rear tire, stock otherwise
Bottom Line:The bottom line is I've had this bike back to the dealer (thank god they've worked with me the whole time) 3 times and finally it sorta feels like a fork. I believe they took a wrong turn over at manitou when they created this fork because it just fells like sh*t. It hits hard upon initial engagement and then just drops and bottoms.

Strengths:very plush, 100mm travel is all you need for downhilling whilst on a cross country ride, 80mm feels firm but still soaks up the bumps, easy to switch from 80mm-100mm
Weaknesses:so far the adjustment knob on the top of the fork and the switch on the right side seem to do sweet FA! also I have to bounce on the thing going from 100mm-80mm to stop a weird noise occurring, feels as though the spring is too taunt or something
Bike Setup:Stock NRS 2
Bottom Line:At first it felt too soft after coming off a Z5 Bomber, but I soon got used to the softer feel and now the ride feels much much smoother, and better.

So far I have had no mechanical problems at all with the fork, I have a large sized NRS 2, and weigh about 170-180lbs with riding stuff on, and basically even on aggressive downhill parts I never bottom the thing out, if you are a real heavy weight, don't blame the fork, try losing some weight or get into downhilling, or better still, weightlifting, as the fork can only take so much.

If you are mainly a recretional rider and your bike comes with this fork as stock, I'd keep it, I would not buy it if I was trying to build a top end racing bike, I'd go for something lighter.....but overall I'm quite happy with the thing apart from the adjustment features that don't seem to do anything.

Strengths:Not to many. It looks pretty cool for a while. It is plush, but almost to much. Seems to be set up for a begginer, or someone who doesn't ride to hard.
Weaknesses:Bottoms way toooo easy. Toooo much plastic, Mine has not broken yet, but others have. The cool stickers fall off, but that really doesn't matter.
Similar Products Used:Marzocchi z1,z3,mcr,Rocshox psylo,sid
Bike Setup:GF sugar 4+, pretty stock except for tires and handlebars. It is mostly LX
Bottom Line:If you are light weight and ride soft trails, it would be ok. I don't get to the trails to often. I do more urban riding. Campus stairs and drops are a little better for the time that I have between college and work. The fork bottoms if you hopp off a curb to hard. I had different weights of oil put in it, and I was going to have the coils changed. I ended up jumping a set of stairs about 6 or 7 feet high, and when I came down, it bottommed out. When I came up it topped out. After that it didn't work well at all and made really weird noises.Maybe I don't land very soft, but I didn't expect to jump one big thing, and have to send it back. I sent it off through the bike shop about three weeks ago, and have heard nothing, but I do live in Alabama. Maybe they will just send me a MARZOCCHI DIRT JUMPER II. Ha Ha

Strengths:Works fine, now. Looks good.
Weaknesses:Had to replace the spring w/ the extra firm spring kit to keep from bottoming out all the time (196 lbs). Solved that problem but lost my tension adjuster, oh well. Manitou sent me a better set of replacement stickers for the ones that fell off, thanks guys. I run the 100 mm position so the lever that holds the shock in the 80 mm position won't fail like it did on my buddys Black (stock on the Trek Fuel). The fork just happens to work for me the way it is now, however, if you plan on running 80 mm only buy something else.

Strengths:Strengths? I don't know about strength, but it is a good joke.
Weaknesses:I rode this shock for exactly 96 miles. After about 80 miles the rebound broke in the middle of a ride. After another 14 miles the 80-100mm also broke. Oh yeah, the little dial on the top of the fork for dampening looks really cute, and it never broke, but then again, it never worked to begin with.
Similar Products Used:Similar? As in just like it? Anything that costs a lot of money and is disposable. Hmm...I guess a similar product would be college world series tickets, they are expensive and you only get to use them once.
Bike Setup:Trek 7000, hayes hydraulic front brake, rhyno-lite wheels with XT hubs, and a worthless front shock.
Bottom Line:Remeber when you were a little kid and your mother would tell you: "don't touch it, you'll break it." Well, the same thing goes here, I live in Nebraska, as in flat and windy. This shock made it 96 miles before everything was broken. Not to mention that the wind in Nebraska is enough to remove the decals right off of this shock. Now, as an added benefit, I get to wait two weeks or more to get my bike back. If you want a bike that looks cool, but you never plan on actually using it, this is the shock for you. If you ride however, this is not the product for you. I weigh 178 lbs. and I have no trouble bottoming out this fork, even before everything inside of it turned to butter.

They should re-name this fork from BLACK to BRING BACK, because if you buy this fork, you will probably end up back at the dealer that suckered you into buying the "new cool looking fork from manitou."

Strengths:Fork came with the Giant NRS 2. I am having a really hard time coming up with a strength for this fork. I rode it with the standard spring, it bottomed. Changed the oil...It bottomed. Put in an ultra (extra?) firm spring...changed the oil...wheatever. It bottoms. Wish I could fit my Manitou 4 on my bike...Whoops. This is the strengths section! Sorry.
Weaknesses:This shock bottoms out at the sight of a root, twig or drop off. I weigh around 235 lbs and have installed the extra firm spring (an additional $30) and it made NO DIFFERENCE. ZERO. I have to keep the front tire pumped up to at least 45 psi to keep pinch flats to a minimum. If I could get this front shock to respond half as well as the NRS system I would be happy.

Bottom Line:If you weigh less than 11 stone then this fork will work well for you, its push and easy to adjust. If you weight a little more then the fork is not worth it as it will bottom out very easily unless you get a stiffer spring. If I'd had a bit more cash I would have bought the elite version as it has compression adjustment and so can be set so it will never bottom out.

Bottom Line:I just had the shock upgraded to the firm spring kit. I'm not so sure it was an upgrade?? You lose the adjustable compression in it so all you can adjust is the rebound and the travel. What's that about?? It still feels soft even at the 80mm of travel where the spring is compressed somewhat. The adjusters are made of plasic which worries me that they will brake with any little incident on the trail. Again, if you are a light weight and want a good fork for some light to mod. down hill or xc riding buy it, if not do not.Well, I must say that the technology is there but it needs to be refined.

Bottom Line:I've pretty much had it with this thing. Here's the deal, I weigh in at 185. With clothes (hopefully) and a pack on me thats about 195. Answer says this fork is shipped for riders weighing in at 155-170. That includes whatever their wearing so that translates to a rider weighing between 145-160. Answer claims that after "market research" thats what their average rider weighs. Bulls**t. Not in the real world. I'm trying not to be bitter but after dealing with 2 people at Answer and 1 at Fisher nobody will ship me a cheap ass set of $25 extra firm springs to fix this stupid fork. I don't want to be a hardasas about it, but I thinks it's ridiculous that a company that big wont make this small effort to satisfy a customer. Don't buy this fork. Never buy an Answer fork. I really hope they read this because based on the crappy customer service alone I won't ever buy another product that ships with a crappy Answer product. Feel the bitterness....

I think they need to revise the text on their website to say:
"Our company’s original philosophy remains: For the first-time mountain biker, enthusiast or world-class racer(that weighs between 145 ansd 160 lbs)...we build the highest-performance, lightest weight mountain bike suspension forks in the world."

I'm gonna give it 2 chilis for value cuz it works well UNTIL it bottoms out.

Strengths:Very plush, easy travel and rebound adjustment. Very good maintenance schedule.
Weaknesses:Flexy, they have a very loud top out clunk (apparently normal?) and they make a loud sucking noise on rebound (even with the correct oil level in them). I have the disk break only model and the Mount (for Hays disks) is not square to the disk, so it is REALLY hard to adjust them so that the disk doesn't rub on the caliper.
Similar Products Used:Rock Shox Judy XC, Edson, C-dale head shock
Bike Setup:Stock NRS2 (2002)
Bottom Line:The fork works well, the external adjusters are great, although they would be better with some clicks. The reversed break arch is very nice, but they are to noisy and don't work well with disks as they are to flexy and the mount makes adjustment difficult. Also the decals come off really easily. They would be good with rim breaks and are probably best suited to the weekend worrier, who wants a good reliable fork, that doesn't require a PhD to tune.

Since my bike climbs well, in hind site, I'd buy the 100 - 120 mm version instead since I have no need for the 80 mm, although its super easy to convert (if you stop).
