Favorite Trail:Shoulder-hugging Singletrack
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:ebay
Strengths:Simplistic. Lightweight. Elastomer!!!!!! Plush but not too plush. Not snappy. The PERFECT ride for 140-155 lbs riders. Great tracking. No flex. Cool mango color.
Weaknesses:Not snappy. The fork starts to get stiffer when it gets really cold (about 20 degrees F or so). Unusual disc brake mount size (usually needs adapter $$). No lockout. mango color doesn't match anything. Looks out-of-place these days with the fork boots and fat support arch. Could be a tad more responsive.
Similar Products Used:Coda Headshok Super-Fatty M, Fox 80-RL, Manitou Scareb Elite, rigid Cannondale aluminum P-Bone (fantastic single speed fork if you can find one, FRICKEN LIGHT!), '01 SID race. Rock Shox Duke
Bike Setup:Neptune frame, Dura-Ace singlespeed drivetrain, XT/Sun Pro wheels, Thompson, Kore, WTB Primal Raptor
Bottom Line:If you like simplicity and your anywhere from 140 lbs to 155 lbs this is the PERFECT fork for you. I've ridden some really nice forks and this is still my favorite!

I love this fork, I will never give it up, no matter how much you offer me, so don't ask!!!!

BEST ELASTOMER FORK EVER!!!

Weaknesses:Found out quickly that my stock front fork would bottomed out after medium G-out's. Thus stopping the front tire and throwing myself off. In that same month,I broke the plastic piston. Not enough travel for the weight, dampling was to soft and the rebound was unsteady, especially when travelling over 15 mph. Needless to say I threw out that fork where it belongs (dump), I would not wish this fork on my worst enemy.
Similar Products Used:Rock shock 10, Rock shock 21, rst mozo pro, rst 381DH, Judy SL-- a rigid fork work's better !!!!
Bike Setup:00 Specialized Stumpjumper XC with some personal modification, forks came stock with bike.
Bottom Line:This suspension fork is not on the same playing level has the bike it's self. By changing the front suspension I can now challenge my bike without the fear of not making it back home.

Strengths:NONE
Weaknesses:The mechanism that is attached on the inside of the outer cylinder and the outside of the inner cylinder keeping the two together when the front wheel is lifted is a POS. That mechanism gave about an hour into my ride. As I was going down a trail at about 10-15mph, I went to lift up over a root and heard pop noise. In a split second I was over my handle bars. The two outer cylinders shot strait out and there went my front wheel. luckely I walked away alive. My neck came down on my front tire and now looks like road kill. Then the outer cylinders came back around and dam near busted my wind pipe. Upon crashing I fell to my left a bit and smashed the side of my shoulder into a root, tearing muscle tissue away from the bone and bruising the bone. Do your self and your loved ones a favor and never prchase this fork and try to steer away from manitou all together because I know after an incident like that, I am.
Thank You.

Favorite Trail:any thats rough and technical
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:came on bike
Strengths:decent weight (3.5lbs), matches paint job of bike(ha)
Weaknesses:overly flexy, unresponsive to bumps, blows through travel on medium-big hits
Similar Products Used:Marzocci Z-5 100 air, Rockshox Psylo, Judy, RST's (all are better)
Bike Setup:this for came off a 2001 Mongoose Pro Valient, but is on a 2003 Schwinn S-30 with: WTB Nanoraptor 2.0, wheels :Formula hub/Weinman rim, Ritchey Vector saddle, Kore lite 1 bar, Control Tech seatpost, shimano shifters & deraillers, Avid Flak Jacket brake cables
Bottom Line:Don't buy these, get a RST fork if you want a suspension fork you can put on and not have to work on it once it's on the bike. I have the 2001 model and it has no damping, like most of the RST's, but the ride quality is seriously lacking anything close to control. On small bumps, the fork doesn't respond, and on medium to large hits, it blows straight through the travel, sometimes dangerously quickly.
Example: I have a little, two foot drop that's followed by another two foot drop, one right after the other, I rode a 80mm Judy, and it handled it just fine, but the SX-E bottomedout, causing me to take on the next drop with no travel left in the fork. That would be okay if the fork was really plush, but it's not, so I just don't have anything good to say other than it's pretty light at 3.5 lbs. A Judy is a better buy, and a Marzocchi EXR blows it away. RST makes some good forks for the people who might be looking for a fork like this, so check them out.

Purchased At:Stock fork on my '99 FSR XC
Strengths:Better than rigid forks (just), microlube ports, disc mounts
Weaknesses:Soft and unresponsive - don't exactly take the sting out of the trail; preload adjuster breaks easily; unpredictable steering; doesn't take 2.2+ tyres very well (hardly any mud clearance)

Bottom Line:It wasn't till I went out to the Alps and tried a couple of *good* forks (particularly the RS Psylo XC) that I realised how poor the SX-E really is. Really only suitable for light trail riding.

If you've still got one of these sitting on the front of your FSR XC, you're not doing the bike justice!!

Purchased At:came on my 99 FSR
Strengths:It's better than no shock
Weaknesses:where should I start...OK this shock wont hold a line on a fast turn, it only moves if you put your weight on it, It has NO adjustments save for a preload that only makes it slightly stiffer. After I changed my tire size from 1.95 to 2.1 it started to rub even when hopping over logs, now I must say I am about 195 lbs with all my gear on and I should be using the heavy spring kit, but that will only stiffen up thre ride and may not help the problem. So I bought a new 2002 Manitou Mars comp-coil....

Bottom Line:These are just crappy forks. They don't perform well and break easily. They're very soft, barely adjustable, have poor travel (not smooth at all), and don't last. Plan on replacing parts often and sub-par performance. Save your money to buy a Marzocchi. Given the poor overall quality, even the cheap price of the SX E is far too expensive. Weaknesses:This for managed to break in every possible way. First the prelude adjuster knob(I'll give them a break on that one it was recalled and the second one that I revived worked much better). The next problem was that I took the dampening knob out to change the oil and in doing it broke. Leaving me with no rebound, I managed to wire it back together for a short-term fix so I could ride while I waited for a replacement, but in the meantime the rest of the dampening system completely went. At this point I had two options ride without oil, or fill her up and let the fork lock out at the top as the oil all drained into the lower portion of the fork. On its last ride I managed to blow out the seal on a small jump, and what then happened was that the dampening side which helps keep the fork from over extending managed to break off from the bottom. I had to spend the rest of my ride making a conscious effort to keep my front wheel on the ground for fear that the fork would extend to the point that the sliders would come out. As for it know, it sits in pieces on a shelf in my garage. I fear that its bad-luck (quality) will now manage to taint my shelf.

Strengths:Difficult one this, if you ride the bike solely on the road then maybe you won't discover its super soft characteristics, however it is very difficult to recomend it for anything else.
Weaknesses:Is it just me or does it get softer and softer over time? I thought that elastomers got harder over time. At the moment I am sporting a grazed face due to the fork bottoming out in a bombhole and then not returning thus changing the geometry of my bike and sending me over the handlebars. The fork is now so soft I can blow through the travel by just leaning on the front end.

Bottom Line:This fork has a pretty good stroke and may possibly be good for west coast light rider recrational riding. This fork is definitely not made for New England. It bottoms out a lot, doesn't soak up small bumps, gets sticky in mud due to no open bath, and doesn't move in the winter due to frozen elastomers. The preload knob never worked. It has all plastic internals which are weak. I don't know where manitou gets the idea that they can still make forks that use elastomers and don't have an open bath lube system. This fork is an absolute joke. I probably wouldn't put it back on my bike if they paid me to. Marzocchis are the best forks I have ever ridden. Never buy anything else.

This fork is definitely for light people though, and for intermmediate trails at the most. Soft fork, but I'm not wasting money on a spring kit, I want a fork with rebound control. Anybody got any suggestions for a $300 or so dollar fork? I like the 2001 Judy Race :)
If you're considering this fork and a RS Jett, get this fork. This fork vs an SXR or Judy, get one of those, unless it's a heavy Judy TT, which is pretty similar, except it weighs more.

Bottom Line:I'm a value conscious rider, I like getting a lot for my money. When I got the bike with the stock E on it, I figured it'd last a while. My 98 T2 is still plugging along, and it's seen as much, or more use than the E. Started out plusher than the T2 and stiffer than the SID (which was a friggin noodle), but a little soft. I ordered the firm kit right away. I test rode a buddy's SX-LE, and it was much firmer, Answer says they are the same except for the steerer (I kinda doubt that). I'm 150 lbs and I don't ride like a caveman, my buddies say I look "smooth", and I ride most everything. I've blown the SX-E out twice, given, both were on extended rocky downhills at high speed, and Answer was right there to help me get it rolling again without too much fuss, but the T2 takes that stuff without so much as a whimper. It got softer as it went, and now bottoms out uncontrollably, even though I've turned it into a lamp. I loved it at first, put a lot of miles on it, then the increasing softness started to affect my riding style, so now it's on an end table, and I put a MARS1 on, which, so far, so good, but I'll post again on it after a few hundred miles. The SX-E is a middle of the road fork at best.

Shimano SPD pedals not stock stuff
Manitou firm spring kit
Manitou SX firm bottom out kit
10wt shock oil
Bottom Line:After switching to the Panaracer 2.1 tires from the stock 1.9's, the bottom side of the crown hit the knobs on big jumps. I weight 205 and wish Manitou made a extra firm spring kit. After checking out the Answer/Manitou website I found the Customer Service phone number. A quick call later and a firm bottom out kit was on its way. A 2day delivery had the kit in my hands, I was expecting at least a week, minimum. The kit replaces the hour glass shaped rebound elastomers in each leg and adds a second stage bottom out elastomer. In addition to the install instructions came a service manual. All this done under warranty, as in no charge! The kit fixed the problem with out any noticable reduction of travel. 5 flamers for service!!

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Ample adjustment, ease of maintenance, looks great
Weaknesses:Disc brake mountings not universal, not cheap
Similar Products Used:Superfly Z3
Bike Setup:Giant Yukon
Bottom Line:After a years use and plenty hours of trail, this shock has never leaked or stopped soaking up big heats effortlessly. Application of grease using the grease gun means less maintenance and is really simple to do every few rides. This fork is easily adjustable on the move from almost locked out to real soft for heavy corrugations.

Strengths:Inexpensive, fairly light
Weaknesses:Way to flexy, grease blows out the side and down the fork leg, little adjustment, adjustment knob sticks, need I say more
Similar Products Used:Judy, SX R
Bike Setup:Specialized FSR XC (stock)
Bottom Line:Very dissappointed, road my new ride less than 3 rides and the fork could no longer be adjusted and grease was oozing all over the place.. Dealer indicates that the grease oozing is normal but will look into why the adjustment knob won't turn.. I am not sure if I should believe the dealer or not, may just scrap the fork and install a new Z1 or Z2.. I was not impressed or satisfied in the least bit by this product, I wish I could have upgraded the fork at the time of purchase... Fork may be suitable for an entry level rider, not recommended for fast, rocky descents.. Maybe I will give the fork to my younger brother...

Who ever heard of having to squirt grease into a fork every week? This is the stupidest thing I ever saw. Plus, Manitou doesn't even include the grease injector - you have to buy it separately. I have owned several different forks and never had to deal with anything as dumb as this. Hey Manitou wake up - lose the stupid grease port.

Another reviewer (Dale I think), claims these forks have adjustable damping. Dale is wrong, they don't. Bottom line, this is a 2 chili fork at best. I had this for nearly a year and it was very plush but stiff enough to be good to race. You get what you pay for and this is a very nice fork.
