Favorite Trail:Classified information
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Came with Bike
Strengths:Good if you're a light rider (I've been between 125 - 140 pounds over the last six years), long term reliability
Weaknesses:Bounces like a pogo stick when climbing on pavement, preload adjustment doesn't do a whole lot
Similar Products Used:Rock Shox Quadra 21, a couple of other shocks that I can't recall
Bike Setup:'98 Klein Pulse Comp
Bottom Line:The Spyder came with my Klein Pulse Comp. Considering I had a Rock Shox Quadra 21 on the previous bike, this was a quantum leap. I haven't had any cold weather problems. I've found the shock to be very reliable...not a lick of trouble in six years. I've ridden it under all sorts of conditions from 15 - 95 degrees and it's never faltered. Granted, I am very light (140 pounds at my heaviest) and its on the smallest frame Klein offered. The downside is that it does bounce like a pogo stick when climbing. I've mulled switching to a more modern fork, but the weight penalty scares me...so I'll stick with it.

Date Reviewed: December 13, 2001
Favorite Trail:Schoorl, NH
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $80.00
Purchased At:Second Hand
Strengths:Cheap, durable, great from rigid upgrade
Weaknesses:No adjustment, you can turn the knob all you like but nothing happens, bottoms out too quickly
Similar Products Used:RST 461, Manitou SX, Manitou Magnum, Manitou Spyder R
Bike Setup:B1 Torix, full LX with XTR rear derailleur, ritchey wheels&tires
Bottom Line:This fork is really good if you dont do great dropoffs, if you're not too heavy, and, well, if you just havent got the cash for a better one. I really enjoyed riding these, i've only recently upgraded to a SX (waaaayyy different league!). Despite of what others have to say, there's no difference in riding this fork with either 30 degrees celsius or minus 10.

Strengths:cheap
Weaknesses:flexible, no adjustments, blows through travel going over a beetle, stiffens slightly when cold.
Similar Products Used:Marzocchi Z-1 X-fly, Marz. Z-3 QR-20, SID 100, Judy XC.
Bottom Line:If you're looking to buy a fork, spend some money, and get a fork that's worth the small amount of work you're going to perform changing the fork. This fork is not worth the effort.

Favorite Trail:The Haute Route, Switzerland
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $99.00
Purchased At:Performance Bike Magazine
Strengths:Cheap, adjustable on-the-fly, low maintenance
Weaknesses:LOTS of brake dive, unresponsive, heavy, not much travel
Similar Products Used:Manitou Pro C, RockShox Jett, Marzocchi Z4 Air, RST 100
Bike Setup:Parkpre Alucomp (fat tube 7005 aluminum) with all Shimano XT components, 21"
Bottom Line:Okay so they're cheap. But that's about the only good thing I can say about them. I wiegh 210 lbs. and I like to leave the trail, so I guess I can dish out some abuse. This is probably why I blew out my Manitou Pro Cs, so I replaced them with Spyders because I was low on cash. I NO LONGER ENJOY RIDING MY BIKE. I hate them. I rode some Marzocchis and I will be purchasing them next week. To anybody intereted in these shocks: save up some money and buy something better. I wouldn't even recommend them to a beginner. They get peppers for value but that's about it!

Strengths:Uhh weight i guess, looks good.
Weaknesses:When the temperature is below 15 degrees celcius the fork doesn't move at all. I could put all my weight on it and it will only go down less than a half an inch. Even when it is warm it still only compresses just less than two inches.

Date Reviewed: January 17, 2001
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:came with bike
Strengths:Smooths out the pavement and gravels on the road.
Weaknesses:loses all travel whenever temp is below freezing. started to wear out after 1 year but i rode on it anyways for another year cos i was broke - bushings or something inside are cheaply designed. Felt like my headset was loose but it wasn't.
Similar Products Used:marzocchi bomber z.4 2001
Bike Setup:marin pine mountain
Bottom Line:i wouldn't put this fork on a Huffy - well, maybe i would if i didn't ride it very often. I wish the guy at the bike shop had recommended a better fork to trade for it when i bought the bike.
It's caused me to go over the handlebars. It's got too much flex. It's sluggish and doesn't rebound. Just kind of sits there. It doesn't have any travel at all in cold weather.

Favorite Trail:Any at Ledgeview
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:Caps Bikes
Strengths:Not too many for my riding. Very little bob while climbing as it is overly stiffly sprung.
Weaknesses:This fork is NOT smooth enough at all. The MCU and spring design is not adequate for bumpy trails. You may as well have a rigid fork mounted as the front wheel would probably stay in contact with the dirt the same amount of time... okay that's an exageration. I weigh 215 pounds and still can't bottom this thing out. I do not see this as a strength. The travel is too stiff. I suppose I could order softer MCU's but at $50 it is not worth it. I have a new fork on order as I type this. This fork is fine for smooth trails and the street.
Similar Products Used:RST 281R, have tried Manitou X-Verts which are better but have problems too
Bike Setup:Diamondback Response quite modified.
Bottom Line:For street and smooth trails I could recommend this fork. However, if you do a lot of serious trails then steer clear. You will not be happy with it. I have used mine for 3 months and already it is time to move on. For the same price I could have had an oil damped and non MCU fork with 100mm travel.

Bottom Line:This fork is not a bad one but i want to upgrade to disk brakes and i have to chage it, if you don't want disk brakes, and want a good fork this is a good idea because its now cheap thanks to the year (which wont make it work bad).

Strengths:The overall fork doesn't look to bad. It works great for cross-country riding. A nice feature is the adjustable travel that will almost turn it into a stiff fork.
Weaknesses:It LOUD, but that doesn't really matter that much.

Strengths:WoW!!! Nice response, great for jumping. Don't cost much, but they sure take a pounding (I'm 220lbs). Excellent on curbs, steps, roots, and anything else nasty.
Weaknesses:A bit noisy but who cares. A little more responsive than I'd like when using front brake.
Similar Products Used:Rock Shox Judy, Manitou Magnum
Bike Setup:Jamis Durango SX
Bottom Line:Excellent choice for the price and for a solid, responsive front shock. Pretty light, dependable if taken care of, and you can beat them up and they'll last. point is that for the price it's a really nice fork

Bike Setup:TREK 6000, XT AND XTR, NUKE PROOF WHEELS, KORE, TITEC, RACE FACE
Bottom Line:What a great shock! You get at least 2 1/2 inches of travel. If you are hitting things bigger than that you problem is not the shock, it is a whole different story.
Anyway, I am ridding a Judy 100 and while it is not in that catagory for plush or travel, but it is not made to be.
People who buy this shock thinking it is a SID or MARS are not really wise. This is at best a entry level or intermediate range fork. It does not claim to be more. In this catagory I think it is the best.
I do not like Mantiou products at all. Bad products, bad warranties, bad product help, bad service. All in all a bad company. All except this fork. I am truly amazed at this fork. I gave this away thinking it was going to really not last. I then got it back because that bike it was intended for got stolen. I then got it back and tried it out this past week. I am glad I did. Buy what you can, ride alot, and enjoy what God has given to you to see in his world.

The best thing you can do for the fork is to keep the sliding legs clean and lubed with Slick Honey. It is the slickest stuff I have found and the performance of the shock will be much better. Also, do not take the boots off. Boots are good and Slick Honey is good.If you want to get more serious about the performance of the shock, buy a set of speed springs. If you buy the springs you will have to grind them down to fit because no one makes an after market kit to fit this shock. Not Englund, and not HEVN Superstruts (although they will tell you that they just drop in they do not. I tried and they do not fit. You will have to compress the struts while screwing in the caps but then you will get about 1/2 of travel.) Speed Springs will dramatically alter the performance of the spyder for the better. The elastomers just mash down and pack up on steep down hill runs leaving you with a flexy rigid fork. The springs breath new life into the Spyder. The only other problem I have had are with the caps flying off. If they do, go back and get them and put a teeny weeny little dab of super glue on the top of the compression adjuster (where the cap was) and then press the cap back on. They will never come off again. So, after 3000 gruelling, extremely brutal miles in snow, rain and super dusty conditions my fork could use some new bushings but it is still pretty solid and still looks brand new. One other point is that I have seen boots on more expensive shocks rot off in our super dry hot climate but these boots are still like new. A good, reliable beginnner fork that needs a little common sense care.

Bottom Line:Well, i'd have to say that this is a great beginner fork. It's about the same as an '98 Indy XC and much cheeper. I know, the colour is a little boring, but it still works well for smaller trails. The only thing I have against it is that the damn thing doesn't adjust very easilly and that the damn thing has already busted on me twice. If you're a beginner, this is the fork for you! but if you think you're getting into those harder trails, pick up something that'll preform a little better.

Bottom Line:This is my first front suspension. I just recently replaced my kinesis aluminum fork for this and I'm satisfied. It definately soaks up the big hits but it has a sluggish rebound. I may have to go to stiffer springs. I also have to complain about the way it handles the small washboard style bumps. It doesn't respond very well to that either. But it sure is an improvement over no shock at all. My upper body is no longer fatigued from absorbing all that shock. Overall, a great buy for the price! $100.

Like other people commented, I found that my adjustment caps flew off as well....Going down Diversey Ave. towards the lake one flew off in the middle of the intersection. The right shock makes a serious hissing noise whenever the shock compresses. Gotta take it in to check it out..should still be under warranty. All in all, from the other bikes that I tested that had shocks, I am pleased with them (as long as I can get the damn hissing taken care of). Hopefully I can give an offroad review in a couple of months.

I bought my spyder as part of the bike I wanted. It has worked quite well even though it is entry-level. I am 210lbs and I have done my best to beat the snot out of the fork. Now I have money to spend (waste?) and so I might as well invest more into my bike and a bigger, better, badder fork, but I will definitely hold on to it ....just in case. The reason I got this fork was mainly from reading the reviews that were posted on this page, many people said good fork for the money etc. so I thought why not? This is my first suspension fork, so obviously I don't have many to compare it to (only my friends indy s) and from what I've seen this IS a very good fork for the money and well worth the $385 (Australian). From what I've ridden so far, the fork is very stiff, with no hint of movement around quick corners, also when you need the travel, its there, nice and plush, they are a bit heavy, but I am not one of those obsessive weight people, and I don't really notice the difference from my old rigid Cromoly fork. all in all, a really great fork for the beginner, and I'm sure they're very cheap at the moment due to next years' stock coming in, so, go out and buy it!!

I originaly had a rigid 98 Gary Fisher Marlin, but have since added the Spyder forks . . . what a difference. I dont care about the weight in comparison to a Spyder R (just think how much a couple of full water bottles weigh) 0.4 pounds really does not matter. I weigh a fair amount and have not bottomed out the forks yet, but at the same time, they are plush and supple enough to even out the smaller bumps at speed. If you want a cheap simple fork to get a start in the suspension scene, then you really cannot do better than a Spyder, you just pay for the name when you get a basic Rock Shox. I dont know about them in the cold yet, but i'm sure I'll find out this winter. Make sure you service them regularly and invest in some decent lube . . . I use Pace RC7 Progel.

The Spyders are a nice pair of shocks, despite the problems I have had. First, I don't know what these guys are talking about when they say they are heavy and have never bottomed out. I weigh 165, and I bottomed them out plenty of times. Especially in Moab. Within a month of owning my Gary Fisher Kai Tai (with stock Spyders), my elastomers wouldn't decompress. I took them in and had new elastomers put in (under warranty) and have not had a problem yet. They work great for cross-country racing and casual riding.

TAKE THE SOFT ELASTOMER KIT FROM THE SPYDER-R, USE ONE EACH OF THE BLUE ELASTOMERS, CUT YOUR STANDARD, (HOT PINK) ELASTOMERS IN HALF AND INSTALL. IT WORKS GREAT! NOT TO SOFT, GREAT REBOUND AND FULL TRAVEL. I MAY SWITCH TO THE SOFTER (140lb.) SPRINGS AS THE WEATHER GETS COLDER IF NECCESARY. SORY TO BUST THE BUBBLE ON SUPERSTRUTS BUT HEY JUST DIDN'T CUT IT. BESIDES THE SPYDER-R KIT COST ONLY $20. THE SUPERSTRUTS WERE $120.00. IF I HAD THE MONEY I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT BOTH LEVELS OF THE SUPERSTRUT BUT I NEED NEW SHIFTERS! These Forks are some of the worst I've ridden. My friend bought a Specializes A1 fs with these on.
1. They are the most boring colour i have ever seen , Wake up , its 98.
2. even though they are on a 15 bike , they are too stiff for me.
3. We managed to cure the stiffness problem by taking out one of the stacks. This only caused other problems.
4. Although softer , they weren't plush (even after bedding in and servicing) , and now the forks Ramp up on succesve hits. ie: no rebound.
Before we took one of the stacks out i (10 stone) couldn't bottom them off a 8ft drop off.
Before people start moaning, I know this is a budget fork , but for the price you can do better. Now , I've never been a great fan of Indys , but they are plusher , lighter , and look a lot better . For a bit more (or even the same - theyre always on offer) you can get Rst mozo pros, Or for the same price 461s , which are really plush , and just as laterally stiff.
1 dog shit cos you cant give 0 and another cos theyre laterally stiff - theyd be okay with a spring setup , but replacing the internals?Surely thats missing the point slightly.....

After test-riding the Manitou Spyder I decided it was in a different league from the Indy's. It's alot plusher, it has better travel, has less flex and just feels beefier. The only negative comment I have is about the weight. I was aware that the Spyder-R weighed in at just under 3.0lbs, so I figured the Spyder would be about the same but no, Manitou used a steel steerer tube in the Spyder so it weighs almost 3.4lbs. Needless to say I'm anxiously awaiting an upgrade kit.
