These came on my F700 XC ride. What they are doing on a bike like that is anyone's guess; they have terrible.
In the warm and dry - fine. Otherwise - forget it. They don't adjust to pad wear, they seize and drag at the first sniff of wet and mud, and even when (rarely) they actually work properly, the stopping power is unimpressive - my Hopes knock them into a cocked hat in all respects. They have been nothing by a P-in-the-A the whole time. I've adjusted them everywhich way, changed the oil, changed the pads, stripped, cleaned, lubed, you name it.
The bottom line? They are rubbish.

I honestly can't beleive that the plastic levers haven't snapped yet! I've had my bike for aboout 3 years, and although i've managed to break, snap, buckle, bend and pop almost everything else on the old girl, the brakes just won't give up!!! The braking is definately not as sharp as it was when they were new, but I'm pretty sure thats due to a harder compound pad that replaced the old ones. Anyway I'm gonne keep hammering these till they die, which could be a very long time....

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
These brakes work very well if set-up properly. With fresh pads I find the stopping power equivalent to all but the top-of-the-line Hayes and these things cost half of Hayes or Shimanos. The problem is the plastic levers can break and when they snap off you usually lose the inner plunger of the master cylinder. Here’s the gripe… Magura does not sell the internal plunger by itself; you have to buy the entire master cylinder. Sorry Magura, but this is just plain stupid. Change to aluminum levers, but you will have to bleed the brakes after doing so, since the master cylinder plunger is held in by the lever (strange design).
Replace pads at the beginning of each season and you will have solid power. I must admit these things were not nearly as powerful towards the end of useable brake pad life.
Magura USA does have solid customer service.
Hint: Only lightly tighten the brake levers so if you crash the lever spins on the handlebar instead of snapping the lever. I wish I would have known that hint before tackling my first downhill race and breaking the lever on my second practice run.

The brakes are supposed to adjust for pad wear, but mine failed to do so. After a small amount of pad wear the lever almost touched the bars, due to the malfunctioning self adjust feature. I accidentally pulled the brake lever while rim was removed, caliper popped out and siezed (could not be pressed back in)....brakes now in garbage can. Awaiting XT disc. Have been generally disappointed with the maintenance and wear of the brakes; been through numerous pads, had caliper leakages, had bent discs (not down to bashing) and poor aligment as a result. Quite difficult to get hold of the things in the UK too. These brakes are definitely entry level hydraulic discs and are not for the serious XC enthusiast; especially one who's just started racing! Good modulation, stopping power. The brakes don't lock like vee's but are smooth. The best analogy is to compare them to ABS brakes for cars. No lock-up, but stops you and gives you confidence.
Weaknesses:
The discs rust..baaad to the bone, like bare steel. Stainless steel shouldn,t rust! Espically on a mountain bike. I e-mailed Magura in June 01 and haven't heard from them yet. I spoke to the rep at Interbike 2001 and he said some of the Julie's discs were made in China and I could replace them with the upper model discs, (of course only if I get the same diameter discs)! But should't this be covered under warranty? Could be a combination of 95%+ humidity right now in Hawaii and lawn sprinklers adding moisture into the air. Even some of the chrome bolts on my bike are rusting. A little troublesome during break in. Had to bring it in several times to adjust the shims (washers) . Had some drag problems in the at this time. It would be fine at the shop, but the next day it would touch a little. Got tired of bringing it back (techs were roadies and in general not familiar with this new technology), so I finally removed the wheel and used 2 screw drivers to spread out the pads. It worked miracles! Never had problems since.

The brake system with 180mm front and 160mm rear discs came with the bike. I thought I was going to spend another $500 to replace my 1985 cromoly mountain bike, but spent under $900 for the whole package. The funny thing is this bike weighs the same (28 lbs.) with Judy 'C's and disc brakes as the bike it replaced. Awsome stopping power! Just only finger needed for front or rear brakes. I find I use the front brakes more than the backs espically on the road. I went from cantlever straight to hydro discs, didn't have to go through the evolution of brakes and have no regrets, (saved a lot of money too). Never go back to vee's of cants. Discs rule!
This brake would be ideal for the guy who wants something simple, reliable and doesn't want to fuss with it (unless he wants to). These brakes have a 5 year leakproof warranty and uses mineral oil which means it won't eat your paint if spilled.
It is not for the impractical Kamakazi down hill nut, who has money to burn. He probably would want to buy Hayes. It would probably stop him but this brake doesn't have the following like Hayes does.

Mine are currently in the shop where they are trying to get the front calipers unseized. I ride my bike in the mud at weekends, and commute (mixed road/bikepath/muddy path) in the week. Some combination of mud and salt is making them seize. Once unseized it only takes a few rides to get them seizing again.
I'd like to upgrade to Hope (which work fine round here), but I'll have to settle for getting some decent v-brakes and my wheels rebuilt (currently have disc-specific rims).
So, these discs may work fine if you don't see too much mud or road work, but if your useage pattern looks anything like mine, avoid them.

I love these brakes when they're working properly. BUT... ...I had an ongoing problem with the seals, Magura sent me a replacement with minimal hassles. Although they are not affected by the conditions of the rims, the discs themselves seem to randomly go in and out of true and start making a scraping noise similar to sharpening knives, which is very irritating and takes the patience of a saint to sort out as it requires straightening the disc out by hand. There is NO way to manually adjust the pads/calliper. The only option is to gat out your hex keys and a load of washers and ensure the actual unit is loacted mid way over the width of the disc.
Bottom line: I still love these brakes. But I don't exactly trust them to give me a trouble free year.

Dont let curios hands press the brake lever when the rotor is not in, the pads will seal shut and its a pain to pry them open. If you get soap on the rotor while wasing your bike the braking powere will come back after 15 minutes of riding. Also dont touch the rotor to much because the sweat and oil and dirt from your hand will contaminate the rotor. If you need to clean something off the rotor use rubbing alchohal and clean paper towel.
Just keep them clean and the will keep you happy. These german brakes rock!!

Bottom Line:
I have read many reviews and articles about ALL of the disc brakes that are out there and the one constant is the complaint about drag (aka - noise). The Julie disc brakes are quiet and reliable when there is a good pad to a cool rotor. If you damage the rotor or pads you will know immediately by the howls. Keep riding a damaged brake and you will have junk. If you are constantly heating up your 6" rotor, get an 8" to sled down those mountains. That goes for any disc brake. I suggest learning a little about the brake and you should be able to keep it running fine in the back country (or your backyard) without calling your rep or LBS. I can field-strip, clean and inspect my pads and rotors in about 5 minutes with a rag and a pair of needle nose pliers. Anything other than brake pad will cause problems when you squash it against the rotor. Get used to the new maintenance, if you want to count on trouble-free, quiet braking under heavy gravity situations (the times you NEED to brake). I'll write another "whiney" review if this brake self-destructs like some say it may, but in the meantime I dig it! It stops my 200 pound body (and bike) wherever I want and modulates great. I subtracted one for not having a reach adjustment on the levers.

Brakes came installed new Cannondale Jeckyll 700Z. Decent stopping power and modulation WHEN WORKING
Weaknesses:
Bike shop graciuosly upgraded brake levers to aluminum at time of bike purchase. I rode with the plastic ones for a week until new ones came in, and they felt very flimsy and cheap. The hydraulic lines were bled after about three rides due to a complete loss of braking power in the front, and sluggishness in the back - this service was performed by both Cannondale and Magura techs at a bike festival, and the brakes performed well for about 10 hrs of riding, and then, they were sluggish and the rear howled when brakes were applied. Brought the bike back to shop, and the brakes were serviced, worked for about 2 more hrs of riding. Sluggish again, lots of drag in front and rear and crunching noises when the brakes were applied. Met a sales rep from Cannondale on a local trail, and he adjusted them for me, applied Lock Tite to keep the disks from rotating (rear), and checked the drag in the fron for me. Again, they worked fine for about 2 hrs, rear was ok, but made funny noises when the brakes were applied, but the front got soft again. Met the same Rep at another festival, he and a local shop mechanic tried to bleed the brakes, and after 2 attempts, the cable blew at the hydraulic fluid resevoir. Once again, back to the shop of original purchase, and that's where I'm at now.

To be honest, nothing that I used in the past has worked this poorly to be considered as similar. Had great success with Shimano XTR V-Brakes and first Generation Coda Competion disc brakes on my previous bike.

Bottom Line:
Generally speaking, I am a cross country rider, and although I ride my bikes hard, I do not abuse them. These brakes are probably well suited for a light-recreational rider/bike (although disc brakes are probably excessive for that type of riding...). When the brakes work, they have decent stopping power and modulation, however, my experiences to date have been less than satisfactory. I will say that I have received excellent customer service from my local bike shop, Cannondale (the bike manufacturer) and the service rep from Magura. As far as value and overall satisfaction ratings go, I regret that I have to give 1 chili as my lowest rating.

The low price! Self-adjusting pads. Simple, effective low pressure system - it uses Magura rim brake tubing. Love that one bolt reservoir cap!
Weaknesses:
Lack of lever blade adjustment. That's it! Big deal - I can live with it for the $$.
This is my favorite Magura XC disc brake and I've tried them all for long tests. This is a low pressure brake that uses the inexpensive rim brake tubing but the braking power is upped by use of a front 180mm rotor.
I test all my brakes on a dirt road 43mph downhill. This one rocks! It's the equal of any Magura disc I've used. One finger all the way and wowzers it makes my eyes bulge!
It was zero squeal out of the box and powerful after a short break-in period. It's drag free too and anyone with drag should get the shimming set up properly. If the shimming is correct and you look closely you can see daylight between pad and rotor on both sides. How can this brake drag when set up correctly?
The single bolt reservoir cap makes for easy bleeding. I would like a lever blade reach adjuster screw so I've deducted one steaming chilidog for this problem. This *is* a budget brake so I guess costs had to be cut somewhere.
Well done Magura.

At this price point, get a Hayes HMX-1 instead. That's what I did, and the quality difference between it and the Julie is astounding! I don't know if other Maguras higher up the line are good brakes (they're not popular around here, so I haven't had a chance to try), but I don't think that their low end brakes aren't worth it. Bottom Line:
I purchased this brake as I thought it would be a good alternative to a mechanical disk at around the same price. At first, it seemed like it was. The install went fairly well, although neither I nor my LBS could get rid of the drag, even after bleeding it two times, and braking it in as per the manual--which, by-the-way--did not come with the brake. Magura claims that the pads will auto adjust, but they always reset themselves to the exact same location, so I'm unsure as to what that means. Tricks used for setting up Hayes hydros simply do not work here. Oh well, I can live with that.
What I can't live with though is the fact that after one little crash (not very hard at all--the bike just basically fell over), the plastic part of the lever (not the blade) broke almost clean in half! My LBS does not think that Magura will warranty the lever, and even if they would, they do not believe that Magura can supply just a lever! Therefore, they think that my only way out is to buy a whole new brake!!! This is simply unacceptable.
Therefore, if you think you want a disc brake, but feel that you ride in situations that might prompt you to do an involuntary dismount, you should avoid this brake. The lever is simply too delicate to survive any real offroad riding. At this price point, get a Hayes HMX, it will probably fair better.
If Magura does honour a warranty, I will happily up this review by one point, but otherwise I'd say save your pennies for a real Hayes hydraulic, they work better in the real world.
