Favorite Trail:Dark mountain
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $8.00
Purchased At:cook's
Strengths:looks good, dampens chain slap sound, stays in place, pretty much everything it suppose to do
Weaknesses:none so far
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:08 hardrock sport
Bottom Line:Pretty much just get the velcro and not the stick on lizard skin. This think fits tight and really dampens the noise. It definently a good option in order to keep your bike looking new.

Strengths:I dunno, it won't stick on the bike so I can't test it
Weaknesses:It won't stick on the bike at all, it doesn't like to bend
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:mountain bike
Bottom Line:when trying to stick this to my bike I realised that it would have trouble staying round the tube long enough for the adhesive to work, but fear not, I thought. I can tie it with cable ties, leave it for a few days and that would be that. So, this is what I did. and lo, and behold! IT DIDN'T WORK! the adhesive just isn't strong enough to hold this badly designed product curved round the tube.

Bottom Line:Ok, so after being severely unsatisfied with this product, I stumbled across Zach's post below regarding Gebali's product. After doing some research on their site and getting some excellent feedback from their customer service, I ordered their product, and what a difference! For only a dollar or two more, the difference is night and day. As Zach stated, they seem to be pretty new, but I wouldn't be surprised if they make it big. The kevlar top makes a world of difference, I haven't used it for long, but it's easy to tell it will way outlast the alternative. Hopefully soon mtbr.com will add them to the list so I add this review there.

Date Reviewed: December 4, 2005
Favorite Trail:DRT
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $8.00
Strengths:It does a great job of silencing chain slap. The glue worked fine for me, but my frame was all chewed up thru the paint and down to the aluminum. The carbon fiber strands started to fray from the edges of the skin. I put some super glue on the ends of the lizard skin and it holds together fine now. The glue was not to hold the lizard skin to the bike, it was to hold the skin together as it started to de-laminate. I glued it when I installed it and have had no problems all year.
Weaknesses:tried to self-separate but is easily glued back together
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:Trek 8000LT all XT / hayes disc / Bomber Z1 MCR
Bottom Line:Mine installed fine, and it does a great job of preventing the chain from hitting the frame while jumping logs! It holds up great, it shows no sign of the chain eating thru it.

Price Paid: $10.00
Strengths:cheap
tough
black
Weaknesses:moves around a bit
eats dirt
Bike Setup:specialized rockhopper with deore front and rear
Bottom Line:BUY THE VELCRO.

i decided to buy the velcro sleeve after hearing horror stories about the sticky ones. it's removable, it's padded, and soaks up damage really well.

it also soaks up dirt and mud so if you really go through some messy stuff you're gonna have to take it off and rinse it. no big deal, it's still better than getting something to stick to your bike's clear coat.

it eliminates chatter, and prevents the chain stay and chain from being damaged by bad bumps. it's super fat, so it fits well around my stay, but it's a pain to get it to stay in one place, instead it rotates when the chain hits it, so just give up about getting the 'lizard skins' logo to point out, odds are it'll point down, or be eating chain in no time.

but this is a great product since it comes off and on, is washable, and does the job.

Strengths:None. I have tried BOTH the neoprene and carbon fiber guards. Neither of these worked. If you care about your frame, get a chain-away from GEBALI.COM, they actually work and look good!
Weaknesses:As everyone knows by now... the carbon guard simply falls right off the bike with use (like mine did). As for the neoprene, it twists, gets covered in oil, AND THE CHAIN GOES THROUGH IT to chip the paint off the frame anyway! The neoprene was not thick enough, oil and sun seem to break it down and then it falls apart. It also twists during the ride and never seems to stay in the same place. So it ended up looking poorly as well!
Similar Products Used:GEBALI chain-away, rubber, tape
Bike Setup:Specialized Stump Jumper FSR, Specialized Stump Jumper Team hardtail
Bottom Line:Go to GEBALI.COM and have a look at their chain-away. After instense frustration and wasting money on Lizard Skins, it does a great job. They are hand made (probably by people who actually ride), and look much nicer than all the alternatives(especially the tape and rubber). They must be just starting out, but they really seem to care about their customers and gear. Don't waste your money on Lizard Skins! For the cost they just aren't close to worth it. I have a holy Lizard Skin, dinged chainstay, and worthless carbon non-sticker to prove it!

Weaknesses:Nope, won't stick. Won't stick at all. Not even after wrapping tape around it tightly and letting the adhesive stick for a couple weeks.
Similar Products Used:Neoprene headset guard works pretty good.
Bike Setup:'04 Marin Pine Mountain. Steel frame that needs more protection than this guard can offer.

Strengths:Nice look, quiets things down vs. typical sticker
Weaknesses:Adhesive supplied is a joke!
Similar Products Used:Stock chainstay stickers
Bike Setup:DBR V-Link 3.2, SRAM ESP 9.0 8-speed
Bottom Line:I bought before I found these reviews! Advice below is correct: wipe off existing adhesive, get thin, quality double-stick tape, clean up chainstay and new Lizard Skins guard, then use the tape. I happened to have good tape in the garage, so this didn't take me an extra trip. So...I'll only ding it a little on value. The product itself works and the tape actually adds some sound damping (I suspect). So...if you like the look and are prepared to use good tape, this thing's fine and seems durable. I wouldn't pay the MSRP of $10+, however...

Bottom Line:1. I ride a Ti so a chainstay guard is not necesarily needed, more an asthetic touch.

2. Glue on this product SUCKS! It doesn't stick and I tried MANY methods... This product is a complete waste of money effort etc. I am, thinking of trying the double stick tape method but IMO why should I re-apply adhesive to a product that is supposed to have it already?

Strengths:easy way to find thin carbon fiber
Weaknesses:won't stick to your bike without some double sided adhesive
Similar Products Used:lizard skins neoprene (bad), homemade aluminum diamond plate guard, clear rubber hose guard
Bike Setup:2004 Giant VT 1
Bottom Line:The bottom line is, if you need a carbon fiber protector, buy this pack, go to Home Depot and get some thin double sided adhesive. Rub the adhesive on the back of the carbon fiber off with your finger (after your failed attempts to make it stick to your bike). Apply your double sided 3M tape and you're good to go. Unless you have a flat chainstay, this thing won't stick without some mods...

What's worse, carbon that doesn't stick or neoprene that shreds in 10 rides? For my other bikes where I don't care about weight...make your own protector out of something that is fun and looks cool.

3M adhesive is s**t. God knows why they used that type. The thing is 3M make adhesive that is far more suitable (a thicker gummier glue that is really strong straight away that I use for my job) so why didnt they use it on the lizard skins?
Tried one patch to no avail. Junked the rest.
Also I think they are a little too thick. That is why they are not forming around the tubes properly.

Put the carbon patch on an ironing board, put a layer of cotton fabric over the patch and iron away. Just a few seconds with a hot iron should be good, too hot and the adhesive can start coming away from the carbon fibre. Now stick it on. Don't forget to wipe the frame with alcohol first!

Bottom Line:The LS Carbon Fiber protector is absolute garbage. This is the second one Ive tried and the second one Ive had peel up on me imediately after I applied it. And yes, I cleaned it with alcohol and used the blow drier to heat up the material as I was sticking it down. DOESNT WORK!!! Does lizard skins not test their products before releasing it. I want to know how much they paid Mtn. Bike Action mag to give it a good review because thats where I read about it and got the impression it was worth a crap. Hopefully i can get my money back. Bottom Line:Saw a good review in one of the mags, thought I'd give it a try (bike as shipped had some weak plast-ick shiny thing that was screaming to be peeled off before it snagged and ripped off). Anyway - followed tip to soften up with a blow drier so that it would contour better. Didn't stick worth crap - despite significant cleaning of application area with supplied alcohol pad and prior overall frame cleaning. Bite, bite, bite. I've got it cheap-o rigged with electric tape (black helps disguise) until I can get the old standard to replace it. I'm giving one flame because the package also included some cool carbon fiber squares, which I'm using for cable-rub spots.. they stick fine for some reason.

Bottom Line:This product definitely looks cool and does its job if it sticks, the operative word be if. Mine started peeling up as did many others, I did find however that if you have a LS neoprene chainstay protector you can put that on over the carbon fiber one for a few days and it seems to be sticking again. I'll have to get back on whether or not this made it stick for good. So for now, only 3 flaming things since I had to work extra hard to make it work, but it is really cool.

When I installed it I used the alcohol wipe as instructed. My chainstay is like new and very clean as I had a wrap around guard on it since it was new. No matter what I did, the edges kept unsticking. I even wrapped zip ties all over it and let it sit overnight and once I took them off the edge started peeling back up. Strengths:They look good, they're washable, inexpensive, come in a variety of colors, of negligable weight, and show hardly any wear and tear after over two years of off-road riding with them.
Weaknesses:They're so inexpensive and indespensible that manufacturers should include them with new bikes instead of putting some crappy plastic sticker on the chainstay.
Similar Products Used:Crappy thick plastic stickers which come with each bike.
Bike Setup:I have two, but my main ride now is a 2002 Trek 8000, stock except for Shimano 959 pedals thus far, plus cyclocomputer, bar-ends and such.
Bottom Line:Some people think it's real cool to use an old tire tube to protect the chainstay, and maybe back before Lizard Skins that was the thing to do, but now I can't imagine why anyone would use anything but this product or something similar unless they wanted to show off what a "real biker" they are. These are lighter and do a much better job of protecting the chainstay.

They were a little hard to put on at first (plural because I use them on three different bikes) but that's no big deal since I've only ever taken them off once to wash them.

Lizard Skins definitely beats similar products by Speedstuff and such on durability and protective properties alone, and Lizard Skins has improved their designs for 2002.

The chainstay guards sold me on the fork boots, which sold me on the headset protector, and now I'm thinking about ordering the derailer covers because my derailers get caked with dust and/or mud on every ride.

They're so light that I'm not worried about whatever amount of weight they're adding to my bike.

Happy Trails!

Strengths:Does what it is intended to do
Weaknesses:Does not fit very well on my Klein, better on less oversized tubes
Bike Setup:Klein with Mavic wheels
Bottom Line:I use a good thick plastic/rubber band instead of Lizard skins on the Klein, the fit isn't good enough

Date Reviewed: November 3, 2000
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $7.00
Purchased At:Cyclopath
Strengths:Light, comes in some cool colors (now- three years ago all they had were black) and three sizes, does exactly what it's supposed to, very durable. Put it on and forget about it.
Weaknesses:Depending on the size of the 'Skin and the chainstay/swingarm diameter, can be a little testy to put on full suspension bikes. Sucks up dust like nobody's business.
Similar Products Used:Nothing aftermarket, just the OEM cellophane sticker that usually comes on bikes.
Bike Setup:'98 FSR with XT/XTR, White Bros. DC118; Stumpjumper with LX mix and White Bros. SC90.
Bottom Line:I bought another one because I liked how well my first one worked. Threw the old black one on the Stumpjumper and put a pretty red one on my FSR to contrast with the blue paint and match the red highlights. I was rather surprised at how much dust came off the old one when I took it off, but that's minor. I bought the thing to keep my stay from getting beat all to hell. It's done the job perfectly for three years and will continue its service on another bike for years to come, it seems. The new one might get a little dirty and lose the sexy factor it has right now, but I can wash it, right? I can't see getting any oil on it, either, because I use White Lightning on my chain. Five stars for what it does and five for the innovation that the company keeps putting into it such as offering different colors and sizes.

Strengths:Looks good. Does its job.
Weaknesses:Gets dirty easily.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Y2K Trek 6000.
Bottom Line:I had been riding my bike and listening to the chain slap the chainstay when I would go over bumps. So I got this and it has made my ride much more quiet. My bike is Titanium color with red decals, and I got the red lizard skins protector. It matches the bike nicely and looks good. It does get dirty, but isn't that what it's all about? I don't know why everybody else is complaining about this product. If you don't like it getting dirty, throw it in the damn washing machine. It took me 30 seconds to get it on my bike and it doesn't slide around or anything. I had to stretch it to get it on, but it's elastic! It's supposed to be stretched! I'd say this is a good investment to protect your paintjob and not scare off the wildlife when you're coming down a trail!

Date Reviewed: September 5, 2000
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Prevents chain clank, protects stays like it's supposed to.
Newer version is much tougher.
You can take it off to dry.
Weaknesses:None really. Any color other than black looks like crap after a month, so buy black. A little pricey
Similar Products Used:old tubes, various plastic gizmos
Bike Setup:STP 200 w/GripShift
Bottom Line:The best thing about this over a home-brew stay protector is that it can easily be removed to dry after washing the bike. Do this and it won't trap water next to a steel chain stay like a zip-tied tube or cotton bar tape will.

Other stuff: yes, it stops chain clank and associated paint chipping. It's not too hard to get on most bikes, and it breaks in to fit your bike's stay after a few months. The new version is a lot tougher; it has a sort of ribbed cloth outer layer. My old ones did get some chain hit holes (so I turned them around when the holes got bad), none so far on the new one.

Like anything else that's good and goes on a mtb, it does its job and is slightly pricey. You can live without this item, but it makes life a little nicer.

Weaknesses:a little awkward to fit, expensive for what it is. Gets soggy in the wet.

Bike Setup:Orange Evo02, manitou, hope discs
Bottom Line:a lot of money for velcro and neoprene but it does stop the chain rattling and chipping. Took a bit of effort to fit it on the fat profiled stays on my bike but I've just left it on and wiped it down with a lubed rag to keep it cleanish. Any colour other than black just wouldn't make sense. There are now a few cheaper copies that will probably do the job just as well.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Does what its supposed, nothing more, nothing less.
Weaknesses:A little cheaply made, but again, does the trick
Similar Products Used:Hockey tape, old bike tubes
Bike Setup:1999 KHS Crest, STX-RC, Powertools, stock except lizards.
Bottom Line:People complain about how expensive lizards are. SURE, but when you spend $600 bucks, or even $250 for that matter, do you really want your paint all gouged and chipped. NO!
So get a lizard skin, and don't complain. Even if you replace it every few years, its better than haveing to listen to the chainslap and getting the stares of a beat up bike.
As for the people who say a tube works better with zip ties, I'd beg to differ. If you crack your chain on that too hard, you tear it, and it also tends to dis-color the paint beneath because it's not breathable
So, I swear by these lizards, and give them 5 flaming turds all around!

Strengths:Easy to get on and off if your chainstay/swingarm isn't too big (they do sell a jumbo size for oversize/swingarms).
Weaknesses:the stitching falls apart fast. Liz skins never responds to my concerns
Similar Products Used:clear tuffy protector -- works much better than these.
A tube and two zip-ties work just as well (don't look as cool, but save you $$).
Bottom Line:I bought a lot of Lizard skins products with a new bike, hoping to protect parts. I spent some money doing this, and most of it wears out so fast that it isn't worth it.

Get Tuffy clear protector or just use a tube and two zip-ties. Much better/cheaper.
