Date Reviewed: October 25, 2008
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:The seals in my Fox float RC definietly last longer when I use it. the one time I went without a boot, seals lasted about a year, with the boot, they last 2-4 years.
Weaknesses:I think a bellows style boot would look cooler.
Bottom Line:Use a boot and you need less maintenance on your shock.

Strengths:Keeps shock clean
Weaknesses:Is not waterproof and actaully retains water
Similar Products Used:na
Bike Setup:Trey Y-22 stock
Bottom Line:This has kept my Fox Alps 4 shock running for 9 years now, so I can only say good things about it, even though admittedly water is not kept away from the shock. The tip about spraying it with waterproof spray is a good one I will have to try.

3 chilis as Lizard skins are not cheap and this does not actually keep water out.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $11.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Compared to the shock-jacket I have been using from gebali.com… I no longer see any strength in the lizard skins booty.
Weaknesses:The lizard skins booty doesn’t keep out water, retains water that does get in, doesn’t work for muddy rides, sits RIGHT on the SHOCK, and just doesn’t do all that much for the price… not to mention, for the money it’s a pretty cheap design. Use a SHOCK-JACKET from gebali.com, they work soo much better! You will see what I mean if you check out their site!
Similar Products Used:Shock-Jacket from GEBALI
Bike Setup:Stump Jumper FSR, Fox Rear Air shock, Sid SL, XTR
Bottom Line:I ride and have raced, and have spent a lot of time trying to protect that little rear shock! I used to have to have to rebuild it and clean it all the time! I happened onto a site called gebali.com and bought one of their shock-jackets… it works so well (so much better then the lizard skins booty). They are made out of waterproof breathable materials (like gore-tex), extremely light-weight, HAND MADE, and look really good! I am always a little hesitant to take a chance on something new that I haven’t seen before (especially online!)… so when I find something like this, from a really neat little company, I want to share it with everyone! My advice is DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A LIZARD SKINS, get a shock-jacket from GEBALI… they are well designed, high quality, and work really well!

Purchased At:Spirt and Cycle
Strengths:keeps most of the dirt and grime off of the shock. The tip about spraying it with silicone waterproofing stuff is great (you can get this stuff by itself in the hunting and outdoors sections of many stores).
Weaknesses:doesn't wrap as tight around the shaft of the shock letting some dust and stuff to get up there. Have to be a little careful not to scratch the shaft of air shocks when putting it on.
Bike Setup:03 enduro
Bottom Line:My shock stays clean on the trail!

does what is advertised
Weaknesses:NonE if you follow what i tell you guys to do!
Similar Products Used:none, well a plastic bag!
Bike Setup:norco atomik 03 stock pretty much
Bottom Line:ok what you do is go to foot locker or athletes world what ever. they sell a product that comes in a 2 pack and it has a shoe shampoo and a water repelent can. Take your cover make sure it is clean, infact just buy a brand new one so it is definitely clean. Take it and spray both sides of the cover. Make sure it is sprayed evenly. let it dry for atleast 2 hours and dont tocuh it. then put it back on ur bike and its water proof. just make sure it is dry first cuz there are a lot of chemiclas in those sprays!!

anyone with a bike should own this if it is a full suspension. it is a sensible upgrade and a cool one too!

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $7.00
Purchased At:evanscycles
Strengths:easy to fit, long lasting
Weaknesses:if it comes off it gets cought in coil. can cause problems but it means you dont lose it. no problems with my air shock but need to zip tie it. if you think dirt is in you have to take off the guard and check
Bike Setup:scott G-Zero Strike Carbon with hope minis and mavic rims
Bottom Line:get a candle or some skate wax and rub it all over each side dont use sticky stuff because if it gets into your shock your skrewed. if you think youl lose it put a bit of fishing line through it and tie it to your frame. could save you hundreds of dollars. buy it if you are an xc rider but not if you are a downhiller the length may not be able to cover a longer shock.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $19.00
Purchased At:Bike Planet
Strengths:Cheap, Easy on and off, Keeps dirt and mud out of my Fox,
Weaknesses:Measure and cut may be a pain for some people, Designed like a cylinder when it should be designed like a cone for air shocks.
Similar Products Used:NONE
Bike Setup:02 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR XC
Bottom Line:When riding in mud and dirt a little cheap insurance on a part that costs as much as rear shocks do is a good thing. I've already had to pay Fox once for a rebuild on my float due to an unrelated problem. At one hundred a rebuild I felt twenty bucks of cheap insurance was well worth it. The sleeve will absorb water so when riding in mud it's best to take it off and let it dry when you get home before you put it back on. Just brush the dried dirt off and your good to go. I still feel that lizard skins should redesign this product one for coil built like a cylinder and one for air built like a cone so it fits an air shock better. Oh well I'll just use it as is PEACE!

Weaknesses:not waterproof

Bike Setup:'03 Specialized Rockhopper FSR Comp, Fox Float R shock, still stock for now.
Bottom Line:With all the horror stories about dirt getting into the Fox Float shocks, I decided to buy a little cheap insurance to keep it clean, so I got the 6.5" shock boot. I cut a 2" section to cover the bottom of the shock and secured it on the little flange above the seal on the Float R with a zip tie (don't really trust velcro, and zips are cheap) so I can still adjust rebound/air pressure and the vitals are protected. The LBS was out of LS headset covers, so I cut another section from the shock boot that stretched around the lower headset seal too, and so far it has stayed there. Bonus: there's enough material left to do the whole thing again. Definitely try this product if you have an air shock. Even if it doesn't last for years, it's only 10 bucks.

Favorite Trail:Can't remember it's name
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $9.00
Purchased At:Gregg's Cycles - Greenlake
Strengths:Great value, effective, greatly extends shock life, easy to clean
Weaknesses:Not water repellant.
Similar Products Used:What similar products?
Bike Setup:2000 Specialized FSR XC, stock, except saddle.
Bottom Line:While some Lizard Skins products are really just gimmicks (Bar end cover? Chainstay cover? Puleeese!) Their rear shock boot really does the trick. By keeping dirt out of the rear shock (especially for those of us w/air shocks), it keeps the shock performing well and extends it's life greatly. For about $10, it's terrific value (a new rear shock will cost you at least $200, last I checked). The only improvement I'd like to see them make is the material. Neopryne (sp) isn't water repellant (it actually seems absorbant) prefer material that keeps the shock dry and clean, not just clean. Apart from that, this product is a great investment.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $8.00
Purchased At:SuperGo
Strengths:Light, simple, does the job
Weaknesses:If it had a plastic coating on the outside to keep the water from soaking into the material, that'd be great. No big deal!
Similar Products Used:Plastic Wrap (Plastic Crap... don't try it.)
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel 90 Disc. Stock Fox Float rear air shock.
Bottom Line:This does the job. When I bought my bike it had a dent in the down tube. While Trek sent me a new frame I rode around on the bike without a shock boot. Within 1 week the fox air shock developed a gnarly squeak and growl, probably from some fine dust on the shock. When I finally got my replacement bike the first thing I bought for it was a Lizard Skin shock boot. I've had it about 3 months now and my shock is like new. Here's a tip!!! When you cut off the excess material to fit your shock, don't throw it away. Use it to cover the bottom of your headset just above the crown. In my case it's the perfect size to keep dirt from getting in the bottom bearings that the front wheel throws up.

Weaknesses:Neoprene isn't thick and isn't exactly super-durable.

Bottom Line:Worth the $10 or $12 to keep mud/water off your shock. Should increase interval between shock overhauls.

Some say they increase stiction, but not for me.

Lizard Skin Headset seals are fine too.
However, the fork boots are nearly worthless...save your money.

Strengths:Works Great
Weaknesses:Had to cut holes and length.
Bottom Line:If you have an air shock this product is an absolute must have, I was a little disaponted when I asked my sales man “If you were buying this bike, what would you put on it?” if this isn’t an invitaion to make some money of me I don’t know what is… but he didn’t say a Lizard skin.. it was when I got home and a frined took a look at my new bike.. that was the first thing he said to get… and man was he right.. first ride out was a wet and muddy one, the shock was coved in mud with the first puddle I went through…. By the end of the ride it was just one wet muddy sack! But the shaft was clean!
You may get away with not having this on an oil shock but an air shock? Oil shocks use steel crome shafts hard to scratch but a fat aluminum shaft?….Could save a lot of time in the repair shop

Weaknesses:doesnt fit too well on my RS SID Dual air shock
Similar Products Used:plastic bags tubes the usual crap
Bike Setup:Giant Xtc Ds2, stock with Hope brakes
Bottom Line:would be good of Lizard skinz to make one that fits the dual air shocks since duial air is getting more popular.

However a lot less to pay than purchasing out a shock thats worn out way too early due to undue wear

4 burning turds coz had to cut holes for the air valves but still a decent price

4 over all coz it keeps the crud off my shock

Bottom Line:To those of you who use innertubes, or worse, plastic-bags.
Get rid of 'em, they'll do a good job keeping dirt/water out, but they also tend to keep trap moisture (condensation), hence corroding your valuable rear-shock!
The material of the lizard skins allows the rear-shock
to dry completely while keep'n out sand which is the most damaging to your rear-shock.

Strengths:This is the only Liz skin product that works pretty good.
Weaknesses:The other lizskins don't work worth crap: brake levers, swingarm/chainstay protector, etc.
Similar Products Used:MTB tube (I took the shock off and slid a tube around the shaft--works well enough but is hard to get on/off.)
Bottom Line:I will say this works. It isn't as cheap as a tube or sealing a plastic bag around the shock (both of which are more water proof than the shock boot). But this looks better and is easier to handle.

It doesn't cost so much that you have to think about it. If you are worried about the shock and don't want to spend time getting a cheesy protection, get this. OTherwise, save $$ and put a bag/tube around it and protect it a little better against water.
