Dust, sand and mud will get between boots and stanchions in the end and because permanent contact with stanchions there will be fine scratches on your precious stanchions.
The boots will remove all lubrication from stanchions. | | Bottom Line: | Do not use these boots! Do not use ANY boots! If there would be a need for boots, Manitou and others would have put them in place.
These boots will scratch your stanchions with sand trapped inside. The sand and dirt are getting inside on the arch opening, no matter how well you wrap boots, even when you ride on roads!
The precious lubrication on stanchions will be removed after first hour of riding! The stanchions should be lubrified after every ride and with boots it's like you never lube.
If you are afraid of dirt getting inside you should think about special seals like Enduro Fork Seals. Manitou Evil Genius seals have double sealing rings and with proper service periods you should not worry about dirt getting inside.
Don't be afraid of basic service (cleaning only!) for your fork by manufacturer specifications, it's easy, believe me!
Enduro Fork Seals have excellent picture tutorials.

They don't slip at all and stay in place. The suspension is not affected in any way.
Do not cut them! Just velcro the extra around crown. Easy installation in 2 minutes! Looks good.
Remember to remove them when cleaning from heavy dirt, there is a place between the arch and stanchions where excesive dirt may get inside.
I think is a great product that prolongs the fork life and really needed for expensive forks.

If you want them to keep the water, mud and grit out you can try to seal them externally with some silicon grease (or petroleum jelly). This little scuba trick works fine to me.

The key to the lizards is to leave them on the long side. If they are shorter than the exposed slider, they will pull away from the seat area when the fork springs back and let in dirt and muck. As well, the neoprene seems to shrink slightly over time. For my Sid-XC's, this meant cutting off only about 1/8". Next time around I doubt I'll cut anything off. The newer skins look even nicer than my old ones, with a larger overlap on the lower fork leg.
The upside to the skins vis-a-vis real boots, is that one can take them off completely and really clean both the inside of the skin and the fork. I take them off and clean them everytime I wash the bike (as well as clean and lube the sliders and fork seals), and so far my forks are as pristine as the day I bought them, even after a year of abuse. They seem to hold water.
The OEM type rubber boots, funky looking as they are, work best. My Manitou Mars 1 came without the rubber boots, but a call to Manitou and they were on their way, free. They should have shipped the fork with them in the first place, like many of their forks do.
The Lizard Skins are useful for headset and rear shock, but save your money on the fork boots, as they are very much worthless.

These things are VERY hard to put on right. They don't really even fit my RST fork (like Lizard Skins claim they should). I could'nt even get them to completely cover my fork seals, and so everything got in there - dirt,water..you name it. I finally decided to remove them and save myself some hassle. About the same amount of garbage gets in the seals w/o them on. They are WAY too expensive for what little good they do. I can't speak for those who have other brands of forks, but if you own an RST 260, walk away from Lizard Skins and don't look back !! If they could make boot that is a little less one size fits all, and come up with something a little suited for particular makes of forks, they might have a better product to offer. My bike came with an RST381 which gradually became stiff in the first few
months of riding(my trails are wet, no dust). I was a newbie then so I
didn't understand until my roomie felt like fooling around with my fork and
took it apart finding it full of water. The standard boots don't do
much of anything. Ergo, my LizardSkins purchase. They worked great for me.
Then, I went to dusty Illinois and rode around, not very much in fact, and
the fork started to freeze up. It didn't look like there was an open-
ing in the velcro when I broke down my fork, so I didn't know how the dust
had gotten inside. I cleaned everything including the Skins. From what I
could tell it appears that the Skins became permeated with dust, and that
dust traveled through them into the fork! I wrote to Aardvark and they said
that it was impossible. It would be nice to hear some regular dusty rider's
Skins experience. I rarely ride in dusty conditions so I still love 'em
but I wonder how well they might work out west. In summary, they great
unless you live in the dust bowl in which case some experimentin' might be necessary. | | Overall Rating: |

I really like them it helps me a lot when riding. I tried huffy 3M and all this other stuff that didn't work, until my lizard skins velcro i really enjoy it whole lot bedt thing that every happened my uncle is lance larson that owns all of the lizard skins man i she a reallly great man. This things keep the dirt out and they are light. A little hard to put on my Marzocchi bomber. I have ridden through mud , dust , and on the road. they really keep the fork super clean. I give them 4 chillies because they were very hard to put on. | | Overall Rating: |
