Date Reviewed: May 30, 2009
Favorite Trail:Douglas Falls
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Spokane Bikes
Strengths:It's a very sturdy, indestructable bike, with a alright stock setup.
Weaknesses:The weakness is the brakes(the tend to loosen during long downhill sessions), the shocks(very gunky, wobbely, sticky and loose)
Bike Setup:2005 fire mountain standard exept for shocks and tires. Switched out the shocks for RockShox Boxxer. Switched tires to Specialized Chunder DH
Bottom Line:This is an amazing bike for learning on, but shouldn't be taken to the next levels. Its best feature is the frame, so if you swap everything else out,you have a good setup...

Date Reviewed: January 27, 2008
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:fullcyclebikes.com
Strengths:Super strong frame, Paint job, Kona, Wheels, Looks good
Weaknesses:Chainrings, Pedals, Tires, Rotors
Bike Setup:Kona Fire Mountain, RaceFace Evolve DH Crankset, Azonic Outlaw Wheels, Azonic Hot Seat Saddle, Planet-X Clingon 2 Pedals
Bottom Line:People say the wheels are a weakness. I disagree, I'm 235 lbs, my last two bikes the wheels would come out of true after a week of high speed curb jumping. I am rougher on this bike and after three months the wheels were still perfect. I only had to replace them because I was flying down the sidewalk and an SUV turned in front of me. Needless to say broadsiding an SUV at decent speeds my front wheel & seat got destroyed as they would on any bike. His insurance paid for the entire bike though =D. After the wreck the frame is in perfect condition along with all the other components. Previously I laid the bike over on some black ice, one of the pedals was torn off easily. I ride daily to and from work so the majority of my riding is in the city, though I pedal hard and ride fast, jumping any curbs that may be in my way, it still doesn't make sense that my outer chainring folded after just a month in those conditions. (I hadn't even had a chance to hit a good trail) So therefor I have to list that as a weakness and bump my overall rating down to 4... Still love Kona though. Also my rotors before the accident seemed to be a little warped, maybe I just use my breaks too much when I'm in the city or maybe I'm just picky and everything needs to be perfect for me...

Strengths:Looks great. Smaller frame sizes for guys like me. Comes equiped with good overall gear, but all very very low end.
Weaknesses:Everything breaks! Shocks, brakes, chain, pedals, gears need continual tuning, tires warp. Be very gentle with this one. Kona is simply trying to entice the buyer with what looks good but in the end, this product should be avoided unless you only want to ride it on Sundays to buy ice cream and look cool.

I have had better endurance and performance from a Supercycle or department store bikes. For the price buy a Brodie, much better.
Similar Products Used:Supercycle
Bike Setup:Stock setup. Low end gear from manufacturers that should know better.
Bottom Line:Avoid it if you want to do real mountain biking. For casual city riding and jumping curbs, there are better and cheaper choices.

Submitted by Jacob Scheid a Weekend Warrior from Illinois
Date Reviewed: March 3, 2007
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:Williamson bicycle of Madison WI
Strengths:Good frame (so I am told); great geometry--for me; a good fit for someone who is just getting into the sport; disc brakes--even though they are *ahem* not exactly the best--they work better than v-brakes any day; sturdy, if low-end, fork.
Weaknesses:Well, the low end parts...but since one is able to buy a single major part (take your pick)for the price--I can't complain about that.
Similar Products Used:Micargi: (never purchase--in my defense--i didn't know what i was doing). Raleigh M60? frame: (I still like and own that frame, and it will probably get the old parts from the Kona--if my brother doesn't snatch them first).
Bike Setup:Stock except for Crank Bros Candy SL's and XT derailleur. Oh, and the new Marzocchi MX Pro ETA/TAS that I haven't gotten yet.
Bottom Line:Great bike for the price. Will be upgrading more components and (hopefully) racing it on a low level this summer. Then maybe will upgrade to a nicer XC racer if time and $$ permit. But great starter bike/frame.

Date Reviewed: February 18, 2007
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Pedal Pushers
Strengths:low price, relatively durable frame, good frame geometry, low price
Weaknesses:fork, rims, handlebars, pedals, brakes
Bike Setup:stock drive train, Shimano PD-M520 pedals, Titec Hellbent handlebars, Deore XT hubs, Manitou R-Seven fork
Bottom Line:The Alex Ace-18 rims constantly come off true. I had to true them twice a month. I bent the rear rim a few months after getting this bike.

I bent the steel handlebars within a few weeks.

I replaced the WTB saddle when I first got the bike because it was too wide and simple wasn't for me so I got a Velo racing saddle, but I tore the seat cover and bent the rails in a crash (my fault). Now I use a Serfas Aria saddle (which i highly recomend).

The Hayes mX2 brakes work better than V brakes but need to be fine tuned about once a week.

The Suntour XCT fork is dose not function very smoothly and I broke it after about 6 months. Also it rebounded way to slowly to absorb the next impact.

I weigh only about 142 lbs. and I've inflicted this much damage to my bike.

But I highly recommend the frame. It has a stiff feel and is lightweight.

If you can only afford to spend $500 dollars and are not an extremely aggressive XC rider like me, I would highly suggest this bike. But if you can afford better you should definitely get better.

Date Reviewed: December 19, 2006
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Asahi Bikes, Japan
Strengths:Good value - provides a solid platform for dirt and urban exploring. Fairly upright riding position and plush saddle make it a comfy rig for longer rides. Frame is very solid and well put together.
Weaknesses:As with any bike at this price point, compromises are made in the spec. The crank in particular stands out as rather low end. But again, can't complain as you get what you pay for.
Similar Products Used:This is the first Kona I've ridden.
Bike Setup:Fully stock.
Bottom Line:I picked this bike up (a 2007 model) to keep at the in-laws place in Japan. Given that we only get over there 1-4 times a year for a few weeks at a time, there seemed little point in going with a more expensive ride. And this bike gets the job done - solid feel thanks to the bomb proof frame, mechanical disc brakes that so far work fine, and a simple rock shox fork to soak up the bumps. This is a solid ride for weekend/occasional use or for someone just getting into the sport. For more frequent riding, a few extra dollars would be well spent for a plusher, adjustable fork and more durable components.

Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Straus d.o.o.
Strengths:At first, it was definetly the price i payed for it. But now i found out that this bike is almost unbreakable. Ofcourse, if you're freeriding or downhilling consider a proper bike for it, but for a XC Firemountain is a pretty good choice (considering the price).
Weaknesses:Stock tyres (CST), cranks, the fork (Sountour XCT).
Similar Products Used:Wheeler Pro39
Bike Setup:Stock. Saveing money for the new fork... Put a new paire of tyres (Rytchey Z-Max comp)
Bottom Line:I really love my Kona. It has a perfect gometry, and the frame is ulmost undestructible. Put a new pair of Tyres, change the fork if you're riding somewhat agressively, and you'll have a friend for a long time.

For some reason in my town it is hard to find an in stock bike that would fit me. Kona's 22" frame is perfect. I have about 200 miles of trails on the bike and have not had any issues. I would highly recommend Kona to anyone. T

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $160.00
Purchased At:From a fat kid.
Strengths:Money goes into the stout, quality frame with nice welds and good paint.
Weaknesses:Money saved on some nasty components.
Similar Products Used:Diamond back something, Raleigh M40.
Bike Setup:16" Fire Mountain. RaceFace Evolve tubing, RaceFace Turbine Cranks/BB, Sram 5.0 8spd Chain/Cass, Sram Rocket Twisters Deore Derailleurs, Avid SD7 leavers and brakes, Trusty Velo Saddle. Oh, and Marz EXR fork.
Bottom Line:I bought this bike in excellent condition cheap. I intended to use it as a sort of around town bike to beat on. Then I damaged my Rocky Mountain Element last season and I took out the little Kona so I didn't miss any rides. At first me and my friends joked about it, but really I was won over by the frame's Perfomance even with the so-so componnts. Stuff on it started breaking, so I started replaceing it with nicer stuff. Before I knew it I was riding it all the time so I did a frame swap with my Rocky and couldn't be happier!

This bike is just about perfect for a rider who plans to upgrade. The money goes into a frame taht's a real keeper and the components are passable bits that you won't feel bad about replacing.

If I had any complaint it would be that the long top tube may not be to everyone's liking. At first I though I would have preffered longer stays and shorter top tube, but with a short enough stem I eventually got the fit right. Still the geometry may not be to the liking of a pure XC rider.

Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Cheap Cheap Cheap! Great frame for what you pay, looks great and stands out, only part of the bike i havn't trashed. Stands up to whatever you do to it, kona frames are great.
Weaknesses:It's a great deal but you still get some of what you pay for. The Acera derailer had to go, and i DESTROYED my back wheel as soon as i discovered how fun jumping off stuff is.
Similar Products Used:nothin
Bike Setup:Kona Firemountain, Hussefelt stem/bar, azonic platforms, sram x7 trig shifters and derailers, rhyno lite XLs on XT hubs
Bottom Line:If you need a mountain bike to get into the sport, seriously consider a firemountian or a similar kona. Great bikes, this one helped me find something I love to do now and can't get enough of. FOr value I would probably give this bike 6 chilis if i could, and still a real nice bike overall. I must admit that some of the components, (AHEM acera shimano) arn't the top of the line, you'll probably need to pick up a new bike or at least upgrade this one. However this thing is cheap enough so that it really doesn't matter. I know plenty of people that pay more for a wheelset than i did for my whole bike.

Purchased At:New Revolution Cycles
Strengths:For the price, you get a nice frame and fork compared to other bikes in this price point.
Weaknesses:Some of the components are pretty junky compared to bikes in the same price point.
Similar Products Used:Kona Kikapu, Raleigh M60
Bike Setup:Not a thing is stock, which tends to happen when you work at a bike shop and you have a nicer bike that gives this one hand-me-downs.
Bottom Line:Kona has a weird way of putting together a bike. For $450, you get a really decent frame and fork. The Acera rear derailleur, single-wall rims, and steel handlebar kinda suck though. The rear derailleur is cheap enough to upgrade to Deore, so that makes a huge difference. In all honesty, the wheels aren't that bad. I've been riding those on another bike for a while without any trouble.

This bike has gotten out of hand for me. I originally purchased it to ride to class. I didn't intend to upgrade everything. Originally, I threw on my Deore derailleur from my old bike I sold after I got this one, plus it had some nicer brakes, so those upgrades cost me nothing. I slowly kept putting nicer parts on this bike as I upgraded my full suspension, which meant free hand-me-downs. Eventually, it got too nice for me to feel safe leaving it locked up on campus. Now, it has a Marzocchi MX-Comp fork, Deore/LX drivetrain, carbon bars, IRD stem and seatpost, Cane Creek S2 headset, Truvativ Firex ISIS cranks, Avid brakes, and an Araya/Deore wheelset. Now it seems the parts are almost too nice for the frame. I will probably buy a new Tomac hardtail frame and cut all the parts over. Then I can build up the fire mtn with a rigid fork and use it as a sweet campus commuter like I originally intended.

Bottom Line:Great bike and very cheap compared to the competition. Tires have very low profile knobs and have very little traction on loose over hardpack and when going up steep climbs. Other than that they roll amazingly fast and have great wear. Handlebars not really a weakness since I broke them doing an insane stunt for this bike and am lucky nothing else broke. Stock derrailers are slow and clunky. Upgrade to Deore at least for much faster and crisper shifts as well as saving some weight. Easton ec70 carbon bar was a great upgrade, reduces weight and vibration. Kona is the best.

Purchased At:Trail Blazer Cycles
Strengths:Geomtery, price (even at regular price), frame, fork (in the MSRP Price range), seat, grips, Paint scheme
Weaknesses:Acera/Altus componentry on the front and rear derailleurs isn't that good, tires, rims, pedals. None of these are exactly weaknessess, but the weaker points.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Stock except for an Acera Front Derailleur instead of the Altus (LBS had that installed for some reason but I'm not complaining because it's a higher model then the Altus).
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money at $449 US or $649 Canadian. Look around as deals can be found right now on end of season bikes. The Hahanna has replaced it for the 2005 season but the only differences are paint, fork travel, headset, front derailleur, and rims. Nothing too big there. Very smooth drive train, shifting isn't as smooth but at this price point you can't complain. Fork and frame are super awesome and blow anything else in this price range out of the water. Tires and rims are alright. Only rode it for 2 days however and will post an update after I get 100km of riding in (only have 20 right now). Grips are awesome, seat is avereage and the rest I can't really comment on. This bike is a recreational mtb and shouldn't be used often for technical trails or 4 foot drops but it could take it if you wanted it to, just not all the time. All in all, a great bike on or off road.

Favorite Trail:everything, as long it's steep
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $649.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:everything (geometry, frame, brakes, fork, Deore stuff, price etc.)

The price above is the price I paid over here in Switzerland converted in US-dollars.
Weaknesses:no disc mounts (not a problem for me, but just in case...).
The Alex rims are definitely not their premium models, but for XC, as I use the bike, they're strong enough (not shure how they would hold up if you do drops, jumps etc.)
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper, Specialized Hardrock Pro, Trek 4500 and some other bikes.
Bike Setup:Stock. Mine is a Special Edition model with full Deore (F/R Derailleurs, shifters, chain, 11-32 9spd freewheel etc.), basically the same as the Blast without the disk mounts
Bottom Line:First, I wanted to upgrade my old 98 Rockhopper with a new fork, but then I decided to sell it and to get me a new bike instead. The Kona was the best bike in the price-range I was looking for in terms of components, riding position, bang for the buck.
Very smooth ride, perfect out of the box, Deore front/rear works like a charm, good climber for the weight (19" frame, 29.8lbs).
First, I thought about a bike with discs. But all the bikes in this price range have mechanical disc brakes which have no stopping power and just plain suck, especially if you're 6" and 240 lbs. So I went with the Tektro V-Brakes.

The reason for this is that i treated this bike like a dirt jumper (so I deserved to walk, and I know it, but I just had to test it out), Kona warantied everything and let me pay a little extra for upgrades on the parts that i broke. I sold the bike and now ride a kona hoss...this will be my last bike...BOTTOM LINE IS.....KONA BIKES RULE
