Date Reviewed: November 29, 2001
Favorite Trail:Tryon Park
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:orginal equipment on Kona
Strengths:They endured a long time, longer that I should have let them
Weaknesses:Tread was breaking off from the beginning.
Hard tread compound make wet, roots or rocks in combination with cornering absolutely terrifying.
Similar Products Used:IRC Mythos XC (wire & Kevlar)
Bike Setup:Kona Lava Dome with lots of new pieces...
Bottom Line:Kona Break and Enter are a pretty poor tires. For the longest time I thought I wasn't getting some basic skills down when riding in wet conditions. People I ride with suggested to get different tires. Ever since I changes tires, life's been MUCH better!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:came with the Cinder Cone.
Weaknesses:tires were totally gone after a 1 week bike trip to the mountains in georgia, they did not last at all.
Similar Products Used:maxxis - very good
Bike Setup:Kona Cinder Cone - was stock at the time when I had these tires on it.
Bottom Line:If they come on your bike get a few rides in on them and then get some new ones. I really like the Maxxis tires, I havnt had any problems with them.

Date Reviewed: November 3, 2000
Favorite Trail:Shroom Zoom
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $14.00
Purchased At:Ride On!
Strengths:I only got the break (rear) Climbs super well, brakes well and drifts nicely on the corners, hasn't pinch flatted (i'm ~190lbs) Works well even though it looks half destroyed.
Weaknesses:The rubber is soft and some of the knobs are partially broken but it still works. Don't use as a front tire! very scary handling, yes I was dumb.
Similar Products Used:Some sort of ritchey tires with a bit of center tread that came on my bike. They didn't work as well when they were worn.
Bike Setup:Z4 Panaracer fire XC on front.
Bottom Line:This is the best tire setup I've had with the fire XC on front and the break on the back. Very well balanced handling with super climbing and braking.
I don't mind that they look chewed up as they still work good. Heck it makes me look like a burly, tire shredding, biking maniac.

Submitted by Brandon a Cross Country Rider from Denver, CO USA
Date Reviewed: August 14, 2000
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Cheap, good in the mud
Weaknesses:wears out very quickly
Similar Products Used:Geax, Tioga, etc.
Bike Setup:98 Kona NuNu, STX cranks, Z2 Bam, XT/LX mix, ritchey clipless
Bottom Line:These tires wear out too quickly. I am looking at replacing them very soon. The center knobbies are cracking and falling off. Bad. However, these guys still get the job done. It's just that you wouldn't want to keep them too long if you were doing serious riding.

Date Reviewed: May 1, 2000
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Nice tread design. Does really well in the mud especially with lower tire pressure.
Weaknesses:Compound is too soft, Wear is not as good as it should be, and they are not nearly tough enough for serious riding.
Similar Products Used:tioga and maxxis
Bike Setup:98 Kona Cinder Cone stx-rc front/LX rear derall, Z3 BAM 80 Bomber shocks
Bottom Line:Would not recommend to anyone who is doing some serious riding. they are just not tough enough.

Submitted by Trev Simpson a Weekend Warrior from Stoney Creek, Ontario
Date Reviewed: April 29, 2000
Favorite Trail:anything fast and windy
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Good tread design, overall good grip, cornering etc.
Weaknesses:wear REALLY quickly.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Master Contol, michellen wild grippers
Bike Setup:98.5 Kona Muni Mula w/syncros riser, race face system, XT drivetrain and brakes, grip shift plasma shifters, BMX flat pedals
Bottom Line:The Tires worked great until I went to Quebec on a bus trip. By the end of the weekend all the dual slalom and Down Hill riding ripped majoraty of the treads from the middle of the tire. Anyone who rides on gravel rail trail would love them.

2 chillis for value (Kona could have provided better)

3 chillis for the cornering and overall PROFORMANCE (not durabillity)

Favorite Trail:McSh*t
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Cheep, Not too heavy
Weaknesses:Poor grip, mediocre durability, skinny
Similar Products Used:Maxxis kraken, Michelin hot-s
Bike Setup:Kona Fire mountain, Manitou SX-S
Bottom Line:These tires aren't as bad as some say. Sure, they're not top quality, but what do you expect stockwise? As for durability, I ride both on and off road on these tires, and they've held up o.k.
I wouldn't buy these tires, but I'm not about to get another pair.

Favorite Trail:The Fells
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:None
Weaknesses:Everything, nobbies on the rear wore off in about two weeks! Came stock with my Kona Caldera, have since upgraded with Tioga factory slicks, much better. I notice Kona has not put these tires on any of their 00' models, hmmmm interesting.
Bike Setup:Kona Caldera, lx\xt, Bomber Z-4.
Bottom Line:These tires suck, the only positive thing I can say about them is......they really suck.
