$800.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS - Dizzy Cycles | | Strengths: | Fork is great
Frame is bombproof
Decent spec for this type of bike
Great Kenda tires. Still stock after 3 yrs of hard riding, and knobs aren't totally worn yet
Shifters and brake levers fit hand well
Can climb alright for a 36lb freeride bike
Good for dirt jumping | | Weaknesses: | Heavy - mine weighed in at 36 lbs.
Brakes seem 'dull'
Gear setup (2 and 8) is strange; run out of gears
Inner tubes aren't great, no biggie though
Brutal grips | | Similar Products Used: | Nothing worth mentioning | | Bike Setup: | Totally Stock | | Bottom Line: | It is a great bike to get you into the hardtail freeride world. But, if you want to get substantially better, it is well worth your money to upgrade. I was very happy with the bike, as it does exactly what it should, and was a great introduction to this level of bikes. Hydro brakes and lighter components, including a frame that weighs less than a ton, make a big difference, and while you will pay more, it will be worth your money. The bike jumps well, but you need to get it moving. Overall, great intermediate hardtail bike. Very pleased. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Grips are THE WORST EVER grips, change them !!!!!!!! | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Stock at the moment. Getting a lighter saddle, routing the front brake through the top cap or just taking it off, converting it to single ring i.e 8 gears. Probably cutting down or getting a new bars, definetly getting new grips. Getting a new fork ( either rockshox argyle or marzocchi DJ2 ) | | Bottom Line: | Buy last years model (2007) cheap and do your own DIY converting. And get a new fork !!!!( if u get the DJ4)
This bike is great for beginner dirt jumpers, teenage weekend hackers and people who ride to work on their MTB
Note: I only give it 5 chillis for value because I got it less than half price

$600.00 | | Strengths: | solid frame, has strong wheels as long as you keep your spokes tight. Great tires. The forks aren't bad. They are heavy but they can take some abuse. I love the mechanical brakes it has. Believe it or not the bashguard it comes with is tough also. | | Weaknesses: | If you are short the frame is a little tall. You get used to it but I got spoiled riding bikes with a super low standover height . The cranks will bend and/or break on you if you plan to use this bike for what it was intended for. Use them till they do though. I used mine while they were extremely bent for a while and they at least did the job. The derailleur is complete garbage. Replace it ASAP. The pedals seized up on me eventually but if you take them apart and clean it out and regrease it then it is fine. | | Similar Products Used: | Santa Cruz Jackal, Black Market Riot/Mob, Specialized P2 | | Bike Setup: | 07 Kona Shred frame. Stock bars, seatpost, pedals and rear wheel with Maxxis Minion 2.35. Hussefelt 40mm stem, Saint cranks and derailleur, Atomlab front wheel with Maxxis Mobster 2.5, Pike 426 coil forks. | | Bottom Line: | If you are just starting out then this is a great buy. It isn't the greatest setup but for the money it was well worth it. Replace the derailleur as soon as possible if you want to save a lot of aggravation or just go singlespeed. I had to adjust it after every ride and that got old quick. The bike is pretty easy to manual. It spins great and it has a great balance. It's my first attempt at riding DJ, and I've grown up accustomed to XC bikes.
I did a lot of research and compared it against the Cannondale Chase and a few others. I like that the Shred is versatile, it handles lovely for trail riding as well as bombing it downhill. I feel comfortable messing around in Urban/Street environments on it too
It can climb up the hill like a goat, and pounce on its prey the whole way down the mountain like an endangered Russian Snow Leopard.

$500.00 | | Purchased At: | Ebay | | Strengths: | I have the '06 model (grey with black graphics). It has a Ridgid frame, saddle is quality, brakes are good, pedals are dope. Entry level running gear for a decent price. Componentry can be upgraded later, so, I like what it had for the money. Rides great, feels pretty stiff, good for bombing urban missions. | | Weaknesses: | I found that a just after I got the '06 Shred my cranks loosened up, backing out the dust shield and the allen screw that cinches down the crank arm. But, sonce Kona is an excellent brand that stands behind their product, they took the bike in, got me brand new cranks, and never asked for reciepts or warranty cards. Kona is awesome about customer service issues. Go Kona, I'm pleased. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized P2,Trek Jack,Gary Fisher Bitter. | | Bike Setup: | Now I have an Easton Vice bar mount, Titec handlebars, Azonic platform pedals, and HOPE seat clamp, NiteRider digital lighting system. | | Bottom Line: | I give it a 4 outta 5 chilis becuse of what you get for the money. If you are limited on cash and you want a respectable bike with a great frame feel and ridgity, then go with the '06 Shred. The dealers that I talked to love to sell Kona because they are flexible and are behind the product. Bike is great for all around destruction and urban sessions. Try it, you'll dig it! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$700.00 | | Purchased At: | Ashland Cycle Sport | | Strengths: | This is an update since my last review: I swapped out some of my old components, and now the bike pretty much rocks. I traded in my old mechanical brakes for the Hayes 9 hydrolic; the stopping power is much better, and so far no lock-ups (compared to last time)! I also upgraded to Shimano Deore shifters and Shimano Deore LX rear derailuer. (I just completely botched that spelling!) Nine gears make the bike a little more versatile. I have also been using the bike mainly for DJing in the last few months. She feels right at home on (or over) the jumps. Several of my friends don't like the bike because of the weight, but I like the solid feeling of it. | | Weaknesses: | Grips and pedals. I can't keep my feet on the pedals for the life of me; it's even worse if the day is a little wet. The fork doesn't like bigger hits, although I've yet to bottom it out. | | Similar Products Used: | I've tried an upgraded Gary Fisher PHD, Trek Jack, and a Rocky mountain (I don't remember which model) | | Bottom Line: | Upgrade the brakes and shifters/deraileurs as soon as you can, and if you are bigger, think about getting a better fork. Other than that, it's just small things like the pedals and grips. I love this bike, and wouldn't trade it for any of the other bikes I've tried. If you aren't afraid of a little weight, this is a great bike. She handles everything from hill climbs to DH, and DJing to the skate park like a champ. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$634.00 | | Purchased At: | Back Bay Bikes \m/ | | Strengths: | Frame, bars, headset, stem, fork, pedals, brakes | | Weaknesses: | cranks, cranks, cranks, fork (ill explain), rear derailleur, seat post | | Similar Products Used: | gt backwoods, kona stinky, iron horse sunday wc, specialized enduro, enduro sx trail | | Bike Setup: | replaced seat post with thomson, cranks now hussefelt | | Bottom Line: | Bike is handling the learning curve like a damn champ. I'm 6'0 and 215lbs, and ride this bike daily as a commuter, and 2 to 3 times a week on hard, rocky NE terrain, as well as learning to DJ, and street ride with it.
The frame is bombproof. So stiff, no flex. I love it. The stem and handlebars are great as well! Rims got a little flat spot, but I'm not surprised considering I'm still learning, and no featherweight.
The fork is loud and clunky, not really adjustable, not really cushy, but I dont think I would be able to break unless I really tried. i.e. running over it with a van.
I bet the seat post jumping off some stairs and sketching the landing. Got a thomson, and thing is unbreakable as well.
The one real weakness is the cranks. After about a mouth I stripped the spleens; HOWEVER, the guys at truvativ sent me a new for free, and upgraded it to the hussefelt.
Similar problem happened again, but not nearly as bad. Truvativ sent another set out. Loc-tited the set on there, and havent had any problems. Is nice to have a back up set.
Bottom line. Upgrade the fork and cranks, and this bike simply will not stop. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$699.00 | | Purchased At: | Ashland Cycle Sport | | Strengths: | The frame is bomb proof. I am new to the sport, so I don't even want to count how many times I have wrecked the bike. I like the handlebars, They're good 'n solid. It's really light, despite the beefy build. I only weigh 125, and I can throw the bike around all day long. It transitions easily between singletrack downhill to bmx parks. This bike seems to handle it all! I like the fork, even though I have tried better. It has never bottomed out, and absorbes impacts wonderfully. Grippy tires. For the money, this bike is worth it! | | Weaknesses: | I always seem to be adjusting the cables for my shifters. (What the hell are they called? See, I'm still new to all this!) The brakes started squeaking the day I bought the bike, but other than that they work fine. I blew the grips clean off the first time I wiped out. | | Similar Products Used: | p.2 | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | This is a great all around bike. Light enough to cruise up hills and sprint around the track, but burly enough to handle some intense DH and jumping. the price is great, especially if you are not into spending thousands on a bike. $1000.00 | | Purchased At: | fife cycles | | Strengths: | frame... amazing frame which lets minimal shocks through and is very strong and easily upgradable! The fork travel is great and never bottoms out but gets full travel over big jumps or drops. Good back brake (Best cable disc brakes). Great handle bars | | Weaknesses: | Forks... they have top out (when they make a noise when they get fully extended) which happens straight away (very distracting). Front brake just doesn't work well at all! Crank arms need tightened every few days! | | Similar Products Used: | Haro backtrail x2 (bmx if that counts) | | Bike Setup: | Just how it came | | Bottom Line: | (2006 model) This is a great bike and I have taken it over 5 meter gaps and off 4 foot drops and it has never brocken so far. I love the travel in the forks because it never bottoms out even though it is very close to it. The only thing I would like to change is the dirt jam comp forks to the dirt jam pro forks as they are very similar but don't make a noise everytime it takes off. You need to have an 8mm alan key with you at all times because the crank arm(s) have an awfull habbit off loosening them selfs.
over all... very good bike and a very good price (don't get a saracen, I have heard so many bad stories about them) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Not totally Kona's fault granted but they put it on the bike...Otherwise nothing. Price in the UK is quite expensive -£550 for entry level but compared to other manufacturers it seems on par. Maybe I'm just a tight git? | | Similar Products Used: | Stinky, Lava Dome, P2 | | Bike Setup: | Totally standard | | Bottom Line: | Great bike for playing about on:
Drops, did about an 8 foot on it to a nasty transition and it loved it!
Jumps, well my gran jumps better than I do but this is an excellent bike to learn on. Rims seemed really able to take a lot of abuse (ie my dodgy landings...)
Being a HT rather than a big heavy full sus bike its a little more versatile and you can ride it up hills really quite easily!
Components cheap but decent enough branded stuff, fine but for those brand snobs who need to pay £200 for a crank that does the same job as the £50 on the Shred...you know the people!
Overall great bike, save for brakes and that abomination of a fork arghhh :-) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$779.00 | | Purchased At: | BIKE SHOW! | | Strengths: | Frame (so solid), fork, rims, tires, pedals, cranks, bar, stem......the whole bikes amazing. The price is another thing, i got it on discount at the bike show, but even at normal price its an amazing deal. Its such a sexy bike to look at and it lifts so easily:) | | Weaknesses: | ive heard the grips ware down fast, but ive had no problems. Rear derailleur sucks, and i have lots of chainslap.
| | Similar Products Used: | Norco bigfoot, Norco Rival, Fuji panic comp
| | Bike Setup: | stock but with a new rear deore derailleur | | Bottom Line: | amazing bike for the price, i picked up the 2005 model (recommend paying the extra money to upgrade from the 2004). If your looking for a great bike for beginner or advanced DJ, streetriding, and some trails i guess, this bike is amazing it can take big drops, gaps and whatever else you throw at it.

I bought the frame used from a shop employee and built it up as a single speed. I am going the put a gyro on, but I have to have a mount machined for under the headset. You can ride the stock parts until they break and upgrade for less than the cost of many other dirt jump bikes. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$530.00 | | Purchased At: | Gear Works Cyclery | | Strengths: | The frame is like a rock. Can take a beating. Crankset is awsome. Tires are great too. Fork is alright but not great for FR. Its an XC fork. Best bang for the Buck I've seen. Upgrade as you go. Rims still haven't even started warping after a couple of 6ft drops. | | Weaknesses: | Fork kinda sucks. Needs disk brakes Acera deraillers definatly don't belong on this bike. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! | | Similar Products Used: | Haro Escape 8.1, Scrap | | Bike Setup: | Stock except shimano deore disk brakes | | Bottom Line: | This is the best bike you will find for the price. $528.00 | | Purchased At: | The Outdoor Store | | Strengths: | Well this bike can take some pretty hard $#!^ when you crashland from a big jump,it wont break on you easy, the crank, pedals, bars and the frame(godly)are gnarly aspects of this bike. The fork is alright u can go 4-5 feet to flat ground pavement pretty easily, more if you know how to land, theyre alright from some trails with even some bigger drops toppin 8 feet to flat soft dirt. This things got some sweet parts, but ive upgraded to DJ II's,there simply better for what i do.The bike is extremely cheap too for what it can take and do.I find it quite light and,the rims are really tough there almost still perfect after some hard, hard riding. | | Weaknesses: | Id have to say the brakes are the only thing that really bothered me,the back breaks fine but i would rather have it have came with even a 6' disk on the front, but i got 8' hayes from disk,so that was better, aside from that all is sweet, but a change of fork for bigger and more hardcore riding could be in store(wich is what i did) oh and the derailleur too, also the tires, they have little grip you id switch if you were someone who relies on there tires staying still while doign some sketchy moves, cause they may not be there for you when you need em'. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized P.2,Kona Stuff,Kona Scrap,Jamis Komodo,Brodie Bruzza and Brodie Hellion(all thanks to my good friends from London and Espo) | | Bike Setup: | All Stock exept DJ II fork,8" front hayes disk brake and grips from an old specialized hard rock. | | Bottom Line: | All in all this bike is sick, both for new and experianced bikers,i bought this bike cause i was low in cash and got alot more then what i payed for,so im happy, the original fork can take 8+foot drops to soft dirt of gravel, but i wouldent go that big to flat pavement, with the new fork can go 10+ on those terrains, ive yet to find a challenge that was 'too much'for the amazing frame,so it may not be a great cross country bike it kicks @$$ at what its meant for,its great for dirt jumping and alot more then that,if you put any disk brakes on it without even a new fork you still got yourself a gnarly bike.Keep Shreddin' | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$700.00 | | Strengths: | frame, price, wheelset, crankset | | Weaknesses: | kona sizing, tires, stem, rear derailleur | | Bike Setup: | I changed the rear der. with a deore, the stem with a shorter one | | Bottom Line: | very good bike! the cheapest on the market but ready to ride. the frame is simply beautyfull. I have to notice the size kona uses for this bike: i got a M but the horizontal tube is long as a L of other brands; from XS to S there is less then half inch, from S to M there is more than one! and back from M to L half inch! why? take care choosing your size. for my height the S would be better. the fork is the leak point of this bike (not relatively to the price payed): it's too hard and it works for his 100mm only in very big gaps. it also returns too faster, take care riding it as you got an idraulic fork! it isn't! the other stuff is really ok. I just changed the rear der. 'cause it didn't look so cool and the stem with a shorter one. you can add disc brakes when you want, it's ready. the front tire slips and the rear one loses side knobs. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Avid SD-5 Brake lever front, Shimano Acera X shifter brake combo for rear. Maxxis Lopes Bling Bling 2.35 Tire on rear, Tioga Facotry DH 2.1 on Front. Easton EA-70 Riser bar. | | Bottom Line: | An awesome value, minus a few weak components that can be upgraded as you destroy them...you get a truly burly and agile frame. The Tioga Tires have weak sidewalls and little wet grip for urban riding. The standard Kona handlebar bent a month after I got the bike a on 6 foot stair gap, the dealer called me a few days later and told me that there was a recall on the Shred's handlebars and they sent the Easton as a free replacement. The fork is tolerable, but upgrade to a Z.1 or a DJ1,2,3 ASAP (my next upgrade). The brakes are weak, but a front disc would cure the most of it. The wheels are strong as an ox, I flatted on a rocky downhill and then rode for 3 miles down more rocky trails to get back to my car on the flat....my rear rim had no skips or flat spots! damn strong! Buy this bike if you want to get into serious riding...it can do more than you can, and if you upgrade a few parts here or there as you can it can be a really sick ride! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$560.00 | | Purchased At: | Olympic Sports Seattle WA | | Strengths: | Good value, frame is very strong , crank, good rideability on xc journeys. Cool paintjob. Strong Kona made components. | | Weaknesses: | tires a little sketchy and don't grip well on gravel, deraileurs cheesy and not intended for big hits(5ft drops), had to bring bike in to fix them. replacement might be good investment (deore,xt), Shift pods too bulky and some times stop working!!?? Pedals arn't so great, don't have the replaceable pins and are slippery in wet, bike with stock setup is not such an excellent climber. Cowan grips get funky and start moving around, why are they named after such a good rider? | | Similar Products Used: | friend's Specialized Enduro Expert HT (Good bike) | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | Bought bike on sale with free disc thrown in. Good Value, simply upgradable if you don't like some of the spec. good for freeriders and stutpullers. Enjoy riding trails, jumping, free riding, and doing stunts. $550.00 | | Purchased At: | coates cyclery | | Strengths: | I love this bike. It has a strong frame with great geometry and very agile. Great balance when in the air. | | Weaknesses: | Breaks, forks were pretty soft at first but now after a few jumps and bumpy trail rides they seem to get better. The pod shifter/lever they just feel to flimsy to me. Seat is just way to fat for comfort and the tires don't hook up going up much less going down. | | Similar Products Used: | giant yukon, kona coiler (best bike ever) | | Bike Setup: | xt 9speed drive train, lizard skin grips, maxxis mobster 2.5, heys hydro 8", clipless, azonic lover seat, rest stock (stock-32.2 lbs / upgrades-33.5 lbs) | | Bottom Line: | This is a great all-round bike. It really does it all. I have done trails, downhill, jumps, and urban bashing and it took it all. The upgrades I did are more of a preference than a necessity. I think if you do some serous downhills and jumps you will need to upgrade the fork, brakes, and tires for sure. I plan to get a Sherman flick soon. If you do some climbs you mite want to go from 8 to 9 speed and get rid of those wacky shifters while your at it. They don’t take hits very well. Yea the bike is heavier than others in its class but so what. Those bikes would fall apart if you put them thru what this bad boy can do. It’s just to heavy for racing but its perfect for fun. When you go riding for fun you try stuff out and do things that you normally wouldn’t do. In turn you’re going to fall sooner or later. Simply get up find and pick up your bike and continue. It’s that simple, the confidence that this bike inspires and all the abuse it can take is just amazing.
Bottom line is if you’re looking for a bike that can do it all and not dig deep into your pocket. Then this is the bike for you.
4 flaming chilies because of those silly shifter/lever pods and tires. 5 for overall | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
