Strengths:Solid frame and fork and wheels. Looks good and weight makes you confident. Good to ride and nice to upgrade. I could go on for ever!!!! and the price and cranks are good too!!.
Weaknesses:My frame got a crack after about 8 months but only cus i bin riding it hard and aparently it was a manufacturing defult so Kona sent me a new one. The one that cracked was an 02 frame. The pedals arent that grippy in the wet.

Bottom Line:This bike is the best for under a grand. Kona has great after sales service. The bike feels nice to ride. The rigid fork is great but i prefered the feel of sus. It is up to youabout rigid or sus. I weigh 16 stone and have been doing big drops. Buy one!

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Jubilee Cycles
Strengths:I have already posted a review about this bike a couple of months ago, but I want to add something new I learned. If you want to hear good things look at my earlier post.
Weaknesses:**** THIS BIKE'S FRAME SUCKS! **** REAR PART OF FRAME IS WEAK!!!!!!! the front looks damn solid, but the rear is wimmpy! I bent it landing hard of a 2 foot drop!

kona, here is a question: what's the damn point of making half of the frame strong, if the rest (rear) is crap?????
Similar Products Used:don't ask
Bike Setup:default, except 5 inch Z5 bombers, and a 3rd ring + 3rd ring rock guard
Bottom Line:The bike is great for the price, especially the 5 inch bombers (1000 Cdn) if you are just starting out and need a good overall bike. But be warned, the rear of the frame is weak, and if you start to ride hard (3 foot drops) it will bend.

I would recommend the 2001 Kona Stuff (put some 5 inch shocks on it if you can afford them though)

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $575.00
Purchased At:Steady Wrench
Strengths:Chromoly all the way.. geometry makes it feel like a 26" BMX bike.. beautifully compliant ride you expect from a steel frame.. major gusseting at the head tube.. "Ritchey" dropouts!! baayyybeeee...
Weaknesses:While the standard saying goes, its not the bike, its how you ride the bike, applies, its apparent the stock parts were intended to be consumables..
Similar Products Used:Balace aluminum.. Kona Chute.. Monte 26".. GT 24" cruisers..
Bike Setup:Deore LX trannies front & back (w/ matching shifters).. profile chromo tubular cranks (for mtb).. Avid Arch rivals front & back w/ matching levers.. Convertible from Marzzochi Z3 100 & P3 Kona Chromo fork.. Salsa Ace stem and race face real seal headset.. changed the wheels to 36 hole 4X rhyno lites (black of course).. running maxis 2.3 semi slicks.. and change to IRC 2.5 gator backs if I go trail riding (or tioga 1.85 rear/ 2.3 front in mud.. tee hee).. you should not ride in the mud!! wtf.. I Neeeeed to ride.. and life goes on rain or shine.. eh?
Bottom Line:wow........................................Kona Bikes Rule... see below.. Period of silence for respect to Kona Bikes follows:

This bike feels like a 26" bmx bike.. I certainly do trails with this bike, and crash, but I am learning trials on it and just getting the feel of lurches (been working on that for almost a damn year), so you can imagine I crash with this bike quite a bit.. so I've had to change derailers, cranks (chains of course), cassets and chain wheels several times now.. Frame is real tuff and compared to what I usually ride, it is way light.. for example, just for the hell of it, I ran in a XC race (being the downhiller I am, I was in the begginer class), and I placed 4th!, on this bike with 1 less chain wheel in the front.. Of course some big time triple x, world wrestling federation type hulking dude on a Surly single speed in the expert class won the race in class and over all,.. or else.. and he didnt even bring a gun! If you are like those guys in canada who do the north shore trails, this is the bike you should get for the urban assault.. Its intended for out of bounds riding and hits its mark.. If you are more into street or freestyle, stick with a 20" like Kona's Mama or something like that.. otherwise this bike is the BOMB!!!

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Jubilee Cycle
Strengths:Excellent over all bike! It's built very tough and simple.
Strong as hell frame and awesome shocks soak up jumps very well. I mostly do west-coast cross country which has a strong free-riding element (jumps 2-3 feet come often) and I never had a problem. I like the wheels and the handlebars (very good control and balance). The best thing about this bike is the price! bough it for $1000 Cdn (very few bikes around with similar setup for such a price).
Weaknesses:The stock tubes are awefull! I had to replace both within the period of 3-4 rides. Replaced them with heavy duty downhill tubes. Chain slaps around alot, I recommend you buy a stay protector before you lose all your paint. Everyone on this post is complaining about paint chiping of, I personally never experienced this and think that black paint is great just because it is so easy to paint over small scratches if they do occur.
Similar Products Used:Kona Stuff: also a very good bike (slightly lighter and with a more cross-country geometry, slighly better parts, but only 4" marzocchi shocks)
Bike Setup:mostly stock, but with Z5 5" Marzocchi shocks and 3 chain rings (+ a 3 ring bash guard).
Bottom Line:This bike is very good for the average mountain biker who enjoys both cross country and free-riding. Its generally light for its strong frame and large shocks and performs well on climbs. Its not a feather light cross-country racing bike, but with less weight there is less durability. I prsonally don't race much, and for me a bike that doesn't have to be fixed after every ride is much more important.

For free-riding it can manage well, but of-course its not a downhill machine. I don't do anything bigger than 3 feet, and anything within that range the bike can manage perfectly well. Overall great bike!

Purchased At:Crappy shop
Strengths:Strong frame - otherwise, none.
Weaknesses:Frames aren't welded straight. Mine wasn't, and being the newbie that I was I didn't notice. When I did notice, I took the bike back to the (horrible) shop I bought it from. The frame was no where near being straight (rear triangle improperly welded), yet Kona says it's straight.

Warranty sucks. All the parts broke within 2 months (with the exception of the derailleur). Kona has poor customer care.

Similar Products Used:Kuwahara Airies, very comparable in quality (because it was junk, but hey, the frame was straight).
Bike Setup:Krappy Kona.
Bottom Line:I will never buy another Kona bike.

Submitted by Me a Weekend Warrior from Here, Here, On Earth
Date Reviewed: February 6, 2002
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Some things.
Weaknesses:Kona, here's a tip: don't taper steel to an oval. My frame is now worthless because I tried to up a frame made of VERY SOFT wood, and now I have a big dent in my downtube. Ovalized steel is weak. Use a downtube protector if you even THINK of doing trials on this frame. Yeah, the frame is strong, but urban assault, which is what this bike is made for, requires the occasional up, even if you aren't a trials rider. Make sure you never try to up an obstacle over 2 feet high, you'll have a worthless frame.

Like I said, the frame is tough, can take a beating and keep on coming, but the ovalized tubing is just not a good idea, it makes the WHOLE frame stronger, but weakens the integrity of specific tubes.
I really like the bike, and the frame, but Kona needs to work on some things: 1. Don't ovalize steel tubes 2. USE A BETTER PAINT PROCESS FOR GOD SAKE. 3. Get someone intelligent to spec your bikes, and do research to see what other companies are offering at the same price point, for the same market segment.
Bottom Line:See Product weaknesses.

Price Paid: $859.00
Purchased At:lbs
Strengths:Fork: Z5 130 MM coil, frame, bars, grips, geometry.
Weaknesses:Wheels, could be half decent if they were hand built, but they're not so they suck, even for me I'm thrashing them and I weigh 150 lbs.
Salesman. Sold me a bike that was just too big for me, it felt good but not enough standover clearance (18"). Mountain Mix components are suck ass, already upgraded, except for derailleur. Cranks, flexy as hell, waiting for them to break so I can buy new ones. Paint sucks nuts, falls off like leaves off a tree in the fall. Pedals break easily, I snapped a tooth right out of the cage taking part of the cage with it. No rear disc tab = no 24" rear wheel, sucks. Welded on hanger bends easily, annoying.
Similar Products Used:Kona Stuff.
Bike Setup:Scab Frame, all stock except for Marzocchi Z5 130mm coil, titec berzerker dh saddle, cnc'd stem, SRAM 9.0 levers, SRAM centera shorty shifters, Zip tie chainguide.
Bottom Line:Great frame, mine needs to be smaller. Buy a extra small or a small. If I could go back I would've got a small. Salesman said it was fine for me, I think not, this was before I knew how important standover clearance was, jerk. Mountain mix crap sucks, needs to be thrown in the trash, falls apart too fast.

I'm not dissing the bike, but it could be a lot better for what you pay. Also, salesmen should reccomend sizes, not just let you take the first one you sit on. Once I progress a little, I'm dumping Kona for good. Frames are great, but the bikes cost too much because of the name and Kona's parts spec'ing is not very smart. If Kona were to smarten up a little bit, I'd buy another, but as it stands now I'm gonna stay away from them. When I ditch this frame I'm going w/ a .243 racing frame.

I still have a high rating for this bike, value is decent, and the frame is ungodly strong, you could run a Monster on this bike and not have to worry.

Value: 3 Because of junky components.
Overall: 5, because of the frame, only thing that makes this bike worth buying. Get frame only and make sure you get a 15" or smaller.

Favorite Trail:Downtown Vic
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Neverland Cycles
Strengths:+ Made from indestructible Kona XXX Chromoly
+ Huge gusset at the headtube ensures strength
+ Good geometry
+ Very beefy tubes
Weaknesses:- No rear disc tab
- Rear tire clearance, the biggest you can fit is probably a Maxxis Mobster 2.5
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Scab frame, KJF rigid fork, 2.35 Maxxis High Rollers front + rear, Bontrager Crowbars, Zac19 rims
Bottom Line:A great do-all frame. Has the potential to be up there with the best steel frames like the MinuteMan as long as a rear disc tab and increased tire clearance is added. The lack of a rear disc tab is probably the one reason this frame isn't more popular than it already is, but it doesn't bug me that much, although I will eventually sell this frame in order to get dual discs and bigger tires. The bottom line is though, that it is the perfect starter freeride frame and has incredible strength and quality. Buy one if you're looking to get into freeriding, or if you're already a freerider who owns a big full squish and you want an urban play bike, pick it up as well, you'll enjoy it

Purchased At:Olson's Bikes
Strengths:kinda beefy, huckable
Weaknesses:the back end is kinda wussy, but holds up ok, NO DISC MOUNT! thats the part that sucks. little tire clearence, but could probably squeeze a 2.4 but would track better witha 2.4 up front and a 2.25dh tire in back.
Similar Products Used:cove stiffee fr
Bike Setup:2000 z1 qr20 5", lx xt, tv chain guide, kona bulge cranks, tektro v's, grimeaca sys 8 up front, rynolites. Total jumping set up
Bottom Line:great for the $$$. Just put some magura hs33's on the back and some hayes up front on a 5" fork and you have a mean dirt jumper, ds or fr bike. It feels good, but is alittle weighty compared to a aluminum frame, but this will last alot longer. I think that kona also backs it witha 5 year warrenty too. But for the money you cant find a better frame.

Strengths:Good seat, beefy stem, nice geometry,
Weaknesses:Customer Service Sucks, Rims heavy and weak, Poor machining on most parts, almost no tire clearance, paint flakes off with a finger nail, TruVativ cranks rot, front skewer broke, handle bar flex scary-like, and the component group is an insult for the money...comperable bikes run atleast deore for the money, oh yeah, and did I say Customer Service Sucks!
Similar Products Used:Balance 350AL converted to dual-rigid
Bike Setup:Stock, but replacing the heavy/weak wheelset with a heavy/strong wheel set, trimmed knobs to clear seat-stays
Bottom Line:I'd rather have a sucky bike with a Customer Service Rep who cares, than this bike with a Rep that blows me off.

Favorite Trail:woodlot
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $860.00
Purchased At:LBS, 860 cdn
Strengths:Strong frame, rock ring, fork it came with (Z5), rideability.
Weaknesses:Cranks, drivetrain (shifts fine, just problematic on other bikes, so I'd assume this bike too), stock rims (out of true after first ride), ___PAINT___ (read below)
Similar Products Used:Stuff
Bike Setup:Stock Kona Scab, Marzocchi Z5 130mm, getting front disc soon, and some hussefelts.
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money, came with a Z5 fork which can take a good hit. I'm really choked about the paint though. I got the bike home and it had two chips in the paint right in the middle of the downtube (looks really bad). I've already ridden the bike (this is my 2nd day with it) and can't do jack about the paint chips, which really pisses me off. Also black is NOT a good color for a freeride bike, yeah, sure it looks nice and all, but black shows EVERYTHING.

Other than that the bike is sweet, buy this bike if you want a bike that can take a solid hit but don't have the money for all the best stuff (right away anyway).

Bottom Line:Very nice bike, I use it for urban assault, trials and dirt, but I also ride it to commute (30km/day).
At first I have a full suspension bike (Scott Octane with Z1 Drop Off), but I bought this rigid bike in order to improve my riding, to learn tricks and to learn the basis.
I can say that I'm not disapointed, this bike is great, strong, I can do jumps and drops, and with the rigid fork it's OK for trials, now I know more riding technics and it helps me improving my riding wih my full suspension bike !
I can recommand to anyone that want to improve his riding to try this kind of bike !
