Favorite Trail:South Burma - Rough Go
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Frame Geometry, Handling, Light Weight, Suspension
Weaknesses:Tires
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Magura Julies, Fox Vanilla 125R, Mavic 223's, Ritchey Riser Bar, XT components all the way around
Bottom Line:This is a great handling lightweight bike that can get you out and back everytime. The original forks were a bit flexy so I switched them out. The disc brake upgrade is a definite must. Add's a little weight but the difference in stopping performance is night and day. The rider position is very comfortable and encourages all day riding. The only minor complaint I have is that it bobs a little on serious uphills. It's an active suspension so it's expected but for those that like the hardtail feel you might want to look elsewhere. Great bike for technical single track!

Price Paid: $1400.00
Strengths:Light, nimble, quick, good suspension, little bob.
Weaknesses:Somewhat cheap components
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Sugar 3+, Fuel 90, Stumpjumper fs, GT i-drive,
Bike Setup:Stock, except for Mavic 317 disc wheels with Hayes hydralic brake in the rear and IRD dual banger hydralic brake up front.
Bottom Line:I have been riding xc for a long time on a light aluminum hardtail and was reluctant to make the transition over to full suspension. However, when I test rode this bike I instantly fell in love with how it feels. I test rode many other makes and models and nothing felt as natural and comfortable as the Mokomoko. It was also on sale as last years model so I couldn't resist. I had some small but frustrating problems with some of the lower end parts; the rear hub body went bad after a month of riding, I had to true both wheels every week and eventually needed to purchases a new rear wheel because I had a bend somewhere in the rim so I could never get it fully trued. Oh, and my the bolt near the bottom bracket that is one of the pivot points for the suspension came loose on a ride and the small ring on my sprocket would hit it and forced me to walk all the way home (8 mi). I couldn't tighten it myself on the ride because you have to take off your crank in order to get to it. I havn't had any real problems since than, and the bike has been a blast to ride ever since. The stronger rims and disc brakes make this the ultimate trailbike/xc racer that I have ever ridden. It climbs great with little to no bob and makes coming down more fun than ever. It really takes the abuse from the trail on long rides so that your body doesn't have to. Kona is a great bike company and this is a great bike. I really hope this bike lasts a long time because it is so much fun to ride.

Strengths:The mokomoko is a tough lightweight frame that keeps the fatigue outta my ass. I was afraid my climbing would suffer, but i have been able to mash bigger gears all the way up the steep climbs w/ this dual suspension. Both the sid fork and the fox float rl have been fantastic!
Weaknesses:I would like a rear lockout rear, one comes on the king kikapu, but i have only read bad reviews on those.
Bike Setup:stock, i haven't even taken off the mickey mouse ear handgrips.
Bottom Line:This bike rocks! For the money Kona hasn't missed a beat. Go buy an XC Kona. I saw four different ones at my last race.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1899.00
Purchased At:KSH Bike
Strengths:Good Specs all round. Doesn't feel like a 3" Shock at rear.
Weaknesses:SID XC. Not Impressed. The tires are a JOKE.Doesn't last that long.
Similar Products Used:Giant NRS 1,Fuel 98,Trek Y33,Heaps of Hardtails
Bike Setup:Stock except change to CT2 bars,Panaracer tires ( after the Hutchinson )
Bottom Line:Besides the SID and the tire complaints, its truly a very good trailbike. Thinking of changing the fork to something much much better than the SID.Maybe FOX Float RLCs.Those are the one that will excell with this bike. The shocks are beautiful.Soaks up small to huge bumps. Really impressed with Kona.Maybe I'll stick to KONA from now on.

Favorite Trail:The one I'm on!
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:If I had to use one word to describe this ride, it would be this, "NIMBLE". The bike is light, (the frame is the identical 4.5 pound frame used with the $2900 King Kikapu)quick, responsive. It climbs well, in and out of the saddle. Feels very confident when you head down the other side of the climb. No bob in the rear suspension when you hammer. The 3 inches of rear suspension are plenty to smooth out the trail and not too much that it feels "mushy." Lot's of size options. Great lines and looks. Kona is a great company to deal with! They still care about the customer. The Mokomoko begs to be ridden hard, fast, up, down, it has no limits!
If your looking for a great bike, that could easily be a "race" bike with a few upgrades, the Mokomoko is it. You do't have to spend the extra grand on the Kikapu.
Weaknesses:I didn't care for the grips (like that's a big deal!)
Similar Products Used:GT I-Drive, Fisher Suger, Giant NRS, Schwinn Rocket 88, Proflex 96 Beast, Specialized FRS
Bike Setup:Lot's of upgrades. I got the bike and swapped parts from my I-drive to make the Mokomoko better than it's $2900 big brother the King Kikapu. XTR shifters, v-brakes, brake handles, f & r derailleurs and chain. XT splined hollowtech cranks, selle elite saddle, fox float rc (lockout) rear shock, easton CT2 flat bars, ODI lock-on grips (Great!), Mavic Crossride wheelset with Hutchinson Python tires. Here's what I left stock, for now, Sid XC fork (love it, not gonna touch it) bottom bracket, stem, seatpost. I just ordered a pair of Crank Brothers Egg Beater pedals for it.
Bottom Line:I've ridden with a lot of guys and we often swap bikes for short times on the trail to "check out the goods." I know that many reviews end up being biased, who is going to rip a bike that they just spent $1000 plus on??? I won this bike in a give away. I had a good $2000 put in my GT I-Drive and was not looking to replace it. My plan was to strip any "upgrades" off of the Kona, put them on the GT and sell the Kona. But when I rode the Mokomoko there was no question. (Anybody shopping for an I-Drive!) I'm a well built 200 pounds and was afraid that the Kona wouldn't be able to handle my weight the way the GT did. It does it with ease! The bike was great stock, but why not upgrade it, I had the parts, it now weighs in at the supple 24 pound line that the King Kikapu does (they both use the same 4.5 pound frame)

Best ride I've ever owned or ridden.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1725.00
Purchased At:Cartecay River Bike Shop
Strengths:Light Weight. Tracks straight. Suspension feels longer travel than it is. A lot of bang for the buck. This bike can be raced as is without having to pump more money into it.
Weaknesses:I don't like the cables running above the top tube.
Similar Products Used:Trek Fuel 90, Fisher Sugar 3, Jamis Dakar Pro, Giant NRS 1.
Bike Setup:LX/XT, SRAM 11-34 cassette. Mavic Cross Ride wheelset. Avid SD5 v-brakes. IRC Serac tires. Speedplay frogs. This bike weighs 25 pounds with pedals, ready to ride.
Bottom Line:Great bang for the buck in a serious trail or XC racing bike without having to spend $3000.
