Favorite Trail:Currently: Gear Jammer
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:Private trade for a
Strengths:Everything! this bike is bullet proof. I am a big guy and I tend to punish bikes and this thing has taken everything I could dish out and more. It can descend any trail or hill, and then turn around and ascend the same hill or trail with ease. Also a beastly bike for freeriding, with my current setup the bike weighs a bit more then my stuff did and can take a million times the abuse.
Weaknesses:I have heard some bad news about the stock components but who really keeps bikes stock? I read some reviews of people doing 15ft drops to flat and breaking there stock bike, and all I can really say is you are either lying or dumb as hell. I am not sure if its the 26" rear or the width of the tire but on harsh drops I hear some rubber rubbing on the swing arm but thats my biggest beef with the bike.
Similar Products Used:Various other Kona bikes, I am a Kona man and thats it!
Bike Setup:2001 Kona Stinky Frame, Hayes 9 hydros with 8" rotor, blackspire badger cranks, blackspire ring god, shimano deore components, stock kona bars and stem, Fox Vanilla R, Marzocchi DJ1 fork, 2.5" Kenda Nevegal front, 2.3 Kenda Blue Groove rear, rhyno lite 26" front rim on axiom hub, singlewide tomac edition 26" rear rim on a DT Swiss hub, SRG adjustable seat, unknown black seat post.
Bottom Line:Replace your stock components for the most part with what can fit your budget as long as it isnt a downgrade. The majority of my bike was built up with 2003-2004 parts and its now 5 years later and its running strong. I havent done any severe work to the bike since I have owned it just kept everything lubed, greased and tight. This bike is bombproof and I would recommend it to any style of rider. It goes up, down, tracks like a roller coaster and takes up the bit hits like its a small curb. Every time I ride it I get a smile on my face! And if it can put up with North Shore abuse from my 210lb ass you can ride it anywhere, anytime. BUY ONE NOW DO NOT HESITATE!!!!

Strengths:hard as nails, this bike just keeps coming back for more!
Weaknesses:poor quality derailler hangers keep snapping. and then cost £16 to replace.
not quite enough rear travel for my liking
Similar Products Used:muddy fox freeride drift, marin b-17, kona stinky '00 model.
Bike Setup:'01 deelux frame with '00 fox rear shock. BETD travel extension plates at the back, '04 jnr t's hope c2's truvative cranks mavic/hope wheels,
Bottom Line:top quality bike, i've had this since 2001 and it just keeps going. i got some travel extension plates rather than forking out for a new frame with more travel and i dont think i will ever get rid of this bike until it finally dies (which will probably be never..)
i weigh 180lbs and i ride hard. this bike just takes it in its stride.
bottom line.

tires suck
no disk

Bottom Line:When i was just getting into freeriding i needed a bike better than the supercycle that was in my garage, so i went to my favourite used bike shop and he had this stinky hanging on the wall. i rode it around the parking lot and loved it. so i put it on layaway and in 2 monthsa it was mine. Now i can do 6 foot drops onto flat groung without it breaking a sweat. this is the best bike for anyone who is an all around freerider who likes to do anything.

Purchased At:Russ Hay's Bikes (Victoria)
Strengths:strength
Weaknesses:max tire dimensions. would really like to throw a fat tire on, no go tho.
Similar Products Used:Lefty (WTF is this bike about).
Stinky-D - awesome too, more plush ride, but more dough makes a broke rider no go.
Bike Setup:1 day after buying I snapped my chain, twisted the drivetrain (drive side spider), and bleh out the stem. Took it back in said WTF, and the good'ol'boys at RussHay's upgraded me cheap (top of line @ time). And since then, nothing, and I mean nothing. A couple of double wide/thick DitchWitches and the DiscBrakes, not a truing required.
Bottom Line:Used to be hardcore (ran outta $). Rode this beast for 1 year of extreme (e.g. 10-14ft Drops to flat cement), and the thing to this day doesn't even show any wear and tear. Kona Products are a dream come true for a rough-N-tumble guy like me. I'm rating this product vs the POS VPNs (2-4) that were out at the time. Therefore, best of the best at the time

Strengths:Great ride, I can take drops and dh trails without a problem. Makes a great freeride bike.
Weaknesses:Only 5 inches of rear travel, though you can purchase plates that upgrade it to 6 or 7. Not enough clearance to fit a 3.0 tire
Similar Products Used:Banshee Scream
Bike Setup:Original rear shock, Marzocchi Jr T fork, Avid Mechanical Disk brakes, Crowbar risers, Nokian Gazzaloddi 2.6 tires
Bottom Line:This is a great bike, i never regret buying it and I ride it all the time. If you're looking for a great, quality, DH and freeride bike I would immidiately reccommend the Stinky

Strengths:solid as a rock
coolest name ever!!
Weaknesses:weight - but only if youre a schmoadie skummmmm
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:frame review only.
Bottom Line:I bought a frame cheap and built it up as I saw fit. It rides beautifully and inspires confidence. It has made my riding improve tenfold in the short time I have had it. Super stiff ride, no hint of flex and very plush 4 bar linkage. The rear shock is good, but make sure you get the spring rate right and the rebound damping in the Vanilla R right to suit your weight. It is a little heavy, but it will make you a better rider! 5" of travel is luxurious. I love it.

Date Reviewed: May 10, 2002
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:This is a super bombproof frame and forks combo that will eat the lot and still allow you to trailride. Goes up the hills as well as down them. Freeride heaven. Even more of a hardcase than the 2000 model. Suspension Bearings hold up very well. I have done 3000 YES 3000 miles on mine.
Weaknesses:Apart from the frame and forks, junk the rest of the bike. Needs new wheelset, chainset, bars, saddle seatpost.. Hope enduro discs, I mean everything! HEAVY. EAts seatposts. They snap easily due to the angle and height they have to span.. Not happy with thin tyres.
Similar Products Used:Kona stinky 2000. (another ace bike). LTS (Lightweight heap of junk that wears bearings after 1 ride)
Bike Setup:As it comes, just a super frame and forks and a load of cheap tat that needs to be wrecked so you can justify the upgrades.
Bottom Line:If you are considering a second user bike, the upgrades should have been done.

It is a superb bike. You just have to be aware that the frame and forks are a million miles ahead of the cheap stuff that comes with it as standard.

You will not hurt this bike! It is a rock. The weight does show, but I have done 80 mile xc rides on it so there...

Purchased At:Kona web site
Strengths:Well built, strong stock parts, option of Hayes hydraulic brakes
Weaknesses:wheel sets are a little weak in comparison to the rest of the set up
Similar Products Used:cheaper Konas, KHS hardtails
Bike Setup:stock, changed rear derailleur to SRAM 9.0 and swithched to SRAM 7.0 gripshifts, upgrading to 9 speed XT casette
Bottom Line:If you want to have a good, very strong built bike, and don't have too much money to spend this is your choice. This model is ready to stand almost anything and is not too hard on your wallet, coonsidering other brands. I'm pretty heavy (120 kg) and the stock rear wheelset with Deore hub and Sun DitchWitch rim was loosing spokes after almost each ride. I upgraded to DT Spokes and the problem disappeared. Think I will get a new rear wheel with Mavic d321 rim, DT Alpine spokes and probably XT hub for 36 holes and it will be more than enough for me. The bike is a bit heavy but with my weight its not a big deal. :) It is comfortable enough for short trips in and out of the city as well.
I aslo liked the fact that I could buy it on manufacturer's site.

Purchased At:Built myself
Strengths:Head tube reinforcement, box-section frame, chainstays (jesus!), linkage, bomb proof design...
Weaknesses:Derailleur hanger made of butter (helps protect damage to der. I guess)
Similar Products Used:Kona Stab, asst. Cheeta, Giant AC-1, FSR Elite, (dare I say it?)GSR mach 9 with 14 inches in rear...
Bike Setup:Hope big 'uns laced to Mavic d-321 with a three inch gazz in the front and 2.6 in the rear. Hope 200mm dh-4 in front, hayes 6 inch in back. Hanebrink pimped out G-7, Fox vanilla r, mountainspeed/eibach blue 700 lb spring. Kona dh stem, icon diesel bars, kona pseudopod glow in the dark grips. Hussefelt two ring bash guard setup, xt...that's about it...
Bottom Line:I bought this frame and built it in a day. Within a week, I was busting a 12 foot drop to not that steep pavement. Well, I busted it twice, then I woke up in the hospital four hours later...Concussion, seven stiches on left side of face from arnettes...
Then I was dropping a four foot wall and my rear der got caught in my back wheel...ripped the hanger clean through, jacked up my xt der, two spokes pulled, so now it's a singlespeed while I wait on some parts. I initially converted it to a single speed out of comedic boredom. I figured the chain would stretch and prevent travel. Not so. I took off my 700 pound spring and put on the stock 600, not sure which I like better, but the lower pivot was set on the linear point(forward), so I switched it to progressive (rearward). Much better. Here's how much I love how this bike feels...
I ride my broken Stinky to work (12 miles one way through mountain passes) rather than my lightweight hardtail that works well, and I used to love. It takes me about 38 minutes to ride home on my hardtail, and about an hour and 15 on my kona, but I still do it. Why? I don't know, it's just more fun. Overall, quite the ride. Seriously. I'd give it twenty flaming chili's if I could.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:hibike
Strengths:strong, durable frame
4-bar-linkage system
very plush (Marzocchi/Fox work perfectly)
best buy
Weaknesses:saddle quick release (see down below why)
bent chainring
no stainless chain
Bike Setup:stock, replaced Avids with Magura Julie
Bottom Line:I've been riding my Stinky for nearly 1 year now and I just love this bike. It's a lot of fun to ride with, especially downhill, but you still can get uphill.
The frame is a dream and can take lots of abuse (I crashed a couple of times, but I got hurt more than my Stinky). The Marzocchi Z5 flexes a little, but shouldn't be too much of a problem in most cases. The Fox Vanilla R is great. The Tiogas are great on dirt - lots of traction - on the other hand they suck in mud. The chainrings are not the strongest as I had to bend some of them back into the position. Front/Rear derailleur, shifters, sram cassette work well.
The rims are good too. No stainless chain - that sucks when you ride through water and rain a lot.I would recommend buying some serious DH/FR disc brakes (Hope, Hayes, Magura, etc.) so you can take this bike to its limit. I'm currently using Magura Julies because I didn't have the cash to buy better disc brakes. They are good for CC and touring, but not aggressive enough for FR, IMO.
The only real annoying thing is the problem with the saddle quick release. My Stinky is size M (17") and whenever I bottom out my rear shock the linkage smacks into the saddle quick release. Not using a quick release would solve the problem, but only Cross Country people would dare to ride without one. Turning the the QR about 170° (so the lever points at the rear wheel)and shortening the lever helped to minimize the problem, but it's not perfect.

Overall I would buy this bike again and again and again. It's the best bike you can get for the money. It's perfect for FR, some DH and jumping.

Bottom Line:This bikes is awesome on downhills, jumps, etc. It's easy to trow around.
The fork crown bent the third time I used the bike for no reason at all. Got it replaced on warranty, but I had to wait over two weeks for the company to change it, unaceptable for a brand new bike.
Appart for that the bike rides great. It handles well in almost all situations. I don't like the Tioga Factory DH tires that come with the bike. In straight line there good but when it come time for cornering and riding on flat rocks, they suck.

Strengths:Increadible suspension, front and back. Beefy stem! Beefy everything!! (almost)
Weaknesses:SEAT POST!! The stupid seat bolt keeps bending when I am riding. I've broken two and bent three! It's rediculous. Definitely a design flaw!!
Im hesitant to say this, but I was fairly un-impressed with the TruVativ Hussefelt crank. I was on a ride and I sort of skid my back tire off the trail and I bumped the crank on a stump. I figured it was nothing, but then I tried to pedal and the chainrings/crank had completely bent in!! What it up with that?!?! Unfourtunately, that wasn't covered under TruVativ's warranty, but they were nice enough to sell me a whole right side crank+three chainrings for $50.

Bike Setup:Factory so far until I get enough money to buy some Hayes disc brakes and a bash guard! Maybe some RaceFace cranks too.
Bottom Line:Overall, this bike rules!! It's an awesome bike for the money. I'm not really a weekend rider only, I ride during the week too. And I'm not sure what the "warrior" part means. I do lots of trials and drops as well as lots of trail riding. The Stinky has been absolutely amazing besides the crank and seatpost incidents. I would reccomend it to anyone looking to raise their level of riding to the next dimension.

Bottom Line:This is a follow up report from my first post a month or so ago, this bike rocks. This is THE bike for those of us who want to have a really good time out in the woods. I've owned a lot of bikes and this is by far my favorite ever. I've made a few changes in the past month to make ths thing more my size, and also to my liking, but stock this was a great ride. With the addition of my smaller wheel preference, it is now like a big BMX bike with gears and suspension. looking for something to take to the trails for some jumping? This may be the bike for you. I weigh in at around 210 pounds and I'm five foot eight, this thing takes everything I can put it through. I have a BMX background and this bike feels much more stable at speed, allowing me to go faster and clear bigger gaps with ease. Also, it makes me more confident in larger drops and just a faster rider all around. If you are in the market for a new Dual bike, or just like to get the most out of your riding, this may very well be the bike for you. Give it a try, you won't be let down!!!

Strengths:Frame, Rectangle to round tubing, fork, frame, brakes (for v's), shock, frame, suspension design, isis, frame, disc ready, FRAME. This bike is very well balanced.
Weaknesses:Tires, seatpost.
Similar Products Used:Big Hit pro, Heckler, Roast
Bike Setup:It's 3 days old except I switched the pedals at the shop for a set with sealed bearings and replacable pins. I changes out the tires after 1 ride for a set of Ritchey Alfa Bite mondos (2.35 inch)
Bottom Line:This bike rocks!!!! I've had it for three days so far so my opinion will be updated, but so far so good. Kona did an excellent job specking a disk ready monster like this for so little.

Obviously the frame is the main highlight, but the cranks are burly, the geometry is dialed, the wheels seem stiff for their price level, everything fits together very well. I've done a few drops with the bike and it shines, soaks it up very well, the fox's rebound damping allows wide adjustment.

After I got the bike I took it out for a few cross country/ adventure rides and it was awesome! Much more versatile than I had imagined, it even spins the road well (no need to drive to the trail head). The suspension has negigable bob if you spin smooth circles.

Anything bad? I think the tires lick !@#^^% they seek sketchy at speed and fill up with mud, I'll give them another try in a few weeks but I recommend you switch them. Also I bent the bolt which secures the seat on the post, it's small, weak, and hard to replace. Kona had to dave money somewhere to get a bike this awesome out the door at this price so don't hold it against them.

Bottom line, if you want to go bigger this bike won't hold you back, buy one. I'll post another review once I've actually used the bike for its intended purpose. If it's half as good at what its supposed to do as what it isn't, you'll be blown away.

Weaknesses:Rear tire rubs on cable guide then you approach the 4" mark on travel. My break levers had break fluid spilt on them and now look crappy, front caliper came with a leak. Deraileur hoits the frame on big hits, use floded piece of tube to cusion it.

Strengths:Bombproof, smooth 5" suspension travel, Hayes disks (option), well spec'd components, Marzocchi fork.
Weaknesses:I'm still trying to find one. Oh, here's one... The Truvative chainrings (Big & middle) are easy to bend. I've bent them both already. The big one is my fault for bashing it on logs, but the middle has bent also. The material seems a bit soft?
Similar Products Used:None. Just various hardtails over the last 10 yrs.
Bike Setup:Stock. Don't waste your time playing around with components. I went with the Hayes disk brake option (recommended).
Bottom Line:This bike just plain rips. Compared to my X-C racing hardtail, the confidence it inspires is amazing. The 5 big inches of travel suck up everything. Big drops and steep chutes are easy with this thing. With smooth pedalling going uphill is not a problem (suspension isn't affected much by pedalling forces). The weight is what a bike this durable and fun to ride should be. Don't get caught up in the lightweight hype when considering a bike like this. This bike is perfect for a rider who wants something durable and FUN to go out and push the limits on, without needing to do maintenance after every ride. The Hayes are powerful and super easy to modulate. You will not be dissapointed. Well worth the wrath I endured from my girlfriend, for not spending the money on more "necessary" items!! I've never done a product review before but I felt the need to spread the love on this one.

After close to 3 months of damn abusive riding this bike is still rocking as hard as the day i got it. Keep in mind by abuse i don't mean trashing and throwing down, but instead landing large dirt jumps, 6 foot drops from flat concrete to a flat concrete landing, etc... I've also had the opportunity for some trail riding. Of course its a bit heavy, but weighing in at 35 pounds (with plenty of room to save weith with sacrificed component strength) it handles excelently, it is possible to power up a hill, and it decends smoother than anything. Eventhough this bike is expensive i'm upping the value rating to a full 5 flames because it just kicks so much ass.
P.S. i was out on my Stinky today and somehow ended up racing some kid down a hill (that was none to steep). He was on an ATV and i kicked his ass with the help of a plush 5 inches provided by my sick ride.

Efficient climber for a freeride bike yet rear triangle is very solid for drops and cornering. Straight seat tube is this only way to go if you're going to be doing any climbing. So far very low maintenance and overall fun bike. Get it if you want to get on with having fun on technical trails and don't like to tinker with your bike before each ride. Strengths:Burly, plush, confidence inspiring, nice clean welds, super efficient suspension, comfortable cockpit, good cable routing; redesigned and beefier for 2001: chainstays and yoke, seatpost QR, rocker arm/seatpost pivot (that really is a swell gusset) and rocker arms; well balanced on the ground or in the air...
Weaknesses:Tioga Factory DH 2.3 tires. Poopy. Really poopy.

Bottom Line:This is a really good bike. Some people find the head angle a bit steep for the steeps, but I kinda like it; nice fast steering for really technical riding, but slack enough that it always feels smooth and controlled at speed or down the chutes. The rear end is great: the suspension feels big--Kona isn't lying when they say it is "5 BIG inches". I haven't felt it bottom out harshly doing drops onto flat concrete. The fork is nicely matched and balanced with the rear end, but blows through its travel a bit quicker. I like the lockout--I don't however, like the lockout toggle. It's a bit flimsy and I am anticipating having to replace it this season... It also gets loose easily, but you got to keep an eye on it. The bike is a bit on the heavy side, but that is part and parcel of the whole "freeride" thing--it still pedals and climbs great. All in all, the bike is great and I would recommend it to anyone. I think the MRSP on the Primo is a bit high, but if you can get it at a nice 'bro deal', then I would definitely do it (and I did).

Weaknesses:Could have better drivetrain components. I mean it comes with a Deore rear and an LX in front. Chain rub up front even in what should normally be useable gear combinations (big/small or small/big) and throws the chain off of the granny gear occasionally but it might come out with some tweaking. A little slow handling for XC type stuff but then again it's a freeride bike.

I don't think you'll find a beefier freeride bike anywhere in this price range and component selection. Coil and Oil shocks front and rear make this a plush ride. I'm a beginner off-roader and wanted a bike that would give me confidence and take the abuse my lack of skills might force upon it. Don't worry about the weight, you really do not feel it on the trails. The original Fox Vanilla R developed a klunk mid-stroke but Kona sent me new one and I was on the road again in 5 days. This bike is Very similar to the Santa Cruz Bullit (which I have also seen broken) and should be used by the same type of rider. This bike feels good on drops up to 10 feet and performs well under all freeride and downhill conditions. This bike also a fairly good drivetrain so you can peddle the thing up the hills to get to those "secret" freeride trails. Similar Products Used:I have a 1998 kona king kihuna ti bike and I just sold a 2000 specialized big hit with the x-verts and all ( piece of garbage ).
Bike Setup:2001 kona stinky ( green ) with a 2000 JR.T and a pair of hayes disc brakes
Bottom Line:The way I've got this bike dialed is perfect for the whole north shore/DH scene it's super durable with amazing suspension and it climbs alright. I ride this bike on full out dh runs and it's awesome and a lot the north shore trails can't dish out enough for this bike. It has a realy stable and nice ride very nice handling. I'd recomend this bike to anyone wanting freeride and ride some DH.

Weaknesses:weight except it still climbs incredibly well
Similar Products Used:Norco Vps Buzz
Bike Setup:stock, except I opted for the V-brakes over the disks
Bottom Line:This is a great bike. I just purchased it yesterday and already my skills are improving!! I can do a 8 foot drop now with confidence when before I could only do a 4 foot drop with confidence on my hardtail. I recommend you opt for the V-brakes which work incredibly well unless you want to shell out the extra $600, or you're husky and need to stop faster than the V-brakes will allow.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Good components (which you'd expect for the price) , nice welds, great suspension action. Great traction uphill, great tracking downhill. Very comfortable. Very little suspension bob.
Weaknesses:When changing down rapidly to the little ring on the front, the chain has a tendancy to follow the ring up past the chain stay. The beefiness of the chain stay makes it hard to extract the chain and a loss of paint is the result (yes my chain is clean).
Similar Products Used:Specialised FSR Elite
Bike Setup:Stock Stinky Primo setup, but with 2001 Super T forks and a Selle Italia seat.
Bottom Line:This bike cost me a small fortune but it was worth it. Talk about confidence inspiring, just point it downhill and have a ball.
As far as uphill goes it has excellent traction. I have ridden this bike on a cross country course where the first 7kms (that's 4 miles to you) are uphill, you have to stop every now and then but you don't have to start walking. My last bike was a Giant MCM Team carbon fibre and I had to stop every now and then on that bike too.
I have to agree with the other reviewer who bagged the Marzocchi QR20plus system. When you need to use a hex key to remove 2 bolts, then undo a skewer...well that's not really quick release is it. We'd be better off with a straight 20mm bolt through, then at lest we could buy a decent hub.

Weaknesses:I`VE OWNED THE BIKE FOR 5 WEEKS AND BROKE THE FRAME ALREADY. THE GUSSET PLATE ON THE LOWER SHOCK MOUNT ON THE NON-DRIVE SIDE BEGAN TO CRACK, BUT NOT AT THE WELD. I CALLED KONA RIGHT AWAY . THEY THINK THE PLATE WAS`NT FITTED IN THE JIG RIGHT WHEN IT WAS WELDED, AND STRESSED THE PLATE WHEN IT WAS BOLTED TO THE SHOCK. Strengths:Paint job, burly, stable, squishy

Similar Products Used:None really, ecxept for some freeriding hard tails
Bike Setup:stock, with DK bmx plat, red oury grips, ritchy Z-max 2.35's
Bottom Line:This bike rocks! Buy one now. The rear end is plush, but the z-3 on the front isn't all that great. I've had problems dialing it in. It also seems to flex a little. I put Ex-heavy springs in it and still bottom it out quite regularly. I weigh about 190, and am 6'5", so I m going to upgrade to a MX-6 or Super T when the funds allow. But you can do sweet X-ups with it though. Over all this bike kicks my butt. Although I tried to ride it up a steep road in the Portland west hills, and my lungs almost started to bleed, but going down was fricken great. The frame takes high drops to flat landings great. I just put on the ritchey's and they work pretty well for urban stuff. Not quite as big as the tioga's, but they roll and feel better. Plus it saved almost a pound! God I'm turning into a cross-country rider. I have yet to do any serious dirt jumping, but I've yet to bottom it out on 5'+ drops. Word of advice, bruised juevos suck. Lower your seat when doing drops, whether it be roling or wheelie.

Also if you want to get into down hilling or just want more travel, there's a company in the UK called BETD that makes a replacement part that is adjustable from 5.5 to 6.5 inches in the back. Their website www.betd.co.uk They're super cool and it only costs about $150 I think, its marked in pounds so Im not to sure. But it uses the same berings, and shock and stuff

Bottom line, buy this bike you won't regret it. Unless your some leg shavin, frame polishin, cross country ridin gram counter.

it sucks up anything u throw at it on a downhill, and can

Ready to rock out of the box. Don't have to change a thing except a few minor parts.
Weaknesses:I only want to ride one bike now...
umm, I bent the seatpost. Must have landed wrong at some point but don't know when. Only noticed when I went to drop the seat to the bottom(still went down though, just a little tight)
The Race Face Prodigy Cranks are a little weak. I don't expect them to stay red for long. Tweaked the middle ring like that other reviewer did.
Similar Products Used:Nothing compares to this.
My 'race' bike is a custom built Reynolds 853 jobby that weighs about 12 or 13lbs less than the stinky. 'course it only has 3 inches of front travel.
Bike Setup:All stock. Nothing needed to be changed.
This review is for the stinky Dee-Lux.
Changed the pedals for the 646's (DX). Wanted more of a platform. Nice change compared to the 737's. ha ha. Changed chain to a Sachs and upgraded the cassette to XT. Chucked the big ring in the trash and put a rock ring on. Ok, I changed more than a "few" things but it pretty much ready to roll out of the box...
Bottom Line:This is a workhorse of a bike. You can bang nails with it all day long and it keeps coming back for more. Great climber. Awesome geometry. It just tracks so true I can hit anything and it just keeps rolling on. I got a size small (15") and the fit is perfect. If you aren't sure what size to get, err on the side of too small rather than too large.
For 'freeriding' this is an amazing bike. From the wheel selection (mavic f519's) to the fork/shock combo and the balance between front and rear wheel travel you couldn't find a better bike. Well, maybe you could, but I like this one. Bottom line: if you want something you can stop, drop and roll with, this is the bike. I can't wait until I get up the nerve to do something more than a 6 foot drop. I think thats the biggest benefit of this ride, it has more potential than the average rider buying it. In the past people have been limited by their hardware, like "what if my frame breaks" or "what if my wheel folds in half". Well, no more. Now its all down to the pilot.
Ohh, can people please stop pissing and moaning about how much it weighs. It weighs 36lbs. Yes, thats a lot compared to your girly XC Race bike. Most bikes in the 5+5 category do.
Saying that the weight of this bike is a "weakness" or a negative is like saying a Ferrari isn't a good car because it gets poor gas mileage. Well duh!

Strengths:Strong, good geometry for DH but still OK for climbing, lots of plush travel, handling is very good in all situations. The seat post problem from the 99 model has been fixed. Hayes brakes are very good. Actually looks like a bike (an awesome bike) and not a prototype NASA spacecraft like some bikes do these days.
Weaknesses:Heavy (but not that heavy really), I've had problems with the middle chain ring bending out of shape in several places, but the bike shop is replacing it no charge. Also front derailleur probs, but I think they're related to the chain ring being stuffed. Annoying fake quick release on the Z3s.
Similar Products Used:Giant ATX-990, Kona Stab, Norco VPS1
Bike Setup:stock except for platform pedals
Bottom Line:This is a review for the Stinky Delux, not the Stinky.
The bike is awesome. It handles amazingly DH, still climbs excellently apart from the weight (which isnt too bad considering what its like DH). At the moment the rear shock is a bit stiff (i'm a very light rider), but a softer spring should make the travel even more plush. The brakes are awesome...rolling endos have become too easy.
This bike is the best bike I've ever ridden (or heard of) for general hardcore trail-riding. You could easily use it for DH racing if you want a bike that you can still take out on wilderness missions occasionally. The bike is pricey and I was pretty worried the day I bought it...but since then I havent regretted (or even thought about) the price. It seems super strong (you'd have to do something pretty serious to break it)...I've only had it for 2 months but I'll submit another review on durability once i get everything tweaked just the way I like it.
Other minor advantages include the frame is an easy shape to fit on bike racks on cars unlike many Y-frames and its also fairly adjustable. One thing thing that pisses me off is the supposed quick release on the Z3 forks....its not quick release at all, in fact I've seen many non-quick release designs that are in fact much quicker than this one. It has a quick release axle which is fine, but it also has these annoying dropout brackets underneath which you not only need an allen-key for, but they are really bloody hard to get to.
This is only a minor problem though and overall this bike is very, very good.
