Favorite Trail:allmountain/trailriding
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:off a freind
Strengths:some exelent stock parts such as the really burly wheels and the decent transmition components for instance the bashgaurd and chain guide are quality peices of kit .The original forks are actually really good aswell.
Weaknesses:the seatpost is a little short and the origignal brakes aren't the best.
Similar Products Used:specialized hardrock pro 2006
Bike Setup:rock shox psyslo race 2001 forks ,hope mono mini front disks apart from these items it's all the original spec.
Bottom Line:this is a briliant bike that is exelent to ride in almost every dicipline of mountain biking from jump to trail riding but I certinaitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is wanting a light xc bike but for the jumping and trail riding that I use it for it's fantastic.

Favorite Trail:street n dj riding
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Purchased At:(demo)2 of em a xs and a large (13" and 17")
Strengths:ummmm......it comes with all the components u need to ride a bike...
Weaknesses:frame has awful geometry, it's heavy and it looks ugly. and it's a kona..
Similar Products Used:gt ruckus trail, broady miscrent, giant stp (14" annd 15"), santacruz jackel, kona cowan, specialized p2...
Bike Setup:Giant stp, manitou travis, racecface evolve dh xtype, avid bb7, hookworms, singletracks, fireeye seat, diablolus stem, intense grips, dm ss kit with dmr sts tensioner etc.
Bottom Line:dont bbuy a kona. they have good rep and bad rep. the good rep comes from teh people who bought em without trying anything else (inexperennced buyers) and the bad rep comes from any bike store that isnt stuck dealing with kona and any body else whos tryed a kona and then tried another companies "competition" for the same kona model. Aka stuff compared to rockey mountain flow. stuff compared to banshee scratch, flow compared to norco 4hun etc.

Favorite Trail:Meadowlily Bike Park (unauthorized if you know what I mean)
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $680.00

Strengths:This bike is extremely strong and all the stock parts are great.
Weaknesses:The rims warp a bit to easy.
Similar Products Used:2002 Miele 251
Bike Setup:Stock except for new avid speed dial 5 brake levers.
Bottom Line:This bike is overall an excellent buy, and since I only paid $680 CAD I think I got a pretty good deal. The only things I'm going to change (these really arn't needed I just want to make it better) is the brakes which I'm chaging to Hayes hydros, and the fork, which I'd like to upgrade to a DJ3.

Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:halfords
Strengths:great bike for throwing around. will take a lot of abuse. most of the stock components are good enough. the truvativ hussefelt isis crank is bombproof.
Weaknesses:sun ditchwitch rims are absolute crap. they spend more time in the truing stand than on the bike. the shimano mechanical brakes are crap as well. cracked the lowers of the EXRs in a crash which involved a road with loose gravel, a car pulling out of a driveway and a Hope M4... (you can probably guess what happened. it put me out of action for 4 weeks. i had a cast on my leg and my wrist. luckily i wasn't too far away from home and i managed to crawl back dragging the bike behind me!)
Similar Products Used:only dirt jumper ive had.
Bike Setup:kona stuff '03, '04 marzocchi DJ3's(bombproof),mavic 721's on hope xc,hope M4 front, mono mini rear, full XT (apart from rear mech-LX)club roost stem and grips, DMR V8's and DMR elite saddle
Bottom Line:good bike to buy if you want a tough bike but you are still planning to upgrade (not really up to seriously heavy abuse stock), but still an excellent bike stock, rides very nicely, as do all konas, apart from the things mentioned above. i am 6'2" and 16 stone and therefore component durability is an issue on any bike that i ride. i have eventually found a pretty much perfect setup for my stuff. it is absolutely, bar none, the toughest little b*tch goin!

Date Reviewed: October 1, 2004
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Frame geometry and strenght. I rode my Stuff for 2 years in the Whistler Bike Park with no major problems at all. It stood up to lots of abuse.
Weaknesses:Stock rims are trash, and the brakes are the worst I have ever ridden. They need constant adjusting and always felt mushy. I eventually upgraded the front to a deore hydro and that has made a HUGE difference. The saddle is the most uncomfortable thing I have ever sat on :( Oh and the EXR fork isn't really gold either.
Similar Products Used:A bunch of different frames... and I also own a Norco Six.
Bike Setup:03 Stuff with Mavic 721 rear rim hand laced to a deore hub. Front wheel set is a machine built Single Track laced to a deore hub. Deore hydro front brake. Intense FRO DH 2.35 tires. Most everything else stock.
Bottom Line:It's a good frame. The stock components could have been a little better. I bought it and decided to ride it stock and replace stuff as it broke. It's worked out rather well so far. The 05 stuff has a better fork, better brakes, more comfortable saddle so the only thing that I would still like to see upgraded is the rims. Still a great little bike. Especially for the price. Good all round. I took mine down hill in the bike park, on some xc rides, used it to commute to work, and dirt jumping. I love mine.

Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:bikekraft
Strengths:the frame is top quality, no problems what so ever, rims arent bad with a true once and a while, marzocchi fork, although lacking travel makes up for it in longevity, stem and handel bars are great as well
Weaknesses:stock brakes, mine didnt come with disck, an i upgraded to avid mechanical, no problems noe. I also stipped out the crank ( pedal just fell out ) after a run in with a tree( my legs ok though ) need to upgrade deraluirs!! plus the pedals are shot.
Similar Products Used:none, dont need amything else
Bike Setup:bike hase new seat post and seat ( snapped the stocker ) LX cranks ( now a little bent due to a couple run ins with a nine stair) avid mechanical disc, and will soon have a marzocchi Jr. T, and a neew set of wheels.
Bottom Line:this bike has out lasted my friends raliegh ( had to have the frame replaced twice) a daimondback hardtail, and is now proving itself over a trek liquid 25, this bike is tough, an although it needs some upgrades, the frame is indestructable, ive had this bike for 2 years, and its still workin great!!!
if you want a bike thats strong, can be used as a dirt jump bike, trail bike, or anything in between this bike is for u, not for cross country!!

Weaknesses:rims i broke the first set on the bike, the forks i cracked the lowers, but that all there really not a weakness just the rims warp easy and the fork had alot of flex,

Strengths:beefy all round and a good bike for general bashing around. it will take one hell of a beating before any of the components give up.
Weaknesses:brakes (changed for hope m4 on front and magura julie on rear. (you can read my review on the hope m4 as well on this site)
Similar Products Used:giant atx 860
Bike Setup:standard rims, handle bars, stem and standard (but very good) truvativ hussefelt isis crank, marzochi EXR forks. cane creek headset, hope and magura brakes (front and rear respectively), dmr dirt jumping saddle and V8 pedals and the all important pimp ass dice valve caps!
Bottom Line:you get a lot of bike for your money, but a few weaknesses spoil it, but these can be sorted out with a few upgrades as mentioned above (brakes being the most essential upgrade, as the ones that come with it are CRAP!!!) my Stuff is worth about £1300, but you could (and should!) get a basic new one for as little as £600 (what i paid for mine originally). The stuff is a great bike for throwing around the streets and for showing off at your local jump spot! The new '04 model has the improved dirt jumper forks, rather than the EXR's on the'03, but i would recomend picking up an '03 model and kitting it up, rather than spending extra mobey for not a lot more.

Strengths:Solid cranks and pedals, frames good, but not as strong as the roast, the roast has got a way better chainstay, but if u ride street like me its good, great handle bar and stem, rims are good
Weaknesses:Brakes, the brakes are good for a month then they are really crappy, the derailers good but i broke it a few times, so im on an XT, the shock is not a good shock for dirtjumping and street riding its really week in the stanctions, i found a nice crak in em. but majorly the brakes arnt very good
Bottom Line:Its an awesome bike overall, like anybike parts break so at all depand on wut u like to ride, i street ride so the brakes and fork is not the best for me but like anything u can always update, and u get alot for ur buck!

Price Paid: $800.00
Strengths:I actually just purchased the 2004 stuff. The bike rocks, great marzocchi forks, solid frame(exact same as the roast), nice rims, and meaty tires. The bike is a great bang for the $. If you're looking at the roast, it isn't worth the extra $400-$500 over the stuff. the roast is a nice bike, but to costly for a hardtail.
Weaknesses:Bike is a bit heavy, but you have to expect that with a meaty frame. At least change the front brake to Hayes Hydrolaulic.
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain Flow.
Bike Setup:Go to konaworld.com and check out any setup you want.
Bottom Line:I live in Canada so the bike actually cost me $1149 Cdn. The bike is a great value, if you built the same bike up part for part would cost over $2000 Cdn. The Roast is $700 more than the stuff and is not worth the extra $. DJ3 and the drop off are almost the same shock, Hayes HFX9 and shimano mechanicals is less than $50 price diff. and a deore LX drivetrain isn't as costly as you might think. Those are the only diff. between the 2 bikes the forks, brakes, and front and rear derailluers. Either bike is great, it's just how much you have to spend.

Planet X Seat,
Nokian 2.3' Tyres
Bottom Line:This bike is exelent for street riding, especially large drop offs, like stairs and stuff, I managed to jump 11 steps on it, which was about a 7' drop, and the forks landed right at the bottom and it soaked it up completely. The front is too heavy for my liking though, I seem to be always nose diving it. For £800 I would have expected it to be alot lighter.

The frame is indestructable. I downhilled it all summer and i am a big guy. add better brakes and it is a sure thing)

Bottom Line:Bottom line - Get the bike - upgrade to deores right away. They are cheaper than Hayes and have not given me a problem. Not to mention replacement parts are alomost half the cost of Hayes. I had to re submitt a review, cause i was a bit harsh on Kona.

Strengths:Very strong frame, great colour, nice handling and super grippy tires. Ace brakes.
Weaknesses:Quite heavy
Similar Products Used:The only other bike i've had was a raleigh 'max' cromoloy, and that really was a complete pile of $&%* !
Bike Setup:All stock so far but upgrades planned
Bottom Line:So far i've found this bike to be everything i was expecting it to be. Super strong, brilliant handling and with very responsive brakes and gears. The short frame makes it great for wheelies, manuals and jumping (the jobs i bought it for)and the components seem to be able to take it. The forks are good too, giving just enough to soften hard landings yet resistant enough for smooth street riding. Kona call it an 'out of bounds' hardtail, and that seems perfectly chosen, because this is a real go-anywhere-do-anything bike. So far it's been used for general riding, dirt and urban jumping and a little downhill and has survived them all without a single scratch (literally, there isn't a mark on it!) Potentially weak gears are soon to be replaced with shimano xtr's though, as will the stem as some b**tard at the shop swopped the original Tioga cube for a crappy £15 Azonic that makes handling not as good as it should be. Other than that a great bike that is such a massive improvement from my old bike that i'm still reeling from the shock of it! I'll definately go with Kona in the future. Best £600 i ever spent!

Strengths:Feeling strong still but after a bit of time it gets gimpy. The frame is ace and so is the bar and headset setup. The Hussefelt cranks are also really tough
Weaknesses:Where to start. The pedals and brakes are a BIG problem. The pedals are fake for starters and therefore unservicable, if you want real jacksh@#$ pedals buy the Roast. After avout 3 months my right pedal is grinding and clankin to no end. The brakes are dodgy as and as soon as they get wet, stop working completly, and when I say Ccompletely i mean you cant stop for anything. Also the seat is kinda hard if you land on it.

Bottom Line:This bike is great, its a bit heavy for trials and dirt and not stocky enough for hard downhill. It's just right for all genres of biking if your a bit like me and into everything MTB, in short it rides forwards, is jumpable can take hard hits and can bounce around ok. Just save more then you need to buy is so you can replace the pedals and discs the same day. Good Value but its got some issues.

MY bike before this was a GT Backwoods, which is more of a XC bike eventhough i had a small frame...it was sweet but unfortunately got stolen. this was a replacement bike, and i'm very happy with it. not doing anything crazy yet. but little 3~4 footers feel like riding of a curb. its also alot easier to manual and wheely, i guess due to shorter chainstays. at first this bike felt sort of heavy at very first, but i got used to it 10 mins into my ride. once this thing gets goin, it feels like its moving with force. this bike is a solid tank and will be even better with some DJ3 and possibly better breaks. i'm plannin on going up to 5-6 footers in the next few weeks, and i feel tottaly confindent about this bike. 825$ wekk spetn. will most deffinately invest another $400 in the next few months, but overall its dope.

Strengths:tough frame and fork, cranks hold up well under most thrashings.
Weaknesses:the seat is too hard, the gearing wont last long under strain and the grips are slippery. The brakes also dont have the stop you if you need it. Probably should be upped in price and stocked with a set of hydraulics. The wheels wont last long on big drops though
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:stock so far
Bottom Line:This bike is hell good for the price and is built to last. Not the bike however for someone who rides extra hard. The bike has so far held up well and is good to ride in the city or out bush. Its a top notch effort. Particularly good price.

Weaknesses:The Shimano Mech brakes make a lot of noise when you brake
Similar Products Used:Kona Roast, Oryx Dueler 66, Norco One25 and Rampage

Bottom Line:A great bike. I appreciate every aspect of it except for the mech but that can easily be modified. If you buy this bike you won't regret it, you'll improve after every session of riding with this bike. An advice if you want to buy this bike your riding style should be dirt jumping and street riding. If not you might find this bike hard to ride for any other type of riding. Weaknesses:Brakes...They are the worst i have ever used. Had i known i would have never bought the bike. Mechanical brakes need to be adjusted every 2 runs. After 3 weeks i had to repalce the pads. I also broke both brake levers, on very small bails. Great bike, horrible brakes,

Date Reviewed: March 14, 2003
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Strengths:Have you seen the front end of this bike, beasty ass stem and bars, forks arn't the best but i've had no problems at all with them. The crank set rocks, strong as hell. Pedals are giant and smooth, totally indestructable. The drive-train works as well as any i've tried with maintainance, and the tires stuck to anything at any angle even being only 2.1.
Weaknesses:Ahh, rims. I flat spotted my rims 2 and a half times in the first month. They need retensioning after everyride, this isn't just because of the flat spots, as the fronts the same and it ain't flat spotted. I've ridden 20 doller rims stiffer than these. The hubs are abit iffy, but alright.
Similar Products Used:Merida Matts, KHS Alite, Kona Roast
Bike Setup:Totally stock
Bottom Line:Beats anything else i've ridden in this price range hands down. This bike has been through hell, and has come out rolling, which is more than i can say for my old bike, no comment. The rims are pretty weak, but for a beginer they'll be just fine. It is pretty heavy but some how you don't notice it all that much. I use the EXR for downhill and drops, like 15 foot drops and i still haven't had so much as a creak. I can't really find fault with this bike at all. Why buy anything else, it out performs everything else in the price range by a mile. Oh yeah, before i got my bike i saw a picture of some guy dropping his stuff of a roof, then i though yeah my ass, on a hardtail, what a tool. But now i got no doubt thats what this bike built to do, and will do it well.

Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:Bicycleworks
Strengths:Good Pricing (In Canada), Stong frame, Kona puts good strong parts where they are needed and cuts corners where they can to keep prices down, slight geometry changes from 2002.
Weaknesses:I've never been overly impressed with the Sun Ditchwitch rims, but they do get the job done. No rim brake bosses on the frame it you wanted to run v-brakes. To make it a bit cheaper, the Stuff does have a different frame from the Roast.
Similar Products Used:'01 Kona Stinky Primo

'00 Kona Stinky
'99 Kona Chute
Bike Setup:Stock except for Hayes mechanical discs (basically the same as the Shimano M475's), and Mavic D521/F519 rims on XT disc hubs.
Bottom Line:So the bike comes with an Shimano Alivio drivetrain, but it does work just as well as deore or LX. Luckly you can just look at it that if it breaks it isn' too expensive to fix. The Marzocchi EXR again isn't the best fork out there but for an entry level marzocchi fork it works great, and the internals are so simple just about any maintance that needs to be done can be done by just about any body. The 4" of travel that the EXR has is really all that most people use. (also for people's notes the out of bounds hardtails are not designed for anything over a 5" Dual crown fork)

The frame differences from the Roast and the Stuff is in the chainstays which isn't machined and retangular like the roast. So if you are going to beat the crap out of the bike maybe think of getting the roast, but for the average rider the stuff will do just fine.

Kona also has very good pricing (atleast in Canada) on thier freeride hardtails in comparison to some other companies. Like Rock Mountain is a good $400 more, in which you may get some slightly better parts but it isn't really worth the $400. This can also be attributed to the frame being made overseas which these days isn't really a bad thing.

Kona has also changed the geometries ever so slightly for 2003. The change has been in the seat tube length. This allows for a frame to have more standover height and appeals to the dirt jumpers, but they have kept all the other geometries the same so that while a medium may look like a small frame, it still rides like the old 17" mediums of years past.

All in all the bike is a great buy for the money. It will work expecially well as an entry level freeride bike for the kid who has managed to save just over a grand CND.

Strengths:very strong bike all-round
Weaknesses:The stock tyres (Tioga factory dh 2.1) are not for this bike and need to be replaced before ANY riding. The bike is a bit on the heavy side but it seems very strong.
Similar Products Used:My old bike was half the weight but it broke!!!
Bike Setup:The cranks (TruVativ hussefelt ISIS) are bloody bulletproof, Sunrims DitchWitch with shimano disc hubs are great and the disc brakes rock!!! (first time disc brake user). the Bomber exr forks are smooth and strong.
Bottom Line:As said before the tyres need to be replaced, something like: Maxxis highrollers 2.7 front 2.5 back. The handle bars are too stiff for a hardtail raplace with say Azonic 1.5 rise. The Avid brake leavers seem a bit long replaced with older style Shimano LX servo-wave leavers, new grips new seat(BMX)new stem(not as long and a bit higher)and you have a kick-arse bike that can go anywhere and do just about everything(bit heavy for hardcore trials)
