$630.00 | | Purchased At: | ebay | | Strengths: | - Sick burly frame, nice geometry, pretty black/dust color. - The cranks are sweet. - For the money the components are great, (including kona components: the bashguard, handlebars, pedals, saddle, stem).
| | Weaknesses: | - Sun ditchwitch rims. I could understand some heavy and durable rims, or ligh and weak rims. This rims are very weak and heavy. - Brakes, no comments. - EXR Fork, but again, for the price is a good deal. | | Similar Products Used: | Norco sasquatch, Canondale Jeckill 6000, Specialized P2, Kona stuff & Kona roast. Many others but not similar at all. | | Bike Setup: | Stock plus: - Hayes 8" Mag brakes - Marzocchi Drop Off 2 - new rims are coming | | Bottom Line: | This is your bike if you like DH, if you ride XC but you dont compete, if you like to jump, if you are a freerider or even if you are a cladesdale. Not really expensive for what you get. With the upgrades (fork and brakes basically) it is the best bike I ever ride. because the nice handling, the pretty look, its climbing capacity and the burly frame it is the best choice. Fork is ok, just some adjustment, cleaning and some manitou grease to turn it more plush. A little bit spongy but not really bad.

$650.00 | | Purchased At: | recyclery | | Strengths: | good frame. pretty frame. very nice frame. stock setup is good for a descent amount of time until you're ready to upgrade components. people say the tektro brakes suck, but I like them for trials, and I've found as long as you give them a little TLC and slap a booster on the back you're set. I wouldn't mind some LXs in place, but the tekkys are fine by me. the levers on the other hand aren't so good. shifters shift, so they're fine. alivio rear der has taken quite a few knocks, and is fine once tuned. bar is in one piece after quite a few concrete crashes, drops, and general goofing around so it's good. pedals good, lost a few pins but still solid. hussefelts good. ditch witches okay by me. stock knobies good, but I plan to get some K-RADS or hookworms. | | Weaknesses: | levers have a nice feel, but aren't the greatest. bar kind of worries me after a few hard crashes, but it's still in one piece. the bike does need some love after a hard street ride, but everything is really solid. I don't like that this type of kona frame's warranty is only for a year though. that stinks. some people don't like the ditch witches, and I think I'm going to replace my beat up ones with rhyno lites or D521s, but they've always been faithful to me with a little truing. | | Similar Products Used: | specialized P2, cove stifee, evil imperial, azonic ds1, on-one gimp. I've only ridden these others like once. they're other riders bikes who chicago freeride. I'd trade my roommates laptop for that evil imperial, but I still love my kona. | | Bike Setup: | azonic dw 2" rise, old school xtr shifter/lever combo, threshold booster, and the seat all the way down to avoid the ol' naughty bits. everything else is still stock. | | Bottom Line: | this thing is solid. it hasn't failed me yet on anything here in the concrete jungle of chicago. I street ride just about everyday and ride on the weekends with the chicagofreeride.com fools (if you're ever in chicago check the website and come ride with us), and the only thing this ride has failed on is nothing... well the chain busted once but that was just the chain. I've done ugly looking (me that is) 7' plus drops to flat, really scarry northshore stuff out in joliet (from what the teamsally.com crew has built), and tons of just stupid falls with this beautiful bike. I am 5'5" and got the extra small frame, which is perfect for trials, urban, dirtjumping, commuting, and stupid falls. would say that the warranty is disappointing, but you'll definately have gotten your moneys worth when you bust this. I've got no beef with the exr. it's a fine starter fork, a little stiff, but if you're into trials it's great, and I feel fine with it after big urban hits. good bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Nimble handling. Strong Frame/Cranks. Nice stiff feel. | | Weaknesses: | Not sure if its a weakness but for some it may be. The bike feels big. Like a shore bike. It doesnt really effect my riding but you should test one out before buying. The fork will work fine for the time being. Upgrade it when it breaks. Personaly I dont think the Alivio stuff is a weakness as I will likely brake it pretty quickly anyway and its cheap to replace. | | Similar Products Used: | P.2 (cockpit to small for my liking) Kona Stuff (same frame different build) | | Bike Setup: | Only upgrade was Avid Mech.Discs And a shorter Kore stem Rest of the bike is stock. | | Bottom Line: | After nearly Killing my full susp. XC ride around town I figured it was time to get a Urban/Jumping hardtail. Didnt want to spend more that 1000$ Canadian. I decided on the Kona Stuff but they didnt have one in my size so I chose the scrap and upgraded to Avid discs. Still came in cheaper than the stuff. Went with a medium to make it more trail friendly (now my XC bike just sits there and collects dust..so maybe I should have grabbed a small :)
The bike feels large like I said earlier however it reacts like a smaller bike. Just something to keep in mind. Urban riding is great on this bike. Bunny hopping/manuals, getting up onto objects feels surprisingly easy. I am 5'11/150 pounds and the bike is perfectly balanced for me. I can track stand with no effort until the cows come home. It also feels great in the air. The Sun ditchwitch rims have held up much, much better than I expected them to. I have been beating it up pretty good and havent noticed any substantial flex as of yet.
Bottom line is this is a great bike for the price if your just getting into freeride/urban. Begginers are harder on thier rides and this will take the punishment until its time to upgrade as your skills improve. I was looking at some Norcos in the same price range but the parts spec. was no where near as good. I started out looking for a Jumping/Urban specific bike and ended up with a great all around hardtail. However if you are looking for a specific trials/Urban/jumper somthing like the p2 or Norco 125 may suit you better. I will likely buy a street specific frame next year and swap the parts over but for now im just getting back into street riding and Im lacking a little finesse so this is the perfect beater to get my skills up to par again. The bike was intended to be my urban ride but has become my main ride. It feels that good. As for some of the more questionable parts...just replace as they brake. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$600.00 | | Purchased At: | trail blazer bikes in Canada | | Strengths: | Everything but the fork & brakes | | Weaknesses: | the fork really and maybe the brakes | | Similar Products Used: | some raleight, GT arrowhead, Gary Fisher joshua F4 and demoed Santa cruz bullit, cannondales and khs fxt pro and comp. | | Bike Setup: | none yet but I hope next month the 2002 marzocchi shiver and avid mech | | Bottom Line: | Well, I'm not an expert rider but I really love to do anything: xc, some urban, DH and freeride. And all I have to say is WOW!!!! Nice handling, tuff frame, bars, cranks, pedals. Derraillers work pretty fine (obviously it's not xt).
EXR comp its not so nice but compared to my previews bike's forks (RST and Rockshox) work fine. I going to try the 2002 shiver. Brakes do they job but levers are not too fun to use. Avid levers and probably avid disc brakes are coming.
Well, for 600 usd its really a nice bike. I cannot afford for a cool double suspension (Santa Cruz Bullit, Kona Stinky or Intense ...but I have a really cool and good looking hard tail.
KONA......nice job | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1049.00 | | Purchased At: | Northern Cycle - Canadian Dollars | | Strengths: | Great beginner urban assault vehicle! | | Weaknesses: | Brakes, seat hurts my bottom. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized P.2, Oryx, Giant. | | Bike Setup: | Hayes brakes - upgraded when bought | | Bottom Line: | An excellent bike for the money. Won't climb the same as my comfort bike that I use on the trails, but going down will be that much more fun. Bring on the skinnys, stair drops, fun parks, kickers, etc. There is a hell of a lot of concrete in Toronto that is taunting me. ;) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$600.00 | | Purchased At: | store | | Strengths: | everything, except the fork. BUY THE SCRAP (but upgrade the fork. Can't go wrong for the $$$$$ Excellent freeride bike. Greatin the park, ds, dh, urban. Maybe try some hydro disks for dh. $650.00 | | Purchased At: | Jolley's Alternative Wheels | | Strengths: | Frame is verry strong and not too heavy, I love the feel of the kona DH handle bars. Big beafy peddals are verry uselfull for big drops. Tiogo factory DH tires suit all kinds of riding verry well. | | Weaknesses: | Sun Ditch Witch are hard to trust off of those 8+ foot drops,(will be upgrading to alex supra D's). Other than that this bike is fairly big hit ready ....Marzochi EXR Comp isnt ready for the BIG hits either...but so far it suits my needs | | Similar Products Used: | kona scab, speacialized P2 | | Bike Setup: | stock everythig eccept a set of shimano mechanical disc brakes ..and a 24 inch alex supra D on the rear and a 26 inch alex supra D up front. ... | | Bottom Line: | An awsome bike for its $$$ .. It's opened doors to the biking world that I'm absolutely crazy about. For those riders either just getting into the sport of freeriding and urban assult(like me) or if ur an experienced rider this bike will take a beating and ask for more. $650.00 | | Purchased At: | Trisports | | Strengths: | Wicked frame, tires, most components. | | Weaknesses: | Fork could be a bit smoother (EXR Comps don't have open bath); brakes not great, lever not comfortable; Alivio Deraillers; I screwed the pedal inserts right out of the crank when trying to change pedals so I've been waiting three weeks for Truvative to send me new ones. | | Similar Products Used: | GT Ruckus HT, Kona NUNU, Specialized P.3 | | Bike Setup: | Stock + Deore rear derailler, Shimano 646 Platform Clipless | | Bottom Line: | An exceptional ride! The low stand-over makes the bike easy to fling around, but my medium still has a nice long top tube. The Scrap always feels like it operates as a solid unit and it handles beautifully. A small amount of BB flex notwithstanding, it's very stiff, especially the front end. The tires rock and the component spec is strong except for the things that will probably break anyway (deraillers, etc.). I thought I would miss the 3rd ring, but I really don't around here. Plus, I have already scratched the bash-guard which would have cost me a couple of teeth with a big ring. I hope to upgrade to discs soon as there's nothing wrong with the brakes - there's just nothing special about 'em. Overall, a kick-ass ride that you simply cannot beat for the money. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$500.00 | | Strengths: | Frame(build-materials/geometry) Crank/BB/bashguard Riser bar/ seat
| | Weaknesses: | Brakes/levers "Jackshi*" pedals are not the cool forged sealed bearing pedals that kona makes. Like almost all replaceable R.derailler hangers, this one looks a little too weak.
| | Similar Products Used: | Surly Instigator, Kona scab, Brodie Bruzza, Trek bruiser | | Bike Setup: | Stock....so far(brakes are the first thing to go) | | Bottom Line: | The botom line is that Kona spent your money on the things that matter for a bike like this; the crankset, frame, fork(kind of), "cockpit," and tires. Some complain about the derailleurs being alivio, but the 8spd stuff is bombproof-shifts well-and is cheap. If you think that you are too cool to ride a bike with alivio, go buy an expensive Trek. If you really ride this bike the way it should, that derailleur is going to be toast soon enough anyway, in which case you can pony up 20 bones and buy a new one. The (Like most Zoochis) is really stiff during break-in. The springs are a bit heavy for trail riding, the only place I've been able to use all the travel is on big flat to flat drops. I have it set on the softest settign and weigh 170lb. Some softer springs would allow some adjustment. The little rubber things on the fork caps disappeared in minutes, and the "external preload adjustment" is done not with a knob-but a hex-wrench. The brakes are trash, they should have had the similarly priced Deore's. They don't hold adjustment, and the levers have a ton of slop. The cable stop/qr part of the brake arm bent badly allowing the front brake cable to detach(not cool). I guess they expect an instant upgrade. They stop well enough to use for a while, until you can upgrade. Kona makes some sweet platform pedals, but has two versions. The 50.00 ones they sell and the version they spec. The OE pedals look cast(not forged) and don't use sealed bearings. The OE pedals are still great, but not what I was expecting. The nit-pics aside. The bike does everything well. It climbs great, you almost can’t tell it weighs about 30lb(Large). Descends in a stable, yet nimble fashion. It jumps and drops easily. You should buy a bike like this, that you can play around on in any terrain and not worry about breaking it or scratching the paint. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
