$3500.00 | | Purchased At: | Vision Cyclery, SF | | Strengths: | First of all, thanks to Charlie at Vision. This version as not available in Oz, but my sister was going to the US. So I called Chuck, he helped me out, ordered the bike, sitched out the stem and bars and now I have a lovely machine.
It's a total package - not much you'd want to change - except maybe stem, bars, post, grips. A high end pimp machine that does it all really. | | Weaknesses: | Bit heavy in the arse-end, a bit of chain suck when dropping into granny - also happens sometimes when changing up rings. The rear derailleur will hit the chain stay when in smallest 2 cogs even with B tension wound right in. Fix it with a bit of old inner tube and zip tie. | | Similar Products Used: | Intense Tracer as previous ride. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for bars (EA70 risers), Stem (Thomson), Headset (King), Pedals (545). | | Bottom Line: | I loved the Tracer's performance, but it just wasn;t versatile enough. Don't get me wrong, the Tracer is great if you have the cash to set it up as she deserves and ride primarily XC or trails and like a fixed seat height (with only about 2 inches of real up/down adjustment).
But, I like to have the seat high when going to trailhead, drop it low for tech, long DH runs etc, and even though the Tracer is very well built (and at the time I bought it was THE ONLY machine to have) but is just not as burly or thrashable as the Dawg. That's OK though, cause it's a slightly different category. Fine if you are mostly an XC guy with minimal set-up variations.
Additionally, the Dawg Primo was just so well spec'd. The best xc disc setup, fantastic forx and shox, decent wheelset, great drivetrain etc.
And just super versatile. Jack up the seat height and lockit out for the road or long uphills. Release the lockout and drop the seat - then let it run DH superfast and super plush - and pull her up quick and safe with the hayes stoppers.
Super easy to throw around and very agile handling - not skittish, but seems sharper than the Tracer. Easy to bunny hop, feels stable in the air. I think the Tracer actually had slightly better performing rear, but this is super good and I never feel like I'm bottoming it out. Front ot rear.
Which leads me to the suspension. Red hot. Fox Forx are sooo smooth, as is the rear end - and ultra adjustable.
I have the rear set on the back mounting hole (more progressive) and the AVA at half. Stock is front hole and max AVA volume. I feel this strikes a good balance with the progressive forx.
This is an ideal do-it-all bike, and for me it represented an excellent opportunity to upgrade to discs, splined etc while getting a more versatile overall package. A great machine if you can only have one, or if you want to simplify your stable and enjoy rising a real mix of terrain - without whingeing that your bike's not light enough. Mine weights about 27 and a quarter pounds. All my BMX buddies marvel at how light it is...and I have no trouble climbing with it.

I favour riding very technical challenging trails, both slow and fast and the Dawg is really working out well. It is everything I wished the stinky could be. I miss the extra travel a bit at times but the suspension I'm runnning is really doing its job for me. I had become concerned that the direction most bikes in this style were going was with more travel (my buddies ride long travel titus switchblade, elsworth id) but not a problem so far. I am not doing serious drops so I have the sus. set up plush and 100mm of good travel really gets the job done. the straight post (previous a raceface layback which didn't fit and was slightly bending) plus more upright seat angle compared to stinky has made a noticable change in riding position. You have to remember to get way back off the seat at times or you're going over the front. I have always loved the way my previous konas handled, and this one is the best yet, haven't got to ride the competion but this bike is making me smile! the bike loves when I start to really get aggresive with it and motor!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I was a bit apprehensive about full sus bikes, this has totally changed my mind. You don't have to pick a line, just point and shoot. Yet, lock it out, and it'll climb anything! A real credit to Kona and their design. And the brakes r awsome, it's kinda wet here and they stay consistent, frightfully sharp!
The suspension is just soooo plush, but can take big hits in it's stride. It took a while to get the shocks 'dialled in', but once that's done, it just feels so right.

I weigh about 185, so you have a few pounds on me, but if you get the Primo, the better shocks will help a lot if you plan on dropping some medium sized drops (3-6 feet). Here's what I've found since then:
- The front Fox fork holds up well, I have bottomed it out on the sloppiest setting a bunch of times going over 3-5 foot drops, but it holds up well, nothing busted. The rear Fox shock, the same, it's been bottomed out a few times, but no damage at all.
- The Hayes bling-bling carbon fibre brakes are nice, but, need to be cared for. The design of the line into the hydraulic line from the grip is poor. With one bad fall, you'll break the pin that goes into the hydraulic line easily. I have constantly needed to adjust the play on the brake levers (almost every time before a ride) it seems that the lever pin backs out. Maybe I have a lemon brake set. Other than the constant maintenance on the lever play, the brakes work great. I'm not sure if the lower level Dawgs come with this brake set.
- The chain is light but weak, I broke it after about 10 rides. I'll be replacing it with a SRAM chainset, I'll sacrifice the weight for the durability. From what I hear from my friends, the SRAM chain is about the best you can get, never breaks.
- I replaced the outside gear with a BlackSpire Ring God to help with getting over log piles since I hardly ever used the outside gear. If you want some bite, but want the same, buy something other than the ringgod to replace that gear. I like it with no bite though, it helps me "roll" over logs at times.
- As far as your statement "I don't plan to huck it" well.... I would if I were you, the frame is very strong, and can take the beating and beg for more. I have watched (better riders than I) huck about 6 foot drops onto flat with no problem with the mid-line Dawg, it'll do that all day long. Although your added weight may reduce the hucking all day figure down a foot. I huck this bike over 3-4 foot drops all day long, roll over big rocky drops no problem, it wants to do it!
- How does it climb? - The weight to pull up the hill is very good, light. The derailer when forcing a gear switch on a hill will skip if you don't keep it tuned up, but otherwise fine. The chain - read my previous comment. It's light in the front so unless you quickly get used to it, you'll be pulling wheelies on a hard hill and have trouble. It just took me a few rides to get used to where to shift my weight to keep the bike on the ground and digging in. Which brings us to ....
- The tires - The stock tires - Tioga Extreme XC are "OK". They do very well on dry dirt, 1-2" mud. On any big mud they bog down a bit. On sand they don't have much hold, I've wiped out many times around a hard sand turn with these tires. On wet rock or mossy roots, they slide a lot, but what tires don't. It's hard for me to differentiate between my lack of riding skill or the equipment's performance sometimes. I will be replacing the tires with something a bit wider, with a bit more grip (probably 1.5" raptors). That should give me a bit more landing space for hucking and a bit more grip.
- Other things - The grips have been torn apart by my constant crashes onto rocky surfaces, I'll have to replace those soon. The seat is comfy, like a couch, and holds up well. I will be replacing the handle bar with an Easton Monkey Lite in a few days, just for the weight, looks, and may get one with a bit more rise to pull the bike closer. If you ever have the chance to talk to the guys at Hayes about the brakes, they are very cool people, know their stuff and ride too! I don't think I'd change too much else about this bike other than I mentioned, it's pretty good as it comes. I'm starting to do a lot of bigger drops and really abusing the bike (a lot of downhill runs over big stuff), so I may pick up a DH bike just for that, but this bike is just perfect for the rides I usually do (technical & fast). I really love this bike, honestly, it's a great bike. The Dawg Primo was worth the extra cash since it's such a joy to ride. If you can still get one (it may be hard) I would definitely recommend it.

It's my 1st full susp. and I was worried about climbing, but after my first ride I couldn't believe how well it handled the hills. Oh yeah - descents are way more fun and fast, too. The rear suspension can be adjusted in 3 ways - (1) lockout (2) rebound rate and (3) air volume - I'm still playing with it to find the optimum level, but so far so good. Steering is nimble, but it feels beefy enough to handle the bigger bumps. Can't say enough good things about it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
