Favorite Trail:Majura Pines ACT
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Phantomcycles.com.au
Strengths:-Frame continues to hold up after 6 years with no issues.
-Truvative cranks are still going with no real work being required.
- Alivio shifter just keeps going!
- EXR now on my girlfriends bike has had no issues.
Weaknesses:- Wheels finally gave up with a hub cracking about 2 years ago (does that qualify as a weakness).
- SDG saddle was no good for XC riding.
Similar Products Used:Giant STP, Felt, GT, Gaint Rainer 02, Shogun Rythum, Rocky Mountan Flow
Bike Setup:Maxxis Larrsen TT Rear 2.35(07), Maxxis Lopes Bling Bling 2.35 (06), Hayes XC Brakes(07), Charge Spoon Saddle (07), Shimano SPD's (06), Sram x7 (07) full driveline update, Manitou Stance 130mm (05), ODI lock on's. Stock bars, stem, sweat post and wheels.
Bottom Line:With some upgrades over the past two years this bike has continued to prove itself as one that is in it for the long haul. I now ride mainly XC loops and find that for a dirt jumper the bike performs fairly well. The bike really has cost me very little over the past 6 years and still enjoys a bit of abuse. It definitely likes going down compared to up. I think a larger size frame would have helped me, but the reason I bought the bike was for street, jumps and some DH.

With recent news of dirt jumps being built near my home, the Stuff will find its next stage in life as a single speed jump bike. This bike has been so good to me I don't think I could part with it.

Purchased At:Standish Unley
Strengths:Bomb proof frame, splined BB, bars, stem, forks, everything pretty much. even this S**ty Tektro brakes have been goin strong and in two years of riding have always worked and never needed the pads replaced.
Weaknesses:seat comes loose occasionaly, tires are getting kinda balled after two years of riding, tires are also a bit thin, grips wore away after about a month, everyone says the derraileur but mine has been trashed and only needs the cable adjusted occasionaly.
Similar Products Used:GT hardtail with manitou forks, Mongoose NX 9.7 with 7" boxxers, Raliegh hardtail with RST 281 TL's :)
Bike Setup:Stock basicaly, never changed the tires, Marzocchi bomber EXR, everything stock except the grips
Bottom Line:This bike is indestructable. I am a harsh rider, this bike has been trashed and nothing serious has gone wrong, the rims occasionally need to be made true again, and the tires are looking more like roadie tires after two years. But this bike has been in a DH Race, i go downhilling on it all the time, jumping, street riding, DH, XC, trails, even trials this bike can take it all. brakes are worth about 20 bucks and i have raced with them and never changed the pads and i can still manage enough strength through them to do trials. crank is perfectly straight still, forks are working a treat, and ive only serviced them once, the frame is as good as it ever was. if you are looking for a do anything bike that will never let you down. then this is the bike for you.

Bottom Line:Before this little gem landed in my life I was putting around on some “POS” specialized hard rock, and that bike sucked C**K . If I dropped of anything higher then what seemed like 2 feet, my rims would either be bent or thrown out of true. it seemed like a bunnyhop would even do the trick. And don’t even get me started on the black colored aluminum poles that Rock Shox decided to call suspension on that bike. The Stuff was what brought me back to life. Everything about it was just what I wanted. The beefy frame, the nice smooth suspension, the breaks. Oh Yea baby I was in heaven. If you are looking for a bike that that will do for you what ever you want and take all of the abuse that you can dish out then the Stuff is the only way to go. A deal such as this one cant be beat. Bottom Line:I weigh 280plus pounds,6'3", and beat the cr@p out of bikes. Urban and trails mainly. 3-6ft drops to flat, stair gaps, nasty/rocky eastcoast trails. It weighs a ton, but so do I so it feels lite, and easy to move when I'm on it. I didn't think this this frame would hold up that well but I have really been hard on it, and it just won't break, so buy it. Any questions e-mail me.

Duration Product Used:6 months

Purchased At:Mal Adjusted - Canberra
Strengths:nice frame (very strong)...forks feel really nice with just the right amount of travel...wheels appear so far to be relatively ridgid, although buckles still occur, and how could i forget that very handy bash plate!
Weaknesses:seatpost bolts come loose if you land on it, chainset is too low spec'd for the bike (but not a major fault), tires are just plain useless - trade them in when you buy the bike, also... ive had a reccurring problem with chainsuck that manages to put great gashes into the metalwork. oh yeah, i dont know if anyone else has this problem (i think its the brakes i added) but one side of the rear frame triangle was actually being pulled in towards the wheel when braking! -but the aftermarket brakebooster fixed this minor glitch no worries
Similar Products Used:i tested a whole range of similar bikes before purchasing, including: kona roast, Specialized P3, Trek bruiser 2, as well as some avanti (cant quite remember the name but it was nothing in comparison to everything else). I would have liked to have seen the Orange missile, however dollars were of the essence!
Bike Setup:These are the necessary extras i added when purchasing:
michillen comp DH 2.6 front tyre, ritchey 2.5 rear tyre, azonic double wall riser bars, shimano deoreLX V brakes front and rear, rear brake booster
Bottom Line:Despite all the weaknesses i mentioned, this is one hell of a bike! Stock, the bike would have cost me AUD$1499, but i feel the upgrades i made were definately necessary despite the fact that they pushed the price up to AUD$1750. As far as rideability goes, the Stuff handles like a dream. Its a great bike for jumping and general freeriding (what i use it for). So trust me... go out and buy yourself one!... you wont be dissapointed!

Strengths:Good frame really nice plush front fork 4 inches. pretty nice rims, (ive rebuilt them umm 4 times?) and a very nice bar.
Weaknesses:well. Ive already replaced the front chain rings (for salsa cycles) the chain bent when the rings whent so i replaced that with a sram pc 68. i replaced the not so nice brakes with shimano discs. and whenerv the peddles got banged or hit..a pin fell out. So now i have azonic a frames. the brake levers went to. nowi have shimano deore. its a nice set up now..a real beast. however the tioga dh tires seemed to fail after a few hours of intense trails covered in rock (the yreads are NOT suppoused to fall off) so now i put on maxiss larsen tires.
Bike Setup:Shimano m515 deore disc brakes, deore brake levers, maxiss larsen tires. azonic a frame peddals sdg saddle. stock fork. sram pc 68 chain salsa cycles pro chain rings (i recomend them)
Bottom Line:this bike is a beast however I wouldn't go carrenning down a hill at 55 miles an hour with stock brakes. the tires hold for a while. I love the bike and it makes out of bounds riding a dream come true. Anyone loking ot bomb around trails but not wanting to have to worry about a fork so big you flip while going up a hill.

Bottom Line:I got this Bike This year (2002) and I got it used For 550.00 canadien in almost perfect condition and it has nothing wrong with it except the cranks fall loose after about 4 or 5 hours of nonstop intense riding. I use to have a fullsuspension Mongoose with Marzocchi Bomber Z.1 Wedge forks and I upgraded to a hardtail, thats right, UPGRADED.
I do dirt jumping Urban Riding and Free riding and this is by far the best bike I have ever Ridden. I dont know who this Rob guy is but this bike is made out of 7005 downhill grade aluminum and is definitly not week. For him to write a review like about a bike like this he would definitly be only doing Big hits in his riding to write that kind of review and probably needs a Full Suspension bike. I can do everything on this bike I could do on my full suspension bike plus a whole lot more. Just dont listen to that guy.
If you want a Hardtail this is the way to go. Id bet you could even use this bike for cross country.

Weaknesses:Tioga tires suck, and the fork is kind of cheese.
Similar Products Used:specialized p2
Bike Setup:stock, cept I switched out the handle bars to some more bmx style ones.
Bottom Line:It's a good bike. I am pretty sure it's strong too, just based on Kona's reputation. I think the biggest drop I have hit on this bike is like 3 ft. So, nothing to big yet. The tioga tires are lame. They wear down really quick. The stock tubes suck or at least mine did. The bike is a bit heavy, but hey what do you expect for such a strong frame.

Now that they have disc brakes stock at the same price, I would pretty much say it's worth the money. However, peep that specialized p2. Pretty much the same bike and geometry for about 300 less.

For bikes with this style geometry it's pretty dope. I would say they need to drop 100 bucks off the price but fugget.

I have the 2001 model so I have the drop dead gourgous green frame, with a Deore drive train.

Strengths:***This is the 2003 Stuff***

Looks amazing(pics on internet don't do the colour and frame justice), Great Geometry, "Bang for youre buck", frame strength and well... it's a KONA :-)
Weaknesses:i don't "think" there's too much more room at the rear to put on some larger tires, like 2.5's or somethin'. But don't take my word for it cause i just demo'd it.
Similar Products Used:I was also considering the Norco Sasquatch, Torrent and Kona Roast (all 2003)
Bottom Line:Currently i am 90%-95% sure i will be getting this bike in the spring. This bike is simply amazing for the cost. To tell u the truth i currently own a "2001 Kona Yee-Ha" which is a city commuter/road bike and although it's a Kona it still has entirely different geometry, the "Stuff" was probally the only bike that i felt totally in control with and right at home on it, on my very first ride!!!! I rode the bike around 2 blocks for about 10-15 minutes and i got 3 compliments on a nice bike!!:) When i get this thing i am planning on upgrading to Hope M4 disc's right at the time of purchase so i can get the value of the Deore mechanical discs, and maybe a Marzocchi Dirt Jumper II or III fork. This is also why i give this bike 5 Flamin' Chilies for value, because the value of both deore discs equal to a bit less than one Hope M4, so therefore i am technically only paying for one Hope M4 but i am actually getting two!!!!Hope it make sense, lol (-: Bottom Line: If u are even slightly considering this bike u should get it mainly beacuse of the value, geometry and the frame can be used for Trail Riding, Dirt Jumping, Freeriding, Urban, a bit of XC and some people have even done DS and DH on this thing!!!!!!!! Strengths:This is the 2nd time ive put in a review frame fork are still goin strong and are hilights prettymuch everything is good on this bike for the price it cost
Weaknesses:ive had problems with the tioga tyres- the front one got a sidewall rip and they both wore down really quickly. The seatpost clamp is sh*t it (why the f*ck wont they let me swear properly on this site???)iz really hard to do up i tried gettin a replacement but the size is really irregular. One of the spoke nipples got rounded when i was unbuckling my rim that could have been because of my inexperience, the spoke tool, or the nipple. My pedals came loose and one stripped the crank-pedal thread. I had to pay $50 for a thing called a helicoil which they put in after redoing the thread and then screwing this helicoil in to make the thread the right size forthe pedal again. The rims are always slightly buckled which means i cant adjust the v's how i would want to. I could fix this prob with discs which i am considering but they are bloody expensive for a decent set.

Bottom Line:This bike is really good for what i do its a bit of an allrounder. I would love to have something like a kona stinky but it costs double the price and it is pretty specialised, the 2003 model even more so. It was the best value bike by farin my price range the only prob is there are some cheaper components substituted like deraileurs and brakes. Basically if u want a bike like this in the price range in the price range this is the best you will get so buy it soon.

Strengths:Amazing frame, has taken a real beating and still comes back for more. The bike is very balanced and is great for jumping.
Weaknesses:The brakes had to go, but budget allowing I bought HMX-1 mechanical disc brakes. Some people like the EXR's, but I think they suck big time, I demo'ed em once and had some Psylo XC's on with 5 inch travel, what an improvement. This bike looks twice as good with the silver psylos. The front bottom sprocket it also rather weak, I have bent two right onto the frame.
Similar Products Used:Nothing near it

Bottom Line:There is no hardtail out there with better value than this bike. It conquers all other bike even close to the price range. Sometimes people just sit and stare at it for sheer looks. It isn't too heavy, but its solid enough to give you confidence. If you like dirtjumping or all around riding, this is the perfect bike for anything.

Strengths:Great frame, same one used on the Roast and Chute. All around excellent bike!
Weaknesses:The seat kinda got borked and the rails aren't too strong on it. Also the brakes are kinda crappy but they do the job, you might wanna upgrade to some Avids, or perhaps discs, if your wallet allows.
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:Great bike for riders who wanna start pushing themselves more. The bike really gives you more confidence, and besides all of that, the shiny grey is very entertaining ;)

More experienced riders who like hardtails could even go for this bike as, like I've said before, the frame is really strong and you just hafta upgrade the components, if you wanted them to be stronger (or as they break, your choice ;)

Only reason the bike didn't get 5 for the value is that the brakes weren't too good, but it's possible Kona changed them to better ones halfway throught the year because the 15' frame I tried at Cove Cycles had Avids. Also, it have just been my bike, but the seat rails (SDG Gordo) are squeaking really loud when I sit down on it and I'm not a heavy rider, whatsoever (140 lbs, 5'7").

All in all, great bike for increasing confidence! The frames rockhard and the same thing used on the Chute, so you shouldn't hafta worry about strength.

Awesome Color... not the drab gray like the 2002
(2001 Electric Green 15")
Weaknesses:Rear stays are narrow and won't take a huge tire. I'm going for a 24" X 2.6... wish me luck!
30.0 seatpost...hard to find a seatpost but if it's bigger it's got to be for a good reason.
Um, it's heavy...duty, and I like it that way

Bike Setup:Do you really care? We're talkin' 'bout the frame here, jerky...
Bottom Line:Well what can I say... This frame rocks!

I bought this bike as a "frame only" deal and built it from the ground up with a few pointers from a friend. The first thing I noticed was how stiff it is and how well this stiffness translated into riding. You can really push this thing into corners. The frame really gives you confidence when you're sliding the back tire and aiming for the next jump. It just has an eerily controlled flickability, all thanks to its excellent geometry. This also shows itself when you're in the air. It feels really stable and adjusts itself well from any input from the rider. Even when I've landed funky with my front tire touching down first, the rearend follows and won't slither around after weird landings. It's a natural descender and if you're good enough you could probably teach some of those sprung monkeys a thing or two. The Stuff has definitely made me into a faster and more daring rider. There's a reason everyone raves about this bike and now I know why. My friend had to get a taste and bought a 2000 Stuff which he quickly realized was far better than his previous Azonic BS1 tin can. It's such a good frame it should be called:
|| ___ _ _ ___ ||
| |_| |_ {_ |_| | |
| | | |_ _} | | | |

It really is that good...

Strengths:Frame strength, fork, wheels and tires. Pedals rock. Brakes are stronger than you'd expect for Tektro V-brakes.
Weaknesses:Weight, Alivio drivetrain not fancy enough for some egos. Tektro levers have an awful feel and curve to them.
Similar Products Used:In a class by itself
Bike Setup:Stock, with Avid SD7 brake levers. Soon to have Avid discs.
Bottom Line:I love this bike. It seems strong everywhere it counts. Fork is a little heavy and lacks adjustability, but the smooth feel should make most riders happy. It also makes a bit of noise when doing drops or riding rough terrain, but the stiffness of the frame makes up for it. Although the noise made me nervous at first, the bike has given me no reason to worry and still inspires confidence. This bike will probably outlive me. And though the weight killed me at first, it disappears after the first few rides.

Coming from an entire XT drivetrain on my previous bike, I can say that the Alivio shifters and derailleurs, though they may not impress my friends, have NEVER missed a shift or made me wish they were higher-end. I'm sure I'll replace them with LX and XT when they wear out, but I'm in no hurry.
Avid discs are coming soon, but the Tektro brakes are plenty strong, even on a beefy bike like this. And changing out the levers has made them feel even better. Strong wheels and the BIGGEST, most obscene 2.1 tires I have ever seen make this a tank that will roll over nearly anything, and still feel somewhat plush. The pedals are awesome, and that's coming from someone who has never ridden platforms before.

The bottom line is this: I work in a shop and actually wanted this bike so bad I went somewhere else and paid retail for it. And I have NO regrets.

Strengths:Super stiff frame offers super control whether you are climbing, downhilling, jumping or whatever. The truvativ Cranks are also very durable. The geometry of the frame is perfect. I keep up with my Downhilling buddies on the full DH sleds. I made some changes to it but most where for my personnal preference. I use the bike on the tamer DH course and it performs better than some of the full DH sleds. It is a good bike for the money.
Weaknesses:The rear derailler is kinda lame for what the bike is built for. Seatpost clamp is a QR. The seatpost is weak. It really should have a chainguide on it.
Bike Setup:I replaced the rear derailer with a Shimano LX, changed over to 9 speed road cog, and a Shimano XT shifter. Changed the front to an MRP DS chainguide. The stem, handlebars, seatpost, and clamp where all upgraded to AZONIC (one of my sponsors) and the tires where changed to KENDA (another sponsor). ODI grips I also put on. Hayes Disc Brake (yet another sponsor).
Bottom Line:Buy the bike. The initial cost of the bike is good and can be upgraded as you see necessary. Racing it in a DH course and being able to win on a hardtail says something. This is actually a replacement for last years model, my last bike was on a trunk rack and the car had gotten rearend at a high rate of speed. Luckly no one got hurt. FYI the frame got bent but the welds held up. This bike rocks. KONA builds them to take the abuse.

Strengths:Value for money - nothing else comes close to the frame strength / component mix. Front suspension is great - disc ready rims a bonus for later.
Weaknesses:Tires are great offroad when run a littel soft but this is not good on the road especially in the wet (I'm changing them soon to maxxis mobsters). The stock seat is hard but my gel seat is too wide (but comfy !). Stock pads chew the rims especially in the wet muddy stuff.
Similar Products Used:Kona Blast
Bike Setup:Stock except for 3rd 42T chainring, toothfairy bashguard, lizard skin, kool-stop pads & velocity brake booster front & rear. Cygo & vista lights.
Bottom Line:This is the best value bike in it's class I could find. I ride steep rocky downhills with small dropoffs / logs etc & this bike handles my numerous endo's beautifully ! I have done some pretty bad things to it and it hasn't broken yet - except for buckles in both wheels but not bad ones. I have no problems riding single track & fire trails - on the really steep stuff you do feel the weight a little - just means you'll get fitter !

This bike has a very strong frame and a good mix of components. I wanted a bike that was strong, could do a bit of jumping & serious downhills as well as firetrails, single track and generally stuffing around - this is it. My brother and mate both have the same bike - we all love 'em. I may put disc brakes on my bike at some stage if my hands don't stop hurting going downhill.

If you are looking for this type of bike you'll be very happy with this one.

Bottom Line:killer ride, need the better brakes for heaver riders though, i weigh 230, but it kicks ass. I ended up doing a 5 foot endo and it did not even scrach the bike, and the high speed handling is something else, ive had it up to 70 km/h, and stable. I think the endo caused my hound in the headset, but it is only a minor creaking. Buy this bike if you are looking to climb the hill to blast down. Highly recomend the brake upgrade though.

Price Paid: $1150.00
Purchased At:Bike Barn
Strengths:Very strong frame, great parts, everything that a good hardtails bike should have. The price value was perfect for what I was looking for. Very nice looking bike, and the color looks much more imporved than the ugly parkle orange from the 2001 frame. Hubs are ready to upgrade to disc brakes too. The picture does no justice, take a look at it in person.
Weaknesses:It only has 16 gears, however I'd rather have a guard over my chain ring than to have more harder gears. Requires something to protect from the chain swinging and chipping the nice paint job. Unfortunately every scratch you get will stand out, I've already put a dent in the side and it really stands out from everything.
Bottom Line:This bike kicks ass. It's definately very tough, but be careful to do anything stupid because you don't want to scratch it, it's just too beautiful :) It's perfect if you are into downhill free riding, jumping, or just riding around town. And the price fits perfectly into my price range.

Strengths:this frame is very well built, with kona clump tubing and box section seat stays, u should not have to worry about breaking this thing, it is a strong as anything i have seen. the stuff had no problems with 4-5 ft drops, and jumps like a beauty. AND THE PRICE. kona clump double butted box alu., truvative NS cranks, marzocchi fork and ditch witch rims, kona must have too many to sell taem at around $1000+. i have always been a big kona fan AND THIS BIKE JUST MADE ME A REAL FAN.
Weaknesses:The bike comes with alivio components, but hey, just get it up graded, no skin off my balls. this is a Out Of BoUNDS/ NORTHSHORE HARDTAIL, so all it needs is 16 speeds. other than that, i would upgrade the breaks eventually, if u r a serious rider like i am

Favorite Trail:With this bike, I only do Out-of-Bounds!!!
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:The Touring Cyclist
Strengths:It's a much, much shorter list to list the weaknesses than the strengths. This bike is as strong as all hell. I weigh over 250, and this bike had no problems landing over 3 ft drops. Also, this bike is worth much more than the minimal $800 price tag. The strong Kona frame, the Truvativ cranks, the Ditch Witch rims, the Kona DB riser bar, Kona stem, and the Marzocchi fork are alone worth about a $1000. Thanks a lot Kona.
Weaknesses:The chain slaps around a bit, so get a gaurd on your chainstay, but hey, that's no big deal at all. I was a little disappointed that the bike comes with Alivio components and it's only an 8-speed, but I aint racing this bike, so I don't care. At least if I break something, it's not a loss of a high-end component.
Similar Products Used:I've tested out the 2000 & 2002 Kona Roast. I own a Gary Fisher Kaitai, but it's a XC bike, so I guess it aint that similar.
Bike Setup:Stock! Nothing on this bike needs to be upgraded or replaced.
Bottom Line:From what I understand, this bike used to come with a one bolt seatpost. Luckily, Kona's learned from their mistake and ship it now with a two bolt system. That was really the only problem with this bike. If you want a bike to do some out-of-bounds riding, but don't have at least $1200, buy this bike now. Yes, it is heavy, but it's supposed to be. This bike will take a serious ass-kickin and still come back for more. Every thing on this bike is strong. Even the chain is slightly thicker than the upgraded Kona Roast. Before, I was riding my Fisher on the streets, and I could feel my bike flinch in pain with 1.5 ft tall drops. I didn't even feel that confident on it while doing an urban riding. But the first night out on this bike, I was doing over 3 ft drops. The confidence that I lacked on other bikes was soon filled with this one. If you want a boosted feeling of confidence while doing any urban riding, check out this Kona, because nothing can touch it at this price.

Similar Products Used:none, I based my purchase on my online research
Bike Setup:100% stock
Bottom Line:You have to ride it to believe it. If you have never had a freeride bike before get this, you will not be disappointed. I got the bike today. The first thing that amazed me was the looks. In person (so to speak), the bike looks so goddamn good. Easily the best looking bike in the entire shop, including the Ellsworths and other konas. The fork is great so far, and should stay great based on what I've read and heard. The stem looks worthy of a tank, twice the thickness of other bikes' stems. The tires look much bigger than the 2.1 they're rated at have been great so far. The seat is just soft enough to save your ass without giving you a limp (if you know what I mean). The drivetrain, while only 16-speeds, is perfect for freeriding and can still get you around town plenty fast (trust me I was worried about it at first, but the 16-speeds are all you'll ever need). Pedals are great for grip, but a little painful to learn on (I have 2 2" gouges in my shin along with a ping-pong ball-sized bump). If you know a better overall freeride bike for under $1000, email me because I know that it doesn't exist. Norco Sasquatch might be a little better, but it doesn't have the heavy-duty components and the better components you get are still cheap and will need to be replaced anyway. You can't go wrong with this bike.

Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Derby City Outfitters
Strengths:The frame is built very well, most of the stock components are sturdy. The tioga tires are a good match for this bike but the 2.3 DH versions are even better. The paint is unique, always gets looks. Supposedly the ditch witch rims aren't the greatest, but I haven't had any problems with them . Disc ready.
Weaknesses:The seatpost bolt broke, apparently I'm not the only one. (I have the 2001 model). Chain slaps around alot, buy a stay protector before you lose all your paint
Similar Products Used:P3
Bike Setup:No-name cable discs, swapped bashguard for 44t raceface ring, tioga 2.3DH tires
Bottom Line:For the money, it's hard to fault the Stuff. It can take a lot of abuse but is still light enough for general riding. With a big ring swapped in place of a bash guard, it can also be a very fast bike. I bought it to learn how to do drops, stairs, manuals, etc... I'm not a very quick learner when it comes to this kind of stuff, meaning the bike has taken quite a few crashes. It crashes well, and no major components have broken yet. You can even take the Stuff on trails and singletrack if you want. The bike is very nimble, but the handlebars are too wide for tight riding around a lot of trees.
***If you own a 2001 Stuff and have not had problems with your seatpost, you will. Fix it now. Mine fell apart while I was riding down the street off the saddle. I just looked back and it was on the sidewalk behind me. Not cool. Imagine this happening while pulling a manual or wheelie drop.***
Aside from that one problem, I think the Stuff would be a great bike for many different riders. I give it double fives because of the great quality, good spec, and incredible value.
