Submitted by brian a Weekend Warrior from Ramstein, Germany
Date Reviewed: October 14, 2005
Favorite Trail:boar hill
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Kona dealer, Ramstein Germany
Strengths:It's a simple solid bike with good components. The frame, wheels and gears have all be great.
Weaknesses:I bought the 2003 model with Shimano "resin" brakes -- these brakes weren't up to the challenge. Hayes brakes would have been better. On steep decents the Shimano's would get so hot they'd warp! After replacing the rotors with after market stuff, things are better.
Similar Products Used:GT
Bike Setup:XT rear, shimano brakes
Bottom Line:Except for the occasional brake trouble, I've really enjoyed the bike. It's solid and simple and performs very well in all but the most extreme conditions.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:2002 model in 21", very solid frame, Marzocchi EXR air fork functions better than expected for a lower line fork. Best bang for buck i have found for a slightly better than entry level cross country race bike. For $800, the shop helped me out with some upgrades to sell me the bike. Upgrades over stock are an XT rear derailuer and disc brakes
Weaknesses:Not a fan of the grips(easily and cheaply remidied with a $8 set of ODI yeti hardcore grips) and the rear wheel was porly assembled and i broke several spokes on the disc brake side off of the hub and would constantly work its way out of true.
Bike Setup:Changed rear derailuer to XT over the stock LX(done when purchased bike for free to get me to buy the bike), I ended up buying a new Sun Singletrack/XT disc hub wheelset with DT 14g spokes, New XT front derailuer, new grips, thomson seatpost and stem(highly recomend the stem upgrade!), and mechanical disc brakes(included in the upgrade from the shop i purchased at for no charge. Disc mechanisms came off a 2003 model Kona they were parting out).
Bottom Line:Overall, this is the best value for entry level cross country race bike. With the upgrades i did, it is now comperable to bikes almost twice the price and the upgrades totalled me $230 to get it to that point(i lucked out with the upgrades...i was able to get deep discounts from my school team sponsers).

Strengths:Good frame, components.
Weak fork.
Weaknesses:Fork is a JudyTT...bottom line fork. SUCKS! constantly bobs and bottomed out a few times...until the seals broke
Similar Products Used:Trek, Rocky Mountain, KHS
Bike Setup:Had to get a new fork
Bottom Line:What really pissed off was when the fork busted on me Kona gave me the run around on getting fixed or replaced...finally I went to RockShox and they fixed it. But I got a Manitou instead. Hmmmm...geeee...If the engine fails on my car I don't have to take to who actually built the broke part...I take it to the dealer.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Solid components.
Weaknesses:Frame is questionable. Front fork sucks. Customer service sucks.
Similar Products Used:Trek, Specialized
Bike Setup:Updated front shock to Fox Vanilla. Stock
Bottom Line:The first frame cracked. Customer service was a pain to anything done and blamed me for 'riding too hard'! WTF! Anyway, they sent another frame for $200 and the bike shop swapped all the parts for free because they knew I got screwed. Other then that, the stock RS TT sux!
Since then, the bike has been solid, maybe the first frame was a fluke. If it wasn't for the $550, I wouldn't have bought it.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $850.00
Purchased At:Cove Bikes
Strengths:Strength, value for the money
Weaknesses:seat, grips, rear wheel
Similar Products Used:previous Cinder Cone
Bike Setup:2002 CindeCone, Brakes changed to Deore LX and seat changed to Mountain Wilderness (I think) on purchase, grips changed to Serfa, Rhyno Lite rear rim.
Bottom Line:I'm 240 and use the bike mainly for commuting in the city, with occasional offroad use. I love the bike, I replaced my previous CinderCone with this one when it was stolen. I am pleased with the subsitution brakes, saddle and grips. The stock Kona grips are terrible. The bike handles comfortably for my size and is very durable. The Bomber fork is very good for the price. The spokes in the rear rim began to dome out the rim in some spots, with faigue/stress crack radiating from them. The rim was just replaced by the Rhyno Lite. The shifting has always been smooth and slick, and the LX brakes are very nice, though my next bike will have disk brakes. Overall, solid value

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Strengths:My review is for the 2003 cindercone since it's not on the site. All in all it's a great bike...the frame is light, it climbs amazingly well, the derailer is awesome and it shifts smoothly.
Weaknesses:pedals, rims, and for some reason I'm having a problem w/ the disk breaks. I think its b/c I break more than I need to, but it seems like I always have to adjust them. I was even thinking of switching back to v-breaks. The strengths outweigh the weaknesses.
Similar Products Used:none really, other than a cheap raleigh and a norco cross-country.
Bike Setup:Stock, w/ new grips, and I'm hoping to get crank bros. candy pedals as soon as they come to canada.
Bottom Line:I think the cindercone is an awesome bike and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone. If you have enough money up-grade to hydraulic disk breaks (or just buy a better kona x-country) and get new pedals. A lot of the complaints have been about the seat, however I think it's a decent seat and haven't had any problems. Overall a great light bike!!!

Bottom Line:I have the 2003 model. They didnt put it on the site. I have been researching for hours at a time for about 3 months. Although no riding expert I would now call myself a bike shopping expert. GET THIS!!! better than anything I have seen for the price. Also consider NuNu(kona). Cant beat the deal and the look.

Favorite Trail:Flat Rock Ranch, Texas
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Action Bikes , U.C., Texas
Strengths:Light frame, good componets, awesome paint job,and strong for the money spent.
Weaknesses:The saddle was horrible at first, but as my butt became hard as a rock and chapped, it became a little more bearable.
Similar Products Used:A crappy brand o mountain bike I am too ashamed to name
Bike Setup:Factory, except for the Titec Ithys XC race saddle ( the best I nave ever used, and the only I will ever use. ),and the Wellgo WAM-17 clipless pdeals ( also very good )
Bottom Line:The Cinder Cone is a very good bike for the money. From the fork,( Marzocchi EXR Air ), all the way down to the drivetrain, my Kona kicks major A*@!!!! ( Just ask the guy that I smoked at Mc Allister Park last weekend ). Kona has got me hooked on their bikes and I will ride no other. I have done just as well on my $650 bike, if not better, than those out there sporting bikes at $2000. If you are looking for a great beginner bike, have about $800, then look no further than what Kona has to offer.

Favorite Trail:Fremont Older
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Calabazas Cyclery
Strengths:good components, nice paint job.
THe marzocchi bomber is nice. Very well damped, and it's air sprung so it's adjustable.
THe bike is also very fast. THe power transfer seemes to be efficient.
Weaknesses:It has threaded holes on the dropouts for a rack or fenders, but a rack conflicts with the disk brake mounts, so I had to leave it off.
THe wheels are horribly weak. They click and twang when they hit the ground hard and are already coming untrue.
the tubing is also only butted on the seat tube; the rest is straight guage, but I guess that's what you get at this price range. It's better than my previous bike, though, so it is not bad.
As other reviewers mentioned, the saddle is pretty bad, too. It is poorly padded and shaped weird.
Deore LX is not shifting completely smoothley for me but perhaps it has a break-in period or is not adjusted properly.
THe handle bars are a little wide but I got used to it.
Similar Products Used:GT saddleback--horrible and cheap
Schwinn dualie--old and steal but comfortable
miscellaneous
Bike Setup:stock, except the front wheel, I put on a deore hub, mavic 517 rim, wheelsmith spoked homemade wheel and I swapped out the saddle for an old bontrager I had. Both are better than the stock
Bottom Line:A good bike for messing around and going on some demanding trails, while being affordable. THe before-mentioned weaknesses are all minor; over all, a great bike.

Favorite Trail:widdop moor gorple resevoir
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:cycle gear, halifax england
Strengths:light responsive frame, excellent forks and well chosen components giving good performance for the money smooth shifting deore gears, excellent avid brakes
Weaknesses:paintwork looks great, but chipped and worn in usual places quickly, however uk importers promptly sent out some touch up paint so cannot complain about the back up
Similar Products Used:previous mtb dawes tamarak, also had fully rigid specialized hardrock, and carrera katmandu in the 1980s and 1990s. mtbs are still evolving and improving
Bike Setup:immediately added spd pedals, titanium skewers and selle italia pro link saddle otherwise standard spec
Bottom Line:since buying the cindercone my confidence and ability have grown enormously, much thanks to the quality forks but helped also by light weight and other quality components. initially i thought the bars were too wide but a recent mtb marathon after a week of heavy rain in the area created lots of thick rutted mud, the width gave the leverage to remain in control of the bike.
far faster, more responsive and confident than anything else i have ridden off road, great for up to three hours after which i recommend a full susser, next bike may be a kona kahuna deluxe 2003, mostly the same equipment as the cindercone but with that rear suspension.
if you want a quality hard tail without breaking the bank you cannot be far off with the cindercone

Strengths:Solid frame, good components, Marz Bomber fork!!! Good bike for the buck. Holds up after hard spills. :-)
Weaknesses:pedals, 9-speed rear gets a bit quirky at times when shifting on trail. seat wasn't terrible, but wasn't comfy either - had to go.
Similar Products Used:fisher, specialized, jamis, raleigh, giant - all different hardtail models
Bike Setup:pretty much standard. added spd pedals and have played around with the stem setup. new seat too. might mess more with the stem and riser bar might go.
Bottom Line:solid bike. nice quality for the price. good for trail use. not an amazing downhill bike, but that isn't for me anyways! does everything i need it to do.

had it for a year now and no real problems. has taken some HARD spills with me and has stood up steady. marzocchi fork is awesome and takes almost everything the trail dishes out. much better with the spd pedals and new seat.

bottom line is to ride a bunch of bikes before you buy. this was the best for me out of the 8-10 that i rode. find your bike and find a great local shop. here in chattanooga, head to suck creek cycle - the folks there are friendly, know what they're doing, and really just want to help you out. enjoy!

Strengths:Looks and rides great. A lot of bike for the price. Handles great on the hills and is nice and light. I think for the price the components are a pretty good value. I am moving over from an old heavy mountain bike to this one and it is phenominal. Not a huge fan of dual suspension - this is the way to go.
Weaknesses:Seat and Pedals. Seat is way to stiff and hard. I didn't even use the pedals. Switched to a pair of Shimano Pedals. Took out the shifter and derailer on the first spill but got them up and working again.

Purchased At:Deep Cove Bikes
Strengths:Great looking bike, well built, with quality components for the price. Similar priced bikes seemed to have weaker components.
Weaknesses:I had the dealer change the seat before purchase after reading reviews from this site. The pedals are a little "cheap" compared to the other components used.
Similar Products Used:Tried out a Rocky Mountain Trailhead, Brodie
Bike Setup:Dealer upgraded front shocks to Bombers with 4" travel. Switched to a beefier SDG saddle.
Bottom Line:I "love" riding this bike! Frankly, it's more bike than I need as I'm just a recreational rider. But I wanted a quality product with great value that will suit me as I get more serious. Strengths:Awesome frame. Front shock work's great, IMO better than Rock Shox. Very nice bike for the price.
Weaknesses:THE SEAT! OMG the seat has to go! Heed our warning's! The pedals are junk, tossed them before I got home. Other than that, this bike is wicked nice.
Similar Products Used:Have only ridden friends MTB's. I'm fresh outta BMX. Decided to start MTB because I was getting to old for little old 20" frames. Some of my friends bikes are Cannondale F300, Santa Cruz Bullit(sp) and a Specialized Stumpjumper.
Bike Setup:All stock except for S&M platform pedals off my old 20", Koobi PRS saddle and a Cateye Enduro 2 computer.
Bottom Line:If you are looking for a nice middle of the road mountain bike at a reasonable price, check out the Kona's. For the value rating, I gave it 5 chili's, IMO you can't find a better bike for the price. For overall rating I gave it 4 chili's. Strengths:This is a great bike. The frame is great and the components are the best you can get for the price. Trust me, I looked at almost every bike in the price range and nothing compared.
Weaknesses:The handlebars are too long, I removed about an inch on each side. Also the seat is the worst I've ever seen, your ass is going to hurt A LOT after a while.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M600, Kona Blast
Bike Setup:Everything is stock, except for the seat, which I replaced with a Specialized gel (US$30). I also cut the handlebars because they were too long.
Bottom Line:This is the best you can get for the price. I shopped around and I couldn't find a better value. The frame is extremeley upgradeable although the components are very good, so you won't be upgrading much in a long time. If you just change the seat the bike cannot be beat.
Compare it with similar priced Cannondale, Specialized or Gary Fisher... the Kona Cindercone beats them all.

Trust me, this is the best bike around $700 - $800. You will love it.

I bought it from a friend (the 2001 model), he used it for about 6 months and I've been using it for the same time and it has never failed.

Strengths:Nice solid frame and not a bad component spec. for the price. Marzocchi Bomber EXR are nice to see and the groupset mix seems ok for the price. UK price of £700.
Weaknesses:Saddle. Enough said. Didn't seem to get as much stopping power as I would like from the Avid cantis on nasty downhill bits.
Similar Products Used:Specialised Hardrock, Giant XTC 860
Bike Setup:Pretty well as stock, but now with Specialized body geometry saddle (had to), USE Alien shock-post and Magura Louise disc brakes and Mavic X317 rims on Deore hubs.Oh, and some SPD's. Not too much wrong with the original bits- just personal preference.
Bottom Line:Superb frame for what it is. Not the lightest in it's class but by no means the heaviest. Basic setup would suit people who like a tight technical bike. Nice for woodland trails, and I haven't noticed the flex in the Truvativ cranks that the British MTB press seem to moan about. Pretty good for all-round X-Country, and good value too.

Strengths:I just had my break-in ride on the new Kona and I am completely stoked about everything important involving the quality and performance of this bike. I love the geometry; it maneuvers quick but surefootedly and downhills like a runaway lazy-boy. The Bomber fork is so generous. My shorter legs like the slopey top bar. You can really muscle it around/through things and it's pretty forgiving when you F up. Maliblue is a wonderful colour. FREE LIFETIME SERVICE & TUNE UPS.
Weaknesses:My ass hurts so badly right now. Do yourself a favor and replace the seat before it even leaves the shop. Burn the old one or use it for a creative project. The grips overdo the 'Old Glory' scheme of the Cindercone. I like them softer too. The handlebar is sortof wide and the pedal clips are going to break I just know it. Did I mention the Seat? ouch.
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain Trailhead
Bike Setup:Stock for now.
Bottom Line:100% glad about my purchase.

You lost 1 chili cuzza my ass. (burns on the way in...)
Definitely losing the saddle like tomorrow. New tyres when I break down for them. This ride will be worth the disc brakes when they come along too. Bike sport gives you Free Lifetime Service & Tuneups!! Plus the heads there are good people.

I shopped around and researched quite a bit on this one and I think that for this price, you can't beat the Cindercone.

Bottom Line:For those who don't expect much from this baby, go for it. At 700 bucks, this is a very good bike. The look and the finishing is great. Furthermore this baby handles all types of terrains well. Quite agile and responsive. Overall - worth your $$$ !

Strengths:One tough bike for the price. I just keep crashing and it just keeps going. Crashing cause I'm having too much fun going for it and you should too if your lookng for a great bike. The Marzocchi front shock is worth the extra weight.
Weaknesses:Kept bending Mavic 138 rims, but they are great now that the bike is broken in.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Stumpjumper
Bike Setup:Stiff for the city / little softer for the trails
Bottom Line:Great entry level bike. I would recommend this bike to anyone, it's great in the city and in the dirt.

Favorite Trail:Too many to name =P
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Pauls Sports
Strengths:The bike was excellent in climbing, Bomber fork held up great over many types of terrain.
Weaknesses:I found the rims to be a bit on the weak side (Either that or I was just too hard on them), and the pedals were annoying. Other than that, the bike held up great!
Bike Setup:Stock, with Sun Rim Rhino Lite rims (XT rear hub, Diore front), and new pedals
Bottom Line:Bottom line is, this bike was a GREAT buy. Bang for the buck, it definately ranks up there. It was perfect for climbing, XC, and if you were good enough, yes, it would hold up under DH racing (Don't expect to place well though)

Unfortulately had it stolen from me a month ago :( Checking out Kona Stuff now :)

Favorite Trail:Blackdown
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Les Wilkins
Strengths:Handling, feedback, sheer dependability, it just keeps on going
Weaknesses:The original tyres were not much good in the mud, but great on dryer trails. This was eaily sorted.
Rockshox forks are OK, but just don't seem to sparkle.
Bike Setup:Basicly as it came out of the box, but now has an 85mm stem, riser bars, bar ends, SPD's, wheels changed after rim wear got too much, now run XT/LX hub and mavic 517.
Bottom Line:May not be the most exciting bike out there, but if you want a bike to just keep going here it is. I take part in events which involve 5 hours of riding, so it has to be dependable.
Could be better if it were lighter, and now I would go for rear suspension.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Amazing package. Best bike by far that you can buy for around $1100 Canadian. Awesome ride quality, Marzocchi fork is very smooth, component group can not be beat. Kona has really nailed this price point. I shopped around for a long time and this bike reigned supreme.
Weaknesses:none to mention
Bottom Line:If you want a bike that has amazing value, a great setup and a fast bike to keep up with the pack under 1000 CAN then this is the bike. Nothing I feel I would change about it.. More then happy with my purchase
