Favorite Trail:LG
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1300.00
Purchased At:Livermore Cyclery
Strengths:Light, stiff and light. I think I have it down to 23Lbs without breaking the bank. Super fast XC bike. Still a great paint job.
Weaknesses:The components it came with were average. I have replaced almost everything. The Manitou SX forks are average.
Similar Products Used:Other LX equipped bikes.
Bike Setup:Chris King headset, Bontrager Ti Crowbars, Cook Brothers E cranks, XTR components, Ringle Zooka stem, Ringle Moby post, Avid V brakes, Nuke Proof carbon hubs and Crank Bros Mallet pedals
Bottom Line:Even though this is a post Trek Klein, it is still a fantastic Klein. This is my third Klein and I would be hard pressed to tell the difference in ride quality between them all. It is a very light yet stiff bike. Made in the USA, can't go wrong with that.

Price Paid: $1300.00
Strengths:Light, strong, stiff and with a beautifull paint.
Weaknesses:Icon cranks sucks, caused me several chain sucks and doesn't work in combination with LX front derailleur. Replaced it for a Truvative-crank which is much better. Bike has a hard tail.
Similar Products Used:No-name LX bike
Bike Setup:I've changed the Manitou SX fork for a Manitou SX-R; also replaced the stem for a BBB stem with an angle of 5 degrees
Bottom Line:Good bike with a beautifull frame and nice (but no state-of-art)components. Don't buy it for more then $1300.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Lighting Cycles
Strengths:Super fit and finish, plush ride for an aluminum hardtail, gets better with age. Don't forget the "drop dead" gorgeous paint job Klein puts on a bike!
Weaknesses:Are you kidding me??
Similar Products Used:Fishers, Wheeler
Bike Setup:XTR F&R deraillers, XT shifters and crankset, XTR V-brakes w/ Avid Mag levers, Mavic X-Ride w/WTB MutanoRaptors, Duke XC fork, Bontrager Comp stem and Answer Pro-Taper bars. Oh yeah, don't forget the SDG saddle that I bought out of the bargain basket at the cycle shop (cheap but sweet!)
Bottom Line:I reveiwed this bike earlier but since I have greatly upgraded this machine. What began as a $300 frame set has now evolved into a near $1800 labor of love. The love affair has not ended. I did get a wild hair just befor Christmas and I put the bike up for sale at the local shop where I bought the frame. I didn't sleep good for the entire weekend and was at the shop early the next day it was opened and brought "Baby" back home. This bike has proven to be beyond awesome. It has never let me down. I said before and I'll say it again, riding this bike is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!! This is the perfect bike for the hardtail purist. Don't buy this bike if your a "hucker". After all, you wouldn't take at Rolls Royce to a demmolition derby, even if it is able to meet the challenge.

Purchased At:Cycle Path Bike Shop in Alabama
Strengths:The Rolf Wheels and Hubs! The Frame and its internal sloping design that is on most Kleins. This bike peformes so well even at higher speeds closer to 40 or 45 MPH.
Weaknesses:All The Bontrager stuff although it works well. I just dont care for it because i am about to have to replace some of it and i just got the bike in Dec 01. Somthing makes a chirping sound but it doesnt effect the performance. It just bothers me so i am going to replace it. There really isnt anything bad on the bike it is just my personal preference.
Similar Products Used:This is my first MTB Bike. Wanted to start with a good one and find one on sale that was awesome!
Bike Setup:I have the 2001 attitude Comp. It is similar to the 00. I have Rolf wheels and hubs.(These came stock) XT Rear derailleur, LX front Derailleur and shifer/brake combos. Bontrager stem, handlebars, seatpost, saddle, crankset, tires. Shimano UN-50 BB. Bontrager grips. I will upgrade most of this soon except for the wheels and hubs because i am about to start racing.
Bottom Line:If this is your first bike or not it is an awesome one to go with. I got it for so cheap because it was a year end sale and the manager said he rode it once and didnt like it. I LOVE IT. I dont know what he didnt like but i was happy to get it at half price! Even if you have to pay full price it is worth it! If you are looking to buy a hardtail bike buy a klein! i woouldnt spend the money if i was just going to ride it on the rode around town. It does perform well on the rode too, but i would save the money. It doesnt make since to buy an off-road bike and use it on the road or paved trail only. I recommend it as a racing bike or as an off-road bike just for fun. Buy it if you are serious about off-road riding.

Bottom Line:This has got to be the closest thing to the perfect bike I have ridden. I've owned two Fishers, and I've tested about everything out there between $1300 and $2000. Nothing comes close to this bike. I guess if I have anything to complain about it is the number of bugs I get on my teeth when I ride with this big smile on my face. Riding has always been fun, now it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Wilmington , DE
Strengths:- fast, responsive, climbs great, handles turns well.
- the bike is predictable.
- not a reason to buy a bike, but exceptional paint job.
Weaknesses:- Chain Suck, first day of riding, problems with Icon Crank set. Read other reviews and this was the first thing I replaced, went to Shimano LX and problem with chain suck was resolved.
- Not to happy with pedals, tough to get into and tougher to get out. Will replace them next.
Similar Products Used:- Hard Rock with Rock Shox Fork.
Bike Setup:Stock 2000 Klein Attitude Comp with upgraded cranks and bottom bracket to Shimano LX.
Bottom Line:I only had $550 to spend. I was going to purchase a 2002 Trek 4900 and I saw this severly discounted 2000 Klein Attitude Comp leftover hanging on a hook looking for a home. I knew of Klein's reputation in the Road Bike arena, so I decided to spend the extra $50. Actually there was no comparision between an Attitude Comp and a Trek 4900. I am totally pleased. I was able to upgrade the cranks for $125, so I only have about $750 into this bike. I have ridden it almost everyday for the past 3 months, mostly single track, with very little fatigue. This bike is a pure pleasure to own and ride.

The bike is fast and builds confidence with each ride. You just have to aim the bike and it goes. Climbs are an ease. If I didn't have the problems with Chain Suck I would have given it 5 Chilis, but you can't beat the value.

Price Paid: $1200.00
Purchased At:Paul's Parts
Strengths:The bike is light, fast, and mean on handling. The ride is sheer bliss both on and off road.
Weaknesses:I had to swap the pedal out for some new ones that would grip better. I also bought a Rock Shox seat post and had to buy a shim to make the post fit. I really wish someone would come up with a universal size for after market products. I swaped out the tires for Michelin slicks so I can jet around campus easier.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale
Bottom Line:The changes I made to the bike was personal and not becasue I thought the components were bad. It is one of the stoutest bikes I've owned and I am very pleased. I would recommend the bike to anyone, and would also recommend a good lock if you want to keep it from being stolen. My wife has the exact same bike and she sings praises all day long while she zips around all the other yahoos who cannot keep pace with her. The Klein Attitude Comp is an excellent bike!!!

Submitted by Martijn a Cross Country Rider from Netherlands
Date Reviewed: September 24, 2001
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1400.00
Strengths:- Frame: very stiff, makes it accelerate fast, less effort needed when climbing, handles brilliantly
- Saddle: very comfortable but not too soft, no troubles at all after 3+ hour rides.
Weaknesses:- Replaced the chain immediately because of previous experience with Shimano chains
- Front derailler isn't porperly set-up, needs tuning
- Stock Bontrager tires not suitable for muddy Dutch conditions
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper Comp FS, size XL (2.5yrs)
Bike Setup:Size L; Stock, except chain: SRAM PC89R, brakes: Magura HS33, shifters: Deore, tires: Schwalbe Big Jim, added Cane Creek Ergo bar-ends
Bottom Line:Compared to my previous bike (the Rockhopper), it's a whole new world. It has a different geometry; my head is now nearly over the riserbar instead of halfway over the top tube. It therefore corners much better, allowing me to ride much tighter lines. Climbing is made easier, also due to easier shifting (apart from the fact that I cannot currently use the granny ring due to the faulty front derailler set-up). I've noticed I can ride longer with less effort on this bike than before. It does need a completely different approach when riding through mud. The Rockhopper just wanted to go straight ahead, so racing through mud was comparatively easy. The Klein is more nervous and needs to be pushed straight ahead. It took some getting used to, but it is not a weakness.
The non-stock brakes and bar-ends are both winners, see separate reviews for those.
So far, I have not noticed any chain suck as reported by others, and I really like the saddle.
The Manitou fork is still in its break-in period and is a bit too soft as yet, but that is tunable once it's been broken in.
Basically, if you want a quick-handling XC bike, take a look at this Klein.
For first impressions after three weeks use, there's nothing wrong with my riding which can be attributed to the bike. So there's just one possible overall verdict: 5!

Purchased At:Trail Blazers Cycles
Strengths:-Great Frame
-Bontrager Superstock Wheels are decent
-Amazing Paint Job
Weaknesses:-CRAPPY COMPONENTS!!!!!!!
-Icon Onyx stuff SUCKS!!
-The seat post grooves make the saddle shift and thus get rounded off and starts slipping all the time.
- Bontrager pedals do a medeocre job of keeping you clipped in.
-The chain suck guard bent my chain. Klein needs to include better instructions about how to place it.
-Manitou SX fork is just plain horrible.

Bike Setup:Stock except for Race Face XS Splined BB and Truvativ Stylo Team
Bottom Line:Klein make good frames. Period. But their good frames make up much of the purchasing price which means that they have to spec it with crappy stuff (Icon, Manitou SX, ect). The frame is incredibly rigid for it's weight, very strong too, I've gone off of some 2 - 3 foot drops on this frame (which is a lot for a frame that only weighs 3.1 pounds). Whe I bought it though, like many others, I was mainly into it because of the frame. I plan on bringing the total weight down to 22lbs.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:Sport Swap, Toronto
Strengths:-amazing climbing and handling
-hellishly fast
-Light but not 'too light' where parts start to fail.
-Frame is a keeper, so it is worth it to upgrade components as your wallet allows.
-bike setup has drivetrain working like a top Swiss watch.
-Beautiful paint job that the ladies love. Life is too short to ride a boring bike! This thing is like a piece of art.
-I've wanted one of these for years, and I'm glad they got rid of the proprietary headset and BB they had for a while.
Weaknesses:-paint may chip more than some, but not bad so far.
-some other bikes may have better component spec for the same price, but don't forget the Klein frame is where the money is on this bike.
-uncomfortable saddle exasperates the stiff oversize-aluminum frame
-don't even think about locking this bike up anywhere! It can turn heads for the wrong reason as well.
Similar Products Used:Handbuilt steel hardtail, Specialized Stumpjumper, Trek, Gary Fisher, Cannondale CAAD 3 (my god-it flexes visibly!), Rocky Mountain
Bike Setup:WTB Y2K SST ti saddle, 2.1" Bontrager Revolt and Jones tires, Race Face handlebar, stem.
Bottom Line:This is the last hardtail I will need to own. This bike is built for fast XC riding, and does it very, very well. (I think it must have a motor hidden inside somewhere!) It really has improved my riding, the shock works well for the price, and the whole bike is great for singletrack where you have to be able to flick the bike back and forth quickly. I used to hate climbs, but the frame is so stiff and light that they are a breeze. I could scarcely be happier. Frankly, there is no need to spend more money on a bike like this unless you are a pro racer. However, if you are a freerider or bike abuser, you shouldn't be buying a lightweight bike like this. Instead, go check my review of the Kona Stinky instead.

Bottom Line:Other than the crankset, this bike ROCKS!!! The first real XC ride, I taco-ed the middle ring just climbing a small hill. The guys at the LBS mounted it on the shop wall. They gave me a loaner crankset, we'll have to see if Klein/Trek will hook up a truvativ.
This is by far one of the fastest singletrack bikes i have ever ridden. I can't say enough about the frame, that's really what I bought the bike for. Replace this crank as soon as you can.

Weaknesses:there aren´t any, well yes: everyone wants one...
Similar Products Used:Marin Indian Fire Trail, Gary Fisher Procaliber... well, that´s another category :)
Bike Setup:Stock setup (XT/LX, Icon parts, Bontrager parts). I´ve changed the original stem and took a Ritchey (100mm, 90 degrees). This shorter stem suites my riding style perfectly. It´s like riding the Genesis geometry (Fisher).
Bottom Line:It´s quite a perfect bike. I do Transalp every year (crossing the Alps from north to the south, takes about a week, just great) and so I deserve a light but very strong and rigid bike which will never never never leave me alone. I´ve found finally the ultimate bike for that purpose. Some say the frame is too rigid; I don´t agree with those softies. A KLEIN is a KLEIN is a KLEIN... got the message?

Bottom Line:I got the bike for $950 (a steal... used the money I saved on a new helmet and some shorts) the longer travel (73mm) on the manitou gives the bike a funny angle makes the front tire pop while climbing but after I adjusted I would not change it. the tires suck in the mud and the thinner rims mean thinner tubes mean more flats. the 21.5 inch frame fits like a glove. I can feel every bit of energy i put into the bike coming out. Its a great, fast ride. I'll probibly go new rims/tires, new crack set, new shifters in that order as far as up grades go. if you live in rva agee's shop guys suck they did a horrible assembly job. (the seat post striped on my first ride because the clap wasn't put on tight.) service after the sale is weak. if you buy it from them take to ed in asland for repairs. it could drop a little weight

I was originally thinking about getting a road bike, because that's my main interest, but then the guy at the store said, "Hey, why not go for a mountain bike? You can take it pretty much anywhere, and you may even try some serious trail riding." He couldn't have been more right. Strengths:Fast, Fast, Fast. The lightning quick handling makes this bike confidence inspiring in the tight, fast stuff... hell, everywhere. The difference in speed between my Fisher and this bike is astounding. Solid component set. Aerodynamic internal cable routing.
Weaknesses:Oww, my butt hurts... ever so slightly twitchy on high speed descents... homely cranks... maybe the aerodynamic cable routing design is good for looks only... Jamaican Gold paint?
Similar Products Used:Many.
Bike Setup:Easton CT2 carbon bar, Titec carbon bar ends, Easton Mag stem, Rolf wheels, Moxey Pro suspension seat post, Time ATAC pedals (as close to perfection of any bike component as is possible), and last but not least, I just had to get the Salsa Rasta skewers to go with the paint job, in name if nothing else.
Bottom Line:I've ridden this bike for about a year and a half and my skilz have increased dramatically with this bike, especially during the first six months. It's enough to make me wonder if it's the bike or me. In the hilly trails around NC this bike is about perfect: quick to climb and fast everywhere else.

For my setup the front wheel comes up off the ground a little too easily on climbs but this is far, far outweighed by the fact that the bike is as rock stable on steep, slow descents. The ride is a bit harsh on the larger among us (6'2" 210 lbs) so I got a Moxey Pro to take the edge off of the sharper hits.

Since the bike has a short wheelbase, I'm surprised I haven't had more of a problem with instability. No matter if I'm trying to get air over a power line hill at 30+ mph or trying to see how far I can jump a mound of dirt next to a greenway, I've never had more than a little twitch from this trusty steed. Once I got used to this aspect I had no fears with really pushing this bike. It's clear this is a well designed, well thought out and finely manufactured work of art.

This bike is a Porsche among Ford Escorts. Five turds afire!

Bottom Line:I actually have the 2001 model. I'm still breaking it in, but have enjoyed every ride so far. I ride in the hills, and this bike has proven to be a great climber. The frame is so nice that I throw my body between the ground and the bike when I crash. I also have no complaints so far with the Rolf Dolomite wheel set. They are very light and so far seem strong enough. These wheels were why I got the Comp instead of just the Attitude model.

First thing I replaced was the tires. The stock ones were wimpy. I'll eventually get around to replacing the brake levers and shifters and the handlebars with my Scott AT-2. There is room to lighten this bike up some more by replacing some of the lower end components.

One of my riding partners has had his Klein for years with no complaints. I plan on keeping this one for a long time.

or should I get those michelins hot s? Have yuo bikers try'em?
in all I am very happy with my attitude. in the future I can see a set of cross maxs as well and of course, and presto, a selle italia trans am flite saddle.

Favorite Trail:Chicopee Woods, Bull Mtn
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Peachtree Bikes
Strengths:Beautiful frame welds and internal cable routing. Absolutely beautiful paint job. Stiff bottom bracket and frame, but still extremely comfortable. Very light!!
Weaknesses:None, except the paint is so nicely done you hate to see it get scratched, but hey I guess if you're riding hard it's going to get scratched.
Similar Products Used:This bike replaced my worn out Specialized Stumjumper. When I was shopping for this bike I also test rode: Trek 8000, Gary Fisher Mt.Tam, a couple Cannondale's, and new Stumjumper's.
Bike Setup:My bike is actually a 2001 model which has a lot of changes from the 2000, plus what I've done. Besides the awesome paint job, which is a dark and light gray fade, Klein changed the wheelset to Rolf Dolomites which are awesome, the cranks to Bontrager Race, and the seatpost, handlebars and stem are all Bontrager now instead of Onyx(not sure if there's really much difference in them though), and they added a replaceable derailler hanger which is very nice. They also upgraded the fork to the Manitou SX-R, but I changed that out to a MARS which took off about 1/2lb. I also upgraded the brakes to Avid Arch Rivals that stop on a dime. I've changed the pedals to Ritchey's with titanium spindles, and the saddle to a Flite Ti. After everything I've done, this bike weighs a scant 23lbs!!!
Bottom Line:It is a little more money than other stock production bikes equipped the same or similar, but for the money this is one hell of a sweet riding bike. Although I've only owned it for a couple of weeks, I've been riding almost every day despite the fact that it's cold wet and slushy in Georgia right now. This bike truly climbs like a mtn goat on steroids. On long climbs that I used to work hard in the smallest gear on my old bike, I just cruise right up on this bike. Since it's been wet every day I've ridden this bike I really haven't gotten a true feel of exactly how awesome it will be, but from what I've seen in the wet this thing is unbelievable. The only complaint with this bike is the tires it comes with (Bontrager Revolt) pretty much suck in the mud. I put Bontrager Jones on for mud and they work great, and I'm sure the Revolts will be great in the dry summer months here.

Weaknesses:super thin tubes underrated for the stock tires.
Similar Products Used:specialized
Bike Setup:SST titanium saddle, Specialized town & country tires with new tubes rated for the tire size.
Bottom Line:This is the fastest bike I have ever ridden. The frame and Ride quality are in a class by itself. A tip for victims of chain suck: my bike was delivered from the dealer with the chain suck gaurd mounted on the bottom of the bottom bracket out of adjustment, leaving me with the experience of just how little torque is required when shifting up hill to wrap your chain around the bottom bracket and chain stay. Before you ride your new Klein, adjust your chain suck gaurd as close to the chain rings as possible to allow the gard to stop the chain from sawing into your new bike in the unlikely event of chain suck. This bike was purchased for urban assult in Seattle.

Price Paid: $995.00
Strengths:This bike is a real machine. It climbs with little effort and can maintain a solid pace easily. It feels right at home on the hardpack.
Weaknesses:I haven't owned it long enough to bring out any weaknesses. The rear brake was installed improperly at the dealership and a drag resulted but that's not on Klein.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Stumpjumper, Schwinn Homegrown, Trek 8000
Bike Setup:Thus far it's stock although the frame is the same on the Attitude Race so an upgrade of components will give it a boost.
Bottom Line:In the short period I have ridden the bike the quality really shows through. The frame is incredible with the smooth proprietary welds, lightweight 25.25 lbs, and beautiful paint- Jamaican gold colorwash. Components are XT and LX. I weigh 208 lbs and am 6-1 and the large frame fits like a glove with the stock stem and seat. The bike likes to sprint and can take a good jarring without becoming unsettled. Once I tweak it and get it all dialed in I'll give it a real workout and re-submit a review. So far it's looking good.

Strengths:For the price you will be hard pressed to find a better frame.Yes the paint is nice. Certainly is a joy to grind up a steep hill with.
Weaknesses:The cable guide for my rear brakes came loose where it enters the top tube, so for the summer I have just been riding with it zip tied along the outside of the top tube. I will have to bug my LBS to fix it properly if I ever stop riding it all the time
Similar Products Used:Marin, Trek, GT, Rocky Mountain, Kona, Cove (rules)
Bike Setup:Stock, LX has performed well considering the price, I will upgrade the BB, headset, and crankset(Race Face or XTR) this fall. You should really ride the parts it comes with until they break, there is nothing wrong with them. P.S. Bontranger has a customer for life now, Keith's wheels are awesome and they are not made by French weenies.
Bottom Line:Considering the workmanship on the frame, the Klein is a great investment. Yes the paint chips but you don't ride on paint. I have had no real chain suck problems, even here on the very wet and muddy North Shore. The Attitude is best for singletrack, climbing and the occasional knarly rooted rutted downhill. Don't whine if your loves are freeriding and urban assault you shouldn't have bought this as your only bike. Buy a @#$% Cove Stiffie like I have for bombing.

Strengths:Beautiful frame. Best climbing capabilities I,ve ever experienced. Fast and nimble. Internal cable routing.

Bottom Line:A great bike at an affordable price. The individual components may not be top notch but they do their job. Anyway the most important piece of a bike is the frame. And this frame is absolutely in the top league.
At first I was'nt to happy with the Manitou SX forks, as I felt they were a bit mushy for my size and weight (210 lbs)
but I've actually begun to like them. I miss the lockout screws though.

Strengths:What can you say, it is a Klein! The frame is an outstanding piece of craftsmanship, almost a work of art. Beautiful paint job and welds. Most of the components are well thought out for a bike in this price range, and work pretty good. Having an outstanding bike shop provide you with the service that represents Klien well is also a major plus!
Weaknesses:Seat! I mostly race and the seat just felt uncomfortable. Not the bike's fault, just personal pref.
Similar Products Used:Specialized
Bike Setup:Stock - so far.
Bottom Line:After reading the reviews below, I must say that most of the problems experienced were from rider error. I have never experienced chain suck, and probably never will. Poor riding technique should not be the cause of a bad bike review. Aside from all of that, the bike is wonderful. It does not let you down in any situation, and if properly maintained, will last a long time even under heavy use. One day soon I will upgrade components, but for now it all works well. If you can put the hammer down, this bike will place ALL that effort into the rear wheel.

Most people griped about the tires that came with the bike, but here in the dry and dusty South, the tires work pretty well for most situations. I do agree that in muddy/wet conditions they should go. If you are looking for a quality ride, for a great price, then buy it! Everytime you climb on, you will love those guys in Washington who sweated for 21 days to build you THE perfect frame! Definately 5 marks!

If you want to be able to rip turns & accelerate, buy it. Gold/orange paint looks better in the sun than indoors - as it should! Weaknesses:Inferior components although for the price of this KLEIN you have to expect to upgrade the components (pretty much all of them). The manitou shock is ok but a little mushy. Color scheme is McD's, probably their worst, first thing I did was slap a mac apple on the K.

Strengths:I thought that I was purchasing a quality frame from a quality manufacturer.
Weaknesses:Where should I begin. First, after riding the bike for only two hours, I experienced chain suck that riped up my chain stay. After cleaning the bike off, noticed a 3/4" dent on the down tube. Took back to the bike shop to show them the dent, which by the way was concelled under the air pump, they informed that it probably occured at the factory. With that in mind, I requested that they send it back to Klein for replacement or repair, which the bike shop said no. After riding two more times, brought back to bike shop to replace a frozen knob on the shock, which broke off. Again, my concern was to have the frame repaired and willing to pay for it. But again, bike shopped said dent occured at factory and that Klein warrants their frame for a lifetime. Well I rode the bike 5 times, in the shop three, last time busted chain, and bend dropout.

Weaknesses:LX front D. feels kinda sloppy. One episode of chainsuck.
Similar Products Used:Tested Specialized, Gary Fisher
Bike Setup:Stock, although would like to get all xt drivetrain.
Bottom Line:This bike feels way lighter than it actually is. I've ridden up things that were so steep, others were afraid to ride down 'em. I KNOW that was the bike that took me up there, not my skill or anything. The steering is so light, so precise, that you just have to THINK where you want the front wheel to go- It'll go there. Every tiny bit of power gets delivered to the rear wheel to practically throw you up singletrack and technical stuff.

I don't get any OTB feelings during steep downhills, (even though I went OTB plenty of times!) I was a bit worried about the frame's ability to hold up to abuse, but after loads of crashes , missed attempts, and general beating-up, there is not even a single dent anywhere. The paint's a bit scratched up, but I'm not a big fan of the McDonald's yellow/orange combo anyway.

I got one episode of chainsuck that ripped through the paint and a layer of aluminum on the chainstay, but that was about it. The front derailleur takes it's time shifting up- I'd go with an XT for another $50.

Bottom line, if you have the $1200, and you want a bike that'll (hopefully) last a lifetime, and want to ride something that just makes you look good, get this one. Great performance for the money. The others that I tested (Specialized, Gary Fisher) were nice, but just didn't measure up. FIVE FLAMING GRUBS FOR THE KLEIN!!

Suspension forks are new to me, so I'm still dialing in the Manitou. Works great so far. The components are adequate; no problems so far, except minor adjustments, but that's to be expected. No problems at all with chain suck. Brakes are outstanding, but I'm comparing them to 10-year old u-brake and XT cantilevers. Overall, I'm very happy w/this bike. Ideal buyer: someone who wants a handcrafted frame that'll last a lifetime, but doesn't thrash their bike every weekend; the LX-level components probably won't hold up to very hard abuse. Strengths:The beautiful paint job great frame the internal cables are awesome most beautiful bike I ever owned the frame is definitely worth upgrading later on.
Weaknesses:The brakes and the BB CHEEP for a 14 hundred dollar bike. The bike is almost too nice to ride off-road don't want to scratch that beautiful paint.
Bike Setup:just added bar ends
Bottom Line:Beautiful bike the frame is awesome I haven't had any trouble with the bike except for the brakes go out of adjustment easily and the bolts strip easily. I haven't had any trouble with the pedals I see that they had bad reviews but mine seemed to work just fine. I think they should of used a better bottom bracket the UN52 is kind of cheap they should of at least put a UN72. Haven't had ne trouble with the drivetrain. KLEIN definitely makes the best aluminum frame internal cables are great. The Bontrager Super-x Tires and SuperStock wheel sets great. I recommend ne1 who wants a beautiful bike that's worth upgraded later on and could race it stock buy it . I give it a 5.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Component selection, paint job, frame construction, internal cable routing
Weaknesses:Pedals, no bar ends
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Moab
Bike Setup:Titec Hell Bent bar, Bar ends, I know it's a crime but I went with cage pedals, Panaracer tires (need better knobbies here).
Bottom Line:Compared to the moab I was riding, this is a quick handling bike that I wish I was in better shape for. It almost seemed as though the bike wanted to accelerate up hill but I couldn't keep up with it. The Moab although a quality bike, was outclassed big time by this machine. I can't wait to take this bike to the limit! This is a quality, fun , fast machine to be on. This bike is hotter than 5 chillies!

Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Geometry, precise steering, Just feels good.
Weaknesses:brakes need too much attention, too often
Similar Products Used:Giant, Trek, Cannondale, Fisher in same price range
Bike Setup:stock, except for tires
Bottom Line:This bike handles as well as any out there. If you are used to riding a low-end bike it might take a while to adjust to the exceptionally precise steering. The Klien climbs and descends equally impressively, and definately deserve a test ride of you are thinking about purchasing a new bike.
When I hear about chainsuck problems I always question the shifting techniques of the rider before I blame the mechanism.
Bottom Line - this is a fun bike too ride anywhere, but especially on tight, twisty single track.
Save the trails......and the whales

Favorite Trail:Lashara trails
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Light frame, light wheels, great equipment for the money, fork supple without too much bouce, beautiful paint job!
Weaknesses:none so far
Similar Products Used:Spec Stumpjumper, Trek 8500, Trek STP 200, Trek Elite 9.8, Raleigh M800
Bike Setup:Stock with Rock shok seatpost
Bottom Line:This is a beautiful bike, both in ride and appearance. You almost don't want to take it cross country. It's very feels lighter than it is. All equipment works great. LX is better than expected. The frame is very clean with the internal wiring, nothing to get caught in the weeds during off road adventures. Three sets of braze-ons. The in house Icon equipment looks and works great. Bontrager wheels have little flex and are light and responsive. Tires are a nice compromise for getting to and from your favorite trail or around town. The Manitou SX is supple yet not bouncy, could be easier adjust. I replaced the stock SDG seat with a Selle Royal Lookin but changed it back after a few rides. This is a well built bike. I'm looking at their road bikes now, quality is out there if you know where to look. I give it 5 screaming chilis.

Favorite Trail:NCSU Cent. Campus
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Handling, low weight, climbing ability, internal cable routing, paint job, quality welds
Weaknesses:Tires, Revolt Super-X, semi-slicks are a poor choice for my area.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Stumpjumper, Giant XTC SE1, Trek 8500 & 8900
Bike Setup:Stock everything + ultralight tubes & LP Composite barends
Bottom Line:Handles extremly well in my opinion, haven't experienced the chainsuck problem described by the previous poster (not even once), would say that it is a perfect cross country bike except for the semi-slick tires that are just not cut out for NC forest rides. It's a Klien, which I think beats all other makes in quality. Bike price was non-negotable through Cycling Spoken Here in Cary but it was worth every thing I paid for it. Originally tried to get the Race model but delivery in XL was not available for several months. Only thing that I would have liked aabout the Race would be the more adjustable & lighter Mars C fork. The LX stuff is much better than anticipated.
