Bottom Line:Still turns a few heads, light and great climber, definitely old school but tyou have to love gary klein a guy way ahead of the curve in the 80's/90's. This bike was a XC amateur racer but kept in excellent condition, rider would wrap the frame to keep the scratches to a minimum. wish I had a 99 race carbon model

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1800.00
Purchased At:The Bike Shed, Barnstaple, UK
Strengths:Climbing, weight, durability, rear travel, looks
Weaknesses:Rear lifts up under braking but this is something that you get used to and counter by siting back.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro, Univega Ram 990, Marin Indian Fire Trail, Klein Pulse
Bike Setup:Stock plus riser bars
Bottom Line:This bike has served me well for 5 years now and is still going strong. I have done numerous enduros and cross country race on it. The thing is fantastic at anything offroad but especially climbing. Many times I have sailed past better riders on technical climbs due to the bikes traction and amazing ability to just ride over stuff. I couldn't recommend one highly enough.

Purchased At:bikes unlimited, mass.
Strengths:Gorgeous. Amazing climber. Super nimble. Fast. Tough as hell. Awesome clearance. Lightweight.
Weaknesses:Too Gorgeous- have to keep a close eye on it. Ive had to change out the pivot bearings after two seasons and since then, have had no play at all. Ghost shifting. Stiff rear end when braking downhill.
Similar Products Used:Trek hardtails.
Bike Setup:I bought the frame with fox shock and ICON seatpost- other than that it is a pricey custom- Reba shock, Magura hydraulic brakes, XT/XTR goods.... Carbon fiber bars.... yada yada yada...
Bottom Line:This bike has served me well. The dream bike I always wanted. Some jackasses tell me my ride is outdated or something but they cant keep up with me for a moment. The ghostshift is something ive learned to expect. As with the stiff braking. Ive adapted and we get along awesome. Er.... Got along- past tense..... I just cracked my frame by the rear dropout on the chain side.... Hoping for a replacement triangle..... or a Palomino frame, but no- Looks like they are going to put me on a Trek Fuel EX8- Awesome for a six year old well ridden rig replacement- but a bummer to have a mass produced machine..... Well see- Ive only heard awesome reveiews on the Fuel... See ya Klein. You shouldnt have sold out to the man.

Purchased At:www.mtbreview.com
Strengths:Great Components; graphite crankset, graphite seatpost, graphite handlebars etc... Fox FloatR and Manitou Mars 1. For a FS bike goes uphill very well, and absorbs the downhill very well with the Manitou Mars 1 front suspension.
Weaknesses:Some components a little brittle. This is probably just my bike, however i had a few caps snap off. But no real complaints
Bottom Line:This is a great bike, for any type of rider interested in a FS bike. It's very light, and works great no matter where you are, whether is XC or DH or just street riding and jumping and stuff. Light blue color is very stylish and always gets the attention of other riders, who will be at our mercy because you have such a kingly bike.

Strengths:Great on downhills. better on uphills, especially for a FS. Good stability. Bontrager wheelset, xtr rear derailure.
Weaknesses:Icon components. Some like the graphite cranks, but I think you could do better w/ a Truvativ stylo set. They don't make the model anymore.
Similar Products Used:specialized FS comp
Bike Setup:bontrager race lites, xtr rear, lx front, lx brakes and shifters. icon - cranks, handlebars, seat post. fox float r rear shock.
Bottom Line:Great ride. If you've had a subpar ride before, you will notice the difference on this bike. I felt much more confident and stable on the downhills, and was right on friends' rears as I used to lag 50 to 100 feet behind. The bike gave me a noticably positive difference, something I had been searching out for a couple years. I haven't had any problems w/ the shock like others have and I have a good local resource who will service it for cheap if it needs it. One problem was, initially, my rear derailure was not engaging. This was because the housing over the cable was too short, and when I sat on the bike, the cable would tighten to the point of disengaging the derailure. The problem was fixed for $10 and I've had no problems since.

Strengths:Climbing, XC...I love this bikes ability to "dig in" to your surrounding conditions - rock gardens, fast single track, logs, fire roads, street - I just find this bike combfortable to ride.
Weaknesses:Descending (especially steep inclines) takes finding your comfort level - I just drop the seat down alittle more that i used to...to keep the center of gravity closer to the pivot.
Similar Products Used:Switched from old GT hardtail
Bike Setup:Stock Mavic rims, stock Bontrager tires, Monkey lites (scrap the icon bars) Specialized seat (great upgrade!) the rest is stock.
Bottom Line:Love the bike, love the look! Has anyone out there switched over to disc brakes with this bike? Any suggestions/reviews on brakes and/or wheelsets for the upgrade drop me an email - Curious to see how it has performed.

Strengths:Great ride. Climbs like a champ, sucks up the bumps, just an all around great performer.
Weaknesses:some of the stock components are leaving something to be desired. particularly the icon graphite cranks.
Similar Products Used:serveral hardtails. this is my first fs.
Bike Setup:stock.
Bottom Line:I finally got this thing out on the trails yesterday. After my first loop, any worry about buying the wrong FS bike was erased. (Before my purchase, it was between the Mantra and a GF Joshua) The Mantra is awesome. A better climber than I am. Going through some pretty squirrely terrain the bike was with me the whole way. If I could've managed to turn off my brain and just pedal and point the bike in the direction I wanted to go, I would've never gone down. This thing just performs incredibly.

Strengths:It is bullit proof. However, when I first took my bike in for a 'tune up,' they said, Damn. What did you do to this thing?
I just rode it a little. What's the problem, Mr. Mechanic?
Anyway, I ride so much that I get a professional tune up between 4-6 weeks even though I take care of my machine at home too.
Weaknesses:None that other mountain bikes don't all have. (we love double negatives here in the South) Mud will kick your but here in Georgia. We don't really have just mud. Sometimes it's really wet clay.
Similar Products Used:None. And the other single pivot full suspension bikes are...?
Bike Setup:Stock. I'd love to have discs and I'd love to get the Carbon Race.
Bottom Line:Just a great machine. I love to be able to bomb down fire roads, trails, or street and some of the riders can pass me on the downs, but then I can pick off almost every single one of them on any climb.
After a few good hill climbs, I'm out front or in the "tete de la trail."

Strengths:plush when seated
climbs well when seated
low maintenance
Weaknesses:Many suspension quirks
poor descender
weight is OK, but not great
overpriced given component spec
Gradient tubing prone to dings and dents
Similar Products Used:Sugar, Titus LocoMoto
Bike Setup:'97 Mantra comp w/ Z3 Flylight 100, Cane Creek AD-10, risers... upgraded essentially every original component
Bottom Line:This is a parting review of the Matnra (After riding a Mantra for 2.5 years, I recently made the switch to a LocoMoto.) The Mantra climbs incredibly well, but there are other FS rigs that climb just as well (the Loco being one of them). Also, the ride is very plush when seated. However, there are so many suspension quirks that it takes awhile to get used to. The saddle height changes when you slide off the back for a technical descent, so its harder to get back on. Brake jack is noticeable even with full rebound dampening on the rear shock. There's a lot of bob when stomping on the pedals. Given the wheelbase changes when taking hits, the steep angles, and the brake jack effect, the bike is a mediocre descender. Weight is average for a FS bike- my medium weighed 27.5 lbs. The Loco is a far superior bike, IMHO. I can't really recommend the Mantra now, given all of the other choices out there

Strengths:Just wanted to give you the bottom line on replacing the bushings. I've had mine for 4 years and I replaced my bushings today. I should have done it a year ago, after noticing the side to side play. Check out the Klein website and notice the last pages of the 48 page tech manual. They describe how to do it in detail. IT IS NOT DIFFICULT, BUT YOU NEED THE PROPER TOOLS! Basically, you need a C-clamp (costs around $7 at a hardwear store). The operation is similar to pressing in a headset. I'm a bike mechanic, so it may seem easy to me, but may be difficult for others. Using a 1" headset cup remover is great, but you can get away with wacking out the parts with something else. The parts are soft aluminum, so if you use a screwdriver to push them out, you may deface the main pipe in there. MY BUSHINGS WERE F*CKED UP!!! The old bushings have a cut in them, why? I don't know. The teflon coating, similar to a frying pan, was completely worn down and shavings were inside the tube. Please contact Klein if you're rear end has developed play and they will probabely warranty them, if not, get them anyway. If you choose to replace them yourself, go for it, don't be scared. If not, pay a shop to do it.
Weaknesses:It weighs 26lbs.

Bottom Line:I love this thing. I've worked at several shops over the years and I've tried a lot of bikes. It's really comfortable and if you're strong, it's really fast. I weigh 130lbs and I have the bike set up specifically for me and it's great. I love the way the bike centers the rider, my riding position is perfect on this bike. I will probabely ride this bike for several more years, as long as it holds up.

Bottom Line:I have had the bike a year now. I stand by my review which I already posted, but I wanted to just mention something I found out about my bike, as it may be of interest to other Klein full suspension owners.

Towards the end of the season, my bike developed some play in the rear suspension pivot. I had a bike store look at it, and they told me that the bushings had worn.

It turns out that as the rear suspension bushings are teflon-impregnated, they do not need lubing. In fact, lubing the bushings actually causes them to break down, which is the cause of the problem on my bike. It would have been nice if the owners' manual had mentioned this, because lubing the rear suspension strikes me as a pretty reasonable thing to do if you are not told otherwise.

Moral of the story, do not lube your rear suspension pivot.

Fortunately, Klein is going to replace the parts under warranty, so the story does have a happy ending.

Strengths:Ride is is the most plush compared to others I've tested but not squishy. Don't have to get up off seat for cross country trials with big bumps and holes. Handling is excellent. This bike handles just as well as my Specialized hardtail on downhill tight single tracks but hurts a lot less afterwards (I'm 39 adn 155 lbs).
Relatively light weight (small frame) @ 26 lbs with seat pack full.
Weaknesses:Bounces a little initially at start of quick hard pedalling when standing off the seat but can be controlled easily once you learn how to ride it.
LX front derailleur should be an XT or XTR to match the rear.
Difficult to hang on my garage wall using standard bike holders.
Similar Products Used:I tested the Gary Fisher Sugar 2,3 the Specialized FSR comp and the GT XC3000.
Bike Setup:Manitou SX front, Fox Float Vanilla R rear, XTR rear derailleur, LX front, LX cranks and gears. Bontrager hubs and Bontrager Race tires. Bontrager pedals.
Bottom Line:Awesome bike! If you're in my age range (39) and can afford to spend the money to save your back and ass - buy this bike. The other bikes were a little stiffer and handled about the same. The Sugar 3 was more of a "rocket" but hey, I'm no racer. I love to ride and this bike makes riding even more fun and comfortable.

Strengths:What can I say, this bike is amazing! It climbs great, which is a concern I had when purchasing an FS bike, but it definitely climbs better than my old cannondale hardtail. The rear shock is plush, but toy with it to get it dialed in perect. The bike is light for FS too. Ooh, the color!
Weaknesses:Just a couple little personal preferences, swap the flat bar and grab a riser. For northwest riding, the tires are a bit smooth, but an easy swap out. I'm planning on grabbing a more comfy saddle too, but once again, all these are personal preferences and should detract in no way from purchasing the bike. One thing to be concerned about though: while test riding and on my first ride, the shifting was the worst I had ever experienced due to a short rear derailer cable housing (btwn. the boom and rear triangle)...watch out for that and have them switch it if you have a problem.

Bottom Line:If you want a full suspension bike, but haven't converted yet because you're scared of the weight or being hampered climbing, buy this bike. If you just want a smooth, comfortable, fast, plush ride, buy this bike. If you've tried the other bikes I've listed above and aren't completely satisified, buy this bike.

Bottom Line:Fox float R failed on second ride, replacement o.k. so far.
Mars fork drools at rebound knob.
"Spot-on" pivot became lose, dealer used locktight to "fix".
At 37yrs.and 210lbs. I was looking for a degree of comfort.
The comp.is that and more. Be shure to dial in plenty of rebound dampening in the rear to keep back end down when hitting front brakes. A little troublesome to carry because
of frame shape and cable routing under boom.
"KLEIN" tape lettering slightly crooked on frame.
Beautiful paint. Overall bike promises quality upon purchase
but actual use (at least at my weight) has resulted in a frequent looseness of componantry. If any of this sounds a bit negative let me assure you -this was a purchase from the heart and as such, no amount of quirks could detract from the genuine pleasure derived from clearing a technical

Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:No tellin!
Strengths:Light, massive, and no nonsense construction.
Weaknesses:Dumped the saddle before even sitting on it. Traded the shop for SPD's. The stock tires are a waste for typical So Cal terrain. I guess the Icon stuff is Okay, but I prefer polish instead of paint.
Similar Products Used:Got an old Bianchi cross bike
Bike Setup:Selle Itlia Flite Mythos, Shimano pedals, Icon carbon bar ends, Mars C upgraded fork
Bottom Line:I got hooked up in buying this bike and I love it. Coming from a thin lightweight cross bike it's burly, fat [I whack my knees on the pivot pretty often], and it takes hits. The geometry is so different from riding a cross bike I've had to totally change riding style and logic.
This purchase was to assist me in training UP our local mountain by taking the edge off riding down it and I've found it's best to optimize it for the down, not the up. It likes to ride fast. It'll chew up the hard stuff at high speed, at low speed it can play a nice strategic game but that's not what it's going to win at.
I find it climbs slightly slower than my light weight rig but descending is light years ahead. Climbing in the saddle it's responsive, out of the saddle it's almost as solid as a hard tail.

Strengths:Fast on singletrack and climbs--see previous review on April 28/00.
Weaknesses:External cable routing
Bike Setup:Gore-tex cables, lizard skins on front and rear shocks
Bottom Line:I posted a review in April after riding this bike for a month. Now I have had a chance to get more used to the bike, and get it set up properly, I could not be happier.

It's true, the more you ride this bike, the better it gets.

However, I have discovered a few minor glitches:

1. External cable routing along the bottom of the frame is not great. After a couple of really muddy rides, the shifting really got screwed up, due to mud on the gear cables. Gore-tex cables will take care of this, though.

2. Riding really rutty stuff causes the rear triangle to bob, and screws up your rhythm while pedalling. I guess that's going to be the same with any URT rear suspension bike.

However, all in all, I would consider this "the full suspension bike for people that don't like full suspension". It's fast on the singletrack like a hardtail, but climbs like a pissed off ape. 4.5 chilis.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Gary Klein's excellent design engineering and of course, the Mediterranean Blue paintjob!
Weaknesses:Nothing to complain about, so far.
Similar Products Used:Test drove most of the high-end FSBs before choosing the Mantra Comp (the Mantra Pro's even better, if you can afford the price). The Specialized FSR XC was the only real contender, but it's definitely not a Klein!
Bike Setup:Stock setup for now, but I plan to replace the Time ATAC clipless pedals (haven't decide which type, as yet) and add a set of bar ends.
Bottom Line:I've been riding road bikes for most of my life (Raleigh Grand Prix, Specialized M4 Road) and just started riding the trails about 3 months ago. Although I was told that the Mantra Comp is designed for the more seasoned mountain biker, I'd definitely recommended it to anyone...no matter what their skill level. This bike is fun to ride...anywhere and on any terrain!

I don't consider these weaknesses (just a few inconveniences), but the frame design makes it difficult to mount on most car racks unless you opt for a hitch mounted design that secures the bike by its wheels or forks. It's also difficult to mount a water bottle onto the frame. Since I've been riding my Mantra Comp practically everywhere (including the streets of Chicago), not having a kick stand is a little inconvenient when you want to park your bike and take break...haven't located one that's compatible with the Mantra.

Favorite Trail:Highland (I don't get out much)
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:balanced geometry, overbuilt signature tapered frame, decent ICON componentry [Trek origin](cranks, bar, stem)
Weaknesses:rear der. cables too short when sitting on bike causing unexpected shifting, just get LBS to install longer cables; recommend a water pack since the cage mount is useless where its located (few options available)
Similar Products Used:Cannondale Super V800, Gary Fisher Sugar 1&3, GT XCR 3000, K2 Disco Monkey
Bike Setup:Bontrager FS2000 seat, coda bar ends (may eliminate for an Easton riser), plan upgrades on front der. & shifter/levers (both to XTR)
Bottom Line:Trek's purchase of Klein a few years ago led to a misdirection at first. They believed Klein should compete with less expensive bikes. But they diluted quality when they moved production to Waterloo. Fortunately, Trek realized their error; Klein is a premium brand.
Now its back in Chehalis, Washington where the real Klein aluminum technicians work. And the Mantra Comp is an excellent example of this renewed dedication.

This goat has taken everything I've dished out and more. Very aggressive geometry excels in tight singletrack and is a challenge on the downhills (stay WAY back). This isn't a novice's bike.
I don't think another FS climbs better than this one. And it is fairly light. Time ATACs & XTR rear der. (why not at least XT on front, Gary?) are stock which is wonderful. Welds are overbuilt, not the polished Gradient tubing on the hardtails.

Watch out for suspension compression: my Fox Vanilla rear blew when I got it (a problem with the shock not the bike) but it was replaced quickly. I've had no problems with the Mars front but you may want to upgrade the componentry for a better rebound (see July 2K Mountain Bike mag for details or visit http://www.answerproducts.com/).

There may be some squeek from the frame pivot. It depends on the bike so pick one that doesn't. I've already bent the rear der. hanger twice (my fault: big wrecks; better that then the dropouts). Pretty quick fix but you may want to carry a spare on the trail (along with a Topeak Alien).

Through narrow wooden trails, dodging rocks and tree limbs, climbing hills laden with log crossings, spinning down boulder infested hills, flying through valleys or tearing down that rare piece of straightaway, I love it.
Considering the beating I've given this goat over the past three months, it rocks!

Similar Products Used:Tested Gary Fisher Sugar, Specialized FSR, looked at Cannondales and passed them by. The Klein was calling my name...
Bike Setup:Will upgrade bar to Easton Carbon riser, upgrade front der. to XT, etc, etc. Too many sweet products out there to leave this bike stock..
Bottom Line:Some may say this bike is odd looking but most dualies are.
All I know is that this bike rides as smooth as a Lexus and climbs like a Hummer. Go buy one and join the extremely proud KLEIN CLAN !!!

Strengths:Stiff, Stiff, fast accelerator,
Quick handler, cool looks
Weaknesses:weight, ????
Similar Products Used:Trek Y-22, C-dale Jekyll, Trek 9900, 9000, Specialized FSR, I have tested nearly everything.
Bike Setup:Stock, for now
Bottom Line:Great handling. Took it out for the first time last weekend, was impressed at how quickly the bike felt "right" Most of the reviewers who had problems with the bike are obviously setting it too soft. I discovered the rear shock needed to be set very high in order to prevent the suspension sagging on flat ground. At the right setting, the bike ate obstacles and was smooth in corners and does not dive under braking. I think too many people are dialing in some sag, which is not the best for a URT... I had to replace my Trek and would have with another Y, but got this instead. Nine speed is touchy, but I cannot remember riding a bike with such explosive acceleration before. This thing blasts out of corners. I also found that riding out of the saddle on downhills gives that perfect blend of "feel" for bumpy corners, and yet is still stiff for that great acceleration.. Went off a few medium sized drops at 25 mph, out of the saddle and the bike didn't even wiggle. The only downsides are weight (no way this is only 26 lbs) and a rattle somewhere.

Bottom line, great bike for hardcore singletracker, racer or big person (over 190) Durable, and quick .. Spend an hour setting it up and have the best of all worlds. Spend some money, and you should get the bike under 25 lbs real weight with decent parts that will last.

Favorite Trail:Any one with dirt on it.
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Great all-around trailbike
Weaknesses:I haven't found any yet, maybe just some small quirks mostly noticable when riding on the street. Bottom bracket movement and "stink-bugging" under braking are noticable on flat, hard ground.
Bike Setup:Stock except tires(Panaracer Fire XC). I have 170LBS preasure and 8 clicks from soft in the rear, and 70LBS, 5 clicks from soft on compression, and 12 clicks from soft on rebound.
Bottom Line:I have 25 hours on the bike now and have no complaints. Maybe it isn't the best downhiller, but there aren't many big hills in northern Illinois anyway. The bike does pitch forward under hard braking, but I find if rear brake is applied first this is minimized. I have had no unusual squeaks or rattles yet or anything break or fall off. I would suggest keeping the fork clean and greased though as mine developed a lot of stiction in a short period of time (went away after greasing). This is a great bike! I would recomend it to anyone looking for a technical trailbike.

Strengths:very light for a full suspension bike. Good on single track and climbs unbelievably
Weaknesses:Scary downhill ride if rear shock rebound is not dialed in property. Tough to transport, as the huge top tube will not fit into most trunk bike racks--a small price to pay, though
Similar Products Used:demoed Cannondale Super V 900, Proflex, Specialized FSR, Trek VRx3000
Bike Setup:Stock, but with Shimano 858 pedals
Bottom Line:I resisted full suspension for years, but decided to succumb this winter. Did a lot of research and narrowed it down to a Mantra or the Specialized FSR. Almost bought the FSR, which I found out would have been a mistake, after riding the Mantra.

Everything everyone has ever said about this bike climbing well is 100% true. I can make it up stuff on this that would have been impossible on my hardtail. Is also great on singletrack, with really comfortable riding position.

Downhill takes a lot of getting used to. I havent gone OTB yet, but that was because I was advised to roll back the rear shock rebound about 6 clicks. Good call, otherwise hitting the front brake can buck you right out of the saddle. Is also smart to slide the saddle back on the rails a little, to get your weight back. Someone else suggested a shorter stem, which I'm still contemplating. In any case, it is better downhill than a hardtail, which is what I am used to.

Also, the Mars long-travel forks are great, although I'm still trying to figure how to best dial them in. If anyone out there has figured this out, I would be pleased to hear from them.

FInally, the "mediterranean blue" paint job kicks ass!

All in all, a great ride for a cross-country/single track rider. If you're heavily into downhill riding (which I am not, as I dont live near any really big hills), this likely is not the bike for you.

Favorite Trail:Anywhere my wheels will roll, but single track rules!
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Rides great (so far)
Weaknesses:original tires too slick for my needs. I like to use waterbottles, so a more conveniant mountig location would have been nice, but so far it is not as bad as I expected.
Similar Products Used:None, coming off of a hardtail.
Bike Setup:So far stock except tires (Panaracer Fire XC) and barends.
Bottom Line:Its really too early to tell, but so far I have found nothing to really complain about.I recently tested a Fisher Sugar, Santa Cruz Superlight, Trek VRX400, and the Mantra Comp. I found the Fisher to be very nice, but the genesis geomety didn't feel right. The Trek felt heavy and seemed to bounce too much while pedaling. I almost bought the Santa Cruz, very nice bike. I almost didn't ride the Klien. My initial impression was it was too weird. What a mistake that would have been! I knew within 100 yards this bike would fit my needs the best. I will review it again later after I get more time on it.I hope my first impression lasts!
