Strengths:affordable and gets the job done well
Weaknesses:not durable at all
Similar Products Used:Kona
Bike Setup:Long travel xc
Bottom Line:Was a great bike, loved it like a child, lasted four years, light local riding with the ocasional weekend trip to something epic. Have 04 model which had weak chain stays, Jamis replaced when snapped with beafier o5. Had very low miles for 4 year old bike, my local trails require my hardtail, twisty and mellow. The down tube snapped in the main triangle riding in the Catskills mts, NY. Jamis claims 5 year warranty, hope they honor it. You get what you pay for is the bottom line.

Strengths:bomb proof! Incredible spec for the money, fork and rear shock are awesome
Weaknesses:weight, wheels
Similar Products Used:spec epic, stumpjumper, GF hifi, cake
Bike Setup:stock w/ bontrager race lite wheels
Bottom Line:I picked this bike up new in the box 2 years ago and rode it for 1 year. I sold it to get a 2008 epic because I had got into racing and lets face it racing a 30lb bike you are at a disadvantage. for racing i'm glad I sold it but I really wish I still had the bike It rode like a dream!

The wheels are junk! I had to adjust both hubs almost every ride. but for $2300 you cant have your cake and eat it too.

The bike descends like a bomb on rails. It is much more forgiving and stable than my 08 epic. and really for the weight, it doesn't climb that bad either. with my racelite wheels tubeless and specialized captain tires it weighed in at about 29.5lbs

Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Value (a lot of bang for your buck), suspension, geometry and its ability to almost out-shine most other "boutique" bikes that cost twice as much in tight & twisty-single track.
Weaknesses:Weight. It's a tad heavy (mine is around 31lbs), but still climbs well and feels light in the air.
Similar Products Used:Ellsworth Truth (Rode it 2 yrs, then it mysteriously disappeared), hence the Jamis...sad for the loss, but more than satisfied with the replacement.
Bike Setup:Stock, except for the Maxxis Ignitor 2.3 tires and Oury grips.
Bottom Line:Although I was really bummed about losing my Ellsworth, the Jamis has filled in nicely (especially since I couldn't afford another Truth) and the extra 1" in travel comes in handy. For the price, I really don't think you can find a better bike.

I've been riding this XLT for over 3 years now (it's a 2005) and have not been disappointed, but pleasantly surprised at the quality of bike I got for $2300. It can hang with the best of them, and may even excel when the going gets twisty and technical (those east-coast guys know how to ride that tight single-track), so I'm going to give it 5 chills for value and 4 over-all due to the rear suspension firming up under heavy breaking. Other than that, it's flawless.

Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Richard's Bikes (frame only)
Strengths:The frame/suspension set-up rock. (I have the 2005 XLT 2.0)
Weaknesses:The rear triangle. The 2005 and older XLT's had problems with the rear chainstays breaking, and I actually cracked my seatstay at one of the upper pivots. Jamis sent me an entire rear triangle from an '06 and no probs so far. It is the GTO orange color and it suprisingly looks pretty cool with the anodized red frame.
Similar Products Used:Iron Horse & Trek
Bike Setup:Avid juicy 5's, Weirwolfs, Sram X-9 Deraileurs, Race Face Deus cranks, Mavic XC717's, Minute 2 fork, blah blah blah...
Bottom Line:It's a great climber for a 5 incher and it absolutely shreds downhill. I love technical stuff and this bike has handled everything I've come across. The '06 rear takes care of triangle issues, so anybody out there who hasn't upgraded to the '06 rear should do so.

I love this bike, it is perfect for aggressive XC/Trail riding and looks kick ass too.

Weaknesses:Frame is a bit heavy, and jamis cheaped out on the cassette and crankset
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:stock, with the the Cassette replace to a sram pg 990
Bottom Line:i have to change my last posting for this bike. Admittedly i ride a little on the hard side, but also im riding XC trails, very rarely do i actually need the full 5" of travel offered by this bike. The downside i find with the bike is the climb rate is a little under my standards, but then again im used to riding a light weight hardtail. But on the other hand because of the 5 inches of travel you dont even need to realy pick a line on your decents, just bomb it and go. The bike is oodles of fun. Heres the thing that i noticed since my last ride, (which was ride #4 on the bike) the rear triangle is already broken, right above the pivot point. Again i stress the fact that the bike is considered an "all mountain bike" and i managed to brake the frame on my 4th ride on XC trails, im not sure if it was a manufacturing error, or if jamis is just cheaping out all together, but as a whole, i have never, i mean never broken a frame before. so keep that in mind when considering purchasing this bike.

Strengths:awesome frame, awesome components for the money
Weaknesses:Jamis cheaped out on the crankset and the cassette itself, but i cant complain for the price i paid. Also the tires that come with the bike are junk too narrow for the bike and too heavy.
Similar Products Used:XC hardtails, so ummm none
Bike Setup:stock but with michelin all mountain tires and a sram pg-990 cassette
Bottom Line:this bike is great, its my first full suspension, and i realy thought that i would have alot of trouble climing. Fact of the matter is, i dont, furthermore if you dont like picking lines, dont worry about it, because frankly with the exception of massive drops the bike is able to take anything thrown at it.

Strengths:2006 orange monster model. Great all mountain bike for the buck. Excellent components, strong frame with good geometry. Jamis did a good job putting a great package together. Has stood up wonderfully to over a year of very regular 240-255 lb clydesdale abuse. Great front and rear shocks, brakes, deraileurs, shifters, BB, etc. If will fly downhill and climbs like a mountain goat. For an all mountain bike the center of gravity is low, which is great for turns etc, but it does decrease the clearance a little bit - small price to pay. Decent weight for a bike that will handle a bashing.
Weaknesses:Had some issues initailly with the crankset; it kept coming apart. It ended up being a common Truvativ issue with that particular model and they replaced it no problem. Had to upgrade the springs in the front fork, but that's because of my weight - not the bike. Tires are weak sauce. They drifted around corners more than I am comfortable with. I wore them out anyway and replaced with Kenda Nevegals. As with most bikes the seat post was a little weak - especially for a large rider. All pretty minor stuff overall.
Similar Products Used:Trek hardtails - this is my first FS rig. I'll never go back now.
Bike Setup:Stock except for Nevegal tires, Thompson seatpost, and extra extra stiff springs in the Minute 2 fork. Took off the large chainring and added a bash guard making it a 2x9, because I rarely used those gears and it added a significant amount of clearance.
Bottom Line:Great bike that required only a few modifications to make it a phenominal bike. I would recommend it to anybody 10 times over. Can I give a rating of 6 chilis? As long as you understand that this is all mountain bike, not a superfast, superlight CC bike. I would especially highly recommend this bike to any clydesdale who is tired of breaking all the crappy components built for 120 lb'ers - no offense intended lightweights.

Strengths:Bomb-proof, quick enough uphill and a rocket downhill
Weaknesses:Stock Hutchinson Spyder tires offer too little traction for all mountain riding
Bike Setup:Stock except for Panaracer Fire XC Pro tires
Bottom Line:I purchased the 2005 model in Feb 2006 and have not been disappointed. This is an awesome bike for general all terrain riding. Adjustable fork makes for easy transition from climbing to descending, rear suspension sucks up the big bumps without affecting pedaling or braking.

I have used it for adventure racing, 24 hour races, and epic weekend rides and it keeps coming back for more. Components have held up extremely well under all conditions I have thrown at it. Other than the usual brake pads, shifter cables, and tires I am riding all the original parts. Not too bad for 1500 miles of mountain riding.

I would definitely buy another Jamis.

Strengths:*Note this is for the 2006 model

-Frame has been redone for 2006 with a newly reinforced rear triangle and bottom bracket. (if you check out the new steastays it will put any questions about the frame's integrity to rest, this thing is solid as stone)

-Jamis is no frills no nonsense, their bikes aren't fancy and there are no gimmicks, instead the spec is the very best bang for the buck in the industry (seriously) and the ride quality is awesome

-Lots of adjustability
Weaknesses:Not a whole lot to speak of... the tires are pretty weak and they were replaced after one ride, the paint isn't bad compared to some but still comes off fairly easily with even a little cable rub... also, though the 4-way adjustment on the shock as been a blessing for me, some however may see it as a burden if they aren't really sure what they want (though most bike shops will help you set em up to your likings if need be)
Similar Products Used:nothing in this category
Bike Setup:Thomson Seatpost/Stem, Titiec Pluto Carbon bars, Continental Diesels, Sram chain, XT cassette, nokon cables, oury grips
Bottom Line:The bottom line is this, Jamis is an east coast company through and through and this bike is the proof in the pudding. Its got a pretty slack headtube (68.5) and a steepish seat tube (74ish) thus resulting in its relatively short top tube. All this addds up to the bike doing extremely well on very technical, tight, steep and fast singletrack. This thing climbs extremely well due to the SPV but this thing was born to go downhill, the faster you go the more comfortable it feels, its startling how normal it feels at speed. So, if you ride really slow twisty singletrack where there aren't any mountains for miles (this is no xc bike) or really wide open west coast stuff there may be bikes better suited to that terrain. If you are however looking for a bike to do the kind of riding I mentioned before at a damn good price I seriously recommend this bike.

Strengths:Looks like it won't break for some time. Handles great for a 5" travel rig. Makes me feel very confident, I go where I want! Red ano is sweeet! Great value-frame and shock set up. The Swinger 4-Way is a wonderful little diddy. Once I got it set up, I just go. Amazing up-hill and flats ability, then opens up when the time comes. The more I ride the bike, the more I'm loving it. Jamis has done a great job!
Weaknesses:I had to get used to the added 4-5 pounds of weight after my last, less burly FS. But, I don't mind, considering how quickly I snapped the last one. No complaints so far. I don't worry too much about weight anymore--I want strength!
Similar Products Used:Kona was all I rode for some time. Last frame was a King Kikapu-snapped it.Before that, Hei Hei, ti hard tail-loved it-sold it,before that, multiple steel hard tails-broke 'em all. Kona gave me a larger frame than I rode after the last break, they wouldn't exchange, so I moved on, and glad I did!
Bike Setup:Full XTR drivetrain. XT disc. Race Face parts up top. Ritchey wheels. '06 Marz All-Mtn.II. My frame is a 21". With the ultra light weight of XTR, etc. my bike weighs in at 28 1/2 lbs. I guess a little less than most.
Bottom Line:After years of riding with a XC race ethic, and steadily branching out into more aggressive territories and style, I have dropped the race mentality(though I still go fast!). I want a bike that will take the abuse and keep me coming back to give it more. I don't want to worry. This bike, set up with the 130mm All Mtn.II, 32mm stanchions, has got me feeling more aggressive and confident than ever. It is a little sluggish in flat single track, compared to a short travel FS, or hardtail, but hey, this isn't a race bike, and those bikes won't take the drops with ease.
I live in N.Fl., while no mountains, we have some very well designed trails into quarries, whatever, that will keep anyone challenged. I also travel frequently, and I don't want, nor can I afford a stable of bikes to fit different needs. I wanted a bike I can ride aggressive XC, do some urban assault, and then bomb a mountain when I head elsewhere. For the short time I have had this bike built up...it's fitting the bill. This is an all-mountain, all-trail bike. It looks tough, it rides tough, and it's just bad-ass!

Duration Product Used:2 Years

Strengths:value for money
good componentry
robust (ish)
go anywhere, do anything
Weaknesses:swingarm (yawn)
climbing
Bike Setup:17" frame. Stock except for tires, 11-34 XT cassette, Time pedals, 185mm front rotor and (last 2 mths) 05 Pike Team fork & WTB laserdisc 20mm wheel
Bottom Line:I'm a keen trail rider, mostly round the Wellington region and occasionally round NZ. Local trails are harsh, good mix of rocky 'fire trails', grass and bush single track, plenty of streams and mud esp in winter !
This is a great bike, and it has taken me on some of my best rides. Ever. I'd recommend this as an option to anyone thinking of going the trailbike route.

Comfortable, and can go more or less anywhere, uphill, flat or down :-)
The Manitou suspension is *great*, SPV setup is a breeze, and it really works.
Avid Juicy 7's are excellent, great modulation and power and quiet.
The handling is easy and stable, especially at speed in rough conditions. Front end bite can be a bit iffy, especially in looser conditions like gravel (it's folded up under me a few times :-)
Superb on technical terrain up or down, great grip when climbing. Do not really notice brake jack on descents.
The XLT has opened up a lot of tracks I would not have attempted on other bikes.

Howevr, for me it is just not efficient on *steep* climbs; I always get there, it just takes a LOT of effort compared to similar bikes on the same trails. The front end does wander on steep climbs too - no suprises there. Move to 34t cassette helped, but still harder work than I think it should be.

It's great everywhere else and can stay with 'most anything.

I'm on my 3rd swingarm, 1st broke by left dropout after 9mths, 2nd went at weld behind chainrings after 8mths. Both replaced under warranty in less than a week - good stuff ! Have an 05 swing arm now, very different and no issues yet.
Front caliper popped the seals one day (that was 'exciting'), manufacturing fault & replaced under warranty.

Moans and complaints ? It's not the bike; it's the components, they just wear out *all the time*. I'm only about 190lbs plus gear, and I like to think I maintain this thing - keep it clean and serviced - but in just under two years of owning it I've had to replace .....
2 complete drivesets (front rings, cassette, chain)
1 freewheel
2 bottom brackets
2 sets of steering head bearings
all the rear suspension bearings (some of them twice)
rear wheel bearings & cones. Twice.
5 sets of brakepads (ok - they're consumables)
5 sets of tyres (ditto)
Have lost count of the number of rear derailleur cables (ditto). Went to full length outer last winter, problem fixed.

Anyone else got comments about component wear and tear ?

Bike gets a 5 for value and a 4-great for overall - would have been a but for the climbing.

Strengths:Great componentry. A lot of bike for the money. Nice ride with the correct suspension settings. Good all mountain choice for short money when compared to other in the same category.
Weaknesses:Chain stay prone to breakage. Bearing pivot was defective. Bottom bracket is on the low side so pedal strikes are frequent.
Similar Products Used:Kona Dawg Deluxe. Woodstock 505.
Bike Setup:Deore XT hollowtech crank. WTB Wierwolf 2.5 " tires. Azonic platform pedals. WTB lazer saddle
Bottom Line:Had a problem with a bearing pivot after two weeks of riding. Jamis had a new one sent to my LBS right away. It was determined that the seatstay had a problem and again, Jamis had a new one sent ASAP. Great service for Jamis. The bike is very good as an all around ride. It goes where you point it, climbs well for a 30lb bike and can run the downhills with gusto. Suspension takes a little time to set up but it works well when adjusted properly. SPV is nice. I am a happy Jamis customer. I wish it was a little lighter but what do expect from an all mountain bike.

Bike Setup:2003 frame (horst link), Manitou min.1 fork, Mavic/Hugi wheels, pro-taper bars, race face deus stem/post. XT drive (8 speed), gripshift, Avid mech.disc brakes
Bottom Line:This bike rocks! I put my 2003 XLT2 frame on the shelf for 1 year. All the hype around the Turner Burner being blown out at Supergo, lured me in. Sure the Turner climbed great, but I was using all the travel quite often, and I felt I was starting to miss that extra 1.5" of travel. I put the Jamis together and got the shock dialed in right.
The first ride was phenomal! I rode the same ride 4 days earlier on the Turner, and the Jamis was faster everywhere, except the climbs and the difference was barely noticeable then. Mine weighs 27.5 lbs (19")-about 1 lb. more than the Turner, but the weight is worth the extra travel. American frames are no better than Taiwan, just more expensive. Some people have had breakage probs. My 2003 is a warranty replacement for a broke c/stay on my 2001 Dakar Expert, so I've had my probs. as well. However, I have been hammering this frame for over 1-1/2 years, with no probs. Highly recommended alternative to EXPENSIVE American made frames. I don't miss my "made in USA" frame at all!

Strengths:Highly adjustable suspension and great component choice. Jamis seems to be renowned for getting the most out of their suppliers. SPV works great. With sag set correctly the bike settles into the platfrom and stays there- climbs like a goat. SPV also allows for pretty good acceleration while still smoothing out the trail. Juicy 7's ROCK! Infinite travel is cool for steep climbs, but really the suspension adapts really well to all situations. I ride with the travel at full 99% of the time.
Weaknesses:Aside from a random clicking that I can't find-none. I'm not sure if the hutchison spiders are great in hardpak wet conditions. I bought the 2005 xlt 2.0 with the upgraded rear triangle so no breaks for me.
Similar Products Used:Test-rode Giant and Trek full suspension bikes
Bike Setup:All stock, but added some sweet t.h.e industries fenders- front and rear. I live in the WET northwest!
Bottom Line:I love my bike. Before this I had a Trek 820 with minimal front suspesion, this bike is unexpressably better. I can cruise down the road without losing momentum from pedaling and then I can hit the trail and the quite active suspension takes over and gives a great ride. There may be some square-edge hits that load up the rear suspension a bit, but I haven't felt like it greatly kills forward momentum. I know the four-bar suspension isn't a "true" setup due to patent/copyright costs that would have to be paid. But overall the bike performs wonderfully. If I setup my suspension stiffer I'm sure I could go bigger, but I haven't got there yet. Maybe Jamis could produce a 6" version like the Santa cruz Nomad for a little more aggresive riding security(my reason for 4 chilis in the overall rating). Guaranteed it would cost $2000 less and perform just as well. There are many inspiring mountain bikes out there, but my beautiful red xlt 2.0 makes me grin every time I look at it. It hasn't let me down yet. Buy this bike and ride, with no worries. This is a package that will make anybody a better rider.

Unfortunately, both sides of my chainstay broke at the weld going over a 10 inch log. While disappointed, I have to give props to Richardsbicycles.com for not only having 2005 reinforced replacements in stock, but also offering to ship it to me at no charge if I didn't want to come pick it up since I'm about an hour away from their store. My bike was only out of service for 1 day. Overall, I love the bike. Even with the issue I had, I'd make the purchase again. Strengths:Brakes are excellent. The frame has been fine with no issues for perhaps 100 rides. The stock wheel set and Drive line have also worked well
Weaknesses:I hit the bottom bracket and my pedals all the time. I do this more then anyone I ride with. It appears that the rebound damping all the way off is the way to minimize this. It still happens but it happens less if the bike returns fast from compressions. I ride a 19" frame and weight about 170 pounds. The sag needs to be set a little high to help with the crank banging too. The bike is heavy if you care about weight. Mine is 31.5 pounds with 2.4 Kendra DH tires. My wide tires tend to deliver mud to the chain because the chain stay is so close to the tire.
Similar Products Used:Giant NRS1, Schwinn 4X4, GT Idrive, Santa cruz super light.

Bottom Line:I love the bike and have adapted to its personality. All bikes have something to deal with. This one climbs really well for a heavy bike. It decends really well and this is where it really shines. The only place I find it a little weird is in the choppy cross hill lines with hits spaced shorter then the wheelbase. This where the crank or the pedal will hit the next on coming thing. The bike is well worth the money and is a real blast to ride. IT is almost addictive.

Strengths:I bought the frame breand new off ebay so this review is for the frame only.(the way all reviews should be). The bike is great. It handles awesome. The slacker headtube angle(68.5) makes it very stable at high speed. The suspention feels really plush. You'd think it had 8 inches of travel. The frame appears to be realy strong. It has no preciveable bob in the reaar suspension. This is a initial review. I will post a follow up reviw with info about durability later.
Weaknesses:Alot of reviewers complain that the chain stays break. Jamis has fixed this problem. The new chain stays are gusseted and if you break one of the old ones they will replace it with one of the new ones. Mine came with the reinforced chainstay.
Similar Products Used:Ironhorse hollowpoint(broke the frame),access hard tail,dakar xc expert(great bike), giant ds2
Bike Setup:marzocchi marathon s 120 travel, sram x9 shifters and derailieurs, alex dp20 disk wheels, shimano xt 4 piston hydros. About 30% sag, 100 psi in the spv chamber, and finish chamber about 2 turns form bottomed out.
Bottom Line:This bike is a fully capable all-mountain trail bike. If you plan on doing drops make sure you crank down the finish chamber size on the swinger 4-way. This will keep it from bottoming out on hard drops. I've only taken 3-4 foot drops so i'm not sure how much it can handle. I got the frame for a steal so i'm giving five chillis for value. Even though it has a very slack head tube angle it still rails the corners like a cross country bike. You won't be dissapointed with this bike. If you are an agressive trail rider this bike is for you.

Strengths:It has some great components for those of us that really want the 3.0, but can't afford it. I've been impressed with the manitou suspension on it. Performs much better than expected. Still light enough to climb better than anything else I've tried to date. I have the '05 model. I absolutely love the lever that let's you quickly adjust your front suspension to 80mm or so of travel when climbing hills. I actually thought that new feature would be more in the way and a pain in the ass, but it's saved me on some climbs.
Weaknesses:Top tube could stand to be longer. The con to that lever that lets you adjust your travel on the front fork, is that to get it back up to it's full 5", it seems you have to be totally off the bike, no pressure on the suspension at all. I've tried wheelies, yanking up on it, sitting upright on flats with almost no weight on my handle bars, and nothing but getting off and holding that lever down seems to work. So for rolling trails, as long as the DH isn't too steep you're ok.
Similar Products Used:I was riding a Cannondale Jekyl for awhile. I hated it compared to the Jamis. The Jamis performed so much better, it was like night and day. So responsive this bike is.
Bike Setup:All original components.
Bottom Line:I work at a shop, and had my heart set on the 3.0, but when it came time to pay up, I realized I hadn't saved quite enough money. So I got this instead, I was bummed at first, because I love the components on the 3.0, but then....I rode it. Can I just say, "WOW!!"? It's awesome. I am very impressed with the manitou swinger rear suspension. (remember I'm rating the '05 model) It has almost no bob when climbing, and it has alot more cushion than I expected going downhill, and is amazingly soft when landing drops or airs. This bike is an awesome all around bike. Once the resorts are free of the snow, I will be testing it on some true DH stuff, but for now, it's been more than I could've hoped for.

Strengths:Coming from a xc race setup hardtail with 60mm front travel, obvious strength is downhill/freeride. relaxed head tube is great, allows front wheel to change track very easily unless hard on the front brake. switches from edge to edge nicely. geometry can be set to be quite xc (something i couldn't get a giant reign to do), yet still feel like your laying back heaps on teh downhills, and are able to jump it comfortably. spec is great for price, IT on fork is invaluable, especially when climbing.
if shocks are setup right, it accelerates quite well, almost as good as a hardtail, def. better than a VT.
juicy brakes are great.
people bag the tyres but i reckon they're ok. minimal rolling resistance centrally, with decent knobs on edge.
1m drop offs no problem
Weaknesses:Can climb everything i used to on my hardtail, even the long super steep stuff, but it is definately slower. going along the flats feel slow, but on rough rutted/rocky flats it starts to excel.

have ridden about 300km off road with no frame/tech problems. my bike shop state that the rear triangle was updated for 2005, were the broken ones reviewed prior to 05?
Similar Products Used:Norco Rush for past 4 years.
Haro Exo single pivot before that.
test rode giants/kona.
Bike Setup:stock. after 300km, cant think of anything i would want to change, except for weight issues.
Bottom Line:as others have said, will never win a race of any sort. i would not even recommend it for occasional half-serious racing xc/enduro/downhill. it just doesnt fit to any category.

if you only do minimally rough stuff, about the level of a technical xc race, then this will be too much travel/freeride geometry for you. something like a trance would be better i think.

but if it is just for fun trips, with some rock gardens, drops off, and fast flowing downhills, but want to be able climb back up again, this is great.

it only looses points because it does feel frustrating slow on flat even surfaces at times.

Bottom Line:It's too bad that I put in two other reviews claiming that the bike is great. It rode alright until it broke. The head angle is too slack for a bike like this. Even on the flats it is slow. Swingarm broke. When I returned the frame there were 3-5 other XLT swingarms in the trash behind the shop. I now have all the parts plus CrossMax XL's on a Kona Coiler Dee Lux. I should have gone that way from the start (but then I would have paid way more for some sweet parts.) Someone wrote below that Jamis spent so much time on the part spec that they overlooked quality control at the factory. Bikes shouldn't break the way I have been seeing these Jamis bikes snap. Do your research and stay away from Jamis.

4 chilis for the value, 1 for crappy construction and warranty service.

Strengths:I pretty much bought this bike for the parts such as the manitou SPV technology and Avid Juicys, plus the fact that it was reasonably priced at $2000 and had 5" of travel front and rear. The bike was fun to ride until it broke, then it was a death trap and now i'm back on my trusty Homegrown
Weaknesses:The frame broke on the downtube...the company does not stand behind their product. I feel that this bike should not have cracked. The warranty did not cover the broken frame.

Bottom Line:I will forever tell anyone to not purchase a Jamis bicycle. I feel that this bike should not have broken, but it did and now i'm up a creek w/ busted bike. Don't waste your cash on Jamis. They are crap. The warranty did not cover the broken frame. I had to give it three chilis for value, because i havent had any problems with the Avid Juicys; they are great brakes. The Manitou Minute 2 has also been great. I had to have the shock rebuilt once, but otherwise, it's been a great rear shock. Save your cash. Don't buy Jamis.

Weaknesses:None that I have found in almost a thousand miles and a year of riding technical, muddy, rooted, rocky WA state singletrack.
Bottom Line:This is a top quality bike for a fair price. I have seen several places selling this model for cheap since it is the end of the year and the 05's are out. I highly recomend you pick one up while you can. Also, I noticed that the ratings on this model here at MTBR are fairly skewed. That is, the first 21 reviews for this bike were perfect or near perfect and then the last five reviews in a row gave it a very poor rating due to an alleged chain stay frame defect. I hope it is obvious to everyone that these reviews are probably the work of ONE disgruntled customer who got unlucky and purchased a rare defective unit. Jamis is communicative, my dealer and the importer are communicative. (no one will do the work for you; ergo I had to call and call to get replacement parts--but I got them)
Stock tires are the pits!
Stock H-bar is way too long!

Strengths:Great climber, Very great SPV shocks, Nice Juliana brakes. Other than a bad weld, which snapped and was quickly replaced, this bike is the best I've had since my Mango FSR in 1998.
Weaknesses:One weld on the rear chainstay, (it snapped in a race). Crank / chain setup (chain suck cost me about 5 minutes in a race). I cranked the crank arm much tigher forcing it farther inward, and now the chain does not go down between the bb and the crank. A carbon spacer the same diameter as the bb would be a great solution for these guys here.

Bike Setup:Stock 16" (Changed tires and seatpost). The cockpit was a little tight, I'm at 5'10 and prefer a Medium as in Giant and Specialized Mediums.

The Jamis 19" felt long. But I swapped the seatpost, (which is really nice in design and light), with my older Ritchey, which sets you about 2 inches farther back, and I'm much more comfortable. The bike came with under spec'd Mosquitos, which wore out at about 150 miles, I complained and the put on the Scorpions that the bike was spect with. They wore out at 100 miles. I put some Panaracer Fire Freerides 2.4 on it, which are huge and interfere with the chain on downhills, but they are lighter and faster than I thought and change the whole characteristics of the bike on tech stuff. I'd like something in the middle, harder compound than the Hutches, but better rolling than the Fires, but with the same grip on the sides.

The pedals are spect better than listed with the Crank Bros Candies instead of the Atacs.
Bottom Line:Great bike. I was after a bike with adjustable shocks like my Psylo sl on my NRS, but not as rattly.

The Cutting Edge guy said "What do you want to do, fiddle with your shocks or ride?" That's the point of the Manitou SPV.

The Kona Doggy stayed in the shop, and the Jamis came home to live.

The Manitous are a --- to setup initially, but once done, they automatically lock out based on my weight, then know what to do when things get rough. Bike has a lot of potential for weight loss down the road.

Strengths:Size, Geometry, Package, Price.
Weaknesses:The only weakness is my damn shoulder that dislocates all the time even though I had it arthroscopically repaired a year ago.

The stock Huchinson Scorpion tires suck. They don't have any grip on anything other than hardpack. And, Jamis would be better to stock this bike with a 12-34 cassette.
Similar Products Used:Kona Dawg Dee-Lux, Haro Werx EXT, Santa Cruz Heckler, Intense 5.5, Balfa 2-Step.
Bike Setup:Stock plus an MRP LRP, ODI Ruffian Lock on Grips, XT 12-34 Cassette, and Crank Bros Mallet pedals and Schwalbe King Jim tires.
Bottom Line:I work in a shop and was able to get this bike as an employee purchase direct from Jamis. But even if I had to buy it at retail the deal is still sweet!

By the time I got the bike Jamis had corrected the problem of the stem, on the early models it was way too long. Mine came with a 90mm stem which is better that the 120mm of the early ones. I now have a 100mm Thomson stem and a Thomson post on order and those should be on soon.

Everyone has their own idea of what the best seat/pedals/grips/and tires are. Mine are shown above and I probablly would have swapped them out on any other bike I bought.

Since this deal was so good, my initial plan was to get this bike and a Santa Cruz Heckler frame since all I would have needed were a seatpost and headset (which I would have sold with the 2.0 frame.) I got the chance to ride a Heckler at the same time as this bike and I have to say, the 4-bar Jamis works better, period.

Since last year Jamis has moved the rear pivot location up to the seatstay, a good move.

The fork and shock on this bike are amazing. There is next to no bob on climbs and the front end doesn't lift up on steep ascents. The bike isn't the fastest climber but, that fact that it does climb, and well is great for such a long legged trailbike.

Descents are smooth and fast and the Jucy brakes are better than any other I've ridden. They seem to have taken a little longer to break in, but now that they are the modulation, power, feel, and adjustability are second to none.

I'd challenge anyone out there to match this bike up against any other at the retail price of $2100.00. This bike has better components every time. And even if you decide after a couple of months that this isn't the frame you wanted, you still have a top notch set of parts to slap onto a new frame and a frame that many are probablly willing to buy.

If you are a racer and need only one bike than you should perhaps look elsewhere. I race mine in 24 hour events and find that it is great for passing lycra clad xc'ers on the descents (and hanging in with most of them on climbs)

If you are in the market for a long travel trailbike that feels a lot like that hardtail you are "upgrading" from than this is for you.

And if you are like most of the guys out there and have to convince your wife or parnter that it is worth the expense, you can do no better anywhere than with the Jamis XLT series. Both the 1.0 and 3.0 kick ass too.

It rides pretty light, even when set up a bit burlier (just weighed mine @ 33 lbs). Hardtail-riding friends are generally impressed. As others have said, if this is your first soft-tail, be prepared to spend some time adjusting your technique before judging the suspension. I'm not a huge fan of air-only forks, and the Minute is especially bad at smoothing out small bumps. Not sure if its stiction from the seals, or the SPV valve, or what - but am considering swapping a Z1 off another bike. Will probably move to 180mm roters eventually. Also, my preference would be a higher bottom bracket - I hit the pedals and big ring more than anything I've ever ridden. Replacing big ring with bashguard helped some. Bottom line is that this is a very capable aggressive XC bike, and an incredible value.

Purchased At:SPIN CITY CYCLE INC.
Strengths:Good components. Climes well. Handles technical sections well, and she’s pretty good on DH. So far, so good.
Weaknesses:I picked up the bike yesterday and I rode it all day today, and I don’t see any, just yet.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6700, Trek Fuel 80
Bike Setup:Standard.
Bottom Line:As I mentioned above, so far, so good. I am pretty happy with the choice I made. Very comfortable bike and comes with pretty good components.

Derailleur Shimano XT - works well. No problem changing gears going up hill.
Avid Juicy Seven – my first hydraulic breaks. I need to get used to them, but they do stop on the dime. Made little noise for few seconds after riding through body of water, but worked well after that. Juicy Seven works in all conditions, and that’s what matters.
Front Fork, Minute 2:00 (SPV) and the rear shock Manitou 4-Way SPV are nice, did not have to be broken in. They just work well. Need to make sure the pressure is right. Set it up for whatever riding you like to do, and just go. I did couple of 2’ drops and the suspension felt good.

The bottom line, it is a good bike with good specs that comes with great components for about 2K. If you are into aggressive riding, if you like to do little of everything, I suggest that you will take a look at this bike. Go to you LBS and take it for a ride, see it for yourself.

I will update the review in few weeks after I spend more time on this bike.

Strengths:Quality parts as Standard , latest design rear suspension as used by some top end manufacturers ( santa cruz , Yeti ,etc ) 4-way rear shock & minute 2 fork are a standout especially the " SPV " feature, a bit Daunting at first trying to find a Good setting for the rear shock as there is alot of adjustment( thats why it is called a 4 -way ).The avid juicy 7 brake levers are so smooth to use.
Weaknesses:1/ The Avid disc's are pretty average , think they come with 165mm disc's ( quite small ) , my front disc's are starting to really shudder already.

2/The paint scratch's quite easily , a bit like norco's .

more to come when in a month or two when i ride it heaps more.
Similar Products Used:Haro X2 ,
Bike Setup:Standard except for the rear drivetrain which was upgraded to Sram ( Pc99 hollow point chain ,the 2nd best sram cassete(( forgotten )), X.0 rear derailer , X.7 trigger shifters , Crank Bros Mallet " C " pedals ( love em ) , shorter stem 90mm ,
Bottom Line:Although i have only had this bike for under a week now , i can see little areas where could do with improvement , I just read a question from a rider in MTb action and the Author said " The Jamis XLT 2.0 is killer bike for the money" , i would agree . Phenominal bike for the $$$$$ , but if you intend to seriously race in what ever area ( X- country , 4 cross , etc ) , then i'd say that you are wasting your time with this bike. it is purely a fun ,Exploring , back country , all mountoun bike.

Boy'oh'Boy this bike is so much bloody fun to ride ,so smooth over bumps , the Spv feature works great , it's really like a headtail on a smooth surface , but soaks up all the bumps , rocks , branchs when you hit them , the rear end hardens up again when get past the obstacles. I can't stop riding this bloody thing, addicted to it.

If i bought this bike again , i would upgrade the Manitou Minute 2.00 forks to the Minute 3.00 especially when climbing up steep hills ( travel adjustment ) , upgrade the disc's to the larger 205mm wavy disc's ( especially for the front ) and go for Sram X.0 grip shifters on top of the Sram drivetrain i have already.

Overall Great bike for the $$$$Money$$$$ !!!!!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:1999
Strengths:Awesome price, great components, tight handling, ass-saving suspension.
Weaknesses:LITTLE heavy (easily fixed)
Similar Products Used:Klien Mantra (I know, but they're still great climbers), '00 Specialized S-Works FSR, Diamondback Super SL (Superlight clone)
Bike Setup:Stock, except for lighter wheels, seatpost, cassette, pedals and crank. Oh, and I swapped out the Manitou Minute 2.00 for a Minute 1.00.
Bottom Line:Just got back from 4 days in Moab, and this bike was KING of the downhills. I had no trouble keeping up with anybody in the climbs, and this thing rode like a CR 250 down Porcupine rim; solid, straight and true. I RAGED on the downhill, and the awsome Juicy 7's and plush suspension kept everything in control. The geometry seemed spot-on for both climbing and downhilling, but the Manitou suspension is what made this rig shine. True, the fork will bob when you get out of the saddle, but EVERY fork will unless you lock it out. It was minimal, though, and what I noticed is that when you dropped the front end over a huge step with your butt hanging over the rear wheel, the fork wouldn't just collapse and give you that impending endo-feeling, it kept firm but compliant. But it used all it's travel on big-hits, when it needed to. Same with the rear shock; the SPV valving REALLY keeps thing flat and level without sacrificing bump absorption. True, if you were pedalling on pavement, you just might see some shock movement, but this was due in large part to pedalling technique; I experimented with letting my legs fall with each stroke like I was in too small a gear on flat ground, and then in a higher gear with nominal pedal effort but still spinning. It makes a difference. A refined technique, pedalling in circles, rewards you with no discernable bob. And, if you stand up and pump to get you over that rock face, the shock really doesn't move at all, and that's why this 30-lb rig feels like 26. In short, I could find NO handling faults or flaws with this bike. I am SO happy with it! People that fault it because the suspension might bob a little don't really understand SPV valving, or the nature of suspension, or worse yet, take the magazine testers word as gospel when they say "this thing doesn't bob a bit when hammered...". Anything but a fully rigid bike will bob a bit when hammered, UNLESS it's got inertia-valves, which I haven't ridden. We're talking SPV here.

To lighten the thing from the get-go, I swapped out the heavy-duty crank, wheels, pedals and seatpost for lighter ones, and switched from the 11-32 sub-LX cassette for an 11-34 XT. Saved well over a pound. Got rid of the stock saddle for my favorite Titec. The stock tires I've found to be great all-around, and in the sand of Poison Spider, I was pedalling while my buddies were pushing.

You won't be disappointed.

Strengths:You won't find a bike in this price range with better components. Handling is very predictable, and the ride is very plush. It climbs well on technical trails, but what FS bike doesn't?
Weaknesses:At 31 lbs, it's a little porky. The Hutchinson rear tire developed a strange deformity (huge bubble) on the first ride. For anyone over 200 lbs, you have to max out the air pressures in the fork and shock to get the right ride height/stiffness, and the fork still feels soft. The bike tends to endo over jumps because the fork is not balanced with the rear end when pressure is maxed. Might be just me, since I'm a Vet Pro MX'r who's used to jumping a CRF 450. The SPV system works pretty well, but it's a little over-rated. You will notice a little bob in the rear linkage even on the road.
The biggest weakness is actually finding one of these bikes in stock. I called every Jamis dealer in the Denver metro and several mail order houses. Only one shop had a 19" in stock. Lots of dealers offered to take a deposit and order one for me, but nobody could guarantee delivery within a reasonable time-frame. You don't need a shop to put this bike on back-order for you, anyone with internet access and a telephone can do that for themselves.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale, KHS, and Marin Hardtails. AMP and Specialized full suspension.
Bike Setup:Bone stock. Upgrades are redundant for a trail bike that comes as well equipped as this one. Even the pricier XLT 3.0 only weighs about 1.5 lbs less. These are not race bikes, so spend your money on something usefull, like a trip to Moab.
Bottom Line:If you can find one, it's the best all-around bike in the $2000 price range. You won't win any races on it, but for all-around trail riding the bike rips.

Strengths:Strong component package for the price. Plush suspension with very little pedal bob.
Weaknesses:Limited only by the rider.
Similar Products Used:Fuji hardtail. Compared Jamis to Trek Fuel and Liquid, Giant, Specialized, Gary Fisher, others.
Bike Setup:Stock. Avid Juicy 7 disc brakes, XT derailleurs, XT shifters, Truvativ XR-XC Riser handlebar, Fizik Plateau saddle, Manitou 2:00 130mm fork, Manitou Swinger Air SPV 4-way shock, etc.
Bottom Line:For an all round trail bike, you cannot beat the XLT 2.0. Compare the components to those of similarly priced bikes, and you will see how far Jamis stretched to put this bike together. From the grips all the way down to the tires, this bike has an incomparable component package found on bikes that are at least $500 more than the XLT 2.0. I live in a relatively flat section of NJ, but the XLT conquers any hills it attempts. Large roots and rocks are twigs and pebbles to the Manitou 2 Minute and Swinger shocks. The Avid Juicy 7s are a dream to use and to service. The geometry of the XLT favors mild downhill and moderate hill climbing. It's not as light as a cross-country machine (mine is about 30 lbs), but it is not a pig, either. If you are not a racer and want a comfortable and exciting ride, choose the XLT 2.0. One word describes a day on the Fizik saddle of the XLT 2.0: FUN!

Strengths:Great bike for the buck. All super components, avid juicy brakes are awesome and the Manitou SPV front and rear suspension eliminate 99% of bob when sitting. Pretty light for a 5" travel bike and pedals great up hills.
Weaknesses:Haven't noticed anything yet.
Similar Products Used:This is my first softail and I love it.
Bike Setup:All XT components, Truvativ crank, Avid Juicy seven hyd brakes, Manitou Minute 2 fork and Manitou swinger 4 way suspension.
Bottom Line:This is an awesome bike. At first I didn't want to spend the cash but when I compared the components list to other brands this bike was about $500-750 cheaper on avg. Rides awesome on the downhills and I almost enjoy it more on the uphills than my old hardtail. This is probably due to my old bike being the wrong size. Everything seems great and the drivetrain shifts like a dream.

If you love to ride cross country but still don't want to have to shy down from little drops this bike seems to fit the bill. Light enough and given the SPV bob dampening is good enough on the uphills and since there is 5" of travel will be great on the way down.

If I have any problems or accolaids in the future I'll be sure to update this review. So far probably rode over 100kms, 40-50 off road. And it's exceeded my expectations.

Strengths:Best Components, super strong frame and looks great for the price
Weaknesses:Maybe slow up hills but maybe unfair comparing it to my old hard tail. I find myself hanging on hard on the really steep sections. This is due to the higher front end and the shock tend to sag a bit on the steep incline. However, on the other side of the coin this bike is fantastic going down tricky sections over ledges etc.
Similar Products Used:None - first full suspention - previous bikes all hard tails
Bike Setup:Standard with stiffer fork springs for me (105kg)
Bottom Line:Smile on my face.

I am 6'5' and 105kg (sorry mixed measurements) Have looked for about 3months for a full suspention bike. Started out looking at the common Giant, Specialized, Kona etc which are a dime a dozen around here - wanted something different which would fit a tall person. I am very happy so far.

1. My confidence on the technical sections has improved instantly.

2. I dont have a sore butt at the end of my ride.

3. Little disappointed with the speed up steep sections - However I am comparing to my old light hard tail so a little unfair.

4. The components are excelent and the level is high all over not just a good bit thrown in here and there like some onthe brands.

5. The Avid Hydo discs are unreal - so much stopping power and control I can not believe it.

6. The 21 inch bike suits my size well (6'5') I dont find myself slipping off the back of the seat or falling off the front when I stand up.

7. Front forks are great. When you stand up to get a bit of power up a hill they dont bounce up and down at all and they give just the right amount of suspention when going off a ledge. (I have the heavy springs due to my weight 105kg)

I can recomend this bike if you want an all purpose moutain bike (which is what it is). I would not recomend it if you plan on racing as I think it would be a bit heavy and slow up the hills.

Purchased At:Highlander Bike
Strengths:Whole package: SPV, juicy 7's, XT all over, Truvativ cranks, sealed bearing pivots.
Weaknesses:Not a big fan of the saddle comfort, but fit is individual preference. Still debating the tires. They haven't stopped me from having fun but probably haven't helped either.
Similar Products Used:I was able to demo many other "all mountain" bikes; Trek Liquid, Specialized Enduro, Kona Dawg Dee-Lux, Rocky Mountain ETSX. I like the Jamis as much as all of them and better than most. I liked the price the best!
Bike Setup:Stock. Great setup, not much need to change.
Bottom Line:I had high hopes for this bike and have still been blown away by its performance and versatility. As soon as it came in I took it to Moab. It was Feb. and there was some snow but that didn't matter. I tried it out on Amassa Back, Slick Rock, and the downhill course on the Moab Rim trail. Then I took it to Gooseberry Mesa plus a few other rides. The coolest thing about the bike is that these rides are so different and it does great in each situation.
The SPV suspension is awesome, very adjustable. The platform gets rid of pedal bob and even makes steep technical climbs possible on a 5" travel bike. I was able to climb everything that I could on my hardtail. It absorbs bumpy downhills and made the landing of a six-foot drop comfortable.
Juicy 7's are great to work with. Tuning and adjusting is so quick and easy to dial in to your preference. Braking is excellent. Best disc brakes I've dealt with.
Bottom line: Bike as a whole, individual components, and price makes this bike hard to beat. Truly an "all mountain" bike. 5 flamin' chilis all around.

Strengths:SPV front and rear. Avid Juicy 7's. Great price for an awesome component set-up
Weaknesses:My 2.0 came with the Hutchinson Mosquito Air Lite 2.3's. I'm still trying to figure out a good pressure in these. They are fairly slick on roots and rocks compared to my tried and true Panaracer XC Pros. I might switch them out with the new Panaracer Cinders
Bike Setup:Stock except for Thomson stem, Thomson seatpost, and Time Z pedals.
Bottom Line:I'm riding the 21" frame. I've only put about 60 miles on the bike so far. I had my LBS install a firm spring in the fork. I have the fork set at 200lbs main chamber, 60lbs SPV with 1 turn from all the way open and 1/4 turn from slowest rebound. In the shock I have 150lbs main, 110lbs SPV with 2 turns from all the way open and 1.5 turns from slowest rebound. I am still playing with all the pressures but I think I am very close to where I like it. The Minute and 4-way are the reasons why I bought the 2.0 over the 3.0. This bike might not be hand built, and it is not the fanciest or most expensive bike out there but I'll tell you what...it is a blast to ride. Weather it’s hammering up a hill or blasting down, this bike will not disappoint. If you are looking for a great all around trail / mountain bike, do yourself a favor and at least take one for a spin. I can almost guarantee that you will be impressed, especially after you see how much it cost. Oh and the Juicy 7's work absolutely perfect.

Strengths:The bike is BIG (21"), and that's good for me 'cause I'm bigDave. The stock component setup is supreme. I shopped around A LOT before deciding on the Jamis. No one could come close to the components and the price.
Weaknesses:Only one comes in the box??? Really I haven't experienced any weaknesses yet, but I'm still dialing it in. I'll post more later if I run into something.

Bottom Line:So far I have no complaints. I've been riding around bumpy Colorado for a few years now on a '96 Schwinn hardtail. While that bike was a work-horse and never let me down, this new Jamis makes it feel like a circus pony! The Jamis is all around big. I never realized how cramped I was on the Schwinn. I can fly now!! I, of course, have to give a big shout out to Blane at Bike Pro Mobile (http://www.bikepro-mobile.com). He hooked me up with a sweet deal and was persitent enough with Jamis to get me one of the first XLT 2.0's to enter the country. Now it's just going to be a matter of time. It's like courting a lady ... I have to get to know the new bike, and along the way she's showing me that I need to respect her. Please contact me if you're on the fence about buying this bike. Weaknesses:So far I have not found one.
Similar Products Used:First full Full Suspension bike I have had.
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:This is my first full suspension bike and I am very excited to get to ride this season. My old bike was a GT Karakoram and I have had it since 1999 so it was time to update and this is a good year to do it. I had narrowed it down to these bikes Gary Fisher Cake 2DLX, K2 Lithium 4.0, Trek Liquid 25. The first thing I did is look at the components and to me it looked like the Jamis had the best package as far a shocks and shifters. The weight was about the same with the three (all though I don’t know if I ever did find the weight on the Trek). The next problem I that no one had the K2 so all I got was read reviews of that in magazines, there was and still is no review on this site. And the Trek I did find last years model but the shop said they wont be getting any more unless they get ordered by someone. The Fisher, a local shop did have that one but the biggest problem was the frame was to large the 17.5 was to big for me (5-7 and about 30 inseam) and they did not have the 16 but the stand over is 29.2 on that and my old GT is 29.5 and I always thought that was to high. The same problem on the Trek the stand over 29.2 felt very big for me and the top tube was a little to short. So the Jamis is still 29.17 but every little bit added up for me. I never got to even see a Jamis around here and all the local shops said they had never even had one, so I took my chances and ordered one and it finally came. I am very happy with my choice the few rides I have managed to get in I love it (I bet I would have loved any of the going from hardtail to full suspension) I am very happy with the way the bike looks compared to the other too, I know that should not matter but you got to look good right? The only problem I foresee is the tires, it gets real muddy here in the spring and they don’t have the best mud reviews on the tires, an upgrade may be on the way. So any way when I get some more miles on it I will let everyone in on how I am doing with it.

Strengths:Well built, looks great and rides even better. The SPV combo of front fork and rear shock works well. When dialed in it is not as stiff as a hard tail but basically no bob at all (which is nice since they changed/dropped the Horst Link). The amazing thing is that the suspension is incredibly plush yet stiff for pedaling....very cool.

Bottom Line:This bike rocks....The combination of the long suspension, 2.3" tires, and strength of the cranks make this bike feel like it can climb anything, roll over everything, and stop for nothing. I have climbed muddy, wet hills that only my hardtail could climb. The geometry makes for incredible descent control. I will post a follow up review once I get it out on some courses where I can compete against others times. On my own tracks, I am running better than my Jekyll or hardtail. This bike is very comfortable to ride and will make an awesome 24 hour racer and incredible trail bike....I honestly will try running this bike in some races and see how it does versus traditional XC bikes. I am moving faster due to great descents but also strong climbs thanks to the SPV. Depending on the courses and their conditions, I will also be trying some XC 1.9 tires to lower rolling resistances....

All of my riding so far has been in wet and muddy conditions and the 2.3" tires and SPV have worked together to give great climbing abilities. The suspension is very tuneable and can go from really stiff to super plush. Bombing downhill is great and the bike feels very nimble, even with the suspension set very plush. Overall a great trail/XC ready bike and only limited by the riders skill and conditioning....
