Bike Setup:
Full XTR, Rock Shox Sid Race Forks, Terry Fly Saddle and Panaracer Fire XC Pro's, but everything else is stock out of the box.
Bottom Line:
This bike is Smokin'. My 19" steel ride with Sid Race forks weighs in at 23#'s. I didn't swap much; just the forks, seat and tires. It climbs like it has it's own motor. Definately one top of the line racer! My highest rating!

Weaknesses:
flex in rear triangle when hard braking, a little heavy. nothing a carbon brake booster and lighter wheels can't fix.

best set-up for out of the box race bike i've seen in a few years. jamis did a real good job at matching frame & fork to components.for the price range the dragon is hard to beat.

Resiliant ride combined with excellent climbing stiffness, light for a steel frame

Overall bike weight (out of the box) from Jamis a bit heavy for this class of bike (24.5 lbs. 19 frame)

Bike Setup:
853 Reynolds frame, full XTR, Manitou SX Carbon fork, Ti Hope hubs with Ti spokes, Mavic 217 rims, old Onza H.O. pedals.
Bottom Line:
Outstanding climber. Manitou fork just blows away the old Mag 21 from the last Dragon, with 20mm more travel and greater stiffness. Resilient ride, but overall a bit stiffer than the '95 cromoly (Prestige) Dragon. XTR components are the best. Best climbing bike I've ridden. Bike has RADAR in the singletrack. Out of the box, bike was a bit hefty at 24.5 lbs. Adding my old Ti-spoke Hope hub wheels and lighter (Onzo H.O.) pedals lightened the bike to 23.75 lbs. which is acceptable. Grip shift, lighter saddle/seatpost would shave another 200 grams (1/2 lb.) but the XTR shifting is too good to lose. I prefer it to Grip Shift, which I had on the 1995 Dragon. Good move, Shimano on the 34 T rear cog. Lets you stay in the middle ring more easily.

Great ride. Mega 9 system works better than expected. Frame is stiff and comfortable. Manitou SX-Carbon is stiff and smooth. Handling is very reactive, but not to where you have to pay full attention. Overall, the best bike I have had to date.

Bottom Line:
I recently purchased the '99 Dragon through the Jamis Backyard Racing Team and I must say that the '99 Dragon is the best deal for a complete XTR equiped hardtail. Riding the Dragon was a dream!The Reynolds 853 steel frame rides incredibly smooth, and the frame soaks up small vibrations that make it feel like you are riding on the road. Climbing on the Dragon was made easy by the new 34 tooth rear cog developed by shimano. I never found myself using the granny gear even on the most challeging hills. The new Manitou carbon fork was great at taking up all the obstacles in the trail and the Time pedals NEVER clogged with mud! The new and improved Dragon has definately earned a 5 star rating with me! See for your self!

Are you kidding? By the numbers , a Reynolds 853 frame , FULL XTR , SX Carbon fork , $2100.00 ...The best racer on a budget bike available . Besides , it's red , and it's steel . Perfect 10's..
