Strengths:Very light (30 lbs), very durable bike. Great setup. Gears are very good with no skipping.Awesome fork with lots of adjustments including infinite travel with a switch on the handlebar. Love the Juicy Sevens.
Weaknesses:Hutchinson Spider tires are soft and wear easily. Paint scratches very easily.
Similar Products Used:None so far this is my first good mountain bike.
Bike Setup:Everything stock except MTB platform pedals.
Bottom Line:This is a awesome bike for the cost. This bike tops some $2000 and maybe even $3000 bikes. I love pretty much everything and I dont think it can get any better. Jenson USA is a great bike shop. They offer the best prices on Jamis includng a Jamis Diablo 1.0 for only $1500. They ship by air and my bike got here in two days from California to Edmonton. Jamis bikes rock. This bike is for anyone who wants a top of the line bike for a good price. Overall this bike rocks.

Purchased At:The Alpine Shop
Strengths:Components are awesome. You can't beat the price. Bike is bomber except the rear chain stay (but see comments below). If you are looking for that XC full suspension or even the ocassional downhiller this is a great bike.
Weaknesses:Rear chain stay, BUT I called my local shop, he took some pictures and within 2 days I had the upgraded beafier chain stay on its way. The local shop "The Bike Shop" put it all back togethor in one day so I could ride for the weekend. So yes the stock rear chain stays suck, but the upgraded 2005's are sweet. My bike is a 2004 demo and they still warrentied the part. SWEET CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Similar Products Used:Gary fisher cake DX, GT I-DRIVE, Iron Horse (Suck for XC they are too heavy)
Bike Setup:Upgraded handle bars and seat post to race face light carbon fiber. Also upgraded saddle. Stock is not that good.
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money. Don't worry if you have a 2004 to 2002 older model, if you break the chain stay most likely Jamis will still warrenty the part.

Strengths:Very well rated
Weaknesses:Deceptively low price
Bottom Line:So many single chili reviews drag down this excellent bike's overall score. This bike was groundbreaking for it's time, and it can't be helped that some people rode theirs too hard. It was stupid of me to ride my 1998 Giant at Todnau. So to counter Mike who dragged down the ratings with his sob stories, I'm posting this. This bike always, and forever deserves it's 5 flamin' chilis, and that's just what it's gonna get.

Strengths:rides well
Weaknesses:customer support, poor design
Bottom Line:I tried to send this email to Jamis, but there is no contact link whatsoever on their site: no way to call or email at all. I STRONGLY encourage you to read this review before buying anything Jamis.

Hello,

I am a REAL mountain biker - I ride the epic mountains of Santa Cruz, Ca about 3 times a week. I do no freeriding (no drops more than 3 feet), just standard all-mountain stuff. I weigh only 150 lbs, and know how to maintain my bike, and properly set my fork and shock. I ride with many of the locals, 90% of whom ride Santa Cruz, and Specialized bikes. Last year, upgrading my short-travel Cannondale for an all-mountain breed, I was deeply influenced by Mountain Bike magazine's "Bike of the Year" reviews of the 2003 Jamis Dakar XLT 2.0, and decided to purchase one. Upon receipt, I was stoked - the bike rides like a dream: the four-bar linkage does not move when I crank hard uphill, yet soaks up bumps like a sponge on the downhill. And the fork is just awesome. I took this bike to Downieville, Ca, and Moab Utah, several times and it treated me well in terms of the ride. I bragged to my friends who spent $1000's more for their Santa Cruz Blurs, and Specialized Enduro's; that they wasted their money on name brands and hype. Now, a year later, I feel quite differently..

3 months after I purchased the bike, the bearings blew out in the rear linkage, requiring over $100 to replace. I was told that they were improperly installed, that the torque was incorrect, and that it was builder error. I believed it. About 4 months after the purchase, I broke the rear drop-out, and it took nearly two months to get a new one! A REAR DROPOUT!! I rode my old Cannondale in the interim, which was annoying to say the least. I wrote several emails similar to this one, which I believe actually expedited the shipment!! Now, a little more than a year after the purchase, I noticed substantial sway in the linkage, and spent almost $200 replacing every bearing in the rear linkage. The lateral give is still there. On top of this, I find that the chainstay was cracked through two "weight-saving" carve-outs, and required replacement. The answer: a 2004 chainstay which is grey and does not match, but doesn't have the carve-outs. I don't care about the color, but was insulted when told I would void the warranty if I painted it!! Now my bike is not only funny looking, but doesn't ride!!

So, now I've been waiting for the one bearing that I didn't replace for almost a month (the one closest to the seat) , because it is on "back-order". Heck, even the local shop was talking trash, saying that this is why they don't sell Jamis mountain bikes, just the family units...

Final beef: I've noticed over this past year that the frame bottoms out before the Float shock: an obvious poor choice in shock stroke: this is the only bike I've ever seen to suffer from this. It requires that I set the shock extra stiff so that I don't break my frame. I guess I know where my savings went...

At this point, I'm pretty fed up - I've been a Jamis advocate for a year, despite my woes. I've really tried to support you guys. Now I ride a bike which rides very well, but is perpetually broken, with mis-matched parts, which is only a year old!! It is apparent to me, that this bike was not designed for real riders, and probably does well when used twice a year. Unfortunately, i am not one of those guys. You should understand: this is really bad PR. I have been touting your products, despite my issues, for almost a year, and just can't find one reason to do so any more... the ride alone won't cut it. I'm pretty much ready to dump the Jamis on Ebay, and pick up a Santa Cruz, Specialized, or Rocky Mountain. The dozen or so riders and shop guys I ride with will definitely notice my transition, something I should hope you would be concerned about.

Favorite Trail:94' World Cup

Price Paid: $2000.00
Strengths:This bike is amazing!!! I have taken it to hell and back, with very few problems. This bike can take alot of abuse for a cross country frame. I've done a few four foot drops with no remorse. I've been riding this bike very, very hard for two seasons.
Weaknesses:I've only had a problem with my TALAS fork, It was my fault not the fork. There's only so much that an air sprung cc fork can take, and I pushed it beyond its intended limits. The TALAS is a very tough fork though, it handled a lot of downhill abuse before it broke.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro, Santa Cruz Heckler
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock except for Tioga DH team tires (works great in all conditions). A downhill stem is the only other thing I've changed.
Bottom Line:I've enjoyed this bike on a veriety of different terrain from singletrack to 4cross courses to dirt jumps to lift access double blacks. It doesn't hurt that I only weigh 145lbs. If you can land smooth you can go big. This bike is worth a lot more than the $2,000 I spent.

Strengths:Fox front and rear. Hayes. Climbs very well for a 30ish pound bike - descends even better. Perfect geometry for me.
Weaknesses:Reported chainstay problem (none for me to date). Shop brand seatpost clamp, Koski stem and handlebar, Hutchinson tyres.
Bike Setup:Panaracer Fire XC Pro tyres, Easton Monkey Lite CT2 handlebar, Race Face System stem, Easton EC-70 seatpost.
Bottom Line:A great bike that does just what it's supposed to do. It isn't as flash and high profile as some similar bikes. I have ridden it on epic 60km Alberta Rockies rides with XC racers on hardtails and managed to stay in touch on the climbs and completely lose them on the descents. Changing out a few heavy parts has taken mine down under 30 pounds.
You simply cannot buy a similarly specced bike for even close to the money. The one thing I have noticed is that thieves aren't interested in it either. I have two friends whose bikes were stolen while being stored with mine and mine was gently set aside. One was a Rocky Slayer and the other was a SC Heckler.

Bottom Line:This is a follow up to my post below and the problems I had with parts and Jamis customer service. Things seem to be a lot better. When I personally got ahold of the right person in warranty, a part was on its way to my bike shop the next day. I then received a follow up from the new warranty manager at Jamis and it seems like they are making changes for the better. Also, I was able to find derailleur hangers so I bought 3! The bike has been working great the last few weeks.

Strengths:This Bike is the bomb, don't let anyone tell you different. You ride cross country, no problem, it's light enough, you want to huck off a 5 footer, no prob, plenty of cush. This bike brings a smile every ride. component package is great for the $$. The fox talus soaks up everything you throw at it.
Weaknesses:Chainstay.. Cracked it at the weld last night. I was concerned after reading reviews about how difficult it would be to get my ride back up and running. Let me tell ya...... I called Jamis direct this morning and asked for customer service I left a message with a Rep fearing the worst. I got a call back within a couple hours. I explained my problem, and he said NO PROBLEM. He told me to bring my ride to my nearest dealer( Cutting Edge, Kensington) He said they'll ship the part and will have it by the weekend all under warranty. If that aint Customer Service, I don't know what is. thanks Kenny....thanks Adam..

Bottom Line:I would recommend Jamis to everyone. Great Bike, great service, happy as hell.

With all the abuse you but on your bike, you have to expect something to give once and a while. What makes a bike company standout is thier ability to not only build a quality product, but be able to provide service for that product when it needs it..

If your not happy with this bike, buy a ten speed and give up the woods.

Strengths:I love the fit and ride. When I first got it I thought it was amazing and plush.
Weaknesses:The bike was delivered with a bad rear shock. Kissed the seat tube BAD. Hayes break line failed in month two. The mechanic said the fork mounts were bent. 8 months in I broke the right chain stay. Took three weeks to get a new one, I had to borrow a bike from a friend. 1 year in the black shock failed and had to be rebuilt off warranty. A week later I broke the rear triangle at the shock mount. Jamis replaced my frame after I raised hell with the rep. Joes has been cool through it all but they sort of infer it is rider error. I ride with two ex mechanics from Joes and they call the bike the "Shamis". I just got off a ride were my chain stay broke while I was descending a little hill I tweaked my knee and I am supposed to go out of the country to surf in two weeks. I have had enough and I will call my lawyer in the morning. Do not support this product you will be sorry.

Weaknesses:Chain stay, but has been redesigned.

Bottom Line:For the prices this bike is great. I did have a problem with the chainstay, but Jamis got right on it for me. This is my 3rd Jamis bikes, and I have never had a problem with their customer service. Perhaps it is the your local bike shop and their relationship, mine always gets the part within a week usually, but always less than two. This bike sucks up everything (especially with the monkeylite), and can climb great as well. My bikes hold up just as well as my friends (after the OG chainstay was replaced), and their frames cost more than my entire bike. What else can I say. Also Fox, Fox, Fox, components are wicked.

Strengths:Ride, price, components, TALAS (great fork), geometry (feels great up and downhill), horst link (more active than the pseudo four bars out there), thomson seatpost
Weaknesses:FRAME, FRAME, FRAME (pivots and chainstays are underdesigned), Jamis customer service, heavy wheels, cheesy stem/handlebar
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro
Bike Setup:Exactly Stock
Bottom Line:You have to give Jamis credit for putting out a 5" bike with name brand components for less than anyone else. You just have to understand that there are comprimises that come with paying less. Jamis customer service is *horrible*. Why is this a problem? You'll find out when your frame breaks, or your pivots develop slop, or you need a new derailleur hanger. Consider the reputation of the I've learned my lesson!

You have to understand what you're getting. Jamis is a bit deceptive with this bike. Just because it's 5" of travel doesn't mean this is inherently a burly bike. Remember, the XLT is the Dakar with the travel increased. The pivots, linkages, and frame are NOT burly (check the BB area and the bell crank) as you can see from the reviews of those that have had the bike for a while. The fact that you can swap out the wheelset and build this bike out at 27 lbs and change should indicate that this is not as solid as a Heckler or some other burly 5" trail bikes. The frame is really pretty light to get the weight near 30 lbs with the heavy wheels that come stock on this bike.

In terms of design, Jamis definitely underdesigned the bottom bracket/ chainstay portion of the frame. The pivot areas are skimpy too. They redesigned (I'm told) the chainstays midway through 2003. Of course for 2004 they totally redesigned the rear swingarm (no longer has the Horst link).

Overall, a great value for a light duty 5" XC machine. The frame would probably be sufficient for slower and/or lighter riders. If you're north of 180 lbs and like to ride fast look elswhere, or just buy the bike and enjoy the frame while it lasts. Remember - the components justify the cost of the bike. The frame is practically free.

All frames break, even the best & most expensive. It's what the manufacturer does when breaks happen that separates the high end bikes from the low end bikes. In this area Jamis's low end price starts to make sense.

2 stars for value because of the poor CS and frame design
3 stars overall, because it really is a good riding bike

Strengths:Great ride when it's not broken. ** BUT BEWARE **
Weaknesses:Jamis service. ** I HIGHLY ADVISE NOT TO PURCHASE ANY JAMIS MOUNTAIN BIKES UNTIL THEY FIX THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE PROBLEM ** I lost the 6 best weeks of the season last summery because I couldn't get a new derailleur hanger from Jamis. It sat collecting dust while the season blew by. The same thing is happening this season with a broken pivot bearing/bushing. It's been 2 weeks and my bike shop can't get the part from Jamis. Now I'm really concerned because of all of the similar complaints I'm finding below and at many other bike review sites on the web. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Bottom Line:Great ride when it works, but can't get parts from Jamis. I would rank this bike a 5 (value for the money) if it didn't break so easily and if Jamis would actually respond with parts.

Bottom Line:this bike sucks. ive broken about 7 cartridge sealed bearings at the seat stay pivot point. to get replacements takes about 1 month. after 2 orders of bearings, jamis finially sent a new rear triangle which fixed the bearing shattering problem for about 40 miles. then a weld on the chainstay broke completely in half when taking a 2 foot drop. now im writing this as im looking at new bike prospects because i cannot ride this bike any longer. i have plenty of time because i wont recieve a new frame replacement for about a month or so. keep in mind that the warranty dept. doesnt seem to care about me or my problems with the "bike of the year". my 03' bike season was basically ruined because of this bike. its not good when your riding in montezumas revenge when your bearings start breaking. if your looking for quality and service, dont look at jamis.

Strengths:Light Weight, feels solid
Weaknesses:Keep an eye on the chain stay fastners. They came a little loose and caused the rear wheel to woble while not under pressure.
Bike Setup:Custom Built. Avid Brakes, Shimano XT/LX Drive, Answer Manitou Fork, Sun Rims, WTB Seat, Panaracer Tires
Bottom Line:Ok this is my first Full Suspension bike. However, I've been mountain biking for 4 years now and have to say that Jamis makes some of the best feeling bikes I've ever riden. Their frames instill confidence and back it up with performance, quality and balance. I've ridden this bike about 7 or 8 times, or enough to get it setup the way I like it. The last time I had it on the trail I was doing about 25 mph (according to my cateye cyclometer) and it felt great. Now to some people, probably not all, that might seem slow but this trail is about 18" wide and rocky as all get out. Rocks being about 2 - 5" in diameter - you know the ones that are just big enough to huck you off the trail if you hit it at the wrong angle. Anyway I try not to ride above my limits, but that day I did and didn't even realize it. It felt as if the bike was doing all the work and I was just there for the ride.
Going up: Its not quite as light as my hard tail but I knew it wouldn't be when I bought it. That makes it a little harder to go up hills, but with the rear shock I found myself going over roots, rocks and stumps just to see how much it really helped. It does; stuff that I used to stop me now is fun to go over, just because I can thats why. Anyway I read the other reviews about this bike and alot have said they had problems with the seat post - I've had none as of now. We will see how that goes on rides longer than a couple of hours.

One complaint though: The headset - there is only one headset you can buy for this bike, and its not super easy to find. Its a Cane Creek ZS-2 (Zero Stack 2). From what I understand alot of GT's use it. I wish that this was listed on Jamis' website. I built this bike myself and that was the only problem that I ran into.

Bottom Line: Buy it if you want a bike that you can take on rocky, rutty and rooty trails. This thing will take it all up. Also if you want to do some light hucking or light down hill this is it.

Strengths:Value - Control-excellent ride- Just feels great-
Talus Fork + Float lock out rear suspension are Both excellent. I'm also happy with the frame.
Weaknesses:Seat post quick release - I am continuing to increase torque, trying to prevent seat post slippage. Either the increased torque will fix problem or will snap bolt( I'm planning to upgrade to a hex screw).
Original Hutchinson Mosquito tires had poor sidewall grip for my taste, the Rithcey Z-max made a BIG difference. I have also had my derailer hanger straightened twice and plan to replace, and the Talus fork seal is leaking oil and needs to be resealed. I love the fork which still feels great, and don't expect the leaking seal to be a big problem.

I ride mostly cross country trails (no big drops) around Salt Lake, Park City and St. George, Utah. It is easy to put this bike exactly where you need it on trails and it feels great. The seat post and the tires are minor issues and will probably be corrected on next years model. I would definitely recommend this bike, but do be aware of the weak derailer hanger.

Bottom Line:The good new -
I like the bike more and more each time I ride it. It's cushy as hell, still shifts great, still breaks great (the issue with the break levers was fixed by adjusting the small allen-nut inside the lever). I stopped the seatpost slippage by 'lubbing' it up with chalk - yes it really works.

The bad new -
The right chainstay broke by the BB - Arrrggg! I'm 175lbs, and ride rocky tough trails but I don't drop anything more than 2ft. So what's up with the broken chainstays? I know of at least two others that broke in the same general area just by reading these reviews and talk in the Forums section. The LBS has been good about things by contacting Jamis immediately and I should be up and riding soon but so much for piece-of-mind - is it going to break again? If so when?

All I can say is inspect your frame after each ride. I didn't even notice it while riding. After a fairly mellow ride, I put it up on the stand, cleanded it then found the break.

Bottom Line:This is an update, I've managed to get several rides in on the bike.

Really cranked down the quick release on the seat and it hasn't budged since. I'm very happy.

The bike continues to impress, it's very tough and soaks up every thing I toss at it. It excels over the rocks and roots we have up here.

Very comfortable to ride, shifts great, even under load going up a hill.

Climbs like a goat, I haven't noticed any real bob, haven't even bothered to lock out the rear shock yet.

Definately the best buy for the buck.

Strengths:Plush travel, simple design, looks, weight
Weaknesses:Potential to dent/"kiss" the seat tube when rear suspension bottoms out. I bottomed out once, did not do any damage, increased the pressure and have not bottomed out since. No other weaknesses.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro, Cannondale Jekyll and Scalpel, Giant VT and NRS

Bottom Line:I can't say enough good stuff about this frame. It carries my fat a$$ (210 lbs) and handles everything I throw at it. I don't do big drops, but ride on rocky, rutty trails. Virtually no pedal bob. The lockout rear shock is nice for long, smooth uphill rides. For the money, there is nothing better. I wish I had bought the bike complete as the component group is better than mine.

Strengths:Price, componentry. Best bang for the buck
Weaknesses:Not a true XC bike, not a true Free ride bike. Suits me just fine tho, as I don't go hucking off big things.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro, Epic, Trek Fuel
Bike Setup:Bone stock.
Bottom Line:I did alot of research on which bike I wanted to buy. I was coming from a Stumpjumper Pro, so this is my 1st full suspension bike. I was initially leaning towards the Enduro, but just didn't feel comfortable on the frame and it had alot of bobbing. I read the article about the XLT2 and decided to check one out. Of course, by that point all the Jamis dealers and Jamis themselves were sold out of the XLT2. I called all the dealers in a 3 state radius and no-one had one. One managed to dig one up somehow and I bought it.

It fits me very well, doesn't really bob at all even without the shock locked out. It has great adjustability and is super comfy to ride. My lower back has never been happier! Soaks up alot of the sharp impacts from roots/rocks that we have up here. Superior componentry for the price, especially when compared to Trek and Specialized.

The only problem I had was the seat post kept slipping down on me. Very annoying, I wish it had an allen so you could really crank it down. Geuss it's my fat ass weighing it down.

I really like the bike, looks cool (stealth fighter) and it works for me (190lbs) when alot of other bikes wouldn't. It's not a downhill or freeride bike, so while it'll take going off 3+ foot jumps, it's not the best suited for it. It's kinda a do it all bike, it's not very heavy so riding it XC is fine, but you have the travel to soak up all but the biggest jumps. I think I pretty much got the last one in the country, so if you want one, you're going to have to wait for the 2004's.

Strengths:Suspension adjustability enables this bike to kick ass on anything one dares to tackle. The value cannot be beat for a new bike. Looks tuff like Action Jackson.
Weaknesses:The frame is medium quality.
Similar Products Used:Any lightweight 5" travel freeride with slightly more xc oriented frame geometry.

Bottom Line:This bike deserves every bit of its recognition. For the components the price cannot be overlooked. The fox talas rlc adjustability enables excellent climbing ability by increasing the head tube angle followed by better than average descent with a quick adjustment. Head tube angle is a little steep for descent but becomes stable with practice and comfort with bike. THe bike can take 3'-4' jumps on the trail and in urban settings(stairs to flat concrete). HAVE HAD ZERO ISSUES WITH FRAME IN THREE MONTHS. I have put 300+ miles on this bike with a combo of xc, freeride, downhill, and even on the road with slicks. I am 190 pnds of chewed up bubblegum in a soup sandwich whos nickname is LLBC (lungs, legs, bicep, combo) and push my limits on every ride. The bike is solid. When and if the frame screames for mercy, I can buy a top quality frame to match the top quality components and still be within budjet. So can you! If you can find one, buy it. Use the extra money for a few personal upgrades and a gym membership so that you can do some squats and maybe hang with my power on the climbs.

Strengths:descends like a champ, really sucks up big drops (3+ feet), love the Fox Talus Float in the front, great specs on the bike for the price, full featured rear shock (lockout and rebound adjustment). 5 inches in the front, 5 in the back. Oh yeah, and the Hayes disc brakes are badass as well.
Weaknesses:Doesn't seem to corner well, may be the tires.
"The Kiss" as Jamis calls it officially mentioned in other reviews too. Doing bigger drops(3.5+ feet) causes the seat tube to contact a brace across the seat stays equals poor frame design/testing. So far I haven't dented my seat tube, only chipped the paint on it. I also crushed bearings at the pivot point where the rear of the back shock mounts ups. Both issues above seem to be problems for many people. Took Jamis three weeks to get me new bearings/pivot point hardware. Apparently thier warranty guy quick is the issue with that.
Doesn't climb as well as I like.
Similar Products Used:enduro, giants, lower end Jamis's, tomac

Bottom Line:If you're doing serious hucking stay away from this. If you like to do technical descents at speed on trails that still qualify as cross country trails, this should be the ride for you. This is my first full suspension, and I love it. It's a lot less abusive on my body, and I feel so much more in control. It doesn't climb anywhere near as good as my hardtail, even though it is pretty light. I think it's mostly due to the head tube angle which of course makes it better for descents. A good trade off IMO, as it climbs good enough. Long as I can keep it from breaking, it's a great bike.

Weaknesses:Derailleur hanger VERY weak. Minor cable routing problems.
Similar Products Used:My 1st full suspension.

Tough downhill sections that used to bounce me all over the place on my hardtail, immediately became easier, funner and... faster! Technical uphills are a little tougher, but the fun on the downhill makes it well worth it. I may ended up changing the seat post to set me further back.

The only real problem so far: the SOFT DERAILLEUR HANGER! I bent it the first time just laying the bike on its side! Does anybody know where to get replacement hangers? The bike dealers don't have them in stock and there appears to be no way to contact Jamis for this.

Strengths:Great component group for the price. Awesome fork! Powerful brakes. Super-strong wheels! Hayes disks!
Weaknesses:"The Kiss" on my frames seatpost tube (19" frame) is better described as a dime sized dent. It is bad enough that I cannot lower the seat very far for freeriding, the seat post will not slide past the dent.
Stock tires suck in the loose dirt around here.
The frame needs protection from the cables.
Similar Products Used:First full-suspension bike...
Bike Setup:Other than replacing the tires, stock. Using Hutchinson Octopus DH tires front and rear. Stem will be changed next to something shorter. Stock saddle is soft and comfortable.
Bottom Line:This bike is a blast to ride. After adding slime tires(a must in NM) and the DH tires, my bike weighs 31#, certainly heavier than most XC full-suspension bikes. None-the-less it still climbs well and bombs great. Gotta love the Hayes Brakes!
As for the dent, Jamis knows that it is there. It got bigger after a 4' drop. It is NOT just a kiss! This is the biggest disappointment, as I am reminded every time I here a clank from bottoming out. I will try to get this worked out with Jamis later. Maybe I will get next years frame (hopefully problem corrected) as a replacement. Is this just a problem with the 19" frames?
Overall the bike is great. Climbs well, handles great, an absolute blast to ride! If in doubt, go ride and compare! Beats the Rocky Mountains I test rode, hands down!

Bottom Line:Even bone stock it's a great, great value!!! Yeah, I traded out the wheels but that's just the weightweenie xc racer in me, although this bike is far from that arena. And the only reason I am on Frogs is because of an 8-year relationship with the pedal. Just love 'em, and my 3 mtb shoes are set up for Frogs, so....

Excellent value, nice specs and geometry. As an all-mountain bike, you'd have to spend soooooooooo much more just to get the same.

The FOX TALAS 125 fork is a $700 fork, and is what separates this bike from others that come with crappy Rock Shox Psylo forks. Sorry, RS riders, but there is no such thing as a good Psylo compared to a Fox.

Oh, I also traded the HG50 cassette for an XT HG90.

With the Frogs and ligher wheels/tires (biggggg difference!) and cassette, I now have a sub-$2000 27 pound 5" travel trailbike that is no less of a bike compared to my friend's Tracers or Switchblades or anything else. Yeah, their craftsmanship might be better, but when I used to own $1500 frames, no one ever stopped me to admire the welds, and when the bike is dirty you can't even see the cnc'd machined whatever it is they have. Hey, I had $4000 to spend on a bike, but why?

Bottom line: It's the rider, not the bike. Why spend twice as much to go the same speed and distance?

Bottom Line:Picked up a 2.0 b/c nothing else came close in spec for the money. Was immediately comfortable with handling, both at speed and on ultra-tech slow stuff. The real surprise for me was its climbing ability. It's always a compromise, but the four bar linkage just plants the rear wheel. I imagine power loss on a really sustained climb would get old, but for your garden variety 10-20 minute east coast climb, the gains in control outweigh the losses in efficiency. Only concern so far is tubing integrity. Already some nasty dents from "dismounts". Although the tubing diameters are huge, and the junctions beefy, not sure about the dent resistance of the squared tubing. A couple came from very minor bailouts. Otherwise, I can't think of what else I'd be riding for the same money. This could easily be your only bike, although I'm not getting rid of my hardtail. Would recommend this bike to aggressive riders who like to pedal. If you just want to session a drop, go for something beefier. If you want to ride comfortably all day, check out a 2.0.

Strengths:The component/price ratio can't be beat.
Weaknesses:Cable routing causing 'frame-rub' as it traverses down the seat-tube/top-tube weld. Shouldn't be this much wear after less then 100 miles. This appears to be more than just the anodized finish rubbing off - actually seems to be impacting the aluminum. The frame NEEDS to be protected with cable-rub patch.
Similar Products Used:Nothing. Previously I rode a fully-rigid steel frame with cages and grip-shift and more XC geometry.
Bike Setup:Stock except switched the pedals to Time Zs.
Bottom Line:Mountain Biking is an all new experience from me on this bike. As mentioned above, everything has changed - no suspension to full suspension, cages to clipless, Grip-Shift to Rapid-Fire, XC geometry to 'Trail' geometry. All this change is good except (so far) for the switch to clipless - my confidence and hence execution has gone way down. I'm finding, painfully I might add, that Cliping out is not as easy as I would like. It takes too much rotation - yes I have doubled checked that the cleat is positions on 'smaller degree' release. But, I've not given up on them yet.

As I start to push 40 years old, full suspension and the more up-right geometry is seriously helping my post-ride disposition.

The full XT drivetrain is great - Except for some easily fixed cable stretch, this bike shifts like a dream. Switching from GripShifts to RapidFire was a much easier transition than I expected. The rear cog shifting actuation, both up and down, is excellent and shifting from a larger to smaller Chain-ring is extremely simple and smooth but the motion to shift from a smaller to bigger Chain Ring requires a longer 'throw' than I would like. Could this be due to mis-adjustment or is this just the way it is?

Not that I dislike them, but disc brakes (mechanical or hydro) are way overrated. The Hayes on this bike are quiet and stop you on a dime but so did my no-name V-brakes… Yes they are better than my old Canties but so are clothes-pins… I do have a problem with the brake levers - can only be used with my middle finger. If I use them with my index finger only, the lever bumps into my middle finger before it engages. I asked my LBS to decrease the 'play' but that didn't solve the problem completely and if they reduce the play any more they will engage with wind resistance.

As for the suspension, for me, there are more adjustment capabilities than I need (not a bad thing though). Except for the travel, which is set to full on both the front and rear, I have everything else set to it's 'middle-of-the-road' setting and have yet to change a thing. I do use the lock-out on road climbs.

Price Paid: $1899.00
Strengths:Amazing component set. Better comps than most bikes that cost $1000 more. Relatively lightweight (29 lbs) for a freeride bike. Talas Fork.
Weaknesses:The "Kiss". If you land hard and bottom out all your travel, it is possible to slightly dent the seat tube with the brace across the seat stays over the rear tire. You can't tell by letting all the air out of your shock and collapsing the travel but the frames does bend (elastically, no damage) enough during a hard landing for the brace to contact the seat tube. Jamis says the dent cannot grow more than it's original small size and does not affect the structural integrity of the frame. I don't know if that's 100% true but the frame is guaranteed for life so I'll believe it until I'm proven wrong.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro Expert, Giant VT2
Bike Setup:Stock, 19" frame. I set the rear shock (Fox Float RL) up a little softer than the recommended pressure for my weight and I love it just how it is.
Bottom Line:This bike rules! I christened it during a week vacation on Moab last month and it gobbled up everything, up and down. Light enough to ride all day (morning and afternoon rides almost every day) and it took the rocky lifts and downhill drops smoother than I could have hoped for. By the end of the week, I was launching 3-4 footers and getting agressive with lines I never would have thought about on my old Stumpjumper Comp.

The fork (Talas Float RLC) is incredible. You can dial it down from 5" to a little over 3" and is just sooooo smooth. The handlebars seemed a bit wide at first but then I got used to them and I started feeling like I was driving a truck over just about anything that got in my way, up or down.

There is no bike that even comes close to the value of this ride. Full XT, Hayes disc brakes, Time pedals, a $700 fork - even the seatpost (Thompson Elite) is awesome. You'd be hard pressed to find an equally well set up frame for under $3000, let alone $2000.

Aside from The Kiss (see above), I haven't found anything that I don't love in the short time that I've owned this bike. I'm going to be doing a LOT more riding this year now that I'm having as much fun on the dirt and rocks as I did in the snow this winter.

I was debating whether to buy this bike (a freeride bike with a XC bias) or a true XC full suspension bike, having come from a hardtail. If you in the same position, go with the bigger travel (ie this bike) if there's any possibility you might want to start riding bigger terrain. My roommate bought a Giant NRS1 this year and it was a efficient bike but nowhere near as fun IMHO and fun is what it's all about (I don't race). Travel is like width for skis - once you try it, you're only going to want more.

Bike Setup:I replaced the stem and bar to Thomson/protaper.
New set of tires.
WTB speed V seat.
SPD pedals.
Bottom Line:I'm very happy with this buy.
I climb throu tecnical sections like a mountain goat...
I wish the guys at Jamis would make it a bit more to the freeride side, to make it feel safer at high speed decents and drops - but it might be a personal thing.
If you are looking for a bike that does it all well - this is the best deal by far.

Bottom Line:So far, I've only gotten 3 rides in on her and she's treating me like a fine lady should. The talas is the stiffest fork I've ridden yet and it 'floats' along like a spring fork. My geometry fits the bike very well, and it feels very natural while riding. She feels very agile, definately lighter than she may actually be. The suspension soaks up the little and big stuff alike with no qualms yet. I haven't felt like I've bottomed either the front or the rear even though I know I have. The sucker looks good too. yippee for me! While not a purpose-built 'niche' bike, she can do everything well... a true jack-of-all-trades. As a trailbike/all-mountain ride, this is truly where she excels. This segment of the mountain bike population probably accounts for about 85% of the riders out there, so 85% of you should go buy this bike. Jamis rules!

Strengths:So far I am extremely happy with this bike. The XT drivetrain is great, the Fox Fork and rear shock have been reliable and I haven't had anything rattle or come loose. This bike climbs unbelievably well and there doesn't seem to be much pedal induced bob until I stand and try to crank too hard of a gear. The brakes work great and even the tires seem to hook up pretty good in the conditions I'm currently riding, of course that could change when the trails get dustier.
Weaknesses:The only thing I have been unhappy with is the saddle. The Fizik saddle caused a very bad case of numbness no matter how it was adjusted so I switched to a WTB Rocket V stealth and love it.
Similar Products Used:Last bike was a 2002 Giant NRS 1. It was a good bike but I wanted something more plush with a more comfortable riding position.
Bike Setup:Stock XLT 2.0 except for the change to a WTB Rocket V stealth saddle.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike that the more I ride the happier I am that I bought it. For the price I don't think anything else can touch it with the components that it has. This is a very comfortable and great handling bike that so far has performed to my expectations no matter what condition the trail is in.

Strengths:Sweet parts spec - "All mountain" capable: proficient on both sides of the mountain, and the best / coolest fork out there. I even like the seat: Fi'zi:k Plateau.
Weaknesses:Stock tires suck: Hutchinson Mosquito's
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Heckler, Bullit, Rocky Mountain Slayer, Cannondale Super V
Bike Setup:XT hubs, drivetrain and cranks, Fox Float RL in rear and Float Talus RLC up front: adjustable from 3' to 5'. Hayes fully Hydraulic Discs.
Bottom Line:This bike is the shiznit. Under 30 lbs, with up to 5" of plush travel all around. Front fork can be knocked down to 3" in 3mm increments, and locked out anywhere in-between. I use this, a lot. It goes down like a freeride bike, and climbs like a cross-country bike (with slightly odd geometry). The guy who wrote the 1 non-perfect review for this bike should maybe pay attention to the shop guys when they say to check bolts periodically for the first few rides: I rattled one of the four-bar linkages loose on my first ride, but I actually tightened it back up, instead of waiting for it to mangle the sealed bearing. Don't believe it - I got this bike for less than the combined parts would cost, and am only swapping out tires and pedals to make it my all-mountain dream ride. If I threw out the frame, I still got a sweet deal, but I'm keeping it because it's awesome. It even looks great.

Bottom Line:This is an awesome bike for the money. Climbs well for a bike with 5 inches of travel and hauls down the trail. The fox fork is real smooth. I'm very happy with this purchase. I ride four times a week and I wish I had time to ride this bike even more.

Strengths:Overall a great bike. I reviewed bikes for two months before making this (my next) purchase. I only have about 80 miles on the bike, although everything is going well. Great components and a solid bike.

I'm wondering if the one person with the bad review had a sloppy construction (he mentioned that it was a warranty replacement frame from a 02 Dakar comp) If you read this who put the bike together? Was the bolt tightened correctly? Also, in your description I’m assuming it was the chainstay bolt (4-way linkage design) attached to the top tube? I would like to keep an eye on mine.
Weaknesses:replaced handle bars (easton monkey) headset (king) and stem (thomson). Also looking into replacing tires. Going to add Fox FloatRL Remote Lock-out when back in stock.

Bottom Line:This bike felt the best of all the bikes I test rode before purchasing, including those listed above. I have ridden the Santa Cruz Blur over a weekend outing and although it is very nice, the ride is not that much better to justify passing up the Jamis. Especially with these specs! Also, you can't ask for a better suspension setup than this. This is a Cadillac for the price of a Chevy. No regrets on making the purchase.

Weaknesses:Frame is junk
Similar Products Used:GT Avalanche 2.0, Specialized Enduro Expert
Bike Setup:xlt 2.0 frame, all other componets from 02 dakar comp
Bottom Line:I got the XLT 2.0 frame as a warranty replacement for a defective 02 dakar comp. So I can only review the frame. After riding the bike for a month (apx. 150 miles) I started to notice some play in the rear suspension. What I found was that the pivot bearings at the top of the seatstay (where it attaches to the shock link) had ovaled out the holes in the seatstay that they press into. That or the holes were not round in the first place. This led to one of the bearings completely breaking in half and the other being seriously deformed. Keep in mind that I am not a huge guy at 185lbs and the biggest drop I had done was about 1 1/2 feet, which should not be a problem for a 5" travel bike. This, combined to the other problems which led to me getting the frame in the first place finally pushed me over the edge and I returned the bike for a full refund (I origionaly bought the dakar last may). I am now the proud owner of an 03 Specialized Enduro Expert, which not only rides better but should hold up ALOT longer. These bikes have almost the same parts spec and the extra $200-$300 is money well spent for a bike that will spend more time on the trail than in the shop and has a much better rear suspension design. I think I was probably one of the first people to get this bike (dec 24th) so maybe it was a dud but if you have one keep an eye on those bearings and if you are thinking about getting one you might want to look at other options.

Strengths:It's brand new! Stealthy.

Drivetrain is indeed silky smooth. The fork is like pure buttah. Lighter than my Kona Bear DL. Feels very solid and since I added the chainstay protector, makes no sound except for the tires on the pavement.
Weaknesses:It's brand new? No real weaknesses so far just changes to fit me better.

The cockpit for me seems a bit cramped. I had a Kona Bear DL in 19" last year and that was not as cramped as this. But this is not so bad that I wouldn't buy the bike. I have enough other bits lying around to make it fit me.

I can't seem to find many reviews on the Koski bar and stem .
Similar Products Used:Kona Bear DL last year. 2001 GT XCR i-Drive . Specialized FSR Enduro Pro 2000. Specialized Stumpjumper Pro FSR, GT Zaskar Le, Gary Fisher Paragon 1995.
Bike Setup:Stock for now but will be replacing the saddle with an SDG Grand Prix, the stock seatpost with a Thomson setback type, the grips with ODI lockons, and tires with Panaracer DH 2.3's and so I will most likely replace the bar and stem with a RF SyStem and Easton Carbon DH bar that I have.
Bottom Line:I just got the bike yesterday from Marc at Bicycle Outfitters - great job and fast service. They got it in the morning and called me to come get it by lunch.

I wanted to post my first impressions now and in a few months or so come back and give an update. So far it feels somewhat firm(no slop) in the rear without excessive preload (I'm 6ft, 235#)but not harsh. It is silky smooth up front and the FOX shock duo work really well together.

I don't race, never have. I don't look for stuff to drop off of or to test the durability of my neck bones. So this bike is pure fun for me. I will write and updated review in the next few weeks or months.

For me this bike at this price is deserving of the Bike Of The Year award and a very stealthy 5 Flamin' Chilis.

Strengths:Virtually everything... Can't find another bike with these components for under 2 grand!!
Weaknesses:Didn't bother with the Hutchinson Mosquito tires.. Swapped 'em with IRC Mythos XC's. Not sure about the stem setup..(Koski 110mm x 7deg rise) May look at a Thomson 90x5..
Similar Products Used:Paid my dues for 2 years on a Hardtail - GT Avalanche 2.0
Bike Setup:Stock except above mentioned tires & WTB Speed V saddle. Still trying to get the suspension dialed in.

Hayes XC Hydraulic Disc Brakes - Shimano XT Cranks, derailleurs, & shifters, Mavic 221 Disc rims laced with WTB Spokes, Fox TALAS 125mm Air fork (Rebound, Compression, Lockout with adj. blow-off), Fox RL Shock in the rear. Time Alium pedals.
Bottom Line:Some people dismiss this bike as too good to be true (good component selection equals crappy frame). After my first 20 miles on this bike I must tell you after 2 years on a hardtail I am actually FASTER on this bike! Climbs are actually EASIER!! I didn't think that was supposed to happen on a heavier full suspension bike. The Fox TALAS fork IS the air fork to ride.. Period..

The Geometry of this bike does lean a bit to the XC side, & it can get a little squirrley at speed, but I think it's more of getting used to how the bike handles. You be thankful for the steeper head angle when you are going up those climbs..

Another thing I noticed is that this drivetrain is very smooth.. You can't hear this bike shift at all.. I don't know if that is beacuse of the XT pods/derailleur setup, or if the suspension is just that good!!

Overall this bike is IMHO the best bang for the buck.. Worst case, if I ever want to get a new bike, I'll just keep the components and get a new frame... But I don't see that happening soon!!
