Submitted by Ed Dalton a Racer from miltary.. so all over the place
Date Reviewed: November 27, 2005
Favorite Trail:3 feathers
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:freebee
Strengths:GREAT FRAME... strong.. light... cheap... great color.. great angles for freeride hardtail
Weaknesses:.... had to much dust on the frame from being in the bike shop's rafters..
Similar Products Used:cove stiffy, P-2, P street
Bike Setup:Killer frame.. well thats all i got with it.. .. added a DJ2 with Z150 inters, bars and stem hand me downs off a big hit, a truvativ 180mm crank, Avid cable breaks, Mag 30 rims and DT swiss Hubs, and a blackspire guide.
Bottom Line:great bike...
i beat it hard and it has not broken yet...

when you add a 150mm fork the BB is just right for a 180 mm crank to clear so getting up to speed for jumps is mad easy.
when you get the bike stock... rip everything off.. then make it sweet....

Date Reviewed: January 29, 2005
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $99.00
Purchased At:jensonusa.com
Strengths:Price, braze-ons for adding racks.
Weaknesses:the green paint.
Bike Setup:Psylo race, purple hayes, hayes hubs on rhyno lites.
Bottom Line:I was confident that the frame will do fine for all my riding and it does. Use it on trail, but it has been seeing more commuting. Would like to lighten it up, at 29lbs currently, but rides light. Can't complain.

Favorite Trail:Cambalache
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:local store
Strengths:Everything.
Weaknesses:Chain hits the frame on jumps. Nothing a lizzard skin won't fix. Ohhh and the tires.... They are good but wear out very fast. If you decide to try them, please install Mr. Tuffy. (Already blew one on street workout)
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:My green hummer ! The color is somewhat weird but you will soon get used to it. It is an incredible package for the cost. Lightweight & strong. I installed a front black fender (topeak) and it looks great. I usually put 24 miles per week. If you ask me which hard-tail would I would buy now, I'll probably buy it again. As for next one, full suspension, I'll look into the Jamis dakar sport.
But that's a different category.
Bottom line, the green hummer is worth every penny.

Date Reviewed: May 21, 2003
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $115.00
Purchased At:JensonUSA.com
Strengths:Very light and strong frame for the price, great jumping and freeride geometry in the 14" frame
Weaknesses:A MILLION! No problems up front, but the whole rear end is made of dog poo! The disc tabs suck! I had to use a bench grinder to grind down my Hayes 8" brake adapter because the mount is too shallow and close to the frame, it had this bit of aluminum sticking out that was completely unnecessary. If they had not built it so dumb I would be able to fit the adapter on without grinding about 5 mm off of it. Besides the mount, my 8" disc won't even fit in the frame on an XT hub. At first it only slightly was rubbing the left chainstay, so I realized the disc was loose on one bolt so I tightened it, then it didnt rub, but once I started riding it was rubbing immediately and rubbed about 1 whole millimeter into the chainstay, so now I have this nice groove in the frame, but u can't see it because the disc is filling it... They made that angle of the chainstays too freakin' steep with their artsy curves and "making room for the tire." If they had made those chainstays straight and simple it would improve the quality of the frame so much, and it would cost them less money and time to leave them straight! The disc mounts need to be taller on the front or get rid of that extra flat spot that sticks out on it.

Bike Setup:2001 Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 1 with 20mm hub and Sun Rhyno Lite. XT rear hub with Mammoth. Race Face Prodigy DH crankset. Titec Hellbent DH bar on PowerTools 45mm DH stem. Hayes HFX-9 hydraulics with 8" rotors front and rear. LX shifters, LX Gold edition front and rear derailleurs, XT cassette, Titec seatpost and Koski saddle
Bottom Line:I imagine the factory built bike is awesome because you don't have to deal with all the crap they cause with crappy designing, but they pick parts that they know will fit, and they may not be the best for you. If you're going to build the bike yourself however, be ready to grind the lower side of the brake adapter down about 3-4 mm! I also suggest getting a 6" rear disc if you don't want to deal with the disc rubbing on your frame which ruins the integrity of the frame on the chainstay and could cause it to collapse. Overall it is an awesome frame which offers a ton of bang for your buck, but it isn't designed too well in the rear end and causes a lot of trouble during the building and tuning process. If you can find a different adapter for your brakes than the Hayes you will be much better off, and use something smaller than the 8" rotors in the rear. If you set up like that you should have no trouble at all, and the frame will be well worth your money.

Price Paid: $115.00
Purchased At:JensonUSA
Strengths:Very beefy frame, nice paint job, excellent details, geometry, etc.
Weaknesses:None yet... although frame is slightly on the heavy side.
Bike Setup:02 Duke SL 100mm; Avid Mechs (8" front, 6" rear); XT/LX drivetrain
Bottom Line:Excellent frame at a really low price! I was planning on buying a whole new bike, but for the money, it was a much better deal to buy this frame and build out with some higher level components and left over parts from my last bike.

Favorite Trail:French Creek Boone Trail
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Performance Bike shop
Strengths:This bike is awesome. The Hayes brakes stop incredibly, the shifters shift every time without any problems, the color is just cool, the tires grip like duct tape and the frame is built like a tank and the shock is great it absorbs what ever i hit with it and it comes with decent clipless pedals
Weaknesses:the fork boots don't stay attached to bottom and always ride up the shock but can easily be fixed with lizard skins
another thing is there is a lot of chain slap and can also be fixed easily with a lizard skin
Similar Products Used:specialized hardrock comp, giant iguana disc
Bike Setup:stock except for a nite rider evolution light for the nite rides
Bottom Line:this bike is friggin awesome. if you are looking for a great hardtail that isn't extremely expensive this is the bike for you. this gets 5 flamin chilis in both even though the fork boot rides up and there is chain slap this can be easily fixed with lizard skins

Purchased At:e-bay -it was bran new
Strengths:It is the 2001 model. The frame is really nice. It has disc mounts and is very stiff. The Maxxis tires have the most grip out of any other tire i have used
Weaknesses:The shok blows,it is a Rock Shox Judy TT. The preload nob broke with is 1 week. The brakes wear out very fast. It also does not shift well.
Similar Products Used:Giant Rincon, Specilized rock hopper, Trek 4300
Bike Setup:stock eccpt a new shok(indy xc), a shimano xt disc brake, and onza bar ends.
Bottom Line:It is a nice bike if you want to up grade your shok, brake system, and drive train. I think the 02 looks nice. I sugest bueing one if you could rather find one custom built. I would never pay the retal price. (750.00)

Favorite Trail:Rockville
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $649.00
Purchased At:Copeland's Sports
Strengths:This bike can climb like a billy goat, the manitou six super fork absorbs the hits like a sponge (100mm of travel) and the stock deore drive train is way reliable. The wellgo single sided pedals work well for those who are not comfortable going full clipless on difficult terrain i.e. rock gardens. Very good overall setup.
Weaknesses:The Hutchenson Mesquito tires were worn out after less than 200 miles of dry terrain. They are way too soft and puncture easily. Definately put liners in & slime up before you hit any trails.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock comp
Bike Setup:Stock except for the awsome Continental Survivor tires I put on last week.
Bottom Line:This bike kicks ass. Its an excellent package for the money I dished out. This bike is one for a beginner to grow into, an intermediate rider to enjoy and an intermediate plus rider to easily upgrade i.e. (XT drive train)

Date Reviewed: October 6, 2002
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Performance
Strengths:Deore components, Hayes HMX disc brakes, Koski items, Hutchinson tires, frame geometry, manitou fork
Weaknesses:Manitou fork, downhill pedals, the Camo Green paint (actually not that bad - you have to get used to it)
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper, Trek 4800
Bike Setup:Stock except for Terry Liberator saddle, Wellgo clipless pedals, Truvativ alloy rings
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money. You get full Deore components except for the Hayes HMX brake set. The Hayes brakes have an inside pad adjustment which allows for centering the rotor without shims. The Manitou fork is stiff at first, but seems to loosen up as you ride. Certainly, it is better than the usual at this price level (alloy steerer tube, rebound adjustment, preload adjustment). The Koski saddle is ok, but I like the Terry Liberator better (and it is a bit lighter as well). The alloy rings (all three) and the Wellgo pedals (along with the saddle) brings my bike in at 27 pounds (not the lightest, but not bad for this level of components). The frame geometry is different for 2002, and the bike is very quick. The frame is stiff and seems to transmit bumps more than my old Rockhopper, but the responsive (steep) head tube really makes it easy to avoid the worst. Many will not like the tires, but the Mosquitos work fine on the trails I ride (mostly hard pack with rocks and gravel, along with dirt roads and broken pavement). The pedals are ok, but I like full clipless and do not really like a one sided pedal. However, removing the Clip from the pedal reduces the weight and makes a nice platform pedal for true down hill and technical riding (or when you take the dog for a ride and need to dismount quickly). If inclined, you can get this bike down to the 25 pound range with upgrades (and the frame is worth upgrading).

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:Copelands Sports
Strengths:Hayes mechanicals, beefy down tube, wheels hold up solid. I ride hard down hill and beat this bike to death. It keeps coming back for more. Drops are taken easily once the fork is changed.
Weaknesses:The fork is easily blown. Get a Vanilla with 125 mm of travel and have endless fun. Derailer hangers bend and rear derailer breaks down also.
Bike Setup:stock except for new fork, and new rear derailer.
Bottom Line:Great bike for someone who wants to get better and not have to buy a whole new bike.

Favorite Trail:all
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $850.00
Strengths:Aluminum Frame, hayes brakes, all Shimano 27spd drivetrain, manitou fork.
Weaknesses:Colors, ugly one sided pedals.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6500.
Bottom Line:It took me a lot to change from the previous brand I owned, I´m happy I wasn´t fooled just because of the brand. Choice was right.
Bike is loaded with better components than similar bikes of other brands, and you pay less.
It rides smoothly and climbs with good agility. The brakes are outstanding. I expect to use it for a year and then switch for a higher Jamis model, Jamis offers excelent quality and design for the money.
