i beat it hard and it has not broken yet...
when you add a 150mm fork the BB is just right for a 180 mm crank to clear so getting up to speed for jumps is mad easy.
when you get the bike stock... rip everything off.. then make it sweet....

The color is somewhat weird but you will soon get used to it. It is an incredible package for the cost. Lightweight & strong. I installed a front black fender (topeak) and it looks great. I usually put 24 miles per week. If you ask me which hard-tail would I would buy now, I'll probably buy it again. As for next one, full suspension, I'll look into the Jamis dakar sport.
But that's a different category.

No problems up front, but the whole rear end is made of dog poo! The disc tabs suck! I had to use a bench grinder to grind down my Hayes 8" brake adapter because the mount is too shallow and close to the frame, it had this bit of aluminum sticking out that was completely unnecessary. If they had not built it so dumb I would be able to fit the adapter on without grinding about 5 mm off of it. Besides the mount, my 8" disc won't even fit in the frame on an XT hub. At first it only slightly was rubbing the left chainstay, so I realized the disc was loose on one bolt so I tightened it, then it didnt rub, but once I started riding it was rubbing immediately and rubbed about 1 whole millimeter into the chainstay, so now I have this nice groove in the frame, but u can't see it because the disc is filling it... They made that angle of the chainstays too freakin' steep with their artsy curves and "making room for the tire." If they had made those chainstays straight and simple it would improve the quality of the frame so much, and it would cost them less money and time to leave them straight! The disc mounts need to be taller on the front or get rid of that extra flat spot that sticks out on it. | | Similar Products Used: | Gary Fisher Tassajara | | Bike Setup: | 2001 Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 1 with 20mm hub and Sun Rhyno Lite. LX shifters, LX Gold edition front and rear derailleurs, XT cassette, Titec seatpost and Koski saddle | | Bottom Line: | I imagine the factory built bike is awesome because you don't have to deal with all the crap they cause with crappy designing, but they pick parts that they know will fit, and they may not be the best for you. If you're going to build the bike yourself however, be ready to grind the lower side of the brake adapter down about 3-4 mm! I also suggest getting a 6" rear disc if you don't want to deal with the disc rubbing on your frame which ruins the integrity of the frame on the chainstay and could cause it to collapse. Overall it is an awesome frame which offers a ton of bang for your buck, but it isn't designed too well in the rear end and causes a lot of trouble during the building and tuning process. If you can find a different adapter for your brakes than the Hayes you will be much better off, and use something smaller than the 8" rotors in the rear. If you set up like that you should have no trouble at all, and the frame will be well worth your money. | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

The Hayes brakes stop incredibly, the shifters shift every time without any problems, the color is just cool, the tires grip like duct tape and the frame is built like a tank and the shock is great it absorbs what ever i hit with it and it comes with decent clipless pedals | | Weaknesses: | the fork boots don't stay attached to bottom and always ride up the shock but can easily be fixed with lizard skins

The wellgo single sided pedals work well for those who are not comfortable going full clipless on difficult terrain i.e. rock gardens. Very good overall setup. | | Weaknesses: | The Hutchenson Mesquito tires were worn out after less than 200 miles of dry terrain. They are way too soft and puncture easily. You get full Deore components except for the Hayes HMX brake set. The Hayes brakes have an inside pad adjustment which allows for centering the rotor without shims. The Manitou fork is stiff at first, but seems to loosen up as you ride. Certainly, it is better than the usual at this price level (alloy steerer tube, rebound adjustment, preload adjustment). The Koski saddle is ok, but I like the Terry Liberator better (and it is a bit lighter as well). The alloy rings (all three) and the Wellgo pedals (along with the saddle) brings my bike in at 27 pounds (not the lightest, but not bad for this level of components). The frame geometry is different for 2002, and the bike is very quick. The frame is stiff and seems to transmit bumps more than my old Rockhopper, but the responsive (steep) head tube really makes it easy to avoid the worst. Many will not like the tires, but the Mosquitos work fine on the trails I ride (mostly hard pack with rocks and gravel, along with dirt roads and broken pavement). The pedals are ok, but I like full clipless and do not really like a one sided pedal. However, removing the Clip from the pedal reduces the weight and makes a nice platform pedal for true down hill and technical riding (or when you take the dog for a ride and need to dismount quickly). If inclined, you can get this bike down to the 25 pound range with upgrades (and the frame is worth upgrading). | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

Bike is loaded with better components than similar bikes of other brands, and you pay less.
