Purchased At:guy i work with
Strengths:hill climbing machine, price, all around solid bike
Weaknesses:i think they could have done alittle better on the front derailleur. other than that the bike is solid.
Similar Products Used:GT Timberline, Cannondale 400
Bike Setup:XT front and rear deailleur, Marzocchi dirt jumper front fork, XT cassett, Truvanti Blaze Crank, XTR BB, and Target $10 Tires.
Bottom Line:i think IBEX is one of the best bikes for the money. i have had nothing but joy with the 550 since i bought it. i wish they would return e-mails alittle more often. but i wouldn't trade it for any other hardtail. even though i have upgraded a lot. not that it needed it.

Strengths:Definately a great value for the DIY-type like me. As a person who likes to take things apart and put them back together just to see how it works, this presented a great opportunity. The alloy frame is decent, the powder coating on it is much prefered over the polished. All the components are quality parts. Compared to other XC hardtails found in LBS's this is good stuff.
Weaknesses:Nothing that I could find. The welds on the frame are ugly and could of been finished better, but for the money, I can deal with ugly. Well the welds on the Kona's aren't great either. The owner's manual did not have much to say about disc brakes or what to do with longer brake cables that had too much play. But my google-fu is good.

The double-sided setup sheet is very detailed in text, however for a engineer-type like myself, I would prefer a few pictures to word-associate parts to.

Ditch the toe clips, they are dangerous

Although they don't ship directly into Canada anymore, I had it shipped to a border parcel service, and had it brought across the border. No duty for some reason =). I only had to pay the GST as there is no PST on bikes in British Columbia.

Strengths:I found the bike to exceed my expectations. I'm a total newbie, but I tested a good handful of bikes and took a chance on this mail-order bike. From the newbie perspective, everything works great. The brakes are sturdy, shifting is fast and easy.
Weaknesses:I can't think of any.

Bottom Line:This bike exceeded my expectations (and I had high expectations after reading everyone else's reviews).

Jack had to deal with 3 phone calls of my newbie question before I purchased. Each time he was patient and thorough in his responses.

I ordered the bike on Monday at 2:30. At 2:37, I got a FedEx Shipping notification. I received the bike Wed morning.

In my haste to go riding, I opened the box and started putting it together. Took about 30 minutes. I guess if I took the time to open the packing list, I would have seen that there were instructions! Oh well. Didn't really need them and I don't know jack about these new fangled bikes.

My first ride was great. The bike felt very solid. I was thoroughly impressed with the brakes. I had no rubbing as other reviewers had noted. I thought the Trek 4300 and Jamis Durango 1.0 brakes felt cheap (but what do I know). These were solid as a rock. Shifting was very easy and I couldn't detect any weaknesses or oddities.

The fit of the bike was good too. I took a chance on a mail order bike and it paid off. I would have bought the Trek 6000, but my body just didn't fit the bike or something (but that is a beautiful bike. I would have bought it if IBEX wasn't in the picture).

Anyway, I'm very happy with my purchase. I haven't been on a trail, but hope to be soon.

Thanks to all who left reviews. I had a hard time finding any negative comments about IBEX bikes. I think my only moral issue was not buying from a LBS for the sake of supporting an LBS. But I work for a "dot com", so I had to support my brethren.

Favorite Trail:Anywhere I can find a challenge!
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:ibex.com
Strengths:Very solid, durable frame. Quality parts. Unbeatable price!
Weaknesses:Alivio front derailleur
Similar Products Used:Trek4300, 4500, 4800, Cannondale F400, F800
Bike Setup:Currently has '07 XT front derailleur, '07 LX rear derailleur, Avid BB7 front/rear discs w/Speed Dial Ti levers, Avid Straight Jacket cable set, Ergo grips, Panaracer Fire Pro XC tires, SRAM HyperGlide II cassette, Salsa Bashguard, N-Gear JumpStop, CrankBrothers MXR peddals.
Bottom Line:I preordered this bike, an '04 model, and received it in late 2003. As a Police Officer who is a "part-time" Bicycle Patrol Officer, in addition to my other “full-time” Departmental assignments, I had spent a lot time on Treks and Cannondales that my Department issues. I decided that I wanted my own mountain bike, as I had started to get active in “sport riding”. From that time until recently I have advanced until I was competing in the “Sport/Expert” class, all on a straight stock (except for CrankBrother MXRs and Salsa Bashguard) Ibex Alpine 550. I think referring to this bicycle as an “entry” or “beginner” bike is seriously under rating it!
All of the components on this bike have held up very well to more than 3 years of very aggressive riding. It has been through several chains, tubes, and tires, but the components remained stock until only April of this year (2007) when my rear derailleur finally gave up the ghost after it’s umpteenth direct impact with a log edge at full speed… By the way, this Deore rear derailleur has suffered several direct hits with rocks, logs, etc., and has always, until this time, been able to be bent back into shape on the trail and then continue to work perfectly for the rest of the ride!! (Something I have yet to see one of my fellow riders’ XTR or vaunted SRAM X9 or X0 do!!!) The Alivio front derailleur never worked that well, no matter how I adjusted it, so I intended to replace both the front and rear derailleurs with Shimano XTs (which I have also witnessed incredible feats of ‘toughness’ from them under real, and real hard, conditions). Blueskycycling.com, however, had such a great deal on the new LX that I just couldn’t pass it up. A brand new set of Avid BB7 with Speed Dial Ti levers was offered to me by a friend (who wanted to go straight to hydro’s on his new bike) for $75, so of course I bought and installed them!
All of this said, my Ibex Alpine 550 has remained my favorite bike, even and especially over my Department’s currently issued Cannondale Jekyll 400. This bike fits me (19’ frame), doesn’t flex, and has proven incredibly durable… I love it! My new ’07 Ibex Asta Pro is due to be delivered in two days, but I have no intention of parting with my ‘04 Alpine 550, and the Asta Pro will have big shoes to fill!
Who would I recommend this bike to? Anyone that wants a quality, usable, dependable mountain bike that doesn't have an unlimited budget... It's good for beginners to...

Strengths:This bike is amazing. It handles great, better then another bike I tried out. The components are of very good quality and the frame is surprisingly light (lighter then the other bikes i tried). I have been using it as transportation and recreation and it handles both equally well. On the trails it is like a gazelle on the road it is comfortable. Just a great overall bike.
Weaknesses:After only 100miles of riding I got a flat on my rear tire but that was mostly my fault. Other then that this bike is great for what it is.

Strengths:awesome price, good for entry level biking, solid beginners fork and disc brakes.
Weaknesses:you WILL be replacing parts, in four months i have gotten new chainrings ($100), grips ($20), saddle($80), tires(80), wheels(150), brakepads(20), pedals(80), and both deraileurs(100). i also added a front fender for fun. (20) i feel like i have invested in about what i paid for the bike ( 500 dollars extra) and am still not finished overhauling. i want to switch to hydraulic brakes and would like a better fork with longer travel but if that is going to happen i might as well just buy a new bike.
Similar Products Used:specialized stumpjumper (borrowed) santacruz chameleon
Bike Setup:frame, fork (marzocchi exr) and tektro disc brakes stock. all else upgraded.
Bottom Line:if you are serious enough to to spend $500 to get into mountain biking. you should probably be serious enough to spend 1500 on it and save yourself the time and money later on upgrades unless you are buying for your kid or something. this hardtail is heavy and i have had some problems with it. the fork barely (and i mean barely ) clears a 2.35 nevegal tire and i would like to run a 2.5 in the front. if you need a bike that runs now with no cash buy this. if you can stand to wait a couple pay checks then do it. don't be stuck some where without a decent bike shop like me waiting for part online until you can bike again.

I was looking at Gary Fisher,Specialized, Trek and a few others, but I kept coming back to Ibex, they have the nice components in a great package that eliminates the middle man. Honestly if your looking for the perfect Starter bike I don't know how you can pass it up. It was so easy to put together. I had no experience and I did very well with some help from the infamous B-Fro. A little fine tuning was needed by The Norwegian Hulk (Thanks Sean). Strengths:The Marzochi suspension fork, disc brakes, frame geometry, saddle, and rear derailer are all very good once they have been properly tuned. The price is excellent.
Weaknesses:The tires do not maintain enough traction during high speed turns or steep acents. Plan to replace them after they start to wear out.
Similar Products Used:Specialized hard rock, specialized rock hopper, Cannondale F400.
Bike Setup:Stock except for the addition of bar ends
Bottom Line:This bike is very responsive and easy to control on the trail. The bike unweights easily to ride over logs, and other objects while maintaining good balance. It seems durable so far and does not have parts that rattle or clank during fast downhill descents or small (18") drop offs. It is very strong on the uphills (minus the tires). I am really impressed with the quality of this bike and rate it somewhere between a Specialzed Rockhopper and Stumpjumper in quality. Both of these bikes are more expensive. Buy this bike if you want a good bike with quality components without paying a lot of money.

Strengths:Nicely made bike with qulity fit, finish and materials. Great value for the money. Compares well with bikes costing 100-200 dollars more.
Weaknesses:A bike is made up from a group of parts. Some you will naturally replace in time or wear, others right away. In this case, the tires did not suit my needs (mostly due to conditions where I ride) so I replaced them.
Similar Products Used:First generation hard-tail, non-suspension bike. Tested current local bike shop offerings in similar price range before ordering Alpine 550.
Bike Setup:Stock with Panaracer XC Pro tires.
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money when compared to typical local shop offerings. My experiance with Ibex has been a pleasure. I first called with questions and followed up with an on-line order - bike arrived soon there after. Assembly is a snap (required tools are included) and after some minor adjustments (to my preference) I was on the bike. Transitioning from a older (heavy) chr-moly bike, I find the Alpine 550 quite light and responsive. The suspension fork requires a little tinkering and I recommend getting a proper pump. First ride off road went well. I covered 15 miles of varying terrain and was able to climb and descend some very technical areas with confidence. The disk brakes are a huge plus. I look forward to getting more seat time soon. In my opinion, Ibex is serious about being in the bike business and offers a very competitive product. Don't be put off by the concept of a mail-order bike, you will be glad you did - I am.

Strengths:Price, value, components, overall product quality. Rides like a champ. Has lived up to every challenge I have put it to.
Weaknesses:It's a tad on the heavy side
Bike Setup:Stock with the addition of a Cateye Enduro 8 cyclocomputer.
Bottom Line:I've been very impressed with this bike. Great feel, components and quality. A previous reviewer was right when he said it'll take you longer to get this thing out of the box and cut the packaging off than it will to put it together. It's packaged quite well!
Go shop around at your LBS and even on the net, compare this to anyone else, and you'll see the value of the Ibex products. Quality is excellent. Customer service is GREAT. It is a little scary buying without trying on, but if you read the sizing guides, and TALK to the guys at Ibex, they'll help you out with the right frame size. I know, I was inbetween, and would have "guessed" wrong. I called them before I ordered, and they helped me make the right choice.
I like my Alpine 500 MTB so much, I just purchased my 2nd Ibex. Went for a road bike this time and got the Aprisa Elite 6500. I'll be reviewing it on roadbikereview.com in a couple months, but I fully expect to be giving the same accolades.

Weaknesses:Front brake rubs a little, a little difficulty adjusting.
Similar Products Used:none, last bike was a rigid 1992 Cannondale 500 series.
Bike Setup:stock, except for Cateye Velo 2 computer
Bottom Line:Pretty happy overall. A little disappointed in the time it took to recieve the bike. Ordered it on 12/30, billed and shipped out on 1/4, recieved it "on-time" on 1/10. Otherwise,no concerns. Real easy to assemble. All you have to do is install handlebars (shifters/brake levers already on handlebar), install pedals, put front tire on, install the seat (quick release). Put some air in the tires, and you're done. Real quick and simple. I dragged my butt and it probably took no more than 20 minutes. I think it took me more time to cut the bike and parts free from the box, than it did to install them. Didn't even have to look at the instructions. Comes with a multi-tool, and a wrench, so you don't need anything else. Everything was adjusted from the factory, so I just got on and went riding.

I would reccomend the bike to someone who wants decent components, doesn't want to spend a lot, and is comfortable with the most basic of installation, as is required.

I would suggest those who need something light, and on the cutting edge to look elsewhere. Regardless, probably an incredible deal for about $450 with shipping included.

Strengths:The price and components are great. The bike did not weigh too much. The brakes are awesome.
Weaknesses:The tires are almost wore out. They didn't have that great of a grip on lose soil when they were new. The back hub is some odd noise. I'll try cleaning and lubing them to see if that fixes them.

Trek 4500
Bike Setup:stock except for descender post
Bottom Line:This bike is a awesome deal for the price. Right now the price is 450 and if you are figuring out what bike you are wanting to buy then this bike should be it. Compared to similar priced and even some more expensive bikes This is twice the bike. When I bought this bike I was torn between the Trek 4500 and this one. This one has some components that the trek doesn't have such as the splined crankset and the trek is $100 dollars more. This is the best bang for the buck. I have riden the hell out this bike and it has had no effect on it except for the bhub. I have ridden up and down creeks with about 1.5 ft of water in them no effect on anything at all (the hubs were going bad before my first rides in a creek). I have have went down a few 2-2.5ft drops and besides a flat tire from a thorn no problems. The brakes will stop on a dime and if you are not used to disk brakes then you need to ride awhile before hitting a serious trial. I didn't and my first foot drop that I attempted was not a success. I touched the front brake on accident just a little which was all it took to stop and here we go over the handle bar. I love this bike which happened to be my first real bike. I did my homework and looked around a lot (approx. 2 months) before I bought this one and was not disappointed at all. I would reccomend this bike to anyone and without question. Don't worry about internet ordering the bike. My bike came pre-tuned and needed very little fine tuning before it was trail ready. The instructions were helpful. If I had to do it all over again i would by the same bike. This is a great hardtail bike. I give it 5 chilis on everything
Great bike without a doubt

Bottom Line:Skipping the local bike shop (LBS) was a tough decision to make, but it was well worth it. The quality of this bike rivals that of mtb's costing more than twice as much. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The bike arrives securely packed in a box about 3'x5'. Assembly instructions are not that great, but a little common sense goes a long way. You need to attach the handlebar to the stem (4 screws), the front tire (quick release), the pedals (easy), and the seat (quick release)- thats about it. After about 1/2hr I was out the door. One thing I forgot to do was to adjust the preload on the shocks, so my first ride was a little spongy, but 5 minutes and a quick peek at the shock's manual later and I was properly set and out the door again. Ibex includes two tools and a bottle of touch-up paint with all of their bikes - a nice touch. Dollar for Dollar, this bike has the best selection of components for the money. It seems that by selling direct, consumers are spared the markup typical of a LBS. If anyone is considering purchasing from Ibex and hesitant because of quality concers, I can assure you that the Alpine 550 is a quality product on par with higher priced models from Giant, Trek, and Specialized. I'm glad I found them and I hope others do the same.

Weaknesses:Over all I would have to say that I have not found any true weaknesses. During shipping UPS distroyed the box and there were a couple of missing parts, but I called up IBEX and they shipped out the missing parts for free. Customer service was more then helpfull.
Bottom Line:For the cost of the bike, and the parts that you get on the bike, you just can't beat this deal. I have rode my cousins $900 bike and it seems to ride the same. Just need to do some fine tuning on the bike before I start hitting the trails really hard, but out of the box...WHAT A DEAL...

Strengths:This is absolutely the most bike you can get for the money. The components are of good quality, and excluding price everything about the bike seems to be equal to the name brands.
Weaknesses:The bike is 2 or 3 lbs. heavier than I would like.
Similar Products Used:I tried both a Giant and a Specialized in the $500 range (I dont recall which models).
Bike Setup:Other than adding a set of shimano clipless pedals and a cateye computer, the bike is stock.
Bottom Line:You just can't beat this bike for the money, I have been riding it for over 4 months now and it has been great. I have only had a few issues with it. First, after about 2 months It badly needed tuned, It could have used it when I got it, but I let it go for a while, the tune cost me $20 and the bike has been flawless since. Second as I said before it is a little heavy. Both of these negatives are very minimal considering that I only paid $435 + $35 (shipping) for the bike. I actually have a friend who purchased a $800 Trek a month before I got the Ibex, and is mad because he likes my bike more than his Trek. I don't know how you could not give this bike 5 chilis for an overall rating. Maybe compared to a bike that costs $1500 it will leave you wanting more, but you will never find a sub $500 bike that comes close to this one. Overall good solid bike with good components at an excellent price.

Strengths:Solid design with great components for the price. Marz EXR is da' bomb and the disc brakes are outta this world!
Weaknesses:None so far.

Bottom Line:What a great buy! My old Schwinn Moab had seen better days, but I didn't have a ton to spend on a new ride. I found Ibex here on MTBR and looked over their website pretty thoroughly. There was lots of good info and some very tempting bikes. In the end I settled on my Alpine 550 because it has a nice fork (Marzocchi EXR), disc brakes and a pretty fair drivetrain (Alivio/Deore) and all for about $500. I took a chance and bought it direct from Ibex on their website. I was not wrong, this bike rocks! I'm not sure I get why two of the reviews below only gave 4 chilis. One was for having a threadless headset/stem set-up, like you think a good bike would come with a quill stem these days? Only in Wal-Mart, my friend! The other didn't like the tires, or was it the tire width? I dunno. Mine came with really decent Kenda Koyote's in 26" x 1.95, pretty standard fare for stock MTB tires or maybe a little above average. I suppose they could have put 2.10's on it, but that's about all you could expect on a hardtail. It looks like it would take wider, maybe 2.35's, but I would be afraid of cutting down on the beautiful way this thing climbs. Anyhoo, I'd give 7 flamers if I could to make up for those guys. It's a heck of a nice ride for not a lot of jack!

Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Ibex web site
Strengths:Balance, drive train, brakes, finish, overall value for the money.
Weaknesses:Non-adjustable handlebar stem height. The seat seems very minimalist, but that's probably because my butt's too big.
Similar Products Used:I've ridden various bikes in the $150 to $250 price range. This is the first time I've puchased a higher-quality machine.
Bike Setup:Very easy assembly out of the box: pedals, handlebar and quick-release front wheel and seat post. No doubt the bike was assembled completely at the factory, tested, adjusted, and then partially dis-assembled for shipping. Excellent attention to detail by the assemblers, and they packed it well for the trip...arrived without a scratch.
Bottom Line:Initial impressions: This bike is a snowboard in comparison to the cross-country skis offered as mountain bikes by many retailers. You can get up and down some very challenging terrain without feeling like you need something the bike can't provide. Smooth and efficient controls, very effective gearing and brakes. Excellent choice for someone who wants to challenge gravity on two wheels for the first time and not spend a huge chunk of money. Needless to say, it'll get you over curbs and through vacant lots on the way to the store, too, but probably way more than you need if that's your only use for a bike.
I was favorably impressed by Ibex customer service. I ordered my bike over the weekend, it shipped on Monday and I had it by Wednesday, exactly as they promised. Really good service after the sale when I had some questions. Ibex Web site might be a little slow, but have patience, it's worth the wait. Pay attention to their sizing guidelines, if between two sizes order the smaller size for a MTB.

Strengths:Very Tight. Doesn't make a sound like my old bike. The disc brakes are great! I can operate them with 1 finger. Very easy to assemble. I have received favorable comments from real bike enthusiast about the quality components that are on this bike.
Weaknesses:The first thing I did was take off the kick stand. I also had to get a tune up after about a month of riding. I also replaced the tires because I wasn't happy with the width and the tread.
Similar Products Used:This was the 1st good bike I have bought. Previously, I had a dept store bike. I have rode my friends Trek hardtail and I like mine better.
Bike Setup:As speced on the IBEX website.
Bottom Line:Great Value! Good Bike! Just doesn't have the name. I highly recommend it!

Strengths:Top of the line components throughout the entire bike for the price. Company doesn't just slap on some Deore and make everything else cheap, the entire package is quality. Disc brakes work great and have held up well to some abuse. Bike is tight and handles very well in tight places. These shocks rock and I am a 220+ rider, so that is important. Very adjustable shocks with great rebound.
Weaknesses:Bike is a little heavy. Otherwise...nothing.
Similar Products Used:Giant in similar price range.
Bike Setup:Factory Setup. Changed seat.
Bottom Line:I was a bit skeptical at first of buying a bike online. After talking with the company(who has incredible customer service) I decided I would go for it. The bike came almost ready to ride. It was easy to put together and I was riding in under an hour. The price I paid for the components I received is mind boggling. My business partner who rides 3-5 days a week and races was absolutely blown away at the value I received. The only thing that needed a little adjustment was the disc brakes, but that didn't take long. LOVE the bike so far. It has handled well on the trail and the road. It is even great when I am pulling my daughter in her Burley Trailer. Fully recommend this company and their bikes. We got my wife one of their B-Seris Street Bikes after I bought my Alpine, and she loves that as well. I would recomend this bike to anyone who is not a pro/racer.
