Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:after you get used to 'em (if your like me and have been using rim brakes) they do exactly what they're designed to do. i've come trust these 'em completely.
Weaknesses:none that i'm aware of...
Similar Products Used:shimano m575 hydraulics
Bike Setup:'08 kona cindercone, rockshox recon race, fire xc pro's
Bottom Line:being my first experience with hydraulic brakes, i don't have much to compare them to, however, i ride ALOT, and never have had any problems other than warping the rotors from overheating on really long rides. i've never had to bleed them and i'm still using the original pads. they squeal and groan every once and awhile, but it really depends on the circumstances. i think they're fan freakin' tastic....

Strengths:look cool
Weaknesses:I have adjusted these brakes way to many times to try an achieve a smooth result. New pads after 2months of riding...lame. I have reset them, lightly textured them with sand paper (cleaning them), try rubbing alcohol, went from the 6 inch to the 7 inch rotors, complained at the shop, name it, everybody has tried, no avail, they still make my whole bike vibrate.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XT, Avid Juicy
Bike Setup:Gfisher HI-Fi 29er Deluxe, the Hayes came stock in a 6inch rotor on the GF. I was pumped I had always heard good things. THEY WERE WRONG
Bottom Line:Super frustrated that they are such a nuisance and don't even come close to my expectations. Buy something else.

Bottom Line:These brakes do what they are supposed to do. They stop my bike on a dime and have been trouble free. I noticed in some other posts they complained about squeaking. When I rode in really dusty, powdery trails they squeak. All the other brakes I rode did the same.

Weaknesses:no adjustment.
Ryde only pads (trail or above are not competible)

Bottom Line:At fist, they looked too ON-OFF. After one day i got used and they feels much better than Juicy 5, but Strokers needs to be warmed up every ride.

I would recommend them for freeriders and downhillers on a budget, but NOT for dirt\street because of the specific of work described above.

PS have fallen some tmes. The lever is still on its place=)

Bike Setup:KHS XCT 555, demo'ed at my LBS.
Bottom Line:these are nice brakes. the only issue that i had was poor service at the shop. these guys don't know nothing about real bikes! the demo rig was stored hanging off the wall. when i went to ride it, i got no braking power and smashed right into a tree. all kinds of air must have gotten into it. i came back and told the jackasses to fix it. they bled the brakes and they worked fine! if you are on a budget, or want good parts for next to nothing, go for these brakes. you won't regret it.

Strengths:I ride at least 100 miles a week in the mountains around here, and these brakes have worked flawlessly. I weigh 200 lbs so these brakes have their job cut out for them.
It is very important that you bed them in correctly, for them to work well. They do tend to get noisy, however with a little brake cleaner on the rotors they quite down.

Favorite Trail:The places people do not know about!!
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Price Paid: $99.00
Purchased At:EBay
Bottom Line:This is not a review, more an observation.

It would apper that there are a few people who have either been miss sold or miss bought these brakes. They are stated as being XC, AM & FR brakes. There is no mention of them being suitable for DH. I would apper that most of the problems (though not all it has to be said) are DH related. My addvice would be to stop being stingy and get some more suitable DH brakes. Also, although they come "Pre Bled" it is always a good idea to bleed any brakes before use just to make sure.

The moral:
ALWAYS CHECK THAT YOU BUY THE RIGHT BRAKES FOR YOUR INTENDED USE!!!

Strengths:Excellent control and feeling when stopping. I only have to use one finger to stop the bike, regardless of the riding conditions (note: the lever position can be adjusted with an allen wrench, as shown in the user's manual)
Weaknesses:Some noise may be produced at times (particularly when the brake is continuously used in big downhills and with low bike speed). I will try the Fibrax pads to see if they will solve the problem.
Bike Setup:Cube Nature 2009
Bottom Line:I highly recommend it! I put 4 stars on the overall rating just because of the abovementioned noise problem.

Strengths:Well made, cost effective. Plenty of power. Good solid lever feel. Love the design.
Weaknesses:"Stroker" graphics prone to wearing off. I guess this was caused from excess DOT fluid from the master cylinder running onto it the graphics. But it's hardly worth worrying about.
Similar Products Used:Hayes 9.
Bottom Line:These are great brakes. The lack some of the features of their bigger brothers like the lever adjustment. But all you need is an allen key to adjust them which most people carry while riding anyway.

Favorite Trail:Les Gets, France
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $180.00
Purchased At:Barracud, Belgium
Strengths:Cheap, hassel free, powerfull, reliable, low(no) maintainance, versatile (XC/freeride), hmmmm they do until now, everything a brake should do.
Weaknesses:No banjo fitting in master or slave cylinder. Hose is more easily prone to damage(as i've discovered)due to different cable routing. Reach adjustment screw turns all by itself during long decents,(after a drop of loctite that was cured).
Similar Products Used:Hope Mini, Hope M4, Magura HS22/33 en Clara and loads of old cable brakes.
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Heckler. Stroker Ryde 180/160, Progressive 5th element coil, RS Pike 90/140, XO, XT, Thomson, Mavic, Scwalbe.
Bottom Line:Cheap, cheerful and effective. I ride mostly XC, but i like to do stupid things every now and then,- like bike parks in France and Germany. Also ridden the Pas Portes du Soleil (mega downhills, 100km per day, two days long)twice with these brakes...NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. Like i said, just that little reach screw which needed loctiting. Of course there are more powerful, better looking brakes out there, i've had them, but they weren't as reliable and noise free as these.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $150.00
Purchased At:Clark tire
Strengths:Great modulation, more than enough power for XC/trail riding.
Weaknesses:Only 1 choice of brake pad material to choose from.
Bottom Line:I put these brakes on my budget XC bike. I've been using Hayes hydro's since I started using disc brakes, and just like the feel of them more compared to Avids and others. The lever/ contact point feels really good on these brakes. They have more than enough stopping power for XC/Trail riding.

Anyone using these brakes for DH/FR and giving them a negative review is an idiot. They weren't intended for those purposes, so buy the right brake for the job.

Also, anyone saying these brakes have no modulation is out of their mind. They modulate much better than any of the older Hayes brakes. IMO, modulation has alot to do with the user, and not everything to do with the brake anyway.

Bottom line, if you want a fair priced hydro brake for your XC bike I would definitely buy these. I found mine on sale for $150 for both F & R, so I have no complaints at all.

Weaknesses:Rear brake very poor and cannot be used, no immediate explanation for poor rear performance.

Bike Setup:Specialized FSR XC Comp
Bottom Line:If the brakes actually worked as they are supposed to I guess they would be very good. To date I have not been able to use the back brake due to bad vibration and noise, that vibrates througout the bike so bad I have to release the brake. Front is good, but I'm annoyed that this is affecting my downhill work. Levers are good and well positioned. Prefer mechanical any day.

Weaknesses:I feel like there is no in between. Either you are going full speed ahead or you are locking out. I crashed hard on my first ride on my new bike with these and I bent the rotor badly. After that there was no braking. We bent it back and they are working alright now. They feel cheap. The control is flimsy.

Strengths:Extremely cheap brake, cheaper than any other discbrake on the market.
Weaknesses:Terrible lever position which puts the lever far too far out from the bars (and im 6 foot tall and have really big hands.) and very little power and no modulation, you just yank on the levers as hard as possible and expect to vaguely slow down sometime in the distant future.

Bike Setup:Big Hit 1 with 888RCV
Bottom Line:These are good brakes. I'm swapping them over to my All Mountaine because with the 203 rotor they will perform very well there. However, for downhill I do not recommend these. The Avid Codes are way better in that area.

Strengths:Great modulation. Sweet lever design reminds me of my favorite BMX levers from way back in the day. Easy to adjust the lever pull with an allen wrench. Sweet grey color. Comes with complete bleed kit, and a bottle of hayes DOT fluid. Plenty of stopping power with these puppies.
Weaknesses:I just wish they came with the adapter to mount to fork/frame......come on Hayes!!!!!!!!

Bottom Line:Took a bit to bed the pads in, but once I did they work really sweet. My fork was leaking some oil, and it got on the front rotor, so I rebuilt the fork and cleaned the rotor with alcohol, removed the pads and burned them off with a small torch and all was good. I'm a big guy at almost 300lbs all geared up and ride pretty aggressive and these brakes stop me really well....never have I felt like there wasn't enough power, and they modulate perfect with a 180mm up front. I ride aggressive All Mountain, but if I start leaning more towards downhill I will go with the 8 inch rotor up front and 7 inch back. I haven't needed to bleed them yet, but might do that soon, just to upgrade the DOT fluid and change the pad clearance on the rear a tad. The grey color looks sick with my frame, and I really dig the lever design. Top Notch!!!!!!!! Might upgrade to the carbon version and put the Rydes on my second bike, but either way I'm sticking with the strokers for a long while. Dig em!!!!!

Bottom Line:My first foray into hydraulic brakes after being bitten by the MTB bug and upgrading my whole bike with the aid of Ebay into a pretty serious bit of kit, magaged to get these at half the retail price!

Read alot about Hayes before i purchased these but at half the price for a brand new set couldn't buy better and i have to say that if you do dial them in and set up properly, (take a bit of time), i cannot possilbily see how you would need anymore stopping power unless you delight at being launched off with every pull!!

For me they are perfect and the difference from my previous 'brakes' is a 1000% improvement you just have to give them some TLC and look after them....
