Bottom Line:This product is great. unfortunately i feel that the customer service with e-caps/hammer really blows. some of the flavors are almost unbearable especially when they get really warm on hot days. this stuff requires a flask for use and the flasks they sell you for the gel's SUCK. the lids dont stay on well and they are just really poorly made, id rather pay $4 for a flask that works better than a $1 flask that really sucks. my chilis include my experiences with customer service!

Bottom Line:This stuff rocks! It's not loaded with sugar-it's all the good complex carbs you need. I used to get queasy about 15 mins into a ride but this stuff provides enough sodium to stop that. Another plus is the customer service from e-caps. They called me when I submitted my first order just to make sure I didn't have any questions and confirm my products were on the way.

Strengths:I really like the consistency of the product both from a taste/liquid perspective and in the manner of the smooth energy release I receive from it. There are a lot of products on the market that claim to be based on the "long-chain complex carbohydrate" tip but this one is the one that works in my opinion.
Weaknesses:Honestly....there aren't any.
It could be a personal preference thing but I doubt it.
Similar Products Used:I have tried them all over the years from Gu, Cliff Shot, Hammer Gel, CarbBoom...you name it.
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Superlight, Fox RLC 100, Shimano XT, Avid Brakes.

Bottom Line:This stuff rocks. I use it dilutes with water--it goes down very easily and washed out of the flask easier. A swig every 20-30 minutes will keep you going for ever. Add either Endurolytes, HEED, or Perpetuem for Hydration and Electrolytes and you're good to go for hours.

Strengths:Tastes good, has a large variety of flavors. Seems to go down smoother than other gels I've used. Doesn't upset my stomach. Able to buy in large containers to put into flasks or in single packets.
Weaknesses:Can't think of any.
Similar Products Used:Carb Boom, Gu
Bottom Line:I like Hammer Gel over the other energy gels mainly because it seems to go down a little easier and it sits well. I've had a lot of stomach problems in the past during races and the Hammer Gel sits the best with me. I also like the flavors. My favorite is the banana and I normally don't like banana flavored things, but it tastes like banana pudding. I also like the fact that it can be bought in large containers as well as the single packets. I'm pretty sure it costs less than a lot of the other energy gels out there too.

Weaknesses:None
Bike Setup:F/S Klien Palamino, Turner Burner and Titus Racer X
Bottom Line:The difference between Hammer Gel and some of the other energy gels I have used in the past(Carb Boom, Clif Shot, Gu and Power Gel) is unbelievable! This is a great product no matter what style of racing/riding you participate in. You can actually can feel the energy seeping back into your body without the unwanted side effects of cramping and gitters. I have tried almost every flavor and have yet to find one that I don't like. Hammer Gel tastes great and is never too sweet, thick or gritty. The greatest thing about Hammer Gel is no matter what type of riding you are doing (cross country or endurace or short track) Hammer Gel works. It is also a great value as you don't have to use much to see results. I don't see myself ever going back to any of the other brands. The Hammer Gel guys get 5 stars on this one!! Strengths:Can NOT be swallowed in the middle of a race without following with water! The first time I ever used a gel was during the run of a sprint distance triathlon. Brought it along just to give it a try. Unfortunately, I was no where near a water station when I squeezed the sticky mess into my mouth. I nearly choked to death b/c I didn't have the saliva needed to swallow the glob. A 1/2 mile later I finally came to an aid station and chugged some water to clear my air canal. From that very experience, I was in search of a gel that could be consumed without needing water to follow it. I discovered Hammer Gel and have used it ever since. It's thin enough to swallow with a dry, parched mouth. Raspberry and Apple Cinnamon are my favorite. Complex carbs are involved. All the other gels are not equipped with complex. Only simple. If you know the difference between the two, you know Hammer Gel is what you want of you want performance. Hammer gel is always with me on the run leg of an Olympic or 1/2 ironman distance triathlon. I can't go without it. It gives me the extra calories I need to finish strong. I swear by it!
Weaknesses:None.
Similar Products Used:Gue, Power Gel, Carboom, Cliff Shot... all too thick.
Bike Setup:Trek 8500 upgraded w/disc brakes and cane creek thud buster
Bottom Line:Thin enough to swallow with a dry race mouth, complex carbs = better for you, can be mixed with water to make an energy drink, excellent for racing and long training workouts.
In my experience with all other gels, Hammer Gel can't be beat. Worth every penny.

Bottom Line:Starting with the Beast of the East 5 day Adventure Race in 2001, I have almost exclusively used Hammer Nutrition and E-Cap products. Prior to 2001, I was having problems with cramping due to insufficient electrolyte intake. I believe that this was due to the bad taste and chemical composition of the other sports drinks and goos I was using, Gatorade, Accelerade, Power Gel, etc. Once I switched to Sustained Energy, Endurolytes, and Hammer Gel the problem immediately went away and I noticed a significant difference in the level of training I was able to sustain. This directly translated to better finishes. I just wish I had learned of Hammer Nutrition earlier in my racing career.

Strengths:After trying numerous gels, Hammer Gel is that one product that comes along and blows away the competition! They use no refined sugar, which means no insulin spiking! Hammer Gel can be used for racing and training up to 2 hours. One of the things I like best is that I can mix two of their 8 assorted flavors like orange and vanilla to make user preferred flavors. These gels can be mixed directly in a water bottle so you do not have to mess with gel packs or sticky fingers and trash. They also have fewer calories per serving than most of their competitors!

Strengths: plenty of great flavors, goes down well in hot and cold weather, easily digests, consistent energy if used properly. Running races of 50-100 miles sometimes causes pretty bad stomach distress and this has not been much of a problem using hammer gel.

Strengths:Taste, effectiveness, combines well with other products from the same company. Amazing results.
Weaknesses:It's not free, it doesn't ooze out of the tree branches like syrup does, the bottle always needs to be refilled because I like it so much. Other than that, . . . none!
Similar Products Used:Cytomax Gulp and Go, GU, etc.
Bike Setup:Giant NRS, Avid Mechanical Discs, Cane Creek AD-10, Marzocchi EXR, Stan's NoTubes, Specialized Ergo Grips . . .
Bottom Line:I usually ride a sixteen mile loop on a weekend and am done. Really done, spent, powdered toast. When I have ridden more (up to twenty five miles or so) in a weekend, I have felt like a soup sandwich at the end of the ride and drained and tired for days afterward.
Using a combination of Hammergel (Banana) with three Endurolyte capsules mixed into the five-serving bottle, and using their H.E.E.D. (gatorade replacement) I rode thirty-eight and a half miles over the weekend. And, I feel great! I could have ridden more if I hadn't gotten something caught in my throat that had me about to cough a lung up. No leg spasms, no muscle soreness, I am very impressed with the effectiveness of this combination from Hammergel. In addition, the cost effectiveness when compared to using Gatorade with Gulp and Go is pretty close to even.
I would whole-heartedlyrecommend these products to endurance racers, series racers, and to any weekend warriors who want to have an edge over their buddies and feel better at the end of a ride, or the day(s) after.

Bottom Line:This stuff really does seem to have a positive impact on performance. I don't see much performance difference between it and the Clif Shot, but the Clif shot was always hard to swallow in one gulp (too freaking thick) and it seemed like I needed a ton of water before my mouth felt right afterward. The Hammer Gel goes down really well, and comes out of the flask nicely, but it has a pretty terrible aftertaste (at least the chocolate, which is the only flavor I've tried). Can't make a comparison with the Carb-Boom yet as I've only used it on one ride.

I'd give it 5 for overall except for that aftertaste. Yech.

Strengths:Bulk container

Decent flavours (well, most are)
Weaknesses:Hard to find until recently
Limited to five servings (flask)

Bottom Line:I never liked those little disposible gel packets - hard to get the gel out, and messy until disposed of. Also, I found the consistency too thick for my liking. It seemed that about 10% of the gel stayed in the packet.

Hammer Gel's flask is a much better solution - I mix four servings of gel with one of water, which is easier to consume (for me). Also, the diluted mixture doesn't leave half a serving behind - it's thin enough that virtuall all of it will flow out the spout.

Avoid the banana flavour - it blows! For those Canucks out there, MEC now carries this stuff for $24 Cdn.

I have a good egg and pancake breakfast 90 minutes before the ride

I do a Hammer Gel at the start and one every 45 minutes thereafter and try to consume around 25 oz of water per hour during the same time period. I'll occassionally use one or two caffeinated Hammer Gels during a long ride depending on how amped up I am already but more often than not I do not use the caffeine.

Every three hours I'll sip through a 20oz water bottle mixed with Hammer's Perpetuem drink. I bring dry mix in ziplocks and reload along the way either at a preplanned spot or sag stop.

At the two hour mark I take two of Hammer's Endurolyte capsules and continue with two an hour through the rest of the ride and two more at the end.

I weigh 170 and am 5'11, 46 years old. This works great for me and I've never had any problems with my stomach with their products.

I call it 'Happy Gel' because it helps put you in your groove and lets you keep a steady pace going, no bonking. I start taking it about 15 minutes before the start of the race and then a small mouthful every 10 - 15 minutes after to maintain my elevated energy level. Last race, a 24 HR, I tried mixing it with my Ultra Fuel (mixes well with drinks)and that worked good the first time, but the next lap I needed a little more so I think I will just keep using it from the flask. I use the Gel, Sustained Energy and Endurolytes. I used to use the various bars which where always hard on the gut, and sport drinks in which you seem to crash and burn after 1.5 hours. Able to cusomize a sports drink with the hammer line. Short rides I use just the Gel, Longer rides I do the gel with Sustained energy before and then just SE during. If its hot( which it usually is in Texas ), I mix in endurolytes.

Strengths:Supplies needed calories during long rides without the sugar spike and crash of other gels.
Weaknesses:Top of the flask is sometimes difficult to close while riding.
Similar Products Used:GU, Clif gels
Bottom Line:Hammer Gel has worked well for me, especially in bonk avoidance and/or recovery. In my first season of racing, I used GU for mid-race intake, but never really felt like it was helping me. Plus, it seemed like my blood sugar was spiking and then crashing.

At one epic race, the organizers were handing out Hammer Gels and since then I've been hooked. The flask eliminates having to open multiple little packets during long rides/races, but more importantly is the stuff inside. The gel seems to give me steadier energy, wards off bonks and has even helped me recover during the last event of one stage race, where I bonked quite hard. Taking in the gel, I was able to recover and finish well.

The big bottles of the stuff do seem expensive, but I think it's probably a better price break than buying individual packets of another gel. Plus, the stuff really works. I've found the raspberry to be a tad tart, but fine. The chocolate is good, as is the orange, but I think my favorite is the Apple Cinnamon, which tastes a lot like apple pie. Consistency is good and easy to ingest. I'll typically grab a mouthful of water and then squirt the gel into that, making everything easier to swallow.

Bottom Line:Of course, since I work for Hammer Nutrition, my opinion may come across as being biased. Therefore, I'll refrain from posting one although I have used the product since its inception in the early to mid 90's, well before I worked for the company. During that time I've completed two more Race Across America bicycle races, two Furnace Creek 508's (winner in '94, runner up in '99), and currently hold two ultra marathon cycling records. I just wanted to comment on an earlier post regarding the glycemic index of complex carbohydrates (maltodextrins) and make a couple comments regarding carbohydrates in general. I hope you'll find this information useful.

Sugar is defined as a monosaccharide or a disaccharide. The shorter the chain length a carbohydrate is, the higher it raises the solution osmolality (the solution concentration of particles carrying an electric charge) in the stomach. Simple sugar must be mixed in weak 6-8% solutions or they will sit
undigested in the stomach and not pass the gastric lining, possibly creating sour stomach, cramps, or flatulence. Maltodextrin is a multiple of sugars hooked together, allowing from 18% to 24% solution immediately in transit to
the liver where it is turned back to the energy cycle as muscle glycogen.

The Amylose-Amylopectin content of maltodextrin or potato starch are very similar in their chemistry to human stored glycogen. Therefore the "Gold-Standard" carbohydrate source for energy drinks, bars, or gels originates from longer-chain carbohydrates (Maltodextrins) because more caloric volume crosses gastric lining with less distress to the competing
athlete. Sports drinks or gels containing simple sugars need to be extremely diluted to match body fluid osmolality. This weak of a concentration will more than likely not allow enough calories (most are up to 100 calories at a 6-8% solution) to be available to working muscles on an hourly basis.

What this means is that complex carbohydrates are superior to simple sugars in that they allow more volume of calories to get into the bloodstream from the GI tract than anything containing simple sugars does. The biggest problem is that once only a minimum (it doesn't take much) of the short chain sugars are present in the blood channels, a "Sugar/Insulin Spike" occurs followed by traumatic blood-sugar below-fasting depression or "Bonk". Because complex carbohydrates may enter at a relatively high 15-20% solution, the typical crashing "Bonk" is not typically as low as the simple sugar "Crash". There are several studies that show that glucose (a simple
sugar) causes a greater drop in blood sugar levels (even BELOW fasting baseline levels!) than complex carbohydrates. Simply put, simple sugars are a very inefficient fuel source. Trying to use simple sugars to fuel your exercise is kind of like trying to heat your home by burning newspapers in the
stove. They're hot but very short-lived. If you want to keep warm you'd have to constantly add more and more newspapers to the fire...highly inefficient!

The other question many people ask is in regards to the glycemic index (GI) of various carbohydrates. Prior to exercise this is critical unless the pre-workout meal is completed three hours prior to exercise, thus allowing insulin levels to return to baseline. After exercise begins
glycemic index impact on insulin release is moderated DURING exercise and is inhibited because sympathetic nervous system hormones are generated in a low depleting blood sugar environment. In other words, the body has a highly
effective way of regulating insulin during exercise. Processed simple sugars are usually in the 95-110 GI range, while processed complex carbohydrates are generally in the 110-130 GI-range. During exercise Glycemic Index is not a factor unless one consumes more than the liver can
return to the energy cycle approximately 280 carbohydrate calories per hour.

I hope this information will be of value to everyone. We invest a lot of money in our equipment and spend a lot of time training and racing. It makes sense to put the best possible fuel in your body so those two things can realize their full potential.

Good riding!

Bottom Line:I've tried and like all of the flavors with vanilla being the most mellow. Mixing different varieties works well also. I can't stomach solid food during a hard training ride or race so the gels are the only answer that I've found. When I stopped using the sugary drinks and started using only Hammergel with plain water my energy levels have remained much more consistent.

Using large multi-serving jugs to refill the flask only makes sense. The small flask fits well into my jersey pocket and I can carry enough for a few hours of hard riding. Ripping open gel packs from Powergel with my teeth has always felt a bit too primal, not to mention the environmental issue of spitting the pouch top into the weeds.

The stuff really works . . .and it does what it says that it does. Without simple sugars I don't get the energy spike and corresponding feeling of being sapped when that "quick high" wears off.

I recommend any of the Hammer Gel flavors to anyone that rides longer than an hour and can't eat until the ride is over.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:This is the best tasting gel I've ever had.
Weaknesses:The package that it comes in is not easy open. I don't like taking it along in races because it's not a one hand, teeth job.
Similar Products Used:Power Gel, Gu
Bottom Line:I love the taste, and it does give a good energy burst. I first recieved these at a local race, and was not sure of the brand since I had never heard of it before. But, as I recieved them at more races, I learned to trust the brand. The only thing I don't like is the packaging. With better packaging, this would be a PERFECT gel.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:hammergel.com
Strengths:Half the cost of GU & others. WORKS FOR 30 to 40 MINUTES!! No simple sugars - no packs to litter around. Comes with free flask that holds 5 servings.
Weaknesses:I didn't find it until now.
Similar Products Used:GU, Powergel, blah blah blah.
Bike Setup:2001 Santa Cruz Superlight with Sid XC & Fox Float R
Bottom Line:I have used many, many products. I do lots of long endurance events including multi-sport. I was so tired of stomach problem, gas, peaks & valleys. I called the 800 # from the web site(800-366-1977) & got to talk with one of the owners. I ended up ordering hammer gel and endurolytes (electrolyte replacements for the heat here in Hawaii). He actually cared about me as a customer!! I have used several of their products now for three weeks. The difference is like night and day. NO STOMACH PROBLEMS. The hammergel is great and thinner consistency than GU. Easy to get down. Good flavors(banana, orange, raspberry). Just ordered another $100 worth....here in three days!!!!!

Strengths:Great marketing idea (see below)
Weaknesses:see below
Similar Products Used:Cliff Bar, Power Bar, Cliff Shot, GU, etc.
Bike Setup:N/A
Bottom Line:The entire selling point of this product is based on the out-dated concept that all complex carbs raise glucose levels in the blood at a slower, steadier (and thus desirable) rate than all simple carbs. It's been known since the early 80's that this is not always the case. There is a rating system called the Glycemic Index which relates how quickly a carb affects glucose levels in the blood after the carb is ingested. Carbs with high GI values create dramatic spikes in blood sugar (undesirable). Carbs with lower values raise glucose levels at a more moderate, sustained pace (desirable). Sucrose (table sugar)has a GI value of 64. Fructose has a value of 22. Maltodextrin (the complex carb and main ingredient in Hammer Gel) has a value of 105 (the absolute highest of any carbohydrate). There's plenty of info on the internet reguarding this so do some research before buying. I'm giving this product a 5 for clever marketing (and also because my intent is to inform - not to alter the rating of this product which I haven't nor will ever use).

Strengths:
no messy wrappers
good ingredients
no caffeine
Weaknesses:
difficult to get all of gel out of flask
flask can get messy
Similar Products Used:
Gu
Bottom Line:Hammer Gel is simple and does the job. It's basically maltodextrin, fruit juice extract, and some amino acids. I have also made my own gel by melting maltodextrin (from brewing supply stores) into rice syrip (which is what Gu uses) and placed it in the flasks.... this also works, and is cheaper. Hammer Gel flavors all taste good to me, but I perhaps prefer the plain.

Trek 8000 Full XTR w/Sid shock
Bottom Line:Just started using Hammer Gel and I find it very convienient to use. No messy wrappers to have to hold on to, just put it in your flask and your ready to go. Prolithic Sports has a gel flask holder that velcros to the bike or snaps to your strap on your camelbak for easy access. As for as performance wise it seems to work pretty good , it gives me energy when I need it. It has alot of info on their website about the cons of sugars and such. Dunno much about that though.
