$50.00 | | Purchased At: | Bens Bikes (ebay) | | Strengths: | VERy light for the price. With regular maintenance, these will go for a while. Common bearing size. Nice LOUD ratcheting. "Boutique", CNC'd shells. | | Weaknesses: | None yet. | | Similar Products Used: | Deore, XT, a bunch of others | | Bike Setup: | '01 iDrive, custom wheels, MX-6 bars, mix of Deore LX/XT, Six Deluxe, egg C's, '04 firex SL, UN72, etc. etc. etc. | | Bottom Line: | Bottom line is this, the hubs with the 4-pawl mechanism were crap. Hadley still offers the 3-pawl upgrade for 42 bux or so.
I have these laced to Syncros l'il Snappers with DT comps 14/15 and DT alloy nipples. I'm 6'1" and about 190 with a spinning cadence mostly. I ride in Ct's rough, rooty technical terrian with short, steep, bursty climbs that require a lot of granny-gear and effort to climb while picking lines through various large-sized rocks. I usually don't shy away from drops less than 3 feet.
The engagement is quick and I've never had a problem with the freehub. After reviewing these hubs here, I called Hadley and they were very open about the issues that they had with the 4-pawl freehub. She said that I could get the 3-pawl upgrade if my hubs didn't already have it. It did out of the box, so I'm happy after about 1000 miles or so.
You can use regular bike tools (spanner wrenches, not your dad's craftsmans) and they are easy to service.
If only I could find a set of these in ISO disk, I'd be the happiest GT owner ever.
I'ma gonna give 5/5 because I think the older 4-pawl ones are giving these a bad name. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

One year of not lots of riding later it still works, but it also still clunks sometimes when I first step on the pedals and I am never quite sure if it will keep working. Took apart and there was a fair bit of gunk in the ratchet mechanism. Seen worse, but not as well sealed as I had hoped. I had an old XT setup that weighed about the same as the ``fixed' GT/Hadley, took five years of regular use and almost no service, was quiet, gave zero problems and outlasted some of the rest of the bike.
See also 7/21/2003 review for other problems with the GT/Hadley.
I think the only freehub that has given me more trouble was an old-style Hugi and it never failed in the field it just ate bearings fast.
New Hadley hubs may be better but the GT/Hadley probably is not worth it for most riders even if you get it cheap.
Phone number I have for Hadley is 909-946-6780. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Called and talked to Mr. Hadley and he said if I bought the hubs they would send me -- free -- new axle kits that would take care of the problem. They did send them, but it took THREE YEARS and when the new axle kits arrived I found out they require special tools (thin 18mm wrench) and take the hub from well under 280g to around 350g. Finally, I think there was a design defect in the original they did not fix in the new one. For the money and the weight I could have gotten something more mainstream with proven durability. Well, sometimes life gives you lemons, so make lemonade ... I built up a wheel and it occasionally clunks when you first step on the pedals after coasting; and after a year of not very serious use it is starting to creak under load. I know building good hubs is difficult, and I have had problems with other hubs I have used, but I would stay away from Hadley hubs unless there was a lot of positive feedback (there isn't as of this review) or some really compelling reason to use them (killer deal). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Handlaced by Princi at PRINCYCLES (you know, the ones who wrenched for Giò Bonazzi during her DH world championship winning years). | | Bottom Line: | I got these hubs because they were cheap and I liked the idea of having a spare set of wheels. Ever since they were laced mid-June '00 I've been using them and after about 1500 km. all offroad, I haven't had any problems at all. After reading the reports here I was a bit worried, but then I took the rear hub apart, noticed it was the 3-pawl type, lubed it with a silicone based very light grease and have kept riding without any inconvenience. I'd like to receive Hadley Racing's e-mail address if anyone knows it, or their website URL, just in case I do need to get help from them. Considering how much I paid them, I have no reason for not giving 5+5 flaming chilis to these hubs, and recommend them to anyone who can still get hold of a pair. Just make sure you take apart the rear one and clean and re-lube it before using it. In this way you get to understand how it works and eventually see if there's anything wrong before you start using it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$225.00 | | Strengths: | Lightweight; Good performance for the price | | Weaknesses: | Freehub assembly starts slipping after a couple of years of use. | | Bike Setup: | Ti FAT - too bad you can't buy this great bike anymore but that's another story. | | Bottom Line: | These hubs work just fine; especially when considering the price. The problem is that after using it for 1-2 years the freehub assembly started slipping. When I called GT trying to get replacement parts, they weren't particularly helpful. However, I did find found out from them that Hadley Racing Components made their hubs for them that year. That was a fortunate turn of luck because it turns out that Hadley Racing is one of the best customer service oriented companies I have run into in the mountain bike industry. When I called them they told me that they had redesigned the freehub assembly from a 4 pawl design to a 3 pawl design to eliminate the failures that some people were having. They sent me a new updated assembly which I've been using for a year now without any sign of failure. I think that their standard hub designs that they sell under their name are probably fairly heavy duty since you see them mostly on custom tandum bikes. At any rate if you get a chance to do business with Hadley Racing you will probably come away very satisfied. They could have just said "sorry it's out of warranty" like 95% the larger manufacturers would have done but they didn't. I give 3 stars to GT for low cost hubs and 5+++++ stars to Hadley Racing for their good service and for their high quality updated design. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

A bunch of folks mentioned problems with these hubs. A few people mentioned trying to get service -- GT was not much help, but Hadley Racing, who made the hubs, sent them new guts. Those with new guts reported no further problems. I called Hadley Racing, Upland CA, 909-946-6780 and Mr. Hadley himself answered the telephone. He said they had problems with an older design that provided finer ratcheting and he would send a free upgrade that was coarser steps but more durable. There are a lot of the old hubs floating around, both models can be upgraded. You will need the model number or the wheel in front of you with the cassette removed so you can measure the drive side flange diameter. I have not yet ridden the product, but five for customer service, overall minus one for shipping a product that needed more testing (but then: the early Chris King, Hope, Hugi, etc. all had problems, too). | | Weaknesses: | You have to get and install the upgrade to get a reliable hub. I ride a lot of short steep hills and am attributing this to the pal failure. Also, the bearings/axle have had tons of resistance from day one (no adjustment for this). I've been using theese hubs for about a year now in varied conditions and have only experienced one easily rectifiable problem with the rear hub. After being completely sumerged in water during a race one of the rear pawls was sticking. After disassembly(easier than other hubs I've owned)and inspection the problem was the result of sand and debris being carried in by the water. After cleaning and adding a thin coating of waterproof greese the problem has not returned even after subsequent submersions. Rear seals could be better. Have had no problems with the front hub. | Overall Rating: |

If you have these hubs, and are forced to live with them like me, they key is to keep the back hub clean and well lubed. I maintain mine about once month using a light teflon lube. | Overall Rating: |

I bought a GT ZASKAR 1997 with GT`s CNC hubs and after the first month of use the freewheel started to make strange noises. My bike shop looked at it and told me they could send them back to GT but I will not have my wheel for some time. I decided to wait and I blew the free wheel after 10 other rides. The bike shop send the wheel to GT and they change the freewheel. I rode the bike 2-3 times before the end of the season without problem. The next spring I rode 10 times before it blew again (far away from home in Moab UT). Back home my bike shop exchange my rear hub with a XTR at no charge except for the new spokes and nipples and I did not had any problem with this set up since. I weight 190pds and love to climb. The GT hubs are sexy but do not belongs on a ZASKAR. GT Canada was very helpfull with me (they pay for the new XTR hubs). Thank you to Cycle ABC of Montreal. | Overall Rating: |

This guy designed them. On speaking with him he imformed me that the ones I got were97' models. And They had some design flaws that chould be easliy be taken care of with upgraded 98' parts . New beefer end caps with new water tite seals . And a new seal for the hub, and new pick and paw. I have been riding long and hard for quite some time now .And have put well over 1000mi. on these things since May . I weigh 180lbs . and they seem to work flawlessly. And I have had no problems at all. I would like to thank Mike and Jay at Hadly racing for taking care of the parts and the great service. My 97 GT LTS came with these hubs, and while there's not much that can go wrong with the front hub, the freewheel mechanism in the rear hub gave me problems from the very first ride I went on. My problem started out as the freewheel slipping while under power. My previous bike was a Zaskar with XT hubs, and I've never had problems with them at all. This GT freehub seems to be a poor design. I think the problem is, among other things, that the screw-on caps at the end are not strong enough to withstand the shock loads encountered during normal mountain biking activities. I've tried tightening them as hard as I could, but they usually loosen up in about a couple of weeks. Then they allow the free hub rotor to become mis-aligned with the splines in the hub. When this happens, the pawls do not always engage the splines, causing the slippage. In severe cases, the pawls can jam up. In any event, once this happnes, both the pawls and the splines can get a little chewed up, and should be replaced. In my case, my LBS replaced the rotor with the pawls and a new spring, but the inner splines on the hub were apparrently worn as well. Again, on my first ride with the new rotor, I experienced slippage again. I wish GT could have simply replaced the hub with a Shimano XT or something like it. I ended up getting a new wheels set with HUGI sport hubs, which worked a lot better, due to what I believe to be a much better design. Eventually, GT took my rear wheel back, and replaced it with a jersey and a pair of shorts. | Overall Rating: |

I bought these hubs/Mavic 217's from a friend that had them as the OE wheelset on a 96' LTS-1. He said that the freewheel locked up on him once, and he called the manufacturer (not GT but Hadley Racing) to complain. They sent him a new freewheel, but in the meantime he fixed the hub himself (hes the head mech for a Pro team). He gave me the new freehub as a spare when I purchased the wheelset. I now have one full season on them, and they have held up well. The rear hub was loose for a while, rocking lateraly from side to side with no way to fix it (cartridge bearings..ugg). Hadley stepped up to the plate and send my LBS not only new bearings, but a new freehub AND the $25 tool to install the bearings. Since the replacement, NO problems whatsoever, although I do check them all the time, having had my confidence shaken. They are light, fairly sexy, and the clacking noise is not really annoying, but it is attention getting. Overall, it seems like they may have had some flaws at first, but now they seem to be a pretty good set of hubs. | Overall Rating: |

The GT hub is made by Mike Hadley Racing, the GT 1000 is equal to an XT and the 2000 is equal to an XTR. I spoke to Hadley Racing and they indicated that this hub does not need grease. (But, because it is CNC aluminum, it needs a very small amount of light oil per my LBS.) According to the different LBSs who handle GTs their was a problem with the earliest hubs but that has been corrected now. I agree with some others who feel that this hub is getting a bad rap and greasing these hubs will cause you problems, not alleviate them. I'll post only a 3 for now, but, if it works as well as the XTR front hub later I will post a higher score for the GT hub. | Overall Rating: |

I own a '97 GT LTS-1 and had gotten about 4 - 5 months of ride out of the hub before it started it 'catching' on me. At first I thought the loud 'clacking' noise was cool (it kept the bears and mountain lions away on rides). My LBS serviced the hub, but before even getting my next ride in, the hub had problems again. Fortunately my LBS replaced the hub with an XT under warranty as they admitted that a lot of GT riders suffered the same problem I have. The XT hub thus far has proven flawless! In comparison to the GT rear hub, it is a stealth fighter as it is silent and now the wild animals feel no fear in stalking me.If you have these hubs (the front one so far has been okay), talk to your LBS about replacing them before you too suffer problems. | Overall Rating: |

For the price of an LTS-1, I expect much better. The load clicking is easy to fix. Simply add grease. Of course, you would think a new bike would come with greased bearings!!! I advise a high viscosity waterproof one, since the cams in the freewheel RUST and clog very easily. Also, the seals don't seal well. Very high maintenece hubs. Now with this latest nasty grinding noise (bearings) it is time to switch. | Overall Rating: |

After spending BANK on a bike this should not be happening. I dont know why GT would use a low quality hub on an exspensive bike. And judging by all the bad pub on their rear hub they should demand a full recall, and to replace them all with XTR!! They told me the sound is OK and didn't disaseble. Then (sh)it happens : Riding down the hill (30-45 km/h) in a slow style, rear chain rings stopped to freewheel. Guess where chain ended... So even my bike is under warranty, and they can get me (and will) ,everything damaged, a new one , I just don't trust these hubs any more... and I still cannot convince dealer to get me an XTR hub instead. | Overall Rating: |

I retired the rear wheel to a spare after 3 or 4 months and as many services (disassamble, clean, lube, hope), I still use the front hub although it eats bearings very quickly. At $16.00 each it gets expensive. These hubs are low quality period. I've used an XTR rear hub for the past 7 months with 200+ miles per week 50% trail use. no problems, no service.

Initially I found the loud clicking sound of the cassette body quite cool. This was until it would seize and quit freewheeling, particularly during a race!I found that monthly removal of the cassette body, which is quite easy, and packing the pawl area with Phil Wood grease would alleviate the seizing. Unfortunaly I had to use so much grease in the pawl chamber the hub would have severe drag, the other alternative is to grease the hub daily or weekly! | Overall Rating: |

After 7 hours of riding !!! I cleaned the cassette unit (w/ pawls attached) and the receiver with W-D 40 to loosen everything up. I completely dried the entire assembly, applied a thin film of Phil's waterproof grease and re-assembled. I have 2 hours in some fairly nasty conditions on the hub since the rebuild. I hope it will continue to work. I will have to give the hubs credit for ease of disassembly. It looks as if these will require more than what I feel to be routine maintenance. It wouldn't free-wheel again and was making some god-awful noises. (Beats walking I guess). Anyway.... I will take it apart and try to repair it. I do have another set of wheels w/ Nukes on them. It looks like this hub will be replaced w/ a Nuke. These hubs are definitely not GT quality. I am hesitant to use them for training wheels, much less depend on them to last a race !!!! This hubs really are a piece of junk. Some of them are not assembled properly. If you hit any other GT riders on the tracks, about 80% of them had problems with those hubs. In my particular case the rear hub had play. When I noticed this it was already to late. The freewheel got damaged that I had to replace this hub. On my colleagues bike the front hub makes scratchy noises and doesn't turn smoothly. Anyway the Shimano XT rear hub I put on now works very nice and doesn't make this loud noise caused by the freewheel. Is freewheel the correct word?
My GT rear hub serves now as pen holder on my desk. This product is very well designed for this purpose.
The thoughtful thing about it is that GT puts those hubs on their top of the line bikes (e.g. GT LTS-1). They would be better of by putting on XT hubs.
