$150.00 | | Strengths: | Quiet bearings Smooths out suspension | | Weaknesses: | Expensive.......why not come stock? Not very durable | | Similar Products Used: | none | | Bike Setup: | '98.5 GT STS 1000DS Needle bearing kit w/ new link arm | | Bottom Line: | NOTE: THis is a review of the needle bearing kit that comes with a new link arm.
The needle bearings work great. Kept suspension quiet and smooth.
The link arm on the other hand, was a total bust. To begin with you have to use the lightweight link arm with this kit. The link arm has larger holes at seatpost connection. The link arm has also been machined out on the underside of the the crossmember. I broke 2 of these link arms in 4 months. The second one broke after only 10 miles on the trail. Full cracks just under each travel chip, plus 2 stess cracks next to the crossmember.
Upon talking with GT directly after second arm broke, I was told that the machined link arm was for light XC use. HMMM.....I don't seem to remember any reviews or warnings about this. GT rep told me that they could either send out another link arm identical to the one I keep breaking....or they would send out the original heavyduty link arm that came with the bike. Only down fall with the stock link arm, not able to use the needle bearings.
GT knew these link arms were weak when they tested them. GT's customer service basically said I was screwed.
I sold the bike and will never buy a GT again.
Too bad I have to give a rating. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Thousand Oaks, CA Date Reviewed: April 23, 1998 | | Bottom Line: | The LTS 4 bar linkage design is great. If you want to make it AWESOME change out the bushings at the pivot points with the new GT bearing kit. Your ride will become an incredibly PLUSH experience through even the worste washboarded fireroad. The kit is ~$90-$100, installation shouldn't be more than $75. Don't try it on your own - it takes specialty tools and if the shop screws up they're responsible! Read my indepth review in the GT STS1000 section of this webpage for more details. YOU WON'T REGRET THE INVESTMENT!! | Overall Rating: |
