Great frame/bike for any level of rider as it will deliver at any level of rider capability. As you start, advance and collect skills the bike itself will just become an extension of yourself. Every time get back on the bike after being off for a while, it's still the same bike - a great bike! | | Weaknesses: | ME! I can not pass any judgment of weakness about this bike as it has been great! I have 1.40 Michelin slicks for commuting.
knobbies for dirt. | | Bottom Line: | SOLID BIKE! I grew up in the BMX scene and when I started MTB'in around 1986, Redline did not have a great MTB and GT did. I wanted something that I could relate to as I knew the strength of these companies and had no idea of what was going on in the behind the scenes of what was being developed in the MTB-NorCal founding roots. I knew the GT name and that is what I went with PLUS GT [Gary Tuner] lived in Alabama, I am from Alabama... It's all about having some type of association with your bike...
My GT Zaskar is now a classic as GT has re-issued a limited edition Zaskar again! [2008] I guess I should put all the XTR components that I still have brand new in the pack - never used!

$1000.00 | | Purchased At: | ebay.uk | | Strengths: | I bought my 1993 (that's right! USA built) Zaskar LE second hand only a few months ago and I am blown away by how well it climbs. It is so agile and my riding has definitely improved as a result of having this bike. It descends beautifully too, with razor sharp handling as long as you don't mind the kick in the pants the really super stiff ally frame can give you on really rocky stuff. Looks cool too in the original anodized purple (which sounds odd, until you see it). | | Weaknesses: | Haven't found one yet. For a second hand 14 year old frame it is immaculate. No creaks or cracks or bends anywhere. Bomb proof! | | Similar Products Used: | My original 1997 GT Timberline. Triple triangles rule! Also my wife's Marin Bear Valley SE (has to be said another US classic) | | Bike Setup: | Race Face Evolve XC cranks, XT groupset with Sram chain, Mavic XM117 rims with disc hubs, Shimano XT discs front and back (needs an adaptor on the rear but works just fine), Rock Shox SID Race fork, carbon fibre riser bar, Easton EA50 stem, Cane Creek headset, Shimano DX636 clipless pedals, Panaracer Fire XC Pro tyres. | | Bottom Line: | I've wanted a Zaskar ever since I got my first GT 10 years ago and boy it was worth the wait. Contemplated a full susser but absolutely no need now, the Zaskar LE can do it all, and in most cases better! The best £500GBP I ever spent. If you want a strong but lightweight XC bike that'll outclimb anything and still stay in front going downhill too you must consider a Zaskar, (especially when the new US built ones arrive.) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$700.00 | | Purchased At: | craigslist(frame) ebay(comps) | | Strengths: | STIFF! weighs in under 24 lbs, climbs like a beast, and descends right where you tell it to, thanks to the mellower steerer tube. Triple triangle really does held keep the back tire glued in the sketchy climbs. | | Weaknesses: | goofy design with the rear brake bosses...and no disc mounts. In a later life I would run it with a 100/120....the skareb 80 is realllll fast, but doesn't quite eat the big stuff w/ such a stiff frame. | | Similar Products Used: | OLLLD GT timberline CroMo, Spec. XT crankset w/20ttgranny....not like you need it, the bike is quite the featherweight. | | Bottom Line: | Beats every other bike i've raced. holds pace with the duallys on the sketchy descents, and will climb forever. Snappy in the turns...but stay away from the Hot S's....they suck major. Anyone who dreams of the feel of a CroMo, but the climbability of a Ti r Carbon....here is the (somewhat aged) best of both worlds. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | eBay | | Strengths: | I bought this off of eBay--the bike was virtually unridden even though it's a 19" 1997 model. So, it's like riding it new. It's superlight--well under 25 pounds, and has great geometry. The geometry makes it really stiff and responsive, and the lightness gets it over all sorts of logs and obstacles no problem. The paint job (frost red) looks great, and the welds are thick on oversized tubing--it feels very strong. I'm on a budget, and want top-of-the-line without having to pay for it. I'll ride this hardtail forever! For what I paid, its components are unbeatable. Triple Triangle frame design is very good--I like it more than I thought I would. | | Weaknesses: | Original Judy XC Fork is now outdated--but it's strong and that's what matters most to me. I get chain suck once in a while. | | Similar Products Used: | 1992 Diamondback Ascent (now vintage) | | Bike Setup: | XT levers, brakes, and shifters, XT crank, chain, deraillers, 8-gear cassette. Kore Stem on Ahead headset, Azonic bar. Actually has nice visual appeal. I added barends, which seems right for the bike. Also, an Odyssey brake booster on the rear. Clipless pedals. Mavic 217 SUP rims on GT original hubs. I like the look of the hubs. I cut and wrapped an innertube around the right chainstay before I ever even rode it, but I imagine I get chain slap. Maxxis Hard Drive Tires off Ebay--work great, keep me right on track. | | Bottom Line: | If you want an AWESOME hardtail and don't want to shell out too much, look for one of these. You can buy it for cheap and it's a great ride! My wife says it looks great, and I agree. I will upgrade the fork someday, but not until it breaks, which doesn't feel like it's gonna be anytime soon. With a bike this old, you probably won't find one in such pristine shape, so pay attention to the components and how old they are--as long as your frame's welds hold, the components are gonna matter a whole lot more to you than the frame. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I had a head-on collision with my friend - each diving into a ravine from opposite ends at full speed - his whole head-tube was ripped off (Stumpjumper M2 frame), broke his jaw, tore open my cheek and cracked my nose, bent my fork - but the Zaskar otherwise was unscathed!! S tires, Mavic 517 Rims, Judy SL being upgraded to a SID SL (2000). | | Bottom Line: | Price was not an object when I purchased this bike in '98. With everything there was to choose, the Zaskar stood out as the best priced package. It goes where I point it and has allowed me to upgrade to some lighter components (i.e. Easton Monkey bar and carbon seatpost, 2000 SID, etc.) Total bike weight for my 16" '98 Zaskar is around 22.5 lbs. This is great considering that I can ride as hard as I want, race occassionally, do some downhill, etc. on a strong, light hardtail. Almost no maintenance problems other then a worn out XT front del. and a bent rim on a downhill crash. I weight over 200 lbs and ride a couple times a week on fairly technical trails. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I got my '98 Zaskar LE frame at Christmas '97. It has been a great bike for a year and a half. Until recently. I started hearing a creaking sound anytime I was on the bike. After checking out all the components on the bike, I found the sound to be coming from the connection of the TOP tube and the SEAT tube. There was no visable cracks in the weld, but you could see the flex in the material. Took it back to a GT dealer, he found it to be the same problem location. He called GT the same day and they said they had one in stock and would send it out to the shop. GT service was real quick. I was only out of a bike for a week. However I decided to upgrade the frame while I had the chance. SO I upgraded to a '99 Xizang(Ti). We will see how it holds up.I still feel that the Zaskar LE is still one of the best bikes out there. However if you are a heavier rider 180 lbs. + this may not be the best choice.I still give the bike 5 stars. I took it back to the shop and they guys told me it was normal. Well, I raised hell because the rear elastomer was the loudest creak I had ever heard in 10 years of riding. So guess what. The shop called GT and explained the problem. No soution. By now I just want a simple hard tail and heard about Zaskar. I ask the shop to swap out the LTS frame for a Zaskar and lo and behold! they did it! I gotta say GT got me for life right then and there. The shop only charged me $100 to swap the cheesy LTS-3 components over to my NEW red Zaskar LE frame. Not too crazy about the color at first. I would have preferred BB finish but I grew to love the anodized red. The bike rips! A year later I am going with all XTR etc... I give ***** to GT and ***** to their Z-LE!!

The massive ovalized down tube and the various CNCed parts look cool and add to the bikes solid feel and quality look. Before I bought the bike, I was concerned that the frame would ride too harsh. I may not race as much as some, due to 2 part-time jobs, a full-time job, and college, but I do know a good bike when I ride one- and the Zaskar is it! I bought my Zaskar 3 years ago. Full XT components. I found it a little harsh, but attrubuted that to the aluminum frame and the way GT builds these bad boys. Since then I upgraded with a Thudbuster Quadrapivot, the Shimano 636 downhill pedals, a WTB SST saddle, and the Marzocchi Bomber Z2 fork. I am completely satisfied with this setup and would totally recommend it to anyone. I have ridden it extensively through some of the worst crap around - it hauls ass and never misses a beat. Hills are a cakewalk. The cornering is really aggressive - I'm still caught offguard sometimes (especially if my tires are overinflated). The weight might be an issue for some - usually these weight weenies are just roadies in disguise. I figure that my bike is covered in 5 pounds of mud by the end of the ride anyway, and the extra weight makes me a stronger rider (besides, the light stuff breaks more easily). ride a ZASKAR | Overall Rating: |

I've ridden may high end mountain bikes and heard may good things about GT, So it was time to do some research and build the killer cross-country racer so I started off with a 98 Zaskar Le frame and added these components. A Marzocchi Z2 Atom Bomb, King headset, Azonic shorty stem, Azonic 1.5 riser DW bars, Precision Billet (Proshift) V brakes, XTR rapid rear/ XTR front derailleurs (8 speed), Raceface B'bracket, Raceface cranks, Raceface post, WTB SST saddle and a wheelset of King hubs, Mavic 517s and Michelin wild gripper (kevlar) tires. Talking about a racing machine this bike kicks ass and I could'nt have done it without a rigid frame. Yes the components are top notch sh*t but you got to start from ground up (GT Zaskar Le frame) I dont like some of the components GT selects for thier production models but the frame kicks ass. hugh , chisllxtr Kingatombam | Overall Rating: |

I just recently got this bike and it kicks tail!!! I weigh 235 and the frame nary even flexes. The bike tracks straight and goes uphill like a feather, much better than my Cannandale f600. The best part is that I got it for $1000, the owner took it on a trip and scratched the frame a little. Buy it, you won't be sorry. | Overall Rating: |

My review of the bike, led me to the conclusion that this bike is not for sissy's. This Bike has every design of a cross-country race, like it's older brother GT Zaskar LE. I would recomend this bike to anyone who likes a comfortable ride, but still yearns for the performance that the top level racers have. | Overall Rating: |

I bought a GT Zaskar LE frame in 1993, I was poor and had it built up with LX equip. and a MAG21. I'm 235 pounds and generally hard on equipment. This bike is still going strong. I've had to replace 3 handlebars, rebuild the fork 4 times, and I'm on my 3rd set of pedals, but my frame is still in great shape (minus a few decals). When I replace this, I'll be buying another GT. | Overall Rating: |

Hello everyone. I've owned the Zaskar GT bike for three years. It's a 95 model and I love it. Its fully loaded with XTR groupy. I have a Answer Manitou Fs/TI fork on it and it handles very well. I ride it very hard and had no frame troubles. I love the way it reacts when I take it down a very tough section or downhill hill sitatutions. The bike rocks. I would only own GT. They give you a great bike for your money. Also a great company that cares about the family of riders who ride GT bikes. If you have one, pat yourself on the back. Nice choose and have fun riding the hell out of it. GT ROCKS. ASK JULIE FURTADO!!! She was a champion for years with GT. Have fun. C ya. | Overall Rating: |

Really this bike has a better feel than any other hard tail I have ever ridden. I have the '97 ZASKAR LE which has full XTR. I love this bike. When I went to pick it up I saw the GT hubset and was NOT impressed. NOTE to GT your HUBS SUCK!!! Spend your time on what you do best. Comtinue to make Great bikes. I swaped out the original rims/hubs for some CaneCreek Crono's w/ Ti spokes. Only $200 bucks for the upgrade...money WELL spent. The color, Ride FEEL and handleing are all top notch. makes me glad my last bike was snagged so I could move on up like George Jefferson! Now I am At the TOP and like the way it feels.

I felt that I had to write in to comment on GT's incredible service and bikes. I owned a '96 GT LTS-2 which unfortunately broke, and within four weeks GT had sent me a new replacement Zaskar. Warranty incredible. As far as the bike is concerend the Zaskar has to be one of the greatest frames around (I've ridden alot of different ones) and I would not trade it for anything. As long as GT continues to produce such phenomenal bikes, and offers such great service (certainly wouldn't have that response time with Crappendale) I will always ride them, and will recommend them to anyone interested in purchasing any level of bike. I've got to agree with Top Dog, SHAME ON ANYONE WHO DIDN'T GIVE THIS BIKE 5 CHILIS!!!!!!!!!!! This bike rules | Overall Rating: |

This is a great bike with the accompanying tri-spoke carbon fiber wheels that I have, and I love the bike for dirt and downhills. But, I live in Florida and suspension bikes SUCK in the sand. I always come home with a mouthful of it. Changinging to standard forks sure helped the ride, but they always bend. I guess there's no winning with this bike in Florida. On the downhill it corners like its on rails and it climbs the roughest hill with ease. The geometry on this bike is incredible it almost feels like GT built this bike just for me. This is a bike that I primarly commute on. It does a great job on the roads(Mi roads suck with regards to conditions). Last weekend I took the bike out to Sand Lakes Quiet Area. The '96 Zaskar is a killer dirt machine. Climbed until the cheesy performance tires could not bite anymore. I was able to make all the corners and track where I wanted to go. Fast down hills were confidence builders. The XT components worked perfectly. This bike rocks.

I have had my Zaskar since 94 and I treat it like shit. I've tried to kill it but it will not die. I cannot justify purchasing a new bike until this one is not rideable. I have bombed Killington numerous times, ride in mud that never gets completely washed off, throw the bike around real hard when I ride, and do my own maintenace (lube chain). The breakaway rear d. hanger is a must have on any bike. It is the only thing that has kept this bike going. Anything that Hans Rey helps design is great by default. | Overall Rating: |

I bought the Zaskar LE frame in 95 and loaded it up with xt goodies. It weighs just over 22 lbs. and climbs like hell. The fork is a Manitou 3 with speed springs for guts and has never caused problems besides being loud on the rebound. The bike has tossed me a few times but it still works like new. With v brakes these things can launch you over the bars anytime. The only downside of this bike is that it's so damn stiff, after a day on washboards you cn feel it in the lower back. You get used to it because it kicks so much ass. | Overall Rating: |

Great light bike and fast on the climb. I've given it hell too. Still no probs except that mavic conformed the spokes all wacky and I couldn't keep those things trued for the whole day. (yes I respoked them) It's a typical aluminum frame so it will beat you up on those rocky and hard packed dirt trails. However you will have an edge over the other riders on the uphill.

I have put about 5000 miles on my 93 Zaskar. Other than chain marks on the chainstay, the bike is still in excellent shape. I built the frame up myself using mostly XT components (Except for the expensive XT cranks....used LX instad). Since that time, I have worn out everything (and replaced) except for the frame and the Mag-21 shock (which will be rebuilt soon). While not a abusive rider, the Zaskar has held up well to my 200 lbs well. While not the lightest frame (measured at ~4.5lbs for 19 frame), it is light enough to make a 25 lb bike without using stupid-light components. I have been searching for a new bike and have narrowed my choices to either Cannondale (CAAD3) with Headshock or the Zaskar (same basic choices I had 4 years ago). After seeing many controversial posts about the CAAD3 (no such posts on the Zaskar), I will stick with the Zaskar as my hardtail of choice.I would only replace it to buy a SC heckler (2 lbs heavier frame & twice the price) or another Zaskar (to allow longer travel fork without affecting handling). Basic Scores:Handling: 7 Ball Burnished Finish: 5 Stiffness: 5 Plushness: 3 (rigidity can have its downfalls) Warranty: 0Overall: 4The only thing keeping this bike from a perfect score is the warranty. While it is a lifetime warranty this is ONLY IF assembled by a authorized dealer. What a lot of SH$T. Why sell a frame-only option with a stupid warranty condition like that. BTW, my LBS quoted $100 to swap parts from my old Zaskar to a newer one, so add $100 to the price of the frame if you want that lifetime warranty. Luckily my frame hasnt required replacement yet!!! | Overall Rating: |
