It is great on or off road. I take this bike on the Rubicon Run trail. It is a level 10 class 5 boulder crawl. The bike and I do fine. In my opinion, that says it all!

Weaknesses:If you like a lighter frame then you might have a problem with the weight but it works great for me.

Bottom Line:I bought this bike in 1997 stock with a rigid fork which I replaced the next year with the Indy XC. It was the first year with the threadless headset and V-brakes, which were the best parts of the bike. The seating position is very comfortable, but not really aggressive. It has been a good bike and in some ways still better than the Stumpjumper I replaced it with.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Ripleys
Strengths:Strong frame, comfortable seat, good geometrty (even 5 years ago)
Weaknesses:A bit heavy (no over the top though), although the components are not to notch, I had very few problems.
Similar Products Used:Treks and other GTs
Bike Setup:Never touched it in 5 years. continental tires.
Bottom Line:Having never updated my bike for 5 years seems rather lame, however for a weekend warrior the GT gave faithful service. Never broke it, only ever adjusted the cable tension several times over the years. Ocasionaly oiled the chain. Finally wore out the Velociraptors and put a set of Continentals on it. Remember this is a bike with no suspension, but very forgiving on the tracks. Why are there so many product reviews on this machine ? Because it was (and is) a good and popular bike. Have recently traded it in on a Kona (hard tail) - but god bless my Timberline.

Date Reviewed: January 12, 2002
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Frame is absolutely bomproof...mine is 9 years old now ('93 model) and no problems as yet...green metalflake paint looks superb
Weaknesses:Original components (esp. rims, headset and plasticky BB) are crap, frame heavy, cable routing works OK but is badly thought out (esp. rear brake) and some flex in chainstays
Similar Products Used:Marin Eldridge Grade and a random aluminium framed thing
Bike Setup:New XT everything. Tioga DH tyres, FIR rims, DT D/B spokes. Seatpost, stem and cranks original, XT chainrings. Original rigid forks!!
Bottom Line:Great steel frame which is bombproof and lasts forever; this justifies upgrades, but it is heavy - not that good for XC but great for freeriding and general abuse. If you need something reliable and bombproof go for this.

The driveline gets stronger and the suspension cant be beat!! Now the bike rocks... the frame is a GEM!! Its as strong as an OX (and weights almost as much)The ride is super smooth and inspires confiedence.. Purchased At:Charnock Richard's Cycles
Strengths:Good sturdy frame, ideal starter front suspension bike
Weaknesses:Paint easily chipped
Similar Products Used:Univega Alpina
Bike Setup:Mine had a Manitou Mach 5 fork as opposed to the Rock Shox fork that came on the '94 model, I've also added Club Roost bar and some LX groupset parts.
Bottom Line:Great first purchase, I'm considering buying another more modern one as mine is a the 1994 model in evergreen colour. The finish is brilliant, a tidy bike and surprisingly quick too. The frame is as strong as an ox and can take a whack or two, also the triple triangle looks unique! One thing I have to say is that after about 2 months the paint had started to chip in parts which was a little annoying.

Its weighs quite a bit, especially with the fork on top, but it nevers feels too heavy to ride.

I'd recommend the bike for beginners who don't want to pay a fortune.

Favorite Trail:Anything local
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $389.00
Purchased At:International Bicycle
Strengths:Upgradeable, tough frame, you definitely grow to love it; steel has personality to some people
Weaknesses:Mine in particular is probably a little too large for me, but I've grown to get used to it and I'm not unhappy with it - basically, there are no big weaknesses other than some of the components
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper FS, Huffy Ironman (eww), Scott Boulder
Bike Setup:Race Face Turbine LP cranks, Avid Ultimate L levers, Marzocchi Z-2 Atom Bomb, Bontrager Mustang rear wheel, XT rear d. + shifters, 646 pedals, Profile Maniac riser bar
Bottom Line:I've basically upgraded everything on this bike, however the new parts on it have been purchased gradually. Every once in awhile something will wear out or stop performing very well and I'll decide to replace it. As of right now I'm incredibly satisfied with the bike, everything seems to be in perfect working order and has been for the past few months.

I bought the bike as my first serious MTB, it was recommended to me by one of the store managers. As it turned out he was right on the money because it's upgradeable and it was very easy to get used to. The frame seems very strong, and I'm fairly surprised I haven't seen a crack in it considering its price; I do lots of drops from trials riding and lots of drop offs in places like gravel pits. Since nothing has gone wrong with the frame at all I'm especially pleased and plan to keep it in good working order for as long as I can. Hopefully I can hit 10,000 miles with this bike, it's just got this really nice feel to it that I've developed over the 2 1/2 years I've had it for.
5 chilis for value seeing as how durable it is, but 4 for overall since I'll be realistic and understand I had to put a lot of money into it to get it to the point where it is now.

Bottom Line:This was my first serious bike, and I have beat the hell out of it, and it's still ready for more. I'm big (200lbs), and I do 3 foot drops, and staircases, and have only broken wheels and pedals. The frame is tough. And if, like me you don't have the money for a Litespeed, it's worth upgrading. Great first bike. I give 4 for value cuz it does have crappy pedals, and Alivio stuff(bearings) wear out. Overall a 4 cuz it is a cheap steel hardtail, so it's kinda boring, after gawking at $2400 FS bikes.

I have loved the frame geometry and havne't felt this comfortable in all of the bikes I have ridden. Strengths:Reliability, Frame Strength, Geometry
Weaknesses:Weight, Paint nicks easily
Bike Setup:Stock except front shock
Bottom Line:Bought my first mt.bike, a new Timberline back in 1994, still riding trouble-free to date!!! All stock except I added an Answer Pro Forx front shock when new (did not buy the FS). Cromo frame is super, though a heavy, never cracked, bent, only some paint chipping from rocks/crashes. Shimano Alivio components not high end but they have done the job well.
I was thinking about upgrading the bike, lot of worn pieces now, but I broke down and bought a 2000 GT Backwoods ($800). Still, for $450 bucks (1994), GT has earned my business! Don't know how the new 2001 Timberline will stack up, it looks more like a hybrid then a mountain bike, though the Timberline is aluminum now. Highly recommend the 1994-1999 Timberline for the beginner.

Favorite Trail:Elevator - Victor Falls
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Strong! Everyone complains about the weight, which is pretty high. However, it's nothing you can't get used to. And I'd rather build up some muscle groups than have to go out and buy a new bike because the frame was too flimsy.
Weaknesses:The rims. Oh GOD the rims. Remember what I said about how I like parts that can take a beating? Well, the stock rims can't. I haven't had them taco yet, but they're so trashed that I'm fearing the day that I'm roaring down a hill and hit a rock at just the wrong angle just a little too hard.
Bike Setup:All stock except new Panaracer semi-slicks that I switch on/off for road-riding.
Bottom Line:A good deal. I bought this bike three years ago for $700 new, and have gotten a great ride out of it the entire time. The stock RockShox Indy's are decent (although upgrading has always been on my list of things to do), and give a moderately smooth ride over most trails. However, the rims are a little weak, and don't quite hold up as well as I'd like to the type of beating I administer. Don't listen to what anyone says about the weight. The frame is very strong, and you can always work harder. But if your frame breaks because it was too light, you're out several hundred bucks.

Bottom Line:I bought this bike without really knowing what i was getting into. At the time i just wanted a bike that looked cool and would go from point A to B; and it did that, but that's about all. After awhile i became a little better and i realized my mistake, i had bought bike with basically the worst components available and with frame geometry that would limit it to only semi-hard-core riding. It could never be any better than that, no matter how many of the components i changed. The bottom line is, is that this is a beginners bike, nothing else, and it was good for that, nothing else. Since it wazs good for what it was meant for i geuss i can give it at least three.

Bottom Line:

I bought my Timberline after someone stole my old Marin. Ironically though, I had been in the need of a better bike.. Well. I needed a new bike to get back in the right trails, so to say. The Timberline was in the right price category and I trusted the GT quality. I test-drove it, and absolutely loved the nimble handling of it. The parts were not good, but the frame was and still is great for it's price. (Reynolds tubing.) And it was rigid. So my intension was to upgrade it gradually as money and time permitted. The only parts so far that have broken, are the Alivio cranks, that I replaced with LX. Then went the STX rear der. That has been replaced with a '99 XT. The right rapidfire shifter has received many serious hits from my knee and some other damage, so it will need a replacement part soon. Also I have equipped it with a new RockShox JettXC suspension. That improved the handling charachteristics a lot, after all the bike has been designed to be driven with a suspension fork. I have ridden the damn thing in almost any conditions imaginable, from +20 centigrade to -25 centigrade, without much problems. And I have enjoyed the ride. The Timberline is and excellent entry level cross country bike. Team GT - All Terra

It's not a bad bike to be honest-but it does have it's problems- like the frame wieghs around 23 pounds but it's very sturdy-the paint job is just terrible - THE BIG PROBLEM IS THE FREAKIN' COMPONENTS, wienman zac19 rims are made from tinfoil-ALIVIO crank and front derailer would be better used as guides for what to not put on a bike- WTB velicorapter tires are ok but wear down very quickly-tiogo alchemy headsets SUCKS-and the Indy C is too bouncy and has a tendency to bottom out or top out on the big stuff. But if you get the bike cheap and make a few minor modifications the frame will last forever...GOOD FRAME BAD PARTS

I actually have a GT Timberline, and I think it is great. It handles the toghest trails like a FS bike, and now that I am putting in some JudyXC forks, it would almost be racable. Sure it is a little heavy from the Crmo, but it will go almost everywhere, plust upgrade to some clipless pedals and you will have a wicked bike. My only complaint is the rims on this bike are not as strong, and do take a bit of bashing. But I am happy with it.

I have had my GT timberline for a year now and I love it. It is a 95.
The stx cranks cracked after very hard downhilling and jumping but were
replaced under recall. I bought the bike from a friend who needed the money
and have since upgraded the tires (from the worthless tioga psycho II) to
panaracer dusters, awsome tires!! Needs new grips but I love the old style
one piece handel-barend combo. The front rigid version fork is compleet
crap. I bent it in half while jumping a four foot ramp (upgraded to a
monatu sx 97, Aheadset and bontrager stem, seems like a new bike.). The
rapidfire alivo shifters work well unless you want to change gears under extreem
acceleration or cliff climbing cause they break the crappy shimanno ig
chain (broken 3 times). The rims are complete crap and bend when you look
at them. I need to upgrade them. The alivo cantilevers sucked really bad
and I had to change them to deore LX V-brakes which would not work with the
alivo brake seven speed shifter combo. I had to use the little pulley
tensioner which works great. The best thing about the bike is the frame
geometry. It is a very fast frame design and although the Cr Molly frame
is a bit heavy. The frame is extremely strong. I hit a brick wall doing
about 30 in rush hour traffic. Ouch! Have hit several trees that got in my
way. Have hit two telephone poles. Hit a two foot log downhilling. And
that is abought it. I upgraded the pedals to Look springless clipless
(love um). CONCLUSION!!
The bike has served me well through hard cross country and stunt riding.
I also ride to school everyday on it so it get's used a lot. For a weekend
rider I highly recomend this bike. For the serious rider I would save and
buy a Zaskar or STS DH.

It may have been only a ridgde bike but it would stand up to anything. Later I got a Quadra21R fork from a friend witch made it an awsome bike. The rims are a bit too flimsy so the wheels need trueing regulary, I rebuilt my rear wheel with 14g dt spokes and a mavic 517 rim. The brake pads don't last as long as they should so when they wear out throw on some cool stops. The v-brakes are awesome though. The bike may be a bit on the heavy side but it's definatly unbreakable. The Timberline is a great entry level bike with a great price.
