$500.00 | | Purchased At: | From a Friend | | Strengths: | The frame is very stiff, reliable, and light enough for hard core downhills and steep uphills. | | Weaknesses: | The tripple triangle frame (which is great) is difficult to put on a trunk mounted bike rack. In turn the frame is scratched horribly. No big deal | | Bike Setup: | Slowly built up to this: Manitou Skerab Comp fork w/ 80mm travel. Easton Stem and post. Titec Hellbent bars. Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1 (blue wall) tires. Spinergy Wheels (yellow spokes/blue rims). Ory grips (Blue). XT rear Cogset and derail'. LX shifters and front Derail'. Truvative Stylo Team GXP crank set. Avid dial 7 V-Brakes. CrankBros Eggbeaters Ti (Blue). All pulling in with a weight of 24 pounds.
| | Bottom Line: | I get a lot of compliments on this bike on how good it looks and how light it is. I always tell them to take it for a ride if they already have not jumped on it. It’s a blast to ride, handle, and jump around on. It is race ready! It will be hard to find another bike like this as far as weight, reliability, looks, and feel go. It still had the tits on the orignal tires. I rode this thing hard. I had to upgrade from the rigid front fork after an up close meeting with a stump. The Rock Shox Judy XC has done a great job. The stem mounting bolt broke after a month or so and im now on I think my 3rd stem. I have went through too many sets of tires to mention. I just put on my 4th seat. I still have the orignal STX components. I do need to replace them now as Im having some shift issues. Im dreading the day when I have to get a new bike. This has been the best! I may even look for a used Pantera if mine ever kicks the bucket. I imagine you can get one real cheap now. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I can't remember when I purchased it, but it had to be the very early nineties. | | Weaknesses: | None that I can think of. I don't think it is heavy compared to other bikes I have been on in that price range | | Similar Products Used: | Trek, Diamondback, Specialized | | Bike Setup: | Still has original SunTour equipment. $650.00 | | Purchased At: | Robbie's Bike Shop in Stockton, CA | | Strengths: | The frame is so solid, one of the strongest designs in the history of biking | | Weaknesses: | It is a tank, pretty heavy I mean graphite was a concept when this baby was hot in the showroom | | Similar Products Used: | first mountain bike | | Bike Setup: | complete deore group with front/rear blackburn racks and a full set of bags. Like say, I wasnot aggressive, just liked to tour. | | Bottom Line: | You know I ofter think about getting a new bike because this one is 15 years old. I crashed so hard I have been bruised, scratched, rolled up, ets. and one one occasion had to get sewn up. The frame however still remains solid. Been through 3 sets of wheels, 2 lower brackets, three sets of gear, and you't think I own stock in rubber because of all ot the road I chewed my tires up with, but hey rubber doesn't really count.
Like say, it is my first real mountain but set up for touring and that first bike is like your first of anything elst, it sticks. I have een he nae for 11 years and takenis on 3 cruises. I has been all overn the world; Japan (currently reside and too many cities/places to list), Okinawa, Hokkaido, Seoul, Baharain; UAE; Kuwait City; Pago Pago, O'ahu, Hawai'i, New Calodonia, Bunbury, Perth, Darwin, Cairns, Gellong, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Townsville (I love those last 6 places), Guam, Saipan, Vladivostok, Shanghai and of course all over the US, espicially my greate home state of CA. I take it on almost every short cruise and all of my long cruises. After 2 years of sea time, these ports all over the Pacific have been ridden.
I am about to do a complete rebuild because it is still cheaper than getting a new bike. But it is still like new regardless. The only drag is that it's a hard tail. When it is finally, dead, stolen, broken, burned up or in some other foorm decinigrated, then I'll go with a full suspension, until then................nah, I'm stickin' with my ol' Pantera just fine. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Stiff as rigor mortus. | | Weaknesses: | She's a heavy old girl. Canter lever brake mounts (well she is old) | | Similar Products Used: | ???? they don't make frames like this anymore! | | Bike Setup: | Only thing original is the front derailer and the frame. Currently running knesis forks, deore hydros (had a bracket made to mount the rear brake), LX running gear | | Bottom Line: | I love this old girl, bought it of a mate back in 92 or 93, can't remember. She's seen half the world with me on my travels and about 4 years of bicycle couriering. I reckon I've done about a 100,000+ km on her. She's seen 3 sets of wheels, 4 rear derailers, 2 sets of cranks, 4 44 tooth chain rings, 7 or 8 cassettes and chains, 2 seats and posts, and god knows how many tires. She spent 2 years hanging in the back shed in a sad state. She got stolen once and returned (Bit stupid to steal a bright orange/red bike that every courier reconises). She's been through rain, shine, mud and dust. No one builds frames like this anymore, I hope she'll out live me. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Ut Date Reviewed: December 26, 2004 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Purchased At: | used from friend 6 years ago | | Strengths: | Even though I have several much nicer bikes, my GT Pantera gets more use than anything I own. I bought this used from a friend with all the old crappy components and have switched everything out to XT/Sram 9.0sl and a Marzocchi Xfly 80mm fork. I think that the durability of this frame is what makes it stand out. Even thought it's not the lightest, you just never worry about it. I am going to keep riding this bike and continue to upgrade it until it dies; hopefully never. | | Weaknesses: | Flexy seat stays - original componentry sucks - even though the seat/top height are perfect for me, the top tube is a little short | | Similar Products Used: | Trek Fuel100, Trek liquid 30, Santa Cruz Chameleon (single speed), a bunch of road bikes | | Bike Setup: | Pantera frame - XT cranks, BB, frt.der. and brakes - Sram 9.0sl twisters and rear der. - XT hubs with Mavic 517's - Marzocchi X-fly 80mm fork - Ritchey post, stem and bars with a Flite saddle | | Bottom Line: | This was my first real mtb and it is still my favorite bike. There is something special about your first nice bike and when you personalize with all of your favorite componentry, you never want to get rid of it. For a relatively inexpensive frame, it is absolutely indestructible and worry free. I ride this everywhere from around town to really technical and difficult trails and it handles everything I throw at it. The weight penalty is well worth the added durability and it is stiff enough that it climbs great, particularily out of the saddle. When you stomp on it, it goes without the frame flexing on you. I added a Salsa brake booster to the rear end and it has taken care of the flexy brake boss problem. If you find one of these frames for a reasonable price, get it and ride it forever. Mine may become a single speed at some point in the future. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Conti's Bikes of Virginia Beach | | Strengths: | The frame is bullet proof, and suits me very well on technical trails. The Components have lasted since 97 without missing a beat, but the punishment has also been limited to road riding and weekend trail riding. Only recently have I began to thrash, but the parts are still going strong | | Weaknesses: | You get what you pay for, there really are no great weakness's, the components handle what they were designed for. I do wish the Shifters and Brakes would have been separate components rather than the one piece STX installed on the Pantera, upgrading becomes a tad bit more costly as you have to replace more than one component to add new brakes. The Cantelever brakes work ok but again, I would have preferred installed V brakes to allow acceptance of a set of shocks for the front. To istall a set of Rock Shox requires installing a new set of shifters, brakes and brake levers. | | Similar Products Used: | Panasonic MTB (learner bike) | | Bike Setup: | Currently retains all STX components, (not bad for a 97) but sitting ready for installation is a pair of AVID Arch Rival V Brakes with SD-7 Levers, STX-RC Shifters, Rock Shox Judy SL, with further improvemtns planned. | | Bottom Line: | THe bike is outstanding, I have been riding on the STX stuff now every weekend on local racing tracks around Virginia and it is still going well with proper maintenance, the frame is the strong point, I will upgrade this frame with new components until it blows up under me, I love the frame. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Climbs like you wouldnt believe. | | Weaknesses: | Components were ok for the money paid but the frame certainly deserves better. Wheels built from the factory are crap (mavic 221). Wheels will probably be the first replacement. | | Similar Products Used: | Ridden one or two hardtails since and demo'ed giant xtc nrs1 but nothing comes close. | | Bike Setup: | 1998 intern'l version that came with indy xc's | | Bottom Line: | This was my first (proper) mtb and hopefully there is still plenty left in it. I think ive replaced everything on it at least once (except for the stem and shifters) but after 40,000 km or so this is to be expected. Frame has stood up to more than i care to mention... it started out as my weekend, ride anywhere, mtb as much as possible sort of bike, then some xc racing and now mostly commuting to and from work and as a result it has been involved in numerous collisions with trees, cars, dirt and the occasional pedestrian and it just keeps going. Im 6ft which seems to suit the medium frame size pretty well... if I had a frame made specifically for me, they would come up with THIS frame. I cannot recommend this bike enough for its price. Best thing I've ever bought. I dented the downtube on a concrete ledge recently but that's all I've had to worry about. Climbing is not that great out of the saddle. The rear tire doesn't stick well. the stx cranks weighed like boulders. It was prime for upgrades when i took it off the floor. Frame is excellent as usual from GT.
I use it for urban assault, trials and free riding w/o disc brakes though. Which sux. There's a little flex in the stays but doesn't bother me. I'm still on the stock STX hubs and I've only serviced them once. I also have the stock stem, front rim, and the headset. They don't need replacing at all. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I've had it for 2 years now (97-99) and it has never failed me. I've snapped enough bottom brackets and i thought that would screw up the BB area but the frame was stil in top knick. | | Weaknesses: | Gt should have specked this bike with better components, tyres, wheels, handlebars, seat, cranks, rims and especially the fork. The Indy XC's are just pathetic. I've got a Long travel kit in their and some Plush plus springs and the fork nearly pops out o it's sockets when you jump and the fork isn't resposive at all. The stock seatpost is crummy (mine bent after a year) the stock headset and STX cranks are kind of lame also, but for US $600 you'd be hard pressed to find a better ride. It's still my only MTB, and other riders ask me about it wherever I ride. I bought a size smaller than I should have (16 for my 5'10 frame), but that's fine for me as I like a more BMX-ish ride. The frame is completely bombproof - I can't see how anyone could break it without crashing and doing more damage to themselves. It also looks really cool with those big tubes and bb colour. Unfortunately, it's not the lightest frame out there, but it's a great first 'serious' bike and even better value for money. Well worth upgrading. It was replaced by WTB saddle. This bike is tuff!!!!, the frame I have is ball burnished, thank God, NO SCRACHES!!!! This bike is worthy of many more upgrades. I would give the Pantera 5(V)(quatro) flaming kitty(gato) pooo!!!!!!! Did I cover my 50 words? I rather be mountainbiking than playing golf with a bunch of old farts. Golf courses are taking over our trails revolt!!!!!

I've been riding my Pantera for about a year now. I have to say that it has perfomed brilliantly. It has got me through various expeditions and more. This was my first real bike. The price was right and the componentry was ideal for someone who was new to the sport. Since then I have upgraded to JUDY forks and new bits of drive train, but it's still the same bike and it still works and performs like a dream.A true bike | Overall Rating: |

Had a '90 GT Tequesta several years ago, and knew I wanted another one. Chose the GT Pantera because of the aluminum frame for stiffness. Shopped around and these things (mtn bikes) are expensive! I like the Pantera because it's got decent components: the STX are just fine, although if you are a hard core rider going up steep, rough stuff, you may want an upgrade. I use mine in the city and around town. The Psycho K tires are all that you have heard: high rolling resistance and dangerous on turns. But the rest, all STX components, are great. No front shocks on mine. The bike is _very light_ and looks trick, unlike skinny cro-mo or the same old designs. So, I got a smoking deal on a 1995 (still in stock, new!?) at cyclerecycle.com - 399.00. A low end, 1998 GT cro-mo costs at least that much. I've had it for about three months and I am very happy with its preformance, ride, everything. | Overall Rating: |

the patera has an excellent frame for the most part. the steer tube angle is too relaxed for front suspention though (1996). i bought the bike rigid and put on manitou sx. feels too relaxed, no good for tight technical riding. the gears suck too. stx bites. i should have shelled out more money and got the avalanche. | Overall Rating: |

bought my bike 3yrs ago and have upgraded everything....except the frame. The frame is still rock solid. If you buy a great frame, its easy and fun to replace the in-expensive components for higher performing ones. This makes you ONE with your bike. Any of the GT frames will perform beyond your expectations. But buying the Pantera for the frame at the great price and upgrading the components, will take you through the mountain biking experience. Ok, first up I have to say the Pantera is one of the sexiest bikes out there (other than the Trek Y bikes...mo' money DOH) I've takin' mine to hell and back and it's still alive and kickin' . My upgrades are as follows... Judy XC's (Must have!) SID's would be nice! ... Scott AT-1 bars... Serfas ARS saddle (Kevlar jobby) Shimano V-Brakes (awesome difference, great stoppies) . Next up will be some Time ATAC pedals (I've heard the kick ass over SPD's especially in the mud) I'm still considering some Spinergy's just for the fact of posing (which we all love to do) They look kewl. The frame on the Pantera is bullet proof!! No way this baby is going to give up the ghost, so as far as I'm concerned I'll be keeping it for awhile yet. My aim is to make it as light as possible, should be able to drop atleast 1-2lbs.... or die trying. Botton line, it's a great bike for the price with alot of potential. And alot of fun, which as you all know is the most important factor! HARD TAILS ROCK!!! AND WILL LIVE FOREVER If you want a Freeride Get a bloody Motorcross bike! GO HARD, OR GO HOME I'm giving it the whole insulada.. 5 Flamin' rice cakes here mate! | Overall Rating: |

The GT Pantera is discontinued in the United States but is available internationally, Canada is considered international thus it has the GT Pantera for 1998. The 98 GT Pantera comes with an Indy XC, STX-RC/LX drivetrain, lx v-brakes, kore stems and is 6000 series aluminum made in taiwan most likely by Genesis. For people seeking the Ricochet, in the United States it has replaced partially the place of the GT Pantera but internationally the GT Ricochet is discontinued. The GT Pantera comes in Billet(greyish kinda ball burnished looking) or yellow(Not so nice), all this comes at a price tag of $1200 Canadian money. This bike is well worth and is very beautiful, if you are trying to choose between other bikes and the Pantera, I would recommend you the GT Pantera since it will definately satisfy you! IT IS A GREAT BIKE!!!!! If I could, I would give this bike tons of chilis. | Overall Rating: |

The GT was such a light bike (this is very important from a girl's point of view, especially when you have to carry your bike while climbing down small waterfalls) and an easy ride that I went out and bought the GT Pantera. I absolutely love it! It handles great uphill, downhill, through mud and sand! I recommend getting a GT for anyone thinking of buying their first bike! | Overall Rating: |

I have a 96 ball burnished Pantera, after my stolen candy evergreen Tempest 95 and all I have to say is that I love GT's. Good bikes for the money, maybe Giant or other brands can offer better components and frames a bit lighter, but I thing no other brand can offer the combination betwwen sexy look of GT frames and good components at an affordable price. I live in a tropical country, close to big forests, high variability weather and almost extreme conditions and nothing stops to my GT (unless when the rider surrenders...!).About ball burnished color I have a question : after a few rides the frame got some marks of rain and sweat and I want to know how to get it out. I have proven car wax but nothing... if somebody knows how... please...General info about upgrades: Onza CWA bar ends, ROCKSHOX Judy SL 97, LX V-brakes, IRC missile 2.25 tires, Tektro bridges, DCD crud chain tensioner, STX RC rear hub (if you compares the original silent clutch weigth tons !!) and Cateye Tomo computer.GT, the BEST !! | Overall Rating: |

First thing - I like my bike very much. The frame is rock solid, it looks good (oh so important when hitting Retro Cafe for a post ride coffee), but for the price (disproportionately bigger in Australia compared to the states i think), it could have at least had some LX on it. It also seems a little on the heavy side when compared to similar Giants - that said, I think the GT would probably last longer. The only upgrade I've made so far is the seat. The gonzo like WTB seat was fine, but I saw one of those plush armchair-like TIOGA seats and had to have one. | Overall Rating: |

I have had a Pantera since April of 93. It was my main transportation for three years while working in Germany. I've replaced 6 cassettes, 8 chains (maybe more) and every other thing on it that turns. The only thing I haven't replaced due to wear and tear was the shifters (Shimano Exage), stem and seatpost(GT). I paid $650 in 93 and have 're-invested' about $1500 into it through upgrades and replacement of worn parts. I have OVER 24,000 miles (not kilometers) on the frame. I had to replace the bike computer battery 3 times now... We've been to the emergency root twice. I know, here I am waxing on poeticly on a bike, but I won't EVER give bike up. But that Ti. Obed loooooksss soooo goooood. I would give it 5 stars, but you need to upgrade the components to get a prime ride. Sorry GT, maybe this year your lighter, but my bike's still heavy after the upgrades. | Overall Rating: |

Whether weaving through Pittsburgh traffic, attacking the trails, or going to class...the STX-RC drivetrain, fat aluminum frame, good rubber, LX V-brakes, and WTB saddle (it DOES look scary) all perform flawlessly.
