Strengths:I have always felt the whole bike is well built with quality components. Never had a complaint. the Blue color was always striking and an attention getter
Weaknesses:Weight
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Completely stock
Bottom Line:I have owned my GT Outpost since 1994. I have never had a complaint about my bike besides the weight. My bike has been with me through school, Colorado, and even to Korea. I always felt it was going to break on one day but it had not failed until about two weeks ago when my rear cassete went out. I have taken my bike to places I should not have, but it took a beating and kept right on going. For an entry level bike I got more than my moneys worth out of it. I could have probably been through three or more bikes by now. Any one looking to enter into the offroad arena, and on a budget, should definitely look into the GT Outpost

Favorite Trail:to and from work
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $380.00
Strengths:I like the fact that I got a decent deal on the bike to begin with! With the lightweight frame, 21 speeds and shocks, it made my 20 mile ride through to work a piece of cake! The 21 speeds was nice going up the steep hills too!
Weaknesses:Not really a product weakness, just a thought - wish I could find an authorized dealer near my small town to do repairs and tune ups! Other than that, none that I can think of off hand!
Similar Products Used:Had a 15 speed huffy that I buried. about 1500 miles on it and broke one of the gears....not bad for $150 bucks...but not as nice as my GT
Bike Setup:What the factory put on it! I only added a bike rack that attaches to the seat post. And I ride at night, so a small headlight and tail light so I can be seen. Other than that, it's factory!
Bottom Line:Bottom line? Excellent buy! I'm not big into the biking scene, just wanted a reasonable alternative to driving, and this was it. Decent buy for the money and I haven't had ANY problems with it. NO complaints.

I would say though, that if you're an amateur biker or just want something to ride back and forth to work or just for exercise, this is a good buy.

Weaknesses:none for the price i paid for it. I practically stole it for 40 dollars so i guess GT bikes are popular with this thief.

Bottom Line:this bike was in new condition when i bought it so let me see. This bike the outpost is by far the best bike i have ever ridden. I have to pinch myself to make sure im not dreaming. With the price of gas as high as it is this will be my transportation to and from work.

Favorite Trail:all of them
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:Play It Again Sports
Strengths:Very agile, turns in nicely, easily upgradable. Don't forget it has the most durable frame under 1000.
Weaknesses:The ride is a little stiff, but its to be expected from a non-suspended model. The pedals aren't the best.
Similar Products Used:Numerous Trek bikes, a few Giants and a KHS Alite.
Bike Setup:All stock except for the Maxxis Worm Drive tires(highly recomended) and I had to go ahead and put a kickstand on it(call me a wimp).
Bottom Line:Has to be the best beginner's bike on the market. Very forgiving and the most durable for the cost. I work at Play It Again where I can test ride many bikes and have yet to come across one better than the GT Outpost anywhere close to the price. I just purchased a KHS Alite suspended bike, and I think I like the GT better. I reccomend some clipless pedals and a good padded seat(it's a rough ride).

Strengths:Great frame, decent shifters, tires
Weaknesses:None.

Bike Setup:Stock. Except for the ultra high density Cannondale nylon pouch with reflector strip. What can I say? I went all out!
Bottom Line:Great bike, and I really miss it. Some jerk stole it straight out of my basement.

I liked this bike so much that I really only considered a GT to replace it (even if I really wanted a Cannondale but couldn't justify the expense). Waiting for an '05 Avalanche 1.0 Disc I ordered from a local shop.

Weaknesses:The rear derailler finally gave out on me, went through a chain, probly my fault though.
Similar Products Used:Nothing I can compare it to.
Bike Setup:Left stock exept for new bar grips.
Model 1994 gt outpost
Bottom Line:I bought this bike when I was 12 years old. I loved it. It was bright orange with some wicked white splashed on stripe jobbers. I beat the tar out of it. I would have contests with friends to see how far we could jump off things, I would always win by at least 5 feet. I hit trees, jumped off 4 foot drop offs, and never once bent a rim. Still my favorite bike, even though I no longer have it and have long since outgrown it.
I have an aluminum Raleigh now and it just doesn't have the toughness to it that my outpost did.

Favorite Trail:anything that scares me
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:In UK outlet
Strengths:Takes all the beating a heavy-handed amateur like me can throw at it. Great frame. Feels just as safe on fast downhill open roads - with all the traffic beating down on you - as it does on dirt.
Weaknesses:Brakes squeak a bit. Saddle is a bit of a killer
Similar Products Used:Nothing of note
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I bought the bike so I could get back into cycling with my son. Took it to a great open air mud track where local BMXers ride. Decided to relive my youth and take a BIG jump on it (much to the amusement of the BMXers). I landed so hard, I bent the handlebars down two inches (and nearly broke my wrists), but the bike didn't even blink! Great ride, extremely fast compared to other mountain bikes I've come up against. Great bike for older types like me getting back into cycling again. Excellent value for money!!

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $275.00
Purchased At:Yucipa Bike Center
Strengths:The Outpost is a great bike! What else can i say? I have had the bike for about a year, and it has been GREAT to me. It takes 15 stairs perfect. The frame alone is worth it all, being so light and strong. The parts, even though they are a bit on the low end, work without error. The tires have lasted a year also. Im 14. I ride. When i ride I ride HARD!~!~!
Weaknesses:The rims tend to be a little on the weak side, needing trueing about each week. The petals have been snapped in half, and ders have been acting up lately.
Similar Products Used:Trek Bruiser 1.
Bike Setup:I changed out the old fork with a newer RST. The cranks have been changed out to a Suntour model, but everything else is stock!

Purchased At:Hellebuyk's Bike & Mower
Strengths:Rock-solid never-say-die frame/fork/wheelset.
Weaknesses:Basic tuning of the derailleurs, stock seat, front brake caliper cable strap.
Similar Products Used:My dad was their mechanic and I've always ridden something since I was 4. Vintage Schwinn Contintental my highest mileage beater.
Bike Setup:Basically stock, replaced seat (I want an unsprung narrow brooks), Rear derailleur (my fault) with Shimano Acera, Sachs chain, Cheng Shin rear tire
Bottom Line:This is the 91 model, probably close to 1000 to 1500 miles. Never needed full rebuild. Regreased front hub bearings. Stock rims retrued countless times, as the rear wheel gets severe punishment from my sprints. Best hill climber I've ever ridden! Uphill about 30 - 40 degrees with rocks, gravel, sand a pleasure. Have "punished" the beast in snow with pressure lowered tires to 6-8 in deep -- fun. Just clean it UP when you're done. Inspires great confidence for any riding short of full comp. Very fast in front of suspended bikes with jeans and backpack of books!

Strengths:Very well built and has a solid frame
Weaknesses:The pedals have been giving me some trouble in wet weather and the rear delever couldnt withstand some mud and poped off into my wheel forcing me to buy a new wheel.
Bike Setup:I try hard to make a good bike better, in the front I have replaced the old RST shocks with Rock Shox Sid Race shocks, for the handlebars I picked the Easton Monkeylites which are actually a very good make of bars, wheels its only the best for me I am using Mavic Deemax wheels (yellow). Back is pretty much the same the only change is a GT mountain delreluer.
Bottom Line:The outpost in my opinion a very well done bike by GT. It has a great ride for anytype of trail and gives you there good power of a hard tail.

Weaknesses:Light riders may find bike harsh.
Similar Products Used:Kona Cinder Cone, Huffy All-Terrain

Bottom Line:The 1999 GT Outpost is a classic. It's too bad that the 2000 model forgoes the rigid fork for a cheap suspension fork. Because it's rigid, it steers very accurately and feels very agile and swift on flat terrain. Many people report to "blow by people with more expensive bikes." Obviously, this is a result of the ultra-stiff platform on which the Outpost rides that no front-suspension hardtail can match. There just isn't a market for rigid bikes anymore. And this is sad, because no suspension fork will ever give the classic ride of a rigid.

The frame and GT geometry is simply beautiful. If the frame was double-butted, it would be perfect. The frame and entire bike is on a very stiff and solid platform. The bike is heavy, but because it is so stiff, it feels very light and nimble.

My GT Outpost has been converted to a commuter bike w/ the addition of slicks and toe-clips.

Also the reliability of this bike is extraordinary. I rammed the bike into a wall going 16 mph and the bike suffered no damage besides an out-of-true wheel. Also, I rammed the bike into a cement garage overhang when I forgot that I had it on my roof rack. It suffered only cosmetic damage.

I would recommend this bike for beginners, commuters, and advanced riders who want to return to the classic aluminum rigid ride.

Favorite Trail:Perry Lake Trail, Lawrence River Trail, Clinton State Park Tails, & Landahl Park Trails
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Inexpensive well made bike from an established manufacturer. It's a great bike for a new rider. And if you end up not enjoying bike riding, no problem because you only spent $300 for it.
Weaknesses:If you get into extreme riding, you will eventually want to buy a more expensive bike with better components and lighter frame. I wish that rigid fork was a little stronger, but it is adequate for a commuter or light action bike.
Bike Setup:Stock except for a Salsa seat post quick release and a used set of Shimano clipless pedals. I have had to replace (not upgrade) the rigid front fork once.
Bottom Line:Having not owned any bike in 20 years, I bought the 1999 GT Outpost when I needed a commuter. Once my car was finally repaired, the bike was suddenly useless, so I decided to take it out on a single-track trail one day, and the rest was history.

I fell in love with riding the trails, and since then, I have ridden my Outpost REALLY HARD at least once a week for over a year. I have ridden on fast twisty flat trails and hilly technical out-of-bounds trails, on long 26 mile loops, and on short 3 mile sprints, in blazing hot a sun, at night in freezing headwinds with below zero wind chill, on rocks and snow and mud and sand and streams and hard packed dirt and even the occasional asphalt road. This bike has rarely given me any trouble.

I feel that the rigid suspension has actually helped me improve my riding skills quickly by forcing me to choose the best line through corners and over obstacles, though I wish the front fork had been a little stronger. The only things that have had to be replaced because of wear-and-tear are the quick release on the seat post and the front fork. I have had very few mechanical problems with it except for some drive train issues. I have never had to walk off of a trail with this bike, but now that I am becoming a more serious rider, I do find it that it needs to go to the shop more often than I would like, (mainly the drive train, which is as much my fault as it is the components. I should clean my bike more often than I do.)

Basically, this bike was not designed to be beaten as hard as I have beaten it, but it has never left me stranded, and I plan to turn it into a single speed once I upgrade to a new bike. Regardless of what happens, I will always look back on this bike with nostalgic smile on my face.

Strengths:Definately stiff, makes for predictability in handling and really brings out the best in a XC rider.
Weaknesses:Non clipless pedals, stem too high, but hey, I got for a $100 from a neighbor who just bought it new for $389, so who is complaining!?
Similar Products Used:Ridden mostly road but have a Trek Hybrid that is used for commuting, a whole different species of riding! I have ridden a front suspended Trek and hardly felt the need for it, maybe heavier riders feel the need more.
Bike Setup:Put on clipless pedals, longer/lower stem and a set of slicks to use it as a commuter while the Trek was in rebuild, great bike. Now its back to knobbies and trail ridding, some single track, mostly wooded motor cycle trails, and it rides great!
Bottom Line:For a few hundred bucks this baby is going to get a face lift with 9 speed components, probably LX, but I think I'm gonna keep that stiff fork, its a hell of a boost to pass others on front or full suspended megabuck bikes! GT makes one great frame and with this one, STEEL is REAL! No alloys here, just chromolly, a great ride, and me! If under $500 is your ticket with a few bucks to stash in the future for an upgrade or two, this is an excellent bike. If you want the high cost rides, don't be caught out there letting me pass you on this baby!

Strengths:
This frame is beautiful. Given that this is non-butted, the bike is extraordinarily stiff, responsive, and handles like a dream.
Weaknesses:
bike is easy to 'jack because of quick releases. GT bikes are popular among thieves
Similar Products Used:
Schwinn Mesa
Trek 6000, 6500, 7000, 8000
Gary Fisher Aquila, HKEK
CDale Super Raven 2000

Bottom Line:Jeezus this bike is awesome. The frame is absolutely extraordinary for a $340 bike. I rode everything from a Trek 6000, 6500, 7000, 8000, to cannondales, and while other butted frames gave a more forgiving ride, the GT Outpost was the stiffest and most energy efficient ride. There are a lot of $500-$1000 bikes out there, but even if you are in the market for something in that range, try a GT Outpost. Yesterday, I went out for a ride on this. I rocketed past other riders with CroMo Treks and DiamondBacks. The bike is very maneuverable and agile at high and low speeds. The speed and control was so exhilarating that I was left with no desire to ever want more from a bike.

VERY STRONG,STIFF BIKE. TAKES A GOOD BEATING.
Weaknesses:
NONE CONSIDERING WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A $300 BIKE
Bike Setup:
STOCK
Bottom Line:THIS IS ONE TOUGH BIKE. I HAVE A FULL SUSPENSION BIKE AND EVEN THOUGH IT IS EASIER TO RIDE I STILL TAKE OUT THE OUTPOST QUITE OFTEN BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN. GET ONE, BEAT THE HELL OUT OF IT AND SMILE! FIVE STARS FOR BEING SUCH A GREAT VALUE.

Bottom Line:This bike is very responsive and stiff. WTB VelociRaptors are very grippy. The pro-max v-brakes are extremely powerful, but squeak if not adjusted every week or so. Weinman Zac rims are good at this price. Shifters are very good, better than anything else at this price.

Strengths:
VALUE - lots of features and quality for the $: aluminum frame, good shifters and brakes. none of those kooky gripshifters that you find in this price range.
Weaknesses:
pedals are cheap, but easily replaced
Similar Products Used:
diamondback, nishiki, trek, specialized all models in $250 - $450 range
Bike Setup:
stock - will be upgrading to suspension fork soon, probably rockshok jettxc. I did get one of those cateye computers to see how fast i can go. so far 34mph is the max, will try faster when i get a helmet!
Bottom Line:best value under $500, i am beating the dirt out of this and so far nothing broke except pedal reflectors and chain (my fault!). rocks, roots, curbs, stairs and dives off my patio wall, it is handling the abuse well.
BUY THIS BIKE, e-mail me if you want to ask any questions!

little and the front shifter fails to shift every

better than the gripshifters for me. for $300 i
don't think you can beat it. i give it five flaimy things

Bottom Line:This is an awsome bike that is totaly upgradable! I Got it because I neded a bike to ride around campus but it turned out to be an awsome bike with midrange capabilities. I plan on upgrading it slowley and keeping it. I rode a GT that was a lit mor pricy and couldn't tell much difference.

Bottom Line:I have had the Outpost for about 6 years and it has been serving me well. I was never much of an off road rider, but I did abuse it fairly well. This bike has held up through numerous bike accidents and the frame is in good shape. I just bought a new GT Karakoram and I love it, but the Outpost served my purposes great for all those years. I am currently in the process of taking the Outpost apart completely to upgrade it. For now the bike gets 3 stars, four stars if you upgrade some of the components.

Bottom Line:

I own an Outpost (maybe a 98 model...) and it is the first mountain bike I've owned. I've put well over 200 miles on it commuting to school and work which is near my apartment. I haven't even been on a trail yet (when I do get on a trail I'm going ballistic)!!!!!! As for riding around town, it's great - stiff frame, nice brakes, nice shifters, all for $299.99. I highly recommend this bike to get started with for your first year or so on a mountain bike (I'm an experienced road rider), if you ride every day. If you ride once in a while, this bike will last you for a long time. Only shocks are needed, but other than that it's held up great (I took a spill on it three months ago breaking my jaw on both sides, and the damage was nothing more than a scratch - well made).

I got my Outpost a few months ago and I have been beating the hell out of
it!:)) It works great!! The frame is super stiff which I like cause it makes
a really nice climbing bike. It came with crappy pedals but I am gonna put some downhill pedals on soon.;) If you are looking for a decent rigid bike the
Outpost is the way to go!! (just swap the derailler and pedals!!):P
