Submitted by steve richardson a Weekend Warrior from Durham England
Date Reviewed: January 23, 2006
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $200.00
Strengths:light frame, gears work fine
Weaknesses:Not all the original parts are very good, especially the forks and bottom bracket
Similar Products Used:Some Trek hardtail with Manitou SX's
Bike Setup:As bought, except: rst381DH forks, Ritchey Stem, JamminTT bars, Alexrims rims, IRC Notos Tyres, and some posher pedals
Bottom Line:I agree with many of the riders out there who say that the bike is ok when its bought, but a few upgrades make such a difference.

The front of the bike was a bit cramped and heavey, i now have a lighter (and longer) stem and handlebars it handles like a completly different bike, very nice indeed!
I'll be upgrading the shocks to some lightweight Manitous soon and then i think it will be perfect for me.

The frame is quite lightweight, and feels very strong-no flexing when pedalling hard or going over bumps.

now for the bad bits:
The paint seems to chip very easily, especially on the underside of the downtube where the gear cables are located.

The bottom bracket is on its last legs, and i hardley abuse the bike much. (it is a few years old now however)

The forks it comes with are pretty budget, i doubt many people keep them.

That all said, i dont agree with the people over here replacing everything, or breaking the bike within 6 months. Its an entry level bike for a start and thats really what you get. Not bad, but then dont be surprised not to find XT stamped on everything. And if you shear a bike in two(!!) (as one person from bristol did) maybe you should think about how you treat and maintain your bike? Accidents arent always caused by faulty material you know.

Favorite Trail:kijit80@yahoo.com
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Mcminn Bicycle Service
Strengths:The frame is the hardest thing break and is made of light weight Aluminum. The paint is thick and hard to chip. The seat and seat post are not to bad. The frame and some of the components can take a lot of abuse.
Weaknesses:On hard landings the chain can fall off and get caught between the rear cassette and the frame. The shifters, break pads, and the pedals had to go.
Similar Products Used:Bmx style bikes
Bike Setup:everything else original Except the following: Rapid fire shifters, Crankbrothers pedals, Bontrager seat, and Rock shocks seat post.
Bottom Line:It is an all around good bike. It can take a lot of punishment. But it needs to be setup to your riding style for it to benefit you.

Favorite Trail:White hills, street, Port Kirwan
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $460.00
Purchased At:Freeride mountain sports
Strengths:I have been riding this bike now for four years!! Trust me, THE FRAME is very good. It is lightwieght but very strong! The v- brakes are tough and long lasting, and suprisingly the derailer can take massive abuse. The rims will take a decent amount of abuse.
Weaknesses:The BB is pretty crappy. So are the cranks. Rims will give out under a lot of freeride/downhill. I did manage to bend the bars(but after 3 years). If it matters to you the bike cant fit more thatn a 2.2 rear tire.
Similar Products Used:I havent needed to anything else!
Bike Setup:Now:Marzocchi Bomber(4inch), Truvativ holzfellar cranks, Fsa BB, Truvativ husseleft stem, titec bars, Atomlab GI street custom built wheelset(deore hubs, DT swiss spokes), Vee Rubber tires, Hayes HMX-1 disc brake, Promax rear v-brake, Jaguar v pads, Axiom jumping pedals, Scwhinn seat, Shimano cassette, INTENSE locking grips, stock derailers, shifters, and seat post.
Bottom Line:This is a good bike! It is an amazing bike for someone to get when they are getting really into riding and upgade as they go on. Depending on your riding style, this bike completely stock will last you different amounts of time. If you love cross country, then this will last a long time, if you are dirt jumping, it will last a while too. If you are like me and mostly freeride/downhill/street,well then after a year you will definetly need some new components. I would recommend changing the fork, unless you do light riding. Same goes for the wheels. Dont put on more than a five inch fork. BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS: This bike has a very, very good frame. It is good for whatever you want to do, it responds well. The stock components are a little weak and somewhat heavy. Great bike to upgrade. Trust me, after four years, and im still riding the bike on all terrain possible(Freeride, street, trials, downhill, jumping)I can tell you its a tough frame that is comparable in strength to that of much more expensive!

Weaknesses:Poor parts!!! i upgraded everything allmost sofar! the front an rear delrailers are poor thats the next thing i am upgrading! The factory parts on the bike wasnt top of the line the parts worked good if your on street but when you got in the dirt it was differnt story! i had a problem with the chain poping off the gears an get stuck up hill

Price Paid: $195.00
Purchased At:eBay (where else?)
Strengths:Frame rigidity, flashy yellow, GT reliability, weight
Weaknesses:components, components, components.
Similar Products Used:Kona, Specialized, Giant, Iguana
Bike Setup:Raceface cranks, engagement 22/32/44 rings, XTR rear d, XT front d, deore BB, mavic 231 w/XT hubs, bazooka seat, bontrager carbon fiber bars, answer titanium stem, aheadset, and specialized manitau answer forks, ritchey clipless, and a partridge in a pear tree.
Bottom Line:Great entry level bike. The price is right, and if you find a nice overstock at eBay or something it allows you to upgrade the sorry, embarrasing, heavy, and chinsy components. The original stock components are very lousy. The 32 small ring won't allow you to do any serious climbing, unless you have Arnies calves. The Suntour XCR shocks weigh about as much as the entire bike itself. I shaved a LOT of weight just by replacing the forks. The BB looks like something that Huffy would even pass on.(which I didn't know about untill it needed to be replaced for the new cranks and rings.
Overall, it's a great base for a hands on builder if you're into that sort of thing.

Strengths:Exellent frame with really good geometry, ideal for most terrain. handles DH sections with ease in comparison with other hard tails which cost far more.
Weaknesses:Drive-train not designed for cross country riding, Wheel rims big heavy and flexy. most components require upgrading within a short period of riding time.

Bottom Line:Apart from upgrading every component, the bike is an exellent choice for the beginner. having to upgrade the componentry gives you the rider exellent bike component knowledge and understanding of what mountain biking and bike mainainance is really all about. It really handles the rough stuff very well. I would reccomend it to anyone who is just getting started in the noble art of mountain biking.

Bottom Line:This is the perfect starter for my 10 year old daughter and anyone looking for a decent bike on a budget. Fit and finish are a1. Despite the bad rap on the components it shifts flawlessly with no rubbing, missing or jumping. Endo's are a snap. You can actually bounce it like a pogo stick.

Favorite Trail:Mt Dissapointment
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:Melbourne Bicycle Centre
Strengths:the stiff frame, and i like the baby blue colour.
Weaknesses:the whole driveline! ive had heaps of trouble, replacing the bottom bracket, freewheel and chain. it still needs a different front derailer, it rubs on both the large and small chainrings: metal on metal makes for a serene ride not.
Similar Products Used:i test-rode most other bikes in the $500 AU price bracket.
Bike Setup:just basic accessories added, bar ends, computer, water bottle cages.
Bottom Line:dont buy this bike.

it was thrown together by GT when they were going under (just before they were sold) probably for quick cash flow. the freewheel spacing didnt match the shifters or chain. the front derailer isnt the right size, and rubs continuously, and the bottom bracket fell apart when removed.

ive taken it back to Melbourne Bicycle Centre 10 times, and they still havent fixed it properly!! i wish they and GT would get it together with their warranty claims. they obviously dont care about us here in Australia.

its been a very disappointing bike to own and ride.

Strengths:Great overall value for price . Can't break the frame ( I know , I've tried ).
Weaknesses:Weak rims (get strong double walled rims and you'll be cool)
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock , Magna pos
Bike Setup:bontrager rims , koolstop brakes , oury grips , bmx style seat post , shimano spd pedals , some down hill type chain , thick riser bar (bent the stock bar)
Bottom Line:Strong bike , served me well for a year 1/2 . I got new double wall rims cuz i kept on bending the stock set(best thing i ever did for the bike) . I ride pretty hard and I weigh 185 lbs . I used this bike nearly 3 days a week and abused it (it's not really made for a-frames and wheelie drops or jumping , but i did it) . It creaks and whines a bit in the drivetrain and bb , but that's expected when you take 4 foot drops alot . It's done it's job well , in fact , it's in the garage for whenever I might need a hardtail . Now I have a Haro x1 on the way to better suit my riding style . Seriously , if I spent another $200 on a new drive train and crankset/bottom bracket , I'd be golden , but I need a full squish bike for my aching bones . Buy this bike if you're 18 and like to do dumb things on bikes (me) , and then get a good set of rims . It'll give you enough time to save for a beginner type freeride bike . p.s. If I weigh 185 lbs and suck with body language , and ride super hard , and couldn't break this bike , how can you xc type guys break this bike? Seriously , you guys just want to whine and pretend you're roland green or something . Do us a favor , get off the trails and ride a roadie , jerks .

Strengths:Everything. Awesome brakes. The brakes love the water, in fact, they can practically swim. Oh, the suspension is awesome too, I never knew that a bike could be doubled for a pogo stick too.
Weaknesses:None. The baby blue color just adds to the package.
Bottom Line:You need this bike. It was recommended to me by a friend who knows what he's talking about. He watched mountain biking on TV when it was on the olympics. You know you can trust someone who does that. The bike practically floats you over the trail. The sound of the brakes after they get wet are a great way to train your dog to be obedient.

Strengths:Very strong frame. Good braking, no matter what any of the other reviews say. Fork isn't that bad.
Weaknesses:Tires need to be upgraded along with the components.
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the money. It should last any weekend worrior a few years. I reccommend it for anyone getting into the sport of mountain biking but it should not be used for downhill riding. Although the frame is good enough for downhill the shocks are not. I also reccommend upgrading to a racing seat. The stock seat is to big and bulky for any serious riding.

Strengths:Great frame, price, and looks. The grip-shift holds up very well under the worst conditions. I sometimes didn't shift when going uphill until I started going up the slopes and it holds up great. The suspension isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. It's heavy, but it works great. It doesn't just pop right up after it's been compressed but instead comes up slow enough to let you keep control, much like with higher end suspension forks.
Weaknesses:Although the frame is strong, it's pretty heavy. The breaks work great when they're dry but make too much noise when wet.
Similar Products Used:2003 Spesialized Hardrock (The specialized is more expensive and less of a mountain bike.)
Bike Setup:Stock. Added bar-ends, kore stem, wireless computer, and a better seat.
Bottom Line:Even for what this bike retails for it's a great buy. I advice anyone thinking of buying one to check Ebay though. You can get them brand new in the box from the website at a fraction of the price. The bike stands up very well against the competition in its price class. Have had no problems with it except for the squeky brakes. I think this bike AND ITS COMPONENTS will last me a few good years.

Bottom Line:This bike is NOT that bad at all. The bike does have bottom end components but performs much better than I expected. The people on here giving this bike poor reviews are most likely hardcore teen riders who are beating the piss out of it on a daily basis. If that were my intention I would have bought a $1000. bike not a $165. one! I did go over a few jumps that the local BMX teens have setup at the city park. It jumped them fine. The shock works fine, knobbies are nice, shifts fine & the seat is much better than expected. The bike works great for me and how I use it (bike path & trail riding). I DO recommend it, especially for what they are selling for now. I WOULDN'T recommend it for hardcore mountain biking (without some upgrades). I am VERY happy with mine!
