Favorite Trail:I have to pick just one?!
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Revolution Cycles - Georgetown
Strengths:Overall value for the money, and while I usually don't buy anything for color, the black and yellow one I got just looked cool. (It's cooler now with all my upgrades...)
Weaknesses:Yep, the seat and the cranks, both of which were replaced within six months. I also wasn't real impressed with the stock IRC's, which went after two weeks.
Similar Products Used:Nothing w/ suspsension - Miyata rigid (got rid of it when the fork snapped); Fat Chance wicked w/ straight forks (stolen - welcome to DC); Gary Fisher (can't remember the model name, but it was flat sand colored, and a hard tail - stolen, and my first 8-speed - i guess that wasn't too bad, though, because I hated the geometry); GT Outpost (I just liked the color, and it made a good messenger bike (also stolen)
Bike Setup:Mostly original componentry - I did upgrade the brake pads to the Deore XT's because I like the slide-out brake cartridges, and I use Ritchey Logic reds for pads), same wheelset (but I had the rear rebuilt after my fourth or fifth spoke busted, now it's fine - I'm only 150 lbs soaking wet), Michelin Wildgripper S tires (green) - but I just bought the Hutchinson Mosquito Golds, which I'm thinking about taking back for Pythons, Specialized Body Geometry saddle with Rock Shox seatpost, Specialized Strongarm II cranks (love 'em), Time ATAC Alum pedals, Onza bar ends (yellow - gotta match the bike), and a Janddt Mt. Expedition panier rack for my paniers (10,000 cu. in.), because I like camping along th C&O sometimes. NightRider lighting system.
Bottom Line:My first hardtail, and a pretty zippy ride on the trails. I bought it as a commuting bike, but have just recently gotten into singletrack riding, but it's a great bike I think. A little stiff, yes, but the Rock Shox post takes the bite out of that. I'm pretty much a roadie (up til now), and I like the responsiveness of the bike.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:Brampton Bike and Ski
Strengths:Great frame, value for entry level, bike is worthy of some upgrades
Weaknesses:Cranks flex way to much and need to be replaced if doing any serious biking. Heavy for a HT, but what can you expect in this price range. GT at Walmart now?
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Moab, Gary Fisher Sugar 4
Bike Setup:XT Cranks, Avid SD-5 brakes, Ritchey stem, SDG Satellite Seat, IRC Serac tires. The rest is stock.
Bottom Line:This is my first real mountain bike and it's a great bike to start and learn with. Got a great deal from Mike and have been hooked on riding off road ever since. The Rebound handles awesome and is very easy to control. Noticed a decent increase in performance when I replaced the cranks since the XT's are much lighter and stiffer than the STX's it came with. The only negatives are the weight and the beating you take with this frame. It's very stiff and puts power down when you need it, but man you feel every bump on the trail. This bike is worthy of upgrades, but don't get to carried away with them since the new full suspension models are putting hard tails to shame. Now I just need to wait til the wife gives me the green light to upgrade to my next dream bike.

Other than that it is a pretty good buy.
Bike Setup:all orginal except for lx crank and derailers, and WTB Speed V seat

Weaknesses:The seat and cranks

Bike Setup:Got rid of the factory seat, went to a gel seat. Bought a new Shimano Deore lx hollowtech crankset and front and rear derailleur. This made the bike handle and feel better. Got more power too. Finally went to clipless pedals and that has been fun trying to learn to use them.

I have started using it to race duel slalom and to ride North Shore style stunts and have never been let down. Get one of these if you still can. The fork is the best that I have ever had. Spend a little time working on it at first and it will totaly pay off. Change the fork to 100 mills of travel befor you even ride it and it is a magic carpet ride. Weaknesses:saddle, pedals, rims
Bike Setup:spd clipless pedals, titec stem, bontrager saddle, avid arch-rival 50, sun rhyno-lite rims
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for someone who is looking to get into mountain biking such as myself. I ride 55 miles commute each week plus 1-2 days of trail riding on the weekend and it has held up extremely well. The only complaint that I have is the rims have pulsed under hard braking after the first month of riding and I haven't been able to fix the problem. I've had the seam ground down by a shop and also had the rims retrued. It only seems to alleviate the problem for a week or so and then they are back to their annoying selves. Hopefully the new rims on order will make a world of difference. Other than that a solid bike that can take hits harder than I can dish.

Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Bicycle Outfitters
Strengths:The frame and Judy XC,s. This is worth the $550 I paid for it alone.
Weaknesses:All of the things you would expect to be weak when you spend under $600 for a MTB. The cranks, pedals, seat, seat post, straight bars, front and rear derailers.
Similar Products Used:Haro Vector V4
Bike Setup:Truvativ Firex SL Cranks, Time ATAC Alium pedals, Deore LX front and rear derailers, SDG Bel-air seat, Carbon post, Azonic Risers with OURY grips.
Bottom Line:Great frame and shock. If you want the bike to last and you get serious about riding you will want to upgrade many of the stock components as I did. The great thing is the frame and shock are worthy of upgrading. For another $300 or so you can make this bike very nice and enjoy it for several years. If you don't want to invest any more $$$ into it than my advice is sell it before you trash it. These were somewhat hard to find last year, especially here in the midwest and you should be able to get back a decent chunk of change from it to invest in a new bike with all of the bells and whistles.

Favorite Trail:the matildaville (long live technicals)
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Wash Bike Center
Strengths:The frame Is really sweet. great XC setup especially if you don't weigh much. Amazingly durable. Replaceable der. hanger. Good weight. Frame can take more abuse than any hardtail short of a Kona. good geometry. Nice lengths for technical and trick riding. good Judy XC altough it costs alot to change the amount of travel, it's a little soft. Great Jumper. Strong chainstays.
Weaknesses:cranks are soft and kinda weak. Soft crankset although I rip up components more than anyone I know, partially because I do a lot of riding in little bursts (standstill wheelies and standing wheelies, nose stoppies, ass-flops)
tires are really thin, I got lots of flats b/c they have no punture resistance. If you're gonna do anything other than XC replace bar stem. Grips neeb to be replaced immediatly. Rims kinda weak, not that bad though. Fork bottoms on big drops.Brakes Suck.
Similar Products Used:Schwinn sidewinder
Bike Setup:I have two setups:
XC: Time Atac Carbons, I can put on stock bar & stem and 1.95 stock tires. Although I hardly ride XC anymore.
Freeride/Urban: Azonic 1.5" worldforce Riser bar
Kore 40 degree 75 mm long stem
Sun Ringle ZuZu platform pedals
Maxxis 2.1 Mobsters
MAde a rockring by grinding all the teeth off the big ring
replaced chain
ODI lock on Yeti HArdcore grips
Magura Hydraulic QuickSilver HS-33's

Bottom Line:The frame is sweet especially for the price. I got it because I wanted a tough frame for cunstruction site riding. Not so great component batch. I know itseems like a Bitc...complained alot in the weakness section and changed alot but it didn't need anything for a while except the grips. The only reason I changed most of it was because I started riding different styles (freeride jumping urban)
Don't get me wrong the fork will bottom out if you land level or on the front unless you have mad shock absorbtion skills. But it's still great for it, the fork has NEVER given me any grief or needed any attention. If you do jump or dropoff I recommend wheelie drops. Frame is truly an amazing feat of engineering. If it had a reinforced headset are I would drop a Z.1 on it but it doesn't so Judy is stayin. Great entry level.light tail makes it easy to do nose wheelies and ass flops (going up on the front wheel and flopping it aroung so you're pointing a different direction.) A little rough riding down stairs though. Overall GREAT value and frame. 5 FLAMING MONKEY CRAPS

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Whitetail Bicycles--Morgantown, WV
Strengths:This bike has all of the performance you could ask for at a "typical consumer" price. Every component compliments the others. This bike is meant to ride hard and fast. It eats up downhills. I can bring it into the corners as deep as I can handle and the bike responds. The Judy XC is a masterpiece at this price. I've slammed this bike off of 4-5 foot jumps and the shock almost laughs. To get the quality of components this bike has from a maker like Cannondale or Gary Fisher, you would have to spend a great deal more. I will put this bike up against ANY in this price and performance range. LONG LIVE GT!!!!
Weaknesses:The only thing that let me down was the rims. This bike came with Weinmann Zac-19's. I ride hard. I need a rim that can handle it. These were unfortunately not in agreement with me. Upgrade the rims as soon as you can.
Similar Products Used:I am a faithful GT rider and owner.
Bike Setup:18 inch frame. Judy XC. Tioga Factory XC tires (excellent). Acera front and Deore rear derailers.
Bottom Line:I planned on spending $1000.00 on a bike. I have always ridden GT's. I wanted to shop around and see what else was out there. I really like the Big Sur from Gary Fisher. But after close inspection I realized that the components were almost identical. I almost paid $400 more for almost the same bike. My advice, check out a GT. They have the most aggressive frames out there. The rebound flat-out performs.

Strengths:The price, descent frame colors (As if this matters but there are alot of bike companies in this price range that have god-awful colors) The Judy XC shock, not much else!!!
Weaknesses:Everything but the frame, I bent the hell out of my rims within a few weeks of riding, the derailers are crap (front and rear) the sun tour cranks are horrible, the pro max brakes are great if your a 60 year old retired person riding through the park. Don't ride this seat if you ever plan on having kids,I was thoroughly disappointed in this purchase.

Bottom Line:I am not an agressive XC or downhill rider, but at this price range this bike should perform better than a bike from K-mart. I am sad I gave GT so much business throughout all my years of BMX bike purchases. It shows what good brand loyalty does for you. Buy this bike to ride to school and on flat groomed dirt roads. WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT BUY A BIKE FROM THE HIGHLAND CYCLERY IN SALT LAKE CITY, THEY WON'T STAND BEHIND THIS PRODUCT, OR OFFER ANY OUNCE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Bike Setup:WPD-800 clipless pedals, Shimano LX front and rear derailleurs, LX crankset.
Bottom Line:This is an update to a review I posted a few months ago (see below). Since then I've ridden the crap out of this bike. I can honestly say this bike helped me become a better off-road cyclist. It has been an extrememly durable frame for me and I have had no problems with it. The shocks are phenomenal. The bike is tough but maneuverable.
My only complaints are with the drivetrain and brakes. Over the last few months I have come to understand how entry level they are. Not that it's a big deal, I upraded the drive train to all LX for @$100 by buying used stuff off the internet. Brakes are next with Shimano LX v-brakes.
This bike will not be my last GT as I am already looking at their higher end bikes. It is, in my opinion, the best in it's class and price range. Buy it!

I would suggest asking the bike shop if they could upgrade the rear for you. Most places should do it for around $20. This bike has +400 miles on it and is doing pretty well.

The derauiller hanger has saved my frame and derauiller TWICE!! It is a very nice feature. The front shock is great and really makes for a smooth ride. Strengths:The RockShox Judys were just lovely. Even though the brakes are some weird brand (ProMax), they are good enough to almost throw me off the bike (on my old bike, I had to squeeze the hell out of the brakes to stop). The rear derailleur works very nicely. Finally, the blue-white-black paint jobs give the bike a mean look. Oh yeah, and the triple triangle thing kicks ass.
Weaknesses:The main weakness I have encountered so far is the Shimano Acera front derailleur. It has no problem going up, 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 work great. However, it needs a little coaxing to go from 3 to 2 and 2 to 1. I had tuned it, and it worked for a bit, but then it starts doing it again. There is also some sort of creaking sound coming from the front of the bike. One more thing... BE GONE WITH THE TOE CLIPS!
Bike Setup:stock...
Bottom Line:I am very pleased with my new ride. I got a somewhat good deal on this bike for $550, tax and all. I haven't had it too long and haven't hit the trails hard yet. But I will...

Like everyone else is saying, this is a wonderful piece of machinery for the buck. I am using it for trail riding and also to get to and fro campus. I know it will handle the to and fro school wonderfully. I am also pretty confident in it's trail abilities.

The strengths of this bike are mainly the RockShox and the overall economically-friendliness of the bike itself. The components are pretty good. If I can't get that front derailleur to behave, I might upgrade that in the future. But it isn't too much a problem because I don't do too much shifting on the front der. So, the weaknesses are minor.

GT has put out a good line of bikes this year. I test rode the models below and above this one, the Aggressor and the Backwoods. I liked them both, also. I felt the Rebound was a nice step up from the Aggressor. Unfortunately, the backwoods was a little too expensive for my blood. The Rebound was just right.

In conclusion... if you are looking for a ride that is wallet friendly, has an overall good set of parts (RockShox included), and is a great beginner-intermediate machine, the GT Rebound is a great choice.

NOTE: After I ride this bike for a while, I am going to do a follow up review. Right now, I am going to give it 5 snakes on fire for value and 5 frying fingers for overall rating. This is because I can't wait to ride it again.

Have fun riding, but don't kill

The road tests proved this to be the hottest setup for my dollar and I like it more every trail I slam down.
A good climber and awsome on downhills. The shock does the job and I havent bottomed it yet. Cranks can be improved and derailer is still a value I had'nt expected. Braking is positive and frame reacts well to all 175lbs of me, even in awkward trail positions (if you know what I mean). It is getting more punishment than I thought it would and still wants more. Ride test a few and make the GT your last. I have a notion it will sell you too. Happy Trails !

Strengths:Solid frame, Front shock Judy XC, reasonable components given the cost. Can take abuse, I rode down a flight of stairs w/o any problem. Excellent hill climbing ability.
Weaknesses:Pedals take a bit getting use to.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6000 '99, GT Backwoods '99, Marin Nail Trail
Bike Setup:Added bar ends. Stock otherwise
Bottom Line:The bike is an Excellent value at $500. A good choice for a person that is just starting out or getting back into the sport.

Credit the Judy XC for distinguishing it from other bikes sold at this price range.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Great fork for the price of the bike. Pretty light, Nice ride, etc
Weaknesses:The pedals could be better I'm considering upgrading to power straps or clipless
Similar Products Used:Looked at trek 600
Bike Setup:Stock so far
Bottom Line:This is a great bike. Right now there is no other bike on the market with a judy under 600 $. I am a kid and this is my first MTB. I love the sport already and this is a great bike for my first one. A lot of people say that the seat is to hard but i think its fine. The only real problems are the pedals (you will fall if not used them before) but other wise I think that this bike is great for someone new to the sport of just wanting a great bike with out spending there whole walet.

Cool tires
Good rims
Strong frame
Weaknesses:Crappy Suntor cranks
Similar Products Used:Trek 6000, Raleigh M80, Schwinn Moab 3
Bike Setup:Stock, except changed to Deore LX Cranks
Bottom Line:This bike is awesome, except for the cranks. But this is no reason not to buy this bike. I got my cranks for 20 on sale. Now maybe the Deore rear derailleurs aren't the greatest, but I have experienced no problems...yet. But if something happens I'll just upgrade them. The seat is okay for me, but that's probably because my last seat was really bad. Now, compared to my old bike ('93 Schwinn High Plains) this bike is heaven. If you want a good bike for a fairly cheap price, buy this bike. It's great!!!!!!!

Strengths:The most bang for your buck...period! Solid frame. Good components. Not too heavy. Great shock. Excellent tire/rim combo.
Weaknesses:Stock pedals. Rear derailleur is a bit weak.
Similar Products Used:Checked out the Schwinn Moab & Rocket, various Treks (6000, 6500, 7000) and some Cannondales
Bike Setup:Bontrager clipless pedals. The rest of the bike is stock.
Bottom Line:Hands down the best bike for the money on the market today. It's comparably light (for a 20" frame), has good components and the black paint job gives it a sleek look. So many bikes feel like they're about to fall apart when you get going at a good clip. But this bike is fast, built like a rock and comfortable to ride. The real derailleur needed some tuning after a few rides but that was it. If you're looking for a great competitive bike for race or recreation that won't drain you bank account...this is the one. Race? That's right, I said race. I raced this bike last weekend and outperformed 20 other guys on full-suspension rides. Goes to show you don't have to spend $2,500 on a bike to be considered a "serious" mountain biker. My girlfriend (a pretentious LiteSpeed owner..just kidding) got on my case because she thought I was buying a crappy bike since it cost under $1,000. Nonsense I said, GT does not manufacture crap. I used to race a GT back in my BMX days, I ride one now and I will definitely buy another when I ride my Rebound into the ground...in 20 years or so.

Strengths:all you get for the money.
Weaknesses:seat, pedals.
Bike Setup:stock, except pedals (yanked off and replaced them with a big toothed BMX set), and put a riser bar on.
Bottom Line:Love this bike it is the third GT I have owned. This bike has all the great GT qualities: good geometry, strength, and it looks good. I think this bike is ideal for anyone who does serious riding but does not have the money for a race bike. The only downside is the seat. It is very uncomfortable, and took me hours of adjusting to get it set just perfect. Also the pedals could be better (the toe clips are scary).

Strengths:The price for this bike because of the Judy XC, great fork. This bike is really working out to be a great buy, the componenets are holding up to some real punishment.
Weaknesses:Toe clips are not the best. They need to be a stronger plastic, or just make them clipless
Similar Products Used:Trek 6000, Gary Fisher, Specialized
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I priced and rode bikes for several months trying to decide what to buy. The price of this bike with a Judy XC fork on it male it a great buy. Other bikes in the same price range did not come with an oil dampered fork. The bikes that did have the same fork as the rebound were priced much higher. If you want a good strong bike that will not have a high price, this is what you need.

I spend most of my time on paved bike trails,
the front shocks make the ride very smooth, and the
24 speeds make hills a breeze.

Similar Products Used:2000 Schwinn Moab 3, 1998 Schwinn Moab 3, 2000 Trek 6000
Bike Setup:Stock with Rockwerks clipless pedals
Bottom Line:So far this bike has proven itself to be well worth the money. It by no means is a racer, mainly due to its weight, however, is an able performer in everything an average weekend warrior will put it through. My Rebound has already seen some very technical trails, and it has seemed to handle them with the poise of a more expensive rig. The 7005 aluminum "triple-triangle" frame seems to have a nice mix between climbing well, and feeling balanced during descents. I researched bikes for a while before settling on the Rebound, and this bike gave the most bang-for-the-buck. This years Judy XC is a great improvement on this bike over the years past (Rebounds formerly has Jetts), and was one of the Rebound's biggest selling points. I could not find any new rigs in the St. Louis area outfitted with a Judy (or comparable Manitou) for less than $650. Although some of the components on this bike were slightly down graded from the other bikes in its class, I have experienced no major problems with any of them. The brakes, produced by Promax, actually have out performed the Avids on a Trek I test rode. I am not sure long term how they will hold up, but with the money you save on the Rebound you can justify the upgrade. The Deore rear derailuer seems a bit choppy under load sometimes, but still has given me no problems. If you want to upgrade though, most bike shops I asked were willing to upgrade this to an LX or an XT for a little bit more, even up to 6 months after you buy the bike. Bottom line. . . this bike is a great value for the cost-concerned average rider. If you are looking for a race machine, then you had better have a fatter wallet. If you are looking for a great bike to trail ride on, then the GT Rebound is right on the mark.

Favorite Trail:to be determined
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Light-weight, sturdy, manueverable frame; great shocks (Judy XC, 80mm travel); good components(Acera front Derailluer, Deore rear). Tough rims (Weinmann ZAC-19)for a 200+/- pound guy!
Weaknesses:Saddle (SDG) is hard, cranks could be better(Suntour MD 300), price(@$600, paying for the name)
Similar Products Used:Diamondback Outlook, test-drove the 2000 Iguana SE and 2000 Hardrock A1 Comp FS
Bike Setup:stock with Wellgo WPD-800 clipless pedals
Bottom Line:I like this bike A LOT so far. I'm not at all disappointed. It handles well and has proven to be sturdy. The shocks and rims take a beating and take it well since I'm @195 pounds. The competition had lower priced bikes with comparable equipment but I like the semi-rigid triple-triangle design. I shopped a long time and thought this one out and I believe I got the best bike in it's class. This is a great bike for the once-a-week rider like me or someone relatively new to trailriding who wants a reliable ride. Actually, 4 1/2 flamin' chilis for this bike.
