Great starter bike for novices like me. Perfect bike for the around town ride, an evening family jaunt, or a weekend on the trail. At less than $300, hard to find a better bike.
Weaknesses:
Steel construction makes it a little heavy and makes the climbs slightly challenging. Shifting is smooth on flat land and on the descent, but is clumsy on the climb.

Great weekend bike for the occassional "mountain biking". Perfect for a quality around town ride. I have no complaints with this bike and I am impressed and pleased with the feel and comfort. I will quite possibly stick with GT because of this bike.
The only thing I am changing now, besides adding seat bag water bottles and such, is a new saddle and bar ends. Climbing steep hills is rough without the bar ends. I also plan to add peddals.
Bottom Line: Buy the bike for $275 and add about $75 and you have a great bike for the newbie at $350.

It's not a great climbing bike but the standard front shock helps the first timer get into the downhilling without tearing up the upper body. I bought this bike based on the reviews below, and don't regret it. It's a great first mountain bike, but it will definitely whet your appitite for something a bit lighter with a better shock and higher quality components. Well the mountain bike thing has been a real learning experience for me! I learned by making every mistake I could--buying crappy bike from WalMart and not knowing anything. I am 250 lbs. and I ride like a maniac! Don't let the 250 fool you, it aint fat. I had to convince my wife to spend more money on a bike and that wasn't too easy, I coughed up an extra $100 after taking back WalMart crap and I ended up with a damm good bike for the money. I have only crashed it once but I should have taco rat dogged the rims but they were fine. I wish they had better forks on them though. I have smashed down the springs so not too much travel left in them. Will have to spend about $20 for replacement springs so It's not a big deal. I have put over 500 miles on it so far between paved paths and lots of very hiiy state park trails. It's been very good to me. I would love to up grade to better fork and rims, maybe next year. If you are lookinf for a good first bike and don't have a lot of money--it's a good investment.

The Saddleback is a great recreational ride. While being smooth the bike also handles eficiently without guesswork. I have the 20 frame and find that for us tall guys it works far better than the average Crack&fails (Cannondales) for its price. The groupe-set is average so are the threaded front shocks, yet for the price tag you will get far more bang for the buck. However, I have found that goimg up in price unless you are interesred in an Avalanche, GT as a whole oversells in comparison to Gary Fisher, Specialized, and far too numerous other manufacturers to name. I guess that reverts us back too the old rule of Ride Before you BUY!!! On the while a great value so I'll use the scale as intended and rate this bike at four and a half chillis.
