Favorite Trail:Saratoga Gap
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Can't remember.
Strengths:Solid frame. Came with a Judy XC fork. The frame and fork are the only good stock parts. The rest of the bike was really bad! FYI- every component has been replaced.
Weaknesses:Non-replaceable derailleur hangar, poor quality components and NO REAR DISK TABS! The components were very low-quality. I have replaced them all!
Similar Products Used:Can't remember, bought this in 1999. Some low-end Jamis' and Specialized Rockhoppers.
Bike Setup:XT cranks, XT rear D, LX front D, Rockshox Recon 351 Solo Air fork, SunRace Singletrack Rims, Panaracer Fire XC tires, LX rapid fire shifters, Brake Therapy for rear disk, Avid Juicy 5's, Sette Ti skewers (why not!), terribly heavy stem and riser bars (will be replacing with some carbon bars and a Salsa stem soon). I have put way too much money into this old girl, but I have a bond with it, you know? I have done some gnarly crashing and wicked bombing on this Rebound.
Bottom Line:You will never find this bike new, but if it's used and in good shape, why not? If you're looking for a bike to get you out on the trails and have some fun while not spending too much money, this is the bike for you. This is a solid, heavy frame. It was built to be burly and it still is, almost 9 years later. All my buddy's ride with full-sup rigs and I've hung in there and haven't broken the frame yet. This frame takes a beating and keeps on rolling. I have had some gnarly crashes on it: trees at speed, 15 foot cliffs into the river, 3 foot drops into endless rock gardens etc... etc... You can't buy this bike anymore, but if you can find one cheap and want a solid frame, this is a tough bike and worth shredding some trails with. I just rebuilt the whole bike to get me though this and possibly another season. It runs like a champ. Before I brought it back from the dead, it was my college bike used as transportation from school and/or the bars and back. I just wish I my Yeti 575 now instead of waiting at least another complete season...

Strengths:dude, youd have to run over this bike with a car to fuk it up. the frame the frame the frame.
Weaknesses:THE FORK...let me just say that if i was given enough time/room id write a book on how bad this for sucks and why. Take this fork and tie it to two mules and pull it apart...then bury it. most of the components are crap and need upgrading. not the greatest hill climber but not really meant for that ...i dont think.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Stupjump Pro...Klein Attitude.
Bike Setup:currently just some Shim. LX components and some new carbon handlebars i got a deal on...oh and new Mavic wheels soon...and a fukin new fork too!! currently have the RS Jett c P.O.S fork with the origional Avid brakes which are fine. oh yea unless u just ride st. the Acera components HAVE to go. origional wheels too which arent very sturdy for me personally.
Bottom Line:this frame rocks, bottom line. i give it everything ive got, although im only 145#s. this bike was mildly thrashed when i got it and since then ive put some major scars on it and the paint barely even chips. I changed some of the components because the origionals wont stand up (i only used LX because the bike was pretty used by the time i was ready to upgrade - why put XTR on a well thrashed frame?). Once this frame has some nice XT or XTR components that are more durable and lightweight you will see such a major difference. God i hate this fukin fork! the old co's like Haro, GT, and Diamondback and a few others that were known for BMX bikes STILL make great bikes and this GT proves it. Corners like a panther, unlike some other high profile racing bikes. my buddy gets me on the hills when i ride this thing but i take him in the corners every time! well worth it if youve found one. Gets 4 hot ones for the frame alone...would be 5 with better components.

Date Reviewed: June 29, 2001
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Eddie's Bike Shop
Strengths:Tough GT Frame, nice rapid fire shifters for the money, saddle (hard but it leaves plenty of leg movement and fits your body right), nice length stem, V-brakes (like 'em better than more expensive V-brakes)
Weaknesses:Rear free body hub, bottom bracket, derailers, Jett C shock is too heavy, pedals are junk
Similar Products Used:Lots, Me and my friends are always swapping bikes while out on the trails or just for a quick cruise in town.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock at the moment... Replaced rear free body hub with LX and bottom bracket with upgrade after breaking both. Looking to upgrade the shock to a Bomber. Light aluminum freestyle pedals for in town riding (nice with any foot wear), clipless for trail... broke the stock ones quick
Bottom Line:This bike total rocks if you want the coolest looking not to mention strong and light wt. hardtail frame for the money. Most of the componets are crap and will brake with heavy use... no biggie though, just upgrage as they fall apart. Happens even with higher end componets too. For $500 it's the perfect starter mountain bike or a great platform to build an entry racer.

Purchased At:Wheels Bike Shop
Strengths:The frame is simply amazing! It is built like a tank. Brakes, shifters, and seat equipment are also very good.
Weaknesses:Shox were good at first, but need to be upgraded. Everything else is tough as nails.
Similar Products Used:Trek, Schwinn
Bike Setup:Factory, except new Specialized seat, Judy C Shox.
Bottom Line:This bike does not get any better for the price. Every aspect of the bike is simply amazing, it rides distance smooth, it rides rugged trails with ease, and it will be there with you until the end. Let me tell you that after getting cut off by a car at 40 mph downhill, rolling over the trunk, dropping the bike, and rolling away unharmed with me bike suffering only a loose chain is tank-like construction. The bike and I did more damage to the car than it did to us, and i thank GT everyday for making the Rebound the best quality bike they could.

Strengths:Great price for starving student. Im a big fat guy and this bike dosn't flex under me when I put some stank on it. You can bury it in the mud and she'll ride fine.
Weaknesses:takes a while to get used to the seat, seat tends to loosen up from the post.

Strengths:FRAME! DURABILITY!
Weaknesses:Fork, components (depending on riding level).
Similar Products Used:Specialized, Rocky Mtn
Bike Setup:Replaced Jett w/ Marzocchi Z.4 Air, XT except for brakes.
Bottom Line:This is a follow up to a review I submitted shortly after I purchased this bike a little two years ago. I've put well over 2 grand mi on the bike. My real reason for writing is I took the bike on a trip to Killington mountain this summer and beat the living sh*t out of it. Three full consecutive days of rocks, mud, trees. It rained for a day and half of riding and the only thing I did (besides a tune) was new brake pads. I couldn't believe the how well this thing held up. It was unreal. You couldn't tell the color of the bike it was so covered. 30 degree rocky gravel inclines at 25 miles an hour, and the wheels maybe heavy, but they held up fine. Not a necessary upgrade. This proved to be a great purchase. Wouldn't have done it different. (btw, if you plan on doing any mix between cross country/dh like Killington, put your fork at a medium preload. Plenty of times my wheel hit a hole and I endoed because the preload was too little. Kind of sunk right underneath me). Anyway, if you want a relatively light frame, easily upgraded, and durable as anything I've ever seen, this is a great bike for you.

Strengths:This baby has a nice strong frame.Everyone thinks the triple triangular frame suck, but I love um. The color, tires are good, brakes work good, seat doesn`t pick my butt anymore. The crank is not bad but will eventualy be replaced
Weaknesses:From what I have heard, the rims bend. I am only 14 and weigh 135, it hasn`t been a problem. Acera suck unless you are a street rider.Change both deraielrs with XT, that is what I am going to do. Change Jett C at all cost!! A judy race or XT(99 or 00)would be an awsome upgrade for this bike

Bike Setup:factory...except Titec stem, gt riser bars, shimano clippless pedals.....will make many more changes as money comes in.
Bottom Line:This is an awsome bike for the price. When i got this, I had many extra`s included in the deal, which equaled to be about $200. I paid aboout $225 for the bike itself. It is totaly upgradable and is a nice ride before upgrades. It is a GT. They did slack off on a components...could be an awsome bike for a few more dollars. Overall this bike will suit almost anybody that doesn`t ride professionaly. Buy it if you have a chance.

Weaknesses:Rims, I've trued 'em and warped them in the same day.. I only weight 140 too... The shock is a bit stiff, and not very ajustable.

Strengths:I've got the 1998 model. Everything stock lasts at least a year for moderate riding. 28 lbs., for $450.00, Shimano, Avid, Rock Shox, Reynolds Cro-Mo frame. GT, GT, GT, GT, GT
Weaknesses:Rear Hub bearings wear out in wet sandy conditions, causing annoying elusive rubbing noise. Thats about it, replace the hub and get on with it. Acera is junk stuff.
Similar Products Used:Huffy 1996 Rigid heavy piece of crud, luckily it got stolen, had excuse to buy new Rebound.
Bike Setup:Now after 2 and 1/2 years, I have replaced major parts with Shimano LX and Avid speed dial mag brakes. Frame a good platform to upgrade with parts as they wear out. The next upgrade: Manitou 99 SX-Ti with TPC, definetly better than stock Indy S.
Bottom Line:Buy it if you are like me, Huffy kid wanting a bike to start racing with after you have learned the ropes and upgraded. If you are already a racer in intermediate race classes, pass this one by, but still go GT. Maybe an Avalanche or Zaskar. IT IS A GT!!!!!!

Strengths:Great starter bike. This is my first mountainbike and Ilove it.Good and decent commponets on the bike. But as you get more into the thrill of mountainbiking your going to want to do some upgrades: Like crank, levers, pedals, and front and rear derailers. But that is dependant on how serious you are gong to be about mountain biking.
Weaknesses:Cheap pedals and the Alivo rear derailer sucks. The Jett C fork would be O.K. if you only lived in the city and didn`t do much hard trail riding. But if you are into serious trail rides and down hill fun, do your arms and hands a favor and get new front shocks with at least 80mm of travel. But don't do anything stupid like buy shocks that are werth more than the bike itself.I recomend the 2000 RockShox Judies.Because you can ajust them between 63mm to 100mm of travel. And I seriosly sugjest that you buy a new rear derailer.Look in Mountain bike mags and try to find 98 and 99 stuff thats on clearance.Because there still good products just a year or two old.

Similar Products Used:Treks, Scwhinns, Cannondales
Bike Setup:Stock '99 Rebound
Bottom Line:Well, when i first got this bike, i really wasn't into biking that much. In fact, i got it to replace my old cro-mo rigid bike that got hit by a car (with me on it). A friend took me to some real mountain biking, and I was rapidly sucked in by the sport. Now, I work in a bike shop, ride during virtually all of my free daylight time, am training for racing, and am saving for a new bike.

The Rebound is most definitely a great bike if you're just getting into the sport, don't want to spend too much money, or simply don't ride that much. At first, I loved the bike. Now that I'm way deep into mtb, I'm beginning to feel the need for an upgrade.

And now on to the problems. First, the Jett C sucks bigtime. It works on elastomers, not coils, so it really isn't plush at all. Also, it only get 50 mm of travel, which is really not enough. Luckily, for 2000 GT put a Judy XC up front, which I know from personal experience, is WAY nicer. The Judy has coils, travel from 60-100 mm, and is a million times plusher.

Second, the componentry is fine until you do any hard riding or if you use the bike alot, as in several hours per week. I'm really having performance problems, and its NOT because things need to be adjusted. Like I said, I work in a shop, so I know how to do all the work on it. The bike comes with toeclips and straps, and I'm really wishing I had clipless pedals.

Third is the weight factor. It weighs in at 30 pounds, maybe a little over, which i'm starting to feel is too much. It's way lighter than my old steel bike, but still...

All this is not to say that it's a bad bike. The Rebound is a great bike, unless you plan on doing really serious mountain biking.

For value, I give it a 5, because for the money (especially for year 2000), its a super deal. Overall, 3 toasting weenies.

Fantastic frame, goes just where you point it and keeps the rear wheel firmly in the muck, solid build; can really hammer it into the ground and it won,t give up. climbs well, good weight distribution throughout frame, noticable when cornering and going DH. Can ride all day. GT really knows how to design a frame.
Weaknesses:
Bargain end of front suspension rides so some components leave you wanting. Forks, for example; pre 1999 models had RST elastomers good budget fork but very poor for the kind of bike GT were putting them on. too soggy on travel and useless at very high speed over harsh terrain. Ok on cornering, though; never lost the front wheel in high speed turns and trail twisting. saddle abominable, good steel frame but slightly heavy as a total weight. Change a few components and you have a real getgo vehicle for the money. 1999 models benefit from the change to Rock Shox and better gearing components from Shimano.
Similar Products Used:
various Trek and Gary fisher models (pre-1998)
Bike Setup:
Chopped bars, tioga ends, standard gear system, N.S.K. racing saddle, alloy seat post, toe straps, veloceraptor front and rear on standard rims.
Bottom Line:If you haven't got much money and you want a well engineered front suspension machine for your wad you could do a lot worse than go for the rebound. Components can always be upgraded and the frame is just fantastic. The more abuse you subject it to, the better it performs. GT have created one of the best frames on the market with the triple triangle design, and its a winner in my book. If I went back to hardtail from my full suspension rig, I would definitely go for a GT frame. The rebound gives you an excellent base to develop a good bike. I rode mine for just over three years and sold it for just under $400 to help finance my current rig, and the only regret I have is selling it. Need I say more...

Nice frame, nice everything. I haven't bought the bike yet but I am buying it tomorrow. I will fill you guys in on how it holds up.
Weaknesses:
I heard the components and fork on it are cheap, but I am light so I hope I don't get any problems. Also, the seat REALLY hurts your butt. I am definately going to get a new seat.

I've been riding on the road a lot and I just got the 25 Mt Biking Trials of the Hudson Valley book and have done 4 of the trails so far and the bike is great. If you are planning on racing and stuff, this isn't for you. But for $500, a casual rider like myself can't go wrong.5 Peppers.

VALUE,GREAT BIKE FOR THE BUCKS. (
Has as good a feel as some of the more expensive machines I tested. SOLID upgradeable frame... I weigh in at around 210 lbs.-6 ft. And I've rode the dog sh** out of this bike. It has handled great so far. Hey, when I tear something up I'll upgrade!
Weaknesses:
Not at all impressed with the rock shock Jett. Lose the pedal clips.

Bottom Line:The Rebound is a nice bike but it seemed a little
heavy and didn't feel quite as tight as other bikes I and my friends have ridden. It retails for $515.00 at our local bike shop, but for the money I would go for the Raleigh M80 or the Haro
Escape A7.2. All the bike pro's I talked to said that you pay more for the GT namebrand and they are heavier than their counterparts, even a guy who sold GT concurred. It is a nice bike but be sure to look around for best value and the best bike for your riding needs before splurging on popular names. If you love the Rebound I'd try picking it up for $450 you probably can, and at that price it is much more attractive.

First off, i am only 14 and I do some basic hometown races,i used to ride a royce union until my frame snapped. (Never buy a royce union, theyre ****.)This bike is great. I have had it for 5 months and I have put 300 miles on it and it never gave me any problems. I upgraded the shifters to LX(rear) and XTR (front). I also put a LX crank on it. I would reccomend doing all of the things i did to it and you will have the bike forever.

It's got a light, nice frame, but if your like me and you want a bike that can put up with you you wanna upgrade. If you like Shimano, go LX components or higher, and maybe get a new fork. On a technical ability from 1-5, it goes all the way. I like it the way I have it, it's a preety sweet riding bike that I'd recommend if you love to ride. 4our chillies!!

Bottom Line:

I think the GT Rebound is a great bike for the money. The components aren't thrilling, neither is the fork relatively, anyway. I mean you could get worse. The aluminum frame is nice, and it is highly upgradeable. That is good. I like the replacable hanger too. Replacing that is bettering than bending your frame back and forth to or three times until it snaps and you need a new frame. Overall, a great bike for the money. Five flamin' chilis.

Well, good bike for the bucks, huh? But if you have enough money, I strongly
recommend you to buy a better one. Shifting has been terrible after riding at
Moab once, deraileur hanger is so fragile that I've had to replace it twice
($18 each), cranks got totally messed up from too high bunny-hopping, wheels
are limp and the fork (indy c) is a mush. But, you know, it could have been
perfect if you ride XC. Not for a freestyle rider. Definitely.

After a few months of (extensive)researching for a mountain bike with the best bang for the buck, I chose the GT Rebound. (The 99 Raliegh M80 was my second choice). So far I have not been disapointed with its performance. I believe this is a great bike for those who are just starting out and cannot justify(to the wife)spending over a grand. A Solid frame and reliable compenents (if it breaks, then upgrade) make this bike a good value.
I give it five stars
