Date Reviewed: August 6, 2009
Favorite Trail:Riverside State Park
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:I'm 210 lbs and I bought this bike mainly to handle a beating - and it has. It's a zippy ride too.
Weaknesses:Bars were too narrow and flat and stem was too long. I managed to bend the bottom bracket, but I blame myself for a very hard landing. The components were fine for a while, but when I got tired of the maintenance I just converted it to a single speed.
Bike Setup:Yeti downhill bars with Felt stem. Converted to single-speed. Still have original rims, brakes, levers, and Rock Shock.
Bottom Line:After converting it over to a single speed I found it to be far a more enjoyable ride. Less maintenance, plus I like a quiet bike. All that metal slapping around gets on my nerves. I can keep up fine with my friends riding 24-speed bikes on the local trails. It's simply a matter of adapting. I grew up riding BMX bikes anyway!

Strengths:Very reliable for 12 years. Ball Burnished finish is awesome. A little aluminum polish every couple years to restore it to a mirror finish. Light enough to ride it like a BMX bike.
Weaknesses:Frame developed cracks in the steering head. GT warranties it for the original owner so they are giving me a big discount on a new bike. Brakes are weak, this is one model year prior to V-brakes. Front fork was Chro-Mo, they expect you to update to a shock on a bike this good, but I prefer smooth trails and the lighter weight without a shock.
Bike Setup:I added a softer seat and 50mm rise handlebar for comfort.
Bottom Line:Almost zero maintenance for 12 years Still has the original tires! I've patched and replaced tubes. COST OF OWNERSHIP WAS about $50 A YEAR!!!!

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Great frame - light, strong and climbs well. I packed it in nothing but bubble wrap and put it on an 18hr flight with me with no problems.
Weaknesses:Components that came with bike could use some upgrading. Had to replace my rear shifter and derailleur after two years.
Bike Setup:WTB Momentum headset and stem, Syncros riserbar, Rockshox Hydracoil, Shimano Deore V-brake M510 and shifters, Tioga Factory XC tires, Shimano PD515 pedals, Suntour crank, Weinmann rims.
Bottom Line:This bike has held up great over the years. I have not made any changes to the setup so for the price I think it was a great deal. Apart from having to replace a shifter and the derailleur, I really have no complaints. It tackles climbs and downhills equally well and its frame is well worth the price. It's a pity it's not made any longer even though GT is back in business. I recommend it for the beginner biker.

Bike Setup:GT backwwods frame, Rock Shock Mag 20 fork, MAvic wheels w/ Specialized enduro tires, WTB stealth seat, 1 in. riser bars w/ Yeti grips, Shimano shifters and cantis style brakes

Favorite Trail:Where the 4 winds may take me
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Westchester Pro Bike Shop, BX, NY
Strengths:The GT Backwoods frame is bomb proof! Decent weight, Triple triangle design is unbelievably stiff, Tracks better than yo' mama's Volvo! Best bang for the buck, period. Frame is identical to a ’97 GT Avalanche. You just get lower quality parts on a Backwoods.
Weaknesses:Parts! I paid $650USD when I purchased my 18inch, ‘97 GT backwoods as a complete bike. The components were tolerable at that time, but it benefited greatly by upgrading all of the original components.
Similar Products Used:Best friends 18”, '97 GT Aggressor, triple triangle Chromo frame (Convinced me to buy my Backwoods) His aggressor was the mother of all Chromo frames. He weighed 270lbs around that that time. He rode his bike for a living as a bike courier in NYC for many years without failure. Then we would leave the city with our 50lbs+ backpacks for a weekend of camping and trail riding. If that doesn't help you make a decision...Then head to your local Wal-Mart and buy yourself a Huffy. Then go ride off of a cliff buddy! J/k
Bike Setup:Upgraded to RST Mozo fork, XT bottom bracket, XT rapid fire shifters /w Levers, XT cassette, XT front and rear derailleur, XT V-brakes, Suntour (Now gone *sad face*) Cranks, Suntour chain rings, GT hubs (Awesome hubs IMO), Rhinolite rims w/ DT spokes, Titec Hellbent handlebar, ODI Grips, Nashbar (Yes, Nashbar! most of their products are worth your $$) Seat post, and lots of other goodies.
Bottom Line:The Backwoods is an underrated frame. Some of the reviews I read here are worthy of reading, while others were just pure hogwash. I like this frame so much that I just bought another 18inch Backwoods frame that I found on E-bay (2000 model year /w disc brake hanger) for $100USD. My advice to anyone who’s a beginner or a Pro rider is that the Backwoods is a force to contend with when it comes to budget, reliability, strength, and great looks. It was a hit when it hit the market and is still a hit today. It was born to be a great bike, and it is. Once you install some good quality parts and your own assorted flavor of other goodies, you will have yourself a great bike. Whoever purchases this ride will not be disappointed. Enjoy the great outdoors while at the same time enjoying a great looking and performing bike. It’s a bike frame that will last you for many years to come. So whatcha waitin’ for? See ya at the next trail head. Happy trails!

Strengths:Stiff, responsive frame. Light.
Weaknesses:Kore Lite handlebars were too narrow. Wheelset.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Rangitoto, Norco Kokanee, Specialized Hardrock, GT Zaskar, Specialized Enduro, etc.
Bike Setup:Switched out the fork to a Judy XC 00, LX rear Dllr., Sun CR18 rims, riser bars, Bontager Tires. A strictly no nonsense setup.
Bottom Line:A couple of years ago I was in the market for a decent XC bike that woudn't break and wouldn't weigh more than a friggen cinder block. That was all I wanted. I Have to tell you folks that over the past couple of years I've been pleasantly surprised.

This bike is worth picking up primarily because of one reason: the frame. It's bombproof, climbs like a rocket and it's light. It's stiff and it's well worth upgrading. If you were into it, you could race this frame, no problem.

A couple of things though. GT is bankrupt now, and the "Backwoods" label is now defunct. So if you happen to find one used you might take a look at it. But don't expect a "lifetime frame warranty". Also ditch the Jett fork and wheelset as soon as you can. I don't think you need to put a SID on it or anything but the frame justifies a better setup.

A very good, solid bombproof rig.

Strengths:16" frame good for dirt jumps... I can put the seat down real low. Frame is tough as I've cased many a landing with this purple turd and it's still holding out... and i'm 200 lbs. This is a good frame to take your aggression out on, as long as you are ready to pay for the upgrades.
Weaknesses:Crappy components. By the time you upgrade this thing to something that can take a beating, you could have bought the Ruckus, which can't take a beating either. Zak rims are junk, LX cranks are crap. Jett shock is a joke.
Similar Products Used:nothing... this is my first mt bike
Bike Setup:'99 Backwoods, Jett XC, Truvativ DH ISIS cranks, Truvativ Sealex DH BB, Zak/Bontrager RIms, Specialized DH riser bar, Dimension 100mm highrise stem, Wellgo Spikey peddles, Avid brakes, STXrc 8spd shifter.
Bottom Line:This bike is good for what it says... the Back woods. I give high value cuz it is a good bike for the average person, but if you ride hard, this bike will literally fall apart at the seams.

Weaknesses:fork is soft and short, bottoms out too easy. low end components, but very easily upgradable
Similar Products Used:Univega FS, Schwinn Model, Giany, Diamondback
Bike Setup:currently set up with Manitou Xvert Super(100mm), XT components all around, Kore stem and Kore riser back. Nashbar seat.
Bottom Line:Great serious beginner bike. Wonderful bang for the buck yet very easily upgradable. The frame is very strong except for the paint. I chipped mine the first time I rode it, but that's my fault. Strong drivetrain, despite the low end. My bike was well setup and very well tuned. Had no problems from day one, unless I created them. =) bike is an awesome Freeride bike when equipt with the right stuff, yet still climbs decent. I think this is a great bike the the guy/gal that is looking for a good starter bike, low price, yet easily and in expensively upgradable. A good starting place to build your own bike.

Favorite Trail:lake lewisville trails
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Phat Tire (out of business now)
Strengths:Frame, frame, frame.
Weaknesses:stock comps are a bit weak, I have the 98 and seriously need to upgrade the rear derailer. Stock pedals gum up too frequently. The 'grass' paint chips too eaisly. 2.5 years of moderate abuse and it's about time to find someone to repaint it. Front break (great otherwise) clogs up when riding in soil with a high clay content--but who's don't? (disc break seriously needed up front).
Similar Products Used:DiamondBack, GF, Bontrager Privateer (so I could have a bike with my name on it...)
Bike Setup:Jett XC, Salsa risers - looks just like the picture above...
Bottom Line:For the price it's a sweet ride. Does well in mud and on soft dirt. Not much for mountains in North Texas but around the lakes you can get nice and muddy. Does well across fields and eats dry creeks up in the summer. This year's been very wet so I've had a ton of fun keeping it in the mud.

Strengths:BULLET PROOF FRAME! the frame is incredibly strong. i have the '97 version and have done enough to test this frame. but if you want to step it up a notch, upgrade is definitly in the future
Weaknesses:nothing really, the components need to be upgraded. the stx derailleur system has worked great for a long time. but i would agree jumping up to the XT. doesnt come with the best handle bars either. kore lite bar can be upgraded. needs better crank and rims if to make lighter
Bottom Line:GREAT BIKE. Solid frame and light for the components used. sweet design for the frame. GT has done the right thing for a inexpensive bike. Heard the '01 is coming with something sweet. look for a backwoods if trying to deside on one!

Strengths:Frame geometry, tyres, brakes.
Weaknesses:Paint, mixed components (front derailleur, front hub, stem, handlebar, crankset, drivetrain, chain), weight.
Similar Products Used:Diamondback Apex, Trek 930, GT Timberline,...
Bike Setup:STX-rc hubs, shifters, crankset, drivetrain, SACHS chain, Deore LX derailleurs.
Bottom Line:I bought this bike after riding a Diamondback Apex (great bike) because I wanted an aluminum-frame bike. It`s frame is strong and solid although the paint (my is solar grass) easy scratches off. I wasn`t satisfied with the mixed components especially the drivetrain was poor. I replaced it with my old STX-rc drivetrain and it is good so far. The Shimano Ig chain is a piece of crap (SACHS chains are much better).

My bike cost a lot because I didn`t get it with a front suspension like other reviewers here. So I will have to think about buying a front shock (probably Marzzochi).

I`m satisfied with the frame (probably the main reason I`ve purchased this bike). Good things here are WTB tyres and Avid brakes (smooth and effective). I believe that with some new components this bike can be well upgradable.

I ask some GT 1999 Backwoods owners if they have any information about this frame weight and aluminum composition ? I tried to gather this information by official GT website, but no answer so far ! Thanks !!!

Bottom Line:This bike is great to begin your mountainbiking life with. It can be upgraded to fit your level of progression. Besides the minor things that one will no doubt experience with a bike in this price range, I can find no faults with the Backwoods. It is lightweight and sturdy, what the hell else do you need? Overall stock bike gets four hotpoops, the way I have my bike set up gets a five for personal reasons.

Strengths:Light, strong frame, easy to adjust and work on. Good geometry and overall feeling of control. Brakes are very nice.
Weaknesses:Uncomfortable seat, back tire (velociraptor) clogs up too readily with mud. Bent the mavic rear rim the third time I rode it. Titec enduro handlebar creaked like crazy! Replaced it with an Easton 5 degree CT2 carbon fiber. Rear deralliuer gets out of alignment easily.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper FS, GT Avalanche, Diamondback Topanga, some Raliegh FS bike.
Bike Setup:Stock except for Easton 5 degree CT2 handlebar
Bottom Line:For my first serious mountainbike, I am really happy. It can take some abuse but the drivetrain seems to be the weakest part. The rest of the bike feels solid. I got the 99 when the 2000's came out and they gave me a nice discount. I've heard the bike is readily upgradeable so any problems can be fixed. A great bike to build on as you get more serious!

Strengths:Solid Frame, GT Beefyness, massive tubes, cool look GT patented Triple Trangle Technology
Weaknesses:As you get more serious about biking (as I did) and ride it hard then you'll find mechs are below par, I rode it hard, the only problem was the chainrings kept bending, and in the end the bolts on the lower chainring snapped one by one so now I've got an LX chainset (much more reliable)
Similar Products Used:Specialised Rockhopper

New XT rear mech
SRAM Di.R.T top of the range front mech,
all the original bars, shifters and levers
Bottom Line:I was gonna buy a '98 backwoods as the 99 was just coming out but everwhere sold them like hotcakes so I managed to barter my way into 10% off a just released 99 model, now the 99 model is heavily reduced and still readily available. I chose GT cos I've always liked them, they're big'n'beefy and have loadsa street cred. Get last years model ('99) to save loadsa money (just under half off release price, well, in the UK anyway).
A perfect bike for beginners solid and will survive anything, I would recommend the frame to absolutely anyone, even top DH/slalom riders. But when you decide to upgrade big time, such as discs which I'm currently trying to do then you'll need a different frame. Highly recommended, GO BUY ONE!

I just wish that all those big bike manufactuerers would put a little more effort into decking out the bike. I have no problem paying an extra $50 on the price of the bike and get a decent crankset, as opposed to spending $80 on upgrading the part and getting stuck with the old one. That sort of practice really pisses me off.

Bottom Line:*this is a '98 not a '99*
Paid $500 for it in Sept '98, compared to all the Cannondales and Specialized bikes I had tried out, it beat them in both ride and price. I had put about 800 miles on this bike (combination of commuting to work and rough weekend rides) when it developed a creaking sound around the bottom bracket. Up till then, the bike was awesome with nothing but regular maintenance. Bike shop striped it and found the noise was in the frame, not bottom bracket. GT rep came in and took a look at it and in a little over a month, the frame was replaced free of charge w/ a black Zaskar LE. Haven't found much difference in the ride of the Backwoods compared to the Zaskar except it seems a little lighter and stiffer under power. Would have been happy with a replacement backwoods frame, but I'm not complaining. Excellent entry/intermediate bike. high performance potential w/ upgraded parts.

Pretty light-weight
A lot of fun to ride!
Weaknesses:
Man, this puppy just looks too good! Worried it might get stolen, I've had two bikes stolen already. I'll be damned before they take this one! So I got two locks. The brakes gave me some trouble, the rear one locked up going up a curb and the front brake pad slightly rubs against the wheel. Should get it altered. Nothing major though. And the SDG COMP seat is too hard. Get something plusher.
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Standard setup- Rock Shoxs Jett XC
Bottom Line:This Bike is great for the recreational mountain biker. I originally went out looking for just a commuter bike for school, you know, nothing too fancy like a GT Palomar or Outpost but when I saw the Backwoods, BAM! I just decided to go for it. Haven't regretted it yet. Not only do I just use it to commute to school, but also for a lot of fun (which wasn't orginally in the plan). What a good bike should do, you should just be able to look at it, and want to ride off to some place remote. It's my first mountain bike and I'm really happy with it. If god rode a mountain bike, he'd ride a Backwoods...no wait, he'd probably go for the Zaskar LE or maybe even a dual suspension bike, I don't know. well, if he were on a budget though, then he'd go for the Backwoods. This Bike rocks! I really don't miss driving my car when I'm on it, then again, maybe I need a new car too.:) GO GET THIS BIKE!

The Rock Shox Jett XC does its job well and the purple color is a real eye catcher. The first thing to lose is the stock pedals...If you take the toe straps off the pedals are completely unbalanced. I went with the Shimano M545's from Pricepoint (Got 'em for $55!) The Onza ProCut bar ends it came with are definitely more attractive than the $10 cheapies you see on everybody elses bikesThe only real bad point for me has been the derailleurs...I took it out riding on an overgrown trail and got a few sticks jammed in them and next thing ya know...you only have half your gears.(Although this was easily fixed)Overall...I give this bike 5 flaming dead horses for being a strong, decently equipped ride.

I explained to my girlfriend that man does not by live by color alone and that if the bike didn't measure up I wouldn't buy it for her. Well, much to my surprise I was VERY impressed. The TIG welds were excellent and there was very heavy gusseting around the head tube area. Components were a mix of Shimano Alivio/Acera/STX-RC, Avid, Onza. The bike actually had some upgrades when compared to the manufacturer's spec's. The shifters were STX-RC instead of Alivio and the rear rim was a Mavic 217 instead of a Weinnman...what a deal!!! I liked the bike alot as an entry level ride so I bought it for her. The one thing I will change ASAP though is the cheezy Alivio crankset. For that reason I give it 4 chilies.

I rode Road bikes for years, Coors Tour and others, 5 years ago had a back injury and got into Mountain bikes for therapy and weight reduction. I had an old Schwinn 9.6 which suffices for my commuter bike now. I purchased a Backwoods last year and I am really hacked that this years model has better components at a cheaper price. I rode the new model and was impressed with the upgrades. I would say that the Shimano A crankset is crap! LX or better please. The brakes are flawless, I like them better than the XT's, less hassels to be tuned. The Velociraptor tires are Ok, better ones are available. I put a 2 inch downhill riser bar on mine to ease the pressure on my back. The rapid fire shifters are much nicer than the Gripshifters I was used to. I would rate this a fine beginners bike and great for the weekend warrior. The frame is quite stiff, quite fast, and takes abuse well. I plan on replacing the crankset, and possibly going to the 9X2 Ritchey or 10X2 Shimano gearing. hey for Under a grand I can ride and replace several components to my taste rather than spending $2,000 on a higher priced bike and feeling bad that it sits and I don't have time to ride it.
