This bike is total rubbish. I had one for four months then i got my money back due to my returning the bike for repairs to the shop constantly. After coming back from trail riding it would take me an hour just to fix the bike back up to a rideable state. This bike is only suitable for road use or very light trail work or for a garden decoration.

This bike has been going on strong for 2 years now. My friends have more expensive bikes, but somehow, where their's have failed, mine keeps going. I use my bike for a bit of everything. I commute to work, go on cross country cycle holidays and hit the downhills on weekends. With almost 4000 kms on my computer, all I've had to replace is one set of brake pads and and a bald tyre. I have had no componentry upgrades, and was considering buying a new bike. Having read all the amazing reviews here, I think I might just get an upgrade. This bike has been very good to me and I'm going to hold on to it for a few more years!

Components I must say, have held together quite well. Suntour crank/??? BB have given me 0 problems, and haven't missed a shift with front or rear as well. Like I said, everything works fine, my only gripe is that to upgrade crank I need to upgrade BB, cassette, F/R derailers, shifters, brake levers, hubs (might as well upgrade whole wheel). All for a $99 crank (Supergo). Oh well, have had WAY too much fun on it to give it less than 5 stars.
PS, if you know the Millenium trail at Blue, you know what this bike can do!!

The bike is tough too as proven by my buddy performing a nasty "Over The Bar" crash with my brand new Aggressor. I picked up the bike without a cratch leaving him with injuries all over. The front portion of the bike is slightly heavy and upgrading is imminent. I started with the stem and bar taking off a bit of weight and will probably be upgrading the fork soon. For the ay I ride and the way he rides,,,NO DIFFERENCE!! The comfort is the same, the shifting basically the same he ...Don;t get me wrong, there is a huge difference if I rode the agressor to my zasker but HE WOULD SEE NO DIFFERENCE , Its all about the rider and hpw they ride, nothing looks more ridiculas then a newbie on a 3000 bike, you look great in the parking lot but you look like a fool on the trail. DON"T GET CAUGHT UP IN ALL THE HYPE! ride to your level, 95% of bikers would not or could not ride the way you would have to to tell a difference. If I see you a newbie on an agressor with a camelback, computer and new seat i repspect that, and commend you, but get out of town with a newbie on a zaskar! If you were to add $600 in upgrades, you would have a $1500 bike. If you are a beginner, this is the bike you want. If you are a serious weekend rider that likes challenging terrain, this is the bike you want.....with a few upgrades. If you are a 24+7, extreme off-road cyclist.....get a life. GREAT FOR THE PRICE ITS A LOT OF BIKE WITH A COUPLE OF UP GRADES.
Weaknesses:
RIMS AND HUBS ARE A LITTLE CHEAP FOR A 290 LBS 6'4' PERSON!
Bike Setup:
REPLACED THE RIMS AND HUBS WITH SUN-MAMOTHS RIMS AND LX HUBS. REPLACED THE BRAKES WITH SOME XTR 951S AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE.
Bottom Line:
GREAT BIKE TILL ITS TIME TO MOVE UP TO THE ZASCAR. REMEMBER YOU CAN TAKE YOUR UP-GRADES WITH YOU TO YOUR NEXT BIKE, SO FOR $360 AND A COUPLE OF UPGRADES ITS AWESOME! NEXT TIME I RECOMEND GETTING THE ZASCAR FRAME FROM A CATALOG FOR $400 AND SINCE YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO UP GRADE JUST BUY ALL THE LX AND XTR COMPONETS FROM THE DIRT CHEAP CATALOGS!

Best bike for the buck!
Weaknesses:
I've already replaced the shifters, brake pads, and will be changing out the suntour shock when I can afford another. I have also been experiencing noise in the bottom bracket area, I am told that GT will probably replace the frame to eliminate the noise situation. Along with this new gearing will be added later too.

A great starter, or intermediate rider, handling is smooth, most of the components are not too bad. With the exception of the front shock, this is one fine bike, I will own it for some time.

Strengths:
1) Great frame - high end GT aluminum frame design on an economically priced bike 2) Good price 3) Good ride with great feel and control. 4) Never had a problem with the rear derailleur even in the muddiest of conditions.
Weaknesses:
1) SR Suntour MG 80 Front Shock should be replaced if you plan to do any muddy trails with leaf matter, stalks, or twigs. Due to the low arch between the shock tubes, the front tire/wheel will lock up as it collects mud and junk and you'll spend more time cleaning out the gunk than riding. 2) Doesn't have a replaceable derailleur hanger. 3) Replace the Acera X front derailleur with a higher quality derailleur. 4) Get a different seat. 5) Replace the threaded headset when you get a new shock to a threadless headset.

Bottom Line:
Great price for an entry level rider. Awesome GT Frame. Awesome WTB Velociraptor 2.1 tires. Crisp Shifting from the rear derailleur. A great bike to learn on that can be upgraded over time with better components. Upgrade the shock, headset, seat and front derailleur when you get the time and money. Bottom line, even if you don't upgrade the bike, it's still a good ride. Just be careful of the weaknesses I listed above.

This bike isjust plain fun to ride. For the price, it cannot be beat. No one seems to like the suspension, but I rode for seven years with no suspension whatsoever. So it's all gravy at this point. It was close between this and the Fischer Tassajara, especially with the superior components of the latter. But truth be told, the Agressor shifted a lot more smoothly and was a much more comfortable ride (ignoring the saddle). And I find that superior bikes are for inferior riders, especially at this price range. Austin has some pretty tough rides and this GT handles like a champ. Don't fool yourself into thinking you require more bike than this, unless you are a pro and/or have money to burn. But I do suggest investing in a new saddle.

Overall, this is an excellent bike for a beginning rider or an intermediate rider with a small budget. The core bike is solid and parts are easy to upgrade. Get different pedals asap, the stock one aren't for toe clips. I'm thinking of going clipless. The Suntour shock is decent for this price, but I'll upgrade that someday as well. I ride a 20 frame and I thought this bike was lighter than most in that size. Gradually upgrading components will shave off some weight. Overall, and excellent value - highly recommended!

This is an awesome bike for the buck. The wheels and fork hold up really well especially considering I ride it hard off road and jump a lot on road. The fork is very good for this price, but not the best. The only major downside is the threaded headset. The headset made hard to get a new stem, because the stock stem is a bit too long for my type of riding. I plan to upgrade the stem and headset to threadless so I can get the Marzocchi z-3 LT I'm saving for. Overall this is an excellent bike and if it wasn't for the threaded headset I would give it 5 burning thingies.

I used to ride quads and race them occasionally, so I know what performance is about, plus past biking exp... as a kid tells me that this Co. knew what they were doing when they put this one together. The welds on the frame are beefy enough to handle some pretty rough trails. The stock tires Velociraptors handle alot of the trail conditions that I have riden on in the past week ( 50 plus miles ) Braking is acceptable for most conditions, and overall ergonometry of the bike is great. I hope this helps anyone looking for a new MB or an upgrade.

The Suntour front shock really sucks, and this bike is a bit heavy(well, okay really heavy) for an aluminum bike, but for its price I shouldn't complain too much. I wouldn't recommend it for any hardcore riding, (i.e. racing, downhill) but it's not a bad bike to just ride around casually. Perhaps a good beginner's bike.

I bought this bike around X-mas '98. I love it! For less than $400, it's really awesome. The alluminum frame rocks, and I love the big beautiful welds on it, too! The SR Suntour MG80 suspension fork could be better, but the magnesium lowers and the weight makes it quite acceptable. The only problem is with most GT bikes under $900--The components are downgraded to fit in a suspension fork for a still low price. Oh well.

Bottom Line:
I bought this bike about a week ago and have ridden it all but one day, all on the street, however. I have done some curb jumping, and cross field riding, and as soon as I feel comfortable with the bike (and my rusty skills), I'll take it offroad, but don't anticipate any problems. The bike is a little heavy for an aluminum frame, and the shock probably isn't the best, but I can hang it easy after riding, and, other than the seat, which I replaced, it is a very comfortable ride. My previous MB experience is a rigid dept. store bike about 7 years ago, and this thing runs all kinds of circles around that one. Did I mention I bought it used (1999) for $270, from a bike shop where the guy had riden it maybe 5 miles and maybe once offroad? The brakes are great, the shifting is precise, though noisy (perhaps that's normal) and the only somewhat negative thing I've noticed is that I have a harder time controlling the bike with only one hand than on any other bike (1 rigid MB, and half a dozen 10 speed road bikes in the 70's and 80's) I've owned. Perhaps this is just me, my inexperience, or even the shock, and it hasn't been fatal yet, nor do I expect it to be!I'm giving it 4 stars due to the weight, the shock, the seat (I know the less comfort, supposedly the better the bike, but this seat was the worst of any bike I tried), and the fact that brand new, full price, there might be some better bikes for just $35-50 more (Raliegh specifically comes to mind). However, at the price I paid for little wear, it is a 5 banger all the way. If it isn't already obvious, please take this review with the weight it deserves given my inexperience and lack of offroad riding.
