Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Cycle Center
Strengths:Price - Quality.
You have a good frame + idrive system.
Weaknesses:Basic components.
Basic Fork - SR somthing....
Cranck - Suntour crank
Gear - As basic as you can find
Similar Products Used:Hard tail bikes.
Bike Setup:Well, I've changed :
1. Rock Shox Duck SL. ( U-Turn + Lock ).
2. Truvative Iso crank set. ( + BB ).
3. Avid S. Digit 7 Set.
4. Wheels: Mavic 211 set + LX.
5. Derailleour: LX.
6. Seat: WTB Laser V Ti.
7. Next time: Shifters: Sram X0 or XTR.
Bottom Line:I think that the bike frame is good deal for the price you pay.
The basic setup is good as long as you know that you'll
need to replace during the first 3,000KM.
I was more then happy to change parts every few months.
No, the bike setup is good and reliable.
I will continue to replace parts as needed.
I will try to change to better parts - XTR or Sram.
Next time, I hope to replace the Shifters to Sram X0
or XTR.
The iDrive system is very good and reliable.
So, in general terms, the bike have good frame to upgrade.
The good news is that you don't need to invest any more
money. You can start riding the bike and replace parts
as needed.

Date Reviewed: June 7, 2003
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Bought bike as birthday present for little brother. 1500 road miles, half as many in grueling desert mountains, and a few job free months later I watched my brother in a state of joy usually reserved for illicit activities. I am still impressed with the durability of the paint as well as the overall design. Very much designed for all around recreational hooliganism forgoing extensive climbing.
Weaknesses:RST must stand for Risky Situation Tomes. Much thanks to GT for the Judy XC. In general the Suntour parts have froze up or broken after innumerable amounts of undue stress. The Alivio components as well as the rest are not meant for the abuse inflicted by any amount of juvenile behavior needed to properly enjoy the limits of the fork and shock travel.
Bike Setup:Judy XC/rest is stock
Bottom Line:My brother has a full time mechanic(me)to correct mechanical failures resultant of urban and off road fun. Suspension so good you don't even notice that it isn't liscensed to every bike comany without an R&D department. Almost seems to be the steel of yesteryear with a frame so solid it will last for years.

Price Paid: $300.00

Strengths:Great Frame. The rear suspension is very good. The i-drive system helps when your off road.
Weaknesses:The forks are rubbish. They leaked and came apart the first time I went for a ride. The forks are so hard and stiff they are a pain to adjust to a sorter mode.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Soft
Bottom Line:A great bike. Just get some new forks that work. It is grat off road. I also like the fat tyres they make it look more off an off road bike.

You should buy it if you are intrested in off roading. I would not sugest it for tarmac road use only.

Price Paid: $520.00
Purchased At:From a co-worker (originally bought from Supergo)
Strengths:Ya gotta love that iDrive! Frame is a good foundation for upgrades.
Weaknesses:Cheap components! Could stand to go on a diet.
Similar Products Used:Yeah right.
Bike Setup:Only the frame is original: Full XT, Marzocchi MXComp w/ ETA, Fox Vanilla, Bontrager Racelite, Race Face, Rhyno Lites, etc
Bottom Line:This was my first attempt back into the dirt since I was a kid and I am most pleased. I couldn't pass up the opportunity when my boss told me he was selling his near new GT. All my buddies gave me a hard time about riding a couch until they saw me go past them with little or no bob. Now they all have sold their hardtails and have joined the 21st century on FS/soft-tail bikes. I was a little concerned by some of the reviewer's problems with the frames cracking and the trials of trying to get warranty service. I guess I've been lucky (knock on wood) no problems to date. Of course, I've replaced most of the problem bits.
If you're looking for a great place to start, this is they way to go. It is a little heavy, but just think of how great your legs will look!

5 little value chilis for being a cheap way to get started
and 4 overall for the terrible components.

Strengths:I drive is just so cool. One hell of a tough frame. my personal opinion is that the components are pretty good considering da price i paid. Rides really good.
Weaknesses:People say that the wheels are crap but i wouldny know coz mine already came with Mavic D521 on. Pedals if your riding cross country and you slip the pedals will just crucify you as they have spikey metal bit on em.
Similar Products Used:Saracen Mission £850 Not half as good as my i drive.
Bike Setup:DMR V8 pedals, Mavic d521 rims with deore LX hubs. Club roost red handlebars and grips. Apart from that it much the same as it came out da box.
Bottom Line:If you can buy this bike and your into cross country you must must must get it. Coz its the best bike in da whole world. It has all da facilities to upgrade with disc brake mounts etc. The i drive is really good and works really well. Ive been ridin da bike for just under a month nowand am really pleased with it. Favorite Trail:Nant Yr Arian, Summit Cycles Trail
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $952.00
Purchased At:Sapphire Cycles, Newtown, Wales
Strengths:Looks good, the i-drive works well, reducing the amount of effect the rear suspension has on the pedaling of the bike, can be used for almost anything; XC, Freeride, dual, a bit of Downhill and for day riding, cheap to buy.
Weaknesses:Many pivots and complicated bearings can be difficult to service and maintain, not as good a choice of componentry as other bikes at this price. Cannot bottom bracket mount a chain device because of the idrive, (the chain device hits the frame when suspension is compressed.)
Similar Products Used:2001 Scott G-Zero FX 4, 2001 Scott G-Zero FX 3.
Bike Setup:Psylo XC's, Deore Hydraulic discs f&r, Mavic 317 rims on deore disc hubs, RST 22 shock, Tioga Seat, KF downhill riser handlebars, avid rollamagig, DDG Chain device (Changing to a DMR chain guide), Deore mech, Alivio chainset otherwise, Alivio cranks, DMR V8 grase port pedals, Tioga Factory DH 2.1 front tyre.
Bottom Line:I have changed this bike a lot to suit my needs, overall spending a further £900 / $1429 on the bike bringing the total spending to £1500 / $2382!! I feel tht I have now developed the bike into a more full on Freeride, Dual Slalom bike. It has served me well and I never had any regrets buying it. It has 4.6 inches rear travel and 5 inches front travel, which is more than enough for most people. A great buy.

I am selling this bike now for around £600 / $950, which is a truly amazing price considering the upgrades and amount of extra cash I have spent on the bike.

Strengths:Gotta love the I-Drive. Frame can take a beating!!!!
Weaknesses:The components were trash but that was expected.

Bottom Line:GT belly up, bad for them, good for me! I replaced everything on the bike except for the frame. Duke XC forks, AD-5 frame shock, Full XTR 8sp set-up(After many weeks of E-Bay hunting, paid out the butt for it, and no i didnt want 9 speed), Gippemme wheel set (not real lite but drop em off a bridge and they will still be tru), Velicoraptor 2.1 F/R, Bontrager racelite bar/stem/post, Egg Beaters(Freakin awsome).
The whole set-up is about 26lbs but who cares, if your bike seems to heavy maybe you need to lose some weight. The I-drive system is great now that all that crap is off of it.

Strengths:Value. For $400, I couldn't go wrong with the Idrive. A lot of people say that the Idrive is the strength of this bike, but I can't really say if it is since I haven't tried other full suspension bikes to compare.
Weaknesses:Weight. The more I compare my bike to others, the more I think about how much more weight I am riding with than them. I would say components but for an entry level bike, the components are decent. I also had trouble with my rear wheel being bent pretty bad, but the lbs was able to straighten it out for me to be at least rideable.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Avid brakes, Marz Z3 Bomber, SDG Saddle, Wellgo pedals, everything else is stock
Bottom Line:The most trouble I have with the bike is that it feels tall and big. I am 6'1" and have a Large frame but it feels as if the bike is a lot taller for my size (maybe they sent me the wrong size). I've also had to experiment with the stem length and height to where I feel most comfortable with the bike. This bike was worth the money since it was bought when GT was having their closeout. If you can get this under $500 then I would say it's a great investment, if you plan on spending more than $500, I would consider bikes with better components and a lighter frame.

Bike Setup:02 Psylo SL; Ryno-Lite XT wheelset; Hayes mech.discs; 2.10 IRC Mythos tires; Azonic ORC short stem and Azonic riser bars.
Bottom Line:I love this bike. I have been an occasional rider for several years but this bike made me an enthusiast. I started with an inexpensive 6.0 , learned to ride a little bit, then slowly made it a nice rig as I progressed. This was definitely the way to go although if I could have held out a few mos. Strengths:I speak only for the frame. Tough ass frame! I've smashed the thing on rails and not a dent. Soaks up big hits very well (5ft+). Love the I-Drive no problems. Good ride all around feel safe on the DH. Don't mind the uphill comments you hear about, it's the components that make it suck uphill. I climb up hill without a problem since I got new components.
Weaknesses:Components are total crap. If you ride any style tougher than sidewalks with occasional sticks, your going to be due for a component make over. Expect to put about 400.00 worth of used parts into it. Rims are not tough, you will have to change the rear rim, or true it everyday. Stock panaracer tires suck. Gears try to destroy you with their worth crap strength. Brakes are fine but will rub against total waste of metal rear rim. Don't get me wrong it will last you for a about 2 months. Pedals suprisingly seem to last though it scares me to have plastic. The front/rear shocks I feel are worth what I paid for the bike no disappointment their. The bike is heavy, but I like the beef for taking the hits. GT OUT OF BUSINESS, DAMN!
Bike Setup:Had Acera components changed over to SRAM 9.0 and Avid Mechanicals. Also changed for junk rim with a WTB type.
Bottom Line:Get this bike! and put the extra investment into it. You'll have lots of fun with it. I give it 5 chilis because for the money you pay, it makes up for the components. For something I paid 600.00 for two years ago, is making me very happy this year for only another 400.00.
The bottom line...
" I HAVE FUN WITH THIS BIKE! "

Strengths:I think the heavier 6.0 frame is stronger than the 1.0 - 5.0 frames. Also, I'm 6'4" & 220 Lbs, so the XL frame fits quite well. I-Drive is the best. Much better than Schwinn Rocket or Specialized FSR.
Weaknesses:Cheap ass components. In 5 months of daily use I've busted the rear axle/freewheel, and bent the seatpost. The Suntour crank small ring is worthless too. I have to reshape the teeth every week to prevent chain suck. Surprisingly, the Suntour fork and RST rear shock are holding up great after rebuilding them.

Strengths:The i-drive is nice. I like the gear ratios. good for hill climbing. it is nice that it have the mounts for disk breakes.
Weaknesses:the front shocks need upgrading. the back axil is week I broke it in the first month

Favorite Trail:Rocky Point, Suffolk County, LI, NY
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Sunrise Cyclery, Massapequa Park, NY
Strengths:Idrive is excellent (If you don't know what this does, it is a unit in the bottom bracket [where the pedals attach] that counteracts the action of the rear suspension to lessen torque loss of pedaling, a common problem in full suspension bikes), price/quality
Weaknesses:Lesser quality parts, need to upgrade bike as you upgrade riding style
Similar Products Used:96 Raleigh M50 (hardtail), 97 Gary Fisher Kaitai (hardtail)
Bike Setup:SR Suntour fork, Shimano Acera shifting, Tektro V-brakes, RST 22 rear suspension, Y2k rims, Kenda tires, Topeak rear rack
Bottom Line:Please disregard low ratings or exaggerated weaknesses listed by other reviewers. Compare the price and you'll be hard put to find a full suspension bike in this range. Unless of course, you choose this one. It is a well set up beginner to intermediate bike, rideable off the showroom floor, so to speak. It takes upgrades well, as it is a good design. The key is, start cheap, and upgrade as you go along. With smart choices, this 'cheap' bike can be outfitted with better equipment for thousands less than the better models. Also, if you wonder why you don't get top of the line stuff when you pay $600 or less, stop and think about that for a sec. Then reintroduce yourself to reality. Want top end? Max out your credit card on a special built race or downhill model costing 5 grand and up. Then review THAT bike. I'm happy with this one til I outgrow it.

Favorite Trail:Sheffield's roads and offroad tracks.
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Halfords, Sheffield
Strengths:Great frame, i-Drive really works better than any other full suspension I can think of.
Weaknesses:Heavy and cheap components, can't wait to upgrade to better drivetrain and shock units
Similar Products Used:GT Avalanche 1.0, Saracen Havoc..
Bike Setup:Stock, except for new tyres Panaracer Fire XC Pro (Kevlar)
Bottom Line:I really bought this bike with the intention to upgrade in the not too distant future because the wheels are not great.
Most of the other parts will be replaced as and when I have the money for it. It really needs a much better (longer travel) front suspension fork, like the Marzocchi Bomber's
The frame itself will stand up to most types of riding I do.

Strengths:Awesome frame, nice seat, sharp looking, i-Drive.
Weaknesses:You have to hold the front derailleur shifter to shift from 1 to 2, could have come with a nicer fork.
Similar Products Used:Oryx, Trek, Norco.
Bottom Line:A sweet ride for such a cheap price. I can't wait to modify it to my liking. Great investment for someone looking for a begginers bike. It gets me anywhere from the local bike store to the top of Whistler or Grouse mountain.

Purchased At:$700
Strengths:Light, Quiet! (scares people on the trail when you pass them), i-drive system works well
Weaknesses:Cheap wheels, broke rear axel after a few months. Heavy tires, ceara shifters very hard to setup properly and need constant attention to keep that way.
Bike Setup:stock (sr suntour fork, kenda tires, joytech hubs, shimano cera shifters, etc.)
Bottom Line:It's a good place to start if you want to upgrade, I plan to replace the fork with a rockshock judy and get disk wheels. I liked the price I payed for it, it was worth it. If you plan to ride it as it is, take it easy so you don't break anything.

Seat is comfy, stock GT branded stem, seatpost, bars are all pretty nice.
Its a GT
Weaknesses:Stock components, rims stink - bent one on my second ride with it, kenda tires are heavy, acera derailleur - cant be tuned properly, suntour crank - weak junk, suntour FREEWHEEL - 13-30 weak, heavy shifts like crap.
HEAVY - 32lb
Similar Products Used:Marin b-17, Trek Y
Bike Setup:LX derailleurs, LX Hollowtech Crank, XT BB, LX Cassette, Rhyno-Lites, blah, blah, blah
Bottom Line:An excellent buy if you plan to upgrade. You will need to replace most of the drivetrain quickly, but for the price you get and Idrive frame thats rideable as you ugrade. I love it to death...
Mine is now kitted out like a 3.0 (almost) for only about and extra $700. Hmmm a 3.0 for $1300...
