Strengths:Pedals great. Very confident ride. I really like the way the bike responds to drops, corners and rocky terrain. You can even adjust the wheel-base of the bike easily which allows you to have greater stability at for those high speed courses or adjust it to a smaller wheel-base for those tight corner twisty courses.
Weaknesses:Chain gets stuck sometimes. i-drive loosens up and makes a clicking sound
Similar Products Used:tried many other DH bikes at local races
Bike Setup:Stock 2001 setup minus the azonic loveseat and Gazzaloddi tires
Bottom Line:Buy the bike. I am known for destroying what I ride and this bike will take a beating like no other. Great for all types of riders. Pedals better than ANY other DH bike. The greatest feature this bike has is its versitillity.

Strengths:i think this frame is crazy...really strong, a lil heavy, but the strength makes up for it. the i-drive i think is amazing, there is such a big difference in peddling around in the mountains.also the fork is great, very strong, not too heavy (boxxer team)
Weaknesses:umm...none other then when i was being stupid, and showing off, and i tried a front wheel manual, pulled it too far over, and landed on the derailluer hanger which is anodized aluminum and just snapped right off...since the company went under and straight to pacific, i still have not recieved the part, only set back is the service, because there really is no more GT...*tear*
Similar Products Used:...a wal-mart bike..mongoose xc-100!! i got it for 100 bucks i think. i just bought a new iron horse sgs team tho, looking forward to that =)
Bike Setup:all stock except for the gear shifter, switched to a sram, and the grips which are snafu ultra tacky, and changed the intense tire to a maxxis mobster..thats it
Bottom Line:its an awsome bike...the crap ive put it through should have destroyed it by now..but it keeps on peddling. it would be the perfect bike only if the company was still alive, then it would be easier to get parts. but its still well worth it to search for the part and to keep this beautiful bike.

Bottom Line:well it's been a year and the bikes still in 1 piece.

just a quick note to say that when i striped the bike i messured the amount of travel it is not 9 inchs more like 71/2 - 8 inches @ the most. I was slightly anyonyed about this discovery @ 1st but i realised that it don't mater how much travel the bike physically has it's what it rides like. which is perfect as many of the riders below me have testified. i have riden quite a few true nich bikes and to be honest most of them felt a bit wallowing and slow. if u can find 1, new or second hand, buy it u won't reget it. i

Bottom Line:I had the chance to try my friend's DHI. I was thinking about making one dh track and then go back on my 2001 stab primo. Finally, I rode the GT all day because I had never felt so comfortable on a bike. I exchanged the bike again for a 2002 bb7, and I disliked it so I asked for the gt again. I was riding faster then usual, releasing the brakes earlier in curves and I was jumping over roots and rocks most of the time. I was getting a better line (...higher in the curve and off the brakes) then what I usually do. Even better, I wasn't pushing, I was relaxed. After that we went for steep, difficult drops wuthout any trouble handling it. The bb is a bit low so I would put a small mrp rather than the big one to clear beneath and it would be a perfect dh bike. I had a great time riding it!

Strengths:bullet proof monster T and fox vanilla RC. pedals like an xc bike and sucks up the biggest drops. ride urban at the WSU pullman campus. tioga wheels indestructible
Weaknesses:Stock tires sucked. metal bead actually pulled through the casing and xc tubes were too lite. front end is heavy with the monster T but thats the trade off for a bullet proof fork

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:ebay (brand new)
Strengths:Built like a tank. Kicks serious arse on any drop you throw at it. Bike feels brand new after other guy's bikes fall apart. Excellent component spec. Best buy on the web if you can get one. Monster T fork!
Weaknesses:A tad on the heavy side, which is fine for freeride or DH. (You want the weight in those cases). Pedaling around with XC friends gives me more of a workout than they get but can be done. Stock tires are too skinny for anything bug XC
Similar Products Used:Specialized Big Hit
Bike Setup:Intense 2.7 tires, Azonic Luv Seat, 36T front cog for woods.
Bottom Line:
Fantastic bike for 2000! The fork alone is worth a grand. The nine inches of plush travel in rear makes you want to do things you probably shouldn't do. Bike is ROCK solid compared with other free-ride only type bikes. Can be DH'ed with better tires right out of the box. I-Drive works great, hope I never break it cuz I don't know what's up with the warranty situation, but most people I know who have a history w/ GT's say they don't break. After what I've been doing on this bike, I believe it.

I have an IMPORTANT QUESTION that I was hoping somebody could respond to. I would very much like to try to mount a 24" Rear wheel on this bike for the type of riding I do, but have no idea what would happen to the handling, ground clearance, pedaling action, etc. If I went in this direction. Have any of you chongos' ever tried this? Heard of anyone else trying it? I know it's not designed for it per say, but if it is possible to do so without bottoming it out on the ground every time I take drops, I might want to consider it. Many thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

Purchased At:Polo Velo
Strengths:Monster T (for freeriding)
Fox shock
suspension performance and balance
easy to steer and land
flat pedals
Weaknesses:the frame doesn't accept big enough tires, ripped open the rear tire on my first ride, xc tubes, syncros handlebar, broke the swingarm in two places at once and I don't know who's going to take responibility because I baught the bike from NORCO (they were the canadian distributor for GT) so I might end up with a team DH with only 7.5 inches of travel on it.
Similar Products Used:Kona stab primo, oryx dho one, schwinn straight-8, cannondale fulcrum
Bike Setup:frame broke into pieces and parts are stock except for amoeba handlebars, odi lock-on grips and when I do not-so-technical rides I use shimano clipless pedals
Bottom Line:If you don't have this bike in your garage, well, too bad. It's a great pedaling downhill bike but it doesn't seem to like taking big freeride hits. So if you're into fast stuff and you don't think that you're riding a plane well, it was the bike for you

Strengths:I got the team one.(blue yellow and black)but it is basically the same bike except for teh rock shox delux pro rear shock adn teh boxxer. Still, this bike is awsome!! It is great and pedals like a dream and is still plush. Fits great and it doesn't weigh too much either. it takes turns very precicley as well. it is a smooth corrected ride that I am happy I have. The hadely rear hub is awsome
Weaknesses:For some (me included) the monster t is a weakness but I didn't have to deal with that. It feels a little heavy while in the air. My rock shox rear shock makes a high piched squeaking sound when I bounce up and down on it really fast, and also when I bronco, but you guys have a fox rear shox. Also gt is going under so i don't know about the warrantee I am not too worried though. you cant get a 20mm upgrade for the rear swing arm.

Strengths:i-drive suspension system

Weaknesses:absolutely none
Bike Setup:custom parts spec: JR T fork, hutchinson tires, hope disc brakes, 8-speed megarange drivetrain, mavic 321 rims, raceface bar, titec stem, oury grips, WTB saddle, hope big'un front hub
Bottom Line:This bike is better than sex! Every trail can be ridden MUCH faster, no matter how intense. This bike is perfect for North Shore downhills. My other bike is an i-drive 3.0 (again, custom spec) and after owning it for three months and being so impressed with the i-drive, I tried out the DHi and had to have it. The DHi is light for a downhill rig and even more so with the way I have spec'd mine out. It accelerates like a rocket and is easy to move with your body on the trail. It corners like it's on rails and takes drops like there's no tomorrow. If a bike performs like this on the trails of the North Shore, there shouldn't be any reason why someone wouldn't rave about it. The only downside is the expense. I paid $3,500 canadian for the frame only, and you know what? I don't regret it one bit.
If you have one already, buy an i-drive survival kit cause when GT is gone, you won't have a parts supplier.

Purchased At:Velo Pro (Goleta)
Strengths:Strong and smooth, very plush on the big stuff. Excellent parts from the factory. The guy who said the DX pedals don't grip well doesn't know how to set them up, you need to back out the set screws and put a drop of loc-tite on each one so they will stay, after that they ride like clipless. The bike was supposed to have Mavic D321's but I got the tiogas instead, not a big deal. As far as the XT cassette, the reason for that is that XTR doesn't come in an 11-32 spread. and anyone one who cares about an XT shifter v. XTR is way too darn picky. My bike didn't come with the fancy THE fender but it did come with a Gazzy Jr 2.6 in front and a gazzi dual 2.3 in the rear and I have had no problems with flats. Pre load the suspension and it is very easy to bunny hop and boost off lips. Hadley rear hub is a nice piece of equipment.
Weaknesses:The Monster T is the sickest big hit fork but it is too big and heavy(9.75lbs) for me(150lbs) So i put a Manitou X-Vert Carbon(5.9lbs) on and dropped 3.75lbs down to 39.5 total weight. But the bike pedals like only 30lbs, seriously this bike can sprint better than my FSR big hit (2000 model w 5.5" rear) The stock headset was a low end WTB model so I put a King on, i also put a Salsa seat clamp on becasude the GT one is sort of cheap. Other than that i put Easton Scandium DH bars in lieu of the cheesy Syncros stockers. And a an MRD top Crown with integrated stem to further reduce weight, eliminate the bar shims needed with the tioga cube stem, and to add adjustability for a better set up.

Bottom Line:very cool bike for an incredible price, considering an M1 frame alone costs $2,850 and you can get the entire 2001 GT DHi race for as little as $3,499. that is only $650 for a custom MRP, XT/XTR gruppo, Stout DH wheelset and an other wise solid DH build kit. If you are a big guy keep the Monster T, if you are a little guy or a racer, get a Boxxer or a manitou and sell the the Monster to cover the cost. Kick A$$ solid and very fast bike for a smokin price!!!!! Get one while while you still can most stores are out of stock and GT only has a few left!!!!!

Strengths:amazing plush feel, no bob at all-idrive eliminates feedback from pedal strokes that normal DH bikes get. it's a dream to ride uphill and then huck huge going down. this thing is tough as hell and it'll take everything you give it. excellent value, cheap actually- it's full XTR.
Weaknesses:honestly there isn't anything i can think of. i love the bike so much that i think i'm going to marry it
Similar Products Used:Intense M1, Santa Cruz Super 8, Norco VPS 1, Rocky Mtn RM6, etc...
Bike Setup:Stock, full XTR
Bottom Line:this bike rocks so much ass and the value is purely amazing. You're not going to find a DH bike that's this cheap with this setup. And on top of that, it is better than any DH bike out there. It pedals like a dream, takes the 20 footers like curbs, and the riding position is perfect. this bike is perfect-really! Anyone in search of a DH bike needs one

Price Paid: $3000.00
Purchased At:Long Island Bike Shop
Strengths:This Is The Real Deal..!
-Value Priced
-Top Notch Components
-Great Pedaler
-Efficient Suspension
Weaknesses:-Tires are a joke. 2.3" nokians are crap.
-Change the tubes too! XC tubes on a DH bike???
-Shimano DX pedals suck. Absolutely no grip!
Similar Products Used:-Santa Cruz Super 8
-Intense Uzzi DH
Bike Setup:All stock except for:
-Maxxis Highroller Tires
-Intense DH Tubes
-DK Iron Cross Platform Pedals
Bottom Line:An unbelievable deal on a top-notch Downhill bike. There are a few things that need to be upgraded (tires, tubes, pedals) but overall, it's race ready. The bike pedals well, handles big drops with ease, and rails on the slopes.

A couple of things to point out:
The inner MRP chainguide plate needs a few washers to close the gap so that your chain doesn't fall inbetween the chain ring and inner plate.
Make sure and tighten ever bolt on the bike, as well as all the spokes, when you first get it.

Enjoy!

Strengths:Almost ready to ride out of the box
Good frame
Good components
Weaknesses:Fork weight
Complicated chain guide
Long cranks
Dual tires
weak wheels (mine came with laserdisc's)
Similar Products Used:Turner
Balfa bb7
Bottom Line:A good bike for the money. Easy to pedal. I don't feel mine is quite active on little hits. Had problems with water and mud leaking in the excentric. Lot's maintenance in wet conditions. But I like the ride a lot. I'll be back with an other post later...

Strengths:A ton of bike for the money. Nice quiet plush ride, frame is Bomb proof, top end components. If you throw a 36T chain ring on you can take it on the trails.
Weaknesses:Low end headset and didn't like the 2.3 Nokian tires, so I changed them to Intense 2.7's.
Similar Products Used:Nothing DH specific. GT XCR 1000, GT STS 1000
Bike Setup:Monster T, Hayes 8" rotors, D321 rims, XTR Drivetrain w/XT shifter. Everything came stock, I only swapped the tires.
Bottom Line:I've done some freeriding but only 1 real weekend of downhilling (my first) and this bike gave me a lot of confidence in dry and serious mud conditions. Makes drops seem effortless and gives descending a whole new dimension. Bike feels so plush on the rough stuff and feels great to jump, just point the front wheel and hold on! I like GT anyway, but was considering a Super 8 for a DH rig, until the DHi came out. I can't say enough good things about the bike, so just go out and try one for yourself!

Strengths:All good. It was worth the wait. Absolutely bomb proof. I upgraded to the DHi large from an XCR 3000 medium. Had to have the I-drive to climb and the DHi can do it. Super fast and silient. XTR components are very acurate and its balance on a log or rail is precise. It handles real smooth in the air and off the huge drops. The Hayes brakes are perfect.
Weaknesses:No manual! Syncros components are a bit shady, but are still holdin up
Similar Products Used:Uzzi SLX, M1, Santa Cruz, Specialized FSR
Bike Setup:Monster T, XTR components, Mavic, D-321, Nokian 2.3 tires, Hayes Hydraulic 8" rotor DH, stock pretty much......-so far-
Bottom Line:Solid. Stealth. No rattles, so fast, just bomb proof. If you come from a BMX racing/trials background, this bike will let you do anything. Urban freeride and big rock drops..................all good.!

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $3500.00
Purchased At:Cycles & Sports
Strengths:Fantastic Ride! Frame is bullet proof, components are top of the line, XTR top to bottom with Mavic 321 rims. The I-Drive system can actually climb!
Weaknesses:Later models have Tioga White Stripe rims, which are very low end, headset and riser bar are middle of the road.
Similar Products Used:Kona Stab Primo, Stinky Primo, Stab, Stab Dee Lux, Stinky 5. Giant NRS, Lobo, etc etc etc
Bike Setup:Stock (so far) with a larger T.H.E. Fender. Large frame earlier model with Mavic 321 disc rims. Tires, riser bar, headset on the way.
Bottom Line:This thing rocks. Very fast and super stable platform for anything from open speed sections to super skinny single track technical rides. Big drops and urban assaults are a breeze, I-Drive is flawless, you can actually pedal a 42 lb rig and not struggle, you can even do some light cross country with this rig. It is fast, strong, and easy to pedal (for a downhiller).

Price Paid: $3900.00
Strengths:Everything. I'm so happy with this bike. And for the money? It can't be beat. I'm 5'9" 150, Sport racer The fact that this bike pedals so well is a definite plus for me. I can get back up to speed again quickly after I make my inevitable mistakes. With the Boxxer on the front, I can't think of a better set-up for me.
Weaknesses:Did not come exactly as spec'ed. Got an XT shifter in stead of an XTR. Got Tioga wheels instead of D321. Cheesy Syncros riser bars. And crappy spec headset. Also the spec'ed tires are useless, (for DH). Now running High Rollers.
Similar Products Used:Yeti, M1, Turner etc...
Bike Setup:Boxxer, Tioga riser bars, CK head set, High Rollers, WTB saddle
Bottom Line:This bike can't be beat. A near perfect pedaler. Maybe not suited for "hucking". But as a race bike. Look no further. This thing has made me SO much faster and given me SO much more confidence. And for less than $4k? You CANNOT beat that.

Strengths:9" and still pedals well. Huge drops don't stress the frame.
Weaknesses:No manual and GT was no help setting the rear sag.
Similar Products Used:Uzzi DH.
Bike Setup:Xvert Carbon, Hope DH4 brakes, Monkey Lite carbon bar and MG Easton stem, 646 pedals, 34T front ring for xc riding, King head set, Hope bulb front hub, everything else is stock.
Bottom Line:This is my new freeride rig, hence the 34T ring. Still a few big drops to try but big air is no concern anymore! What's really nice is how well this beast climbs. No shuttle riding, so a big DH bike can be a real issue. I find this as good as any middle weight enduro bike for heading up the trail. The DHi climbs way better than my Uzzi DH and it's not even a downhill rig. I've owned one GT bike before and swore I'd never buy another one. This bike has really changed all that. As for racing I have no clue, never been in a DH race. For freeriding, this is bomb baby. Drops, drops and more drops LOL! Oh I almost forgot about the logs, except you always want to ride off them with 9" of travel! It's 39lbs of fun.
