Favorite Trail:All
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:C.P. Bicycle shop
Strengths:Design, ride,durability
Weaknesses:The bottom shock bolt from the early version. Pacific owned built GT's actually got this corrected.
Similar Products Used:Niner RIP 9
Bike Setup:Sid Hydrair 100 Shimino XT discs, Fox rear, XT cranks, "Real" hubs...
Bottom Line:GREAT BIKE !! This is a review for those looking for a good used full suspen. This bike is good. Awesome good. Start by saying I've had it 8+ years & it still does well what it did in month 01. Things werent always this way. The original shock tabs bent and ruined the frame (month 6). Sent it in to GT & while they had it, Bankruptcy! So no replacement for the next 10 months. Needless to say I was disappointed with GT AND the shop that sold it to me as no substitute ride was offered.

Since getting the replacement frame (they did correct the issue by the way) it has been trouble free. It rides through technical stuff like no tomorrow. It climbs OK, not great but good enough. It rails turns GREAT. Decends suparb. Handles rock gadens SWEET!! After 7 years and NO maintainance to the fork of anything else for that matter, it STILL rides the same (almost, these is creak but am nursing it with graphite powder). Only complaint to date is the hole in the shock support frame piece is too small to take the factory bolt. Little play as a result but no major issue. Had to use a partially threaded shoulder bold Anyway IF you can confirm you have a post 2000 frame and your considering purchase this is STILL a sweet bike. Trust me I replaced it with a RIP nine & I can say the GT STILL holds its own. While I like the RIP, I believe GT set the bar high with the i drive design. 5 flamin turds for value 4 flamins for overall (because of the early issue) After 8 years this thing is still an object of desire. Not many things I covet after 7 years of riding... wife excluded ;)

Strengths:a very nice ride. this bike is very forgiving while jumping. the fox float rear suspension is real nice esspecialy with the lockout.
Weaknesses:the frame is a piece of crap. i bought it used with very little miles on it. I rode it about 40 miles and the bolt above the rear suspension cracked eventually cracking the frame a little. i was lucky and was able to get the frame fixed. i am a little worried about how this bike will preform in the future.
Bottom Line:i would not recomend this bike for anybody. i thought it would hold up better. for the type of riding i did there was no way this bike should have broken.

Strengths:When I first bought this bike, I really enjoyed the amount of cushion provided by the full suspension, and was psyched about hitting the trail. Tried several other comparable bikes, including GF Sugar, Giant NRS, Klein, etc. Nothing compared to the plush ride provided by the GT. So I hit the trail...
Weaknesses:...and after 8 months of use, the @$#%&ing rear shock bolt gave way and the frame cracked. I've read several other reviews on this site, and it appears that multiple persons have experienced this same problem. The bike shop that sold me the GT also explained that at least 5 of their customers had experienced this problem. They were offering $200 upgrade to the Giant NRS 1 frame (switch over most other components). I'm doing the same after reading the positive reviews on the NRS 1.
Similar Products Used:Previously rode a hardtail.
Bike Setup:Got rid of the Koski brakes and replaced with Shimano XT, most other components are XT as well.
Bottom Line:Wish this bike would have held up because it was by far the most comfortable, but it's a shame that so many riders are having problems with the frame cracking. Apparantly Pacific (company that bought GT) is hitting most of the bike shops in the Colorado area to reinvigorate commitment to GT products, but I don't think they'll be able to drum up enough support. Also learned that the cracking problem was due to the frames being overheated during treatment, and now the new frames from Pacific are being manufactured out of Taiwan, but haven't learned about their durability, and don't really care at this point given what I've learned and read. See ya GT!

I love the bike and the i-Drive is great. GT/Pacific is coming out with their new line of mountain bikes and they're going to somewhat stay lookin the same.

Bottom Line:Called Pacific Cycle LLC today Dec. 26 2001 re waranttee... they openly admitted that the seat pods are "faulty product" and suggest I bring it to a local retailer... No waranttees will even be considered until February 2002. Company says they are waiting for shipment of new I Drive frames from Asia. However all other GT waranttees will only last for a year from purchase date. Why then are retailers selling this frame on their floors?? A law suit waiting to happen perhaps a recall is in order guys... Sure hope my seat pod stays together until Feb...

Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Wheel World
Strengths:Price, at first.
Weaknesses:Rear end feels weak. Top shock mount is know to break and mine did after 100 or so miles of use.
Bike Setup:I purchased the frame from Wheel World and set it up with:
Psylo SL
Shimano Xt Discs
Mavic Rims
Etc.
Bottom Line:This frame blows. Bottom Line. According to my bike computer I have 132 miles on this frame. The mileage includes 1 race, light trail riding, and general riding around the hood. I did not do any drops higher than 2 feet, I did not put this thing through any abuse. I went out for a light ride on the local canal trail the other day. As I got up to sprint, I heard a clank. I thought it was the chain. Only after finishing my ride did the top shock bolt fall out and I noticed the area around the bolt was bending and starting to crack. All this after a 100 or so miles.

That isn't the worst of it though. The worst shop in the world (wheel world) told me to call Pacific and deal with them. Pacific has been great to deal with, but they want me to ship through an authorized gt dealer. I want Wheel World to handle it being that I spent $1,000 for the frame, front shock and derailleur. Until Wheel World does help me out, I will continue to bash them any chance I get. Bottom line, the GT frame sucks and Wheel World is even worse. However, if they choose to help out, I will retract this statement.

Strengths:Slow speed stabilty, relatively good pedal efficiency for a 4" travel bike
Weaknesses:The WEEEEAAAK upper shock mount on frame. I have cracked two frames.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro, Brodie Thumper
Bike Setup:Formula Discs, XT hubs and cassette, Psylo XC forks
Bottom Line:As much as I first liked the bike, I will never put my leg over another I-Drive piece of s**t frame again. Any abuse that I can throw at that thing it should have taken with ease. The first time that the frame cracked (buckled), I was literally on the most tame section of trail and I slid right of the seat because the seat mast completely buckled!
I had a hell of a time with the warranty because it looked like such a huge impact. Then a new frame and a couple months later I took my bike into a shop for some routine maintenance and SURPRISE, two hairline cracks in the frame!

To the guy below that can't believe the stories of this happening, believe it. Look at the Mountain Bike Action website (ask RC), there are more stories (a lot more).

IF YOU DO ANY TECHNICAL OR TRAIL RIDING AT ALL, DO NOT BUY THIS FRAME. Obviously GT was tired of everyone telling them how beefy the 99 I-Drives were so they cheaped out on frame material. No chillis for the overall rating as who the *#%$ wants to deal with this, especially now that GT is bankrupt.

Bottom Line:My ex-racer buddy(195-210lbs) bought this same bike(med. frame) and bent the(weak)upper shock pivot bolt which deformed the mount flanges. GT warranteed the frame but replaced it with a XCR1500; the shop swapped over all of the parts. When I rode it it felt like a sports car compared to my Lg. frame XCR4000 but I didn't like the brakes(Koski's) or the seat(SDG). I saw the deal on this frame/shock and Manitou Mars at Supergo and decided to spec. my own parts from JensonUSA(great to work with). I feel like my bike is better than the factory spec.'d bike. I can't tell the diff. between XT & LX components. Everything works great on this bike, but the brake booster is a must. LX brakes are much better than Koski(sorry Koski).
I hover around 170-180 lbs. and we climb and descend anything that won't cost a paycheck, and we can fly through
twisty singletrack w/excelent control. Some people say this bike is twitchy but I call it sporty. I have never raced but started riding w/zero excperience in 98' on my XCR4000
and feel like the i-Drive bike is the best bike for the all around, nonspecific rider. I haven't broken anything on this bike. Athough maintainence is a must, I give this bike top ratings for my own presonal type of riding.

Bottom Line:i've set mine up as a lightweight downhill bike or free ride bike if thats what you wanna call it. as standard its fine. the forks are too short. the bike handles so much better with a set of 4"+ forks the head andgle is slackened slightly but this is a good thing. the bike is less twitchy. xc riders will perfer the sid's. anyone else should change em soon as poosible. havign come from a number of bikes, form my gt team bike to my old kona dh stab. this is the best bike i have ever bought. the colours are a bit weird, but if you buy a SHIFT commando top it matches perfectly.

Weaknesses:Front end to steep with factory rock shox sid (feels like you are going to go over the bars if you do a bit of a drop off). Personal preference I like a sturdier drive train than the Shimano LX cranks and rings that came with it.
Syncros stem and bars not sturdy enough for what the bike can do.

Strengths:A plush ride, great handling and feel, good power transfer (minimal bobbing, etc.), and an excellent component group are the most important.
Weaknesses:The paint seems to chip easily, and the 6061 frame is a little soft, making it easy to grind away the dropouts. Of course, I was used to the Trek TrueTemper OXIII frame I rode before, but the harder 7075 aluminum would be an improvment.
Bike Setup:SID 100, XTR drivetrain (stock XT crankset), Grimeca System 8 disc brake (front only).
Bottom Line:IMHO, this could very well be the best bike of its kind for the price. As long as it lasts well, I'll remain a satisfied customer.

Strengths:plush ride soaks up the little stuff able to handle the big stuff. I'm 6 foot and weigh 200 lbs, ride aggressively and this bike begs for more. climbs like a hard tail descends with total confidence, even at high speeds. Thoughful component selection minus the Koski brakes and rock hard seat. The XCR 2000 is meant to be a trail bike, comfortable for epic rides, nimble enough for technical singletrack, plush enough for launching off jumps; it does almost anything you could realistically expect a FS/XC bike to do.
Weaknesses:Stem came loose on Amassa Back trail and gave me a new scar. Grips fell apart after 2 rides. Syncros handle bars were too narrow for my taste. Koski brakes wore quickly and were replaced with Hayes hydraulics within the first month. The headset is cheap and noisey but still holding on. Most of the weaknesses I have listed are things most riders will replace or upgrade anyway to suit their riding style.
Similar Products Used:Trek Fuel, Yeti ASR, Specialized FSR, Cannondale Jekyle
Bike Setup:SID 100, Fox air with lockout, Hayes hydraulic disc, shimano 545 pedals
Bottom Line:I've read really bad and really good reviews about this bike. I personally believe the good reviews. I've put thousands of miles on this bike (mostly in Utah and colorado) and I've never been let down with it's performance. If someone has bent or broken this frame, it's because they are doing things this bike was not designed for or they dont know how to ride. This bike ROCKS and for all around trail riding it is tough to beat. It may be a bit on the heavy side, but trail riding to me is about comfort and confidence that your ride can take what you dish out. Try one and you will see.

Favorite Trail:Ojibway
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1250.00
Purchased At:Town & Country Cyclery
Strengths:Very plushy ride, but no bobbing. Good components selection. Rear shock.
Weaknesses:Expensive, unless you find a good deal.
Color selection (unless you buy Team edition).
SDG saddle is too hard. Koski brake levers are for x-large people (with my short fingers levers are not ergonomical).
Removing front wheel sucks. Suspension little beat noisy. Not too much rear tire clearance. Lack of lockout on fork. SID fork requires adaptor. Grips not very comfy.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M60 (rigid hardtail), Kona Stinky, Specialized FSR, Giant XTC, Marin, Trek Fuel 80, Rocky Mountain, Diamondback.
Bike Setup:So far almost standard (shorter stem and Shimano 535 clipless pedals). Soon will change the saddle and upgrade brake levers and grips.
Bottom Line:I love this bike, it is great. Shimano XT drivetrain works flawlesly. I used to be a fan of GripShift twisters, but not any more. It is so much easier to use RapidFire. I am still experimenting with tuning the suspension. Stock saddle is so bad, so after 30 minutes of riding, I cannot pedal anymore seated. Removing the front wheel is a nightmare (there is not enought clearance, between SID fork arch and brake pads). Either you have to remove air from the tire or upgrade to disk brakes. My bike missing a screw on i-drive ring due to interference with bottom bracket. So far bike rocks and I did not brake frame or shock pivot yet. Front fork bobs too much during ascending... , but going down is sweet. Before I bought this bike I tried a lot of full suspension bikes, but either they had not enough travel (Gary Fisher Sugar, Specialized FSR '00, Trek Fuel) or had too much travel (Kona, Trek VRX). Only Rocky Mountain and DiamondBack came close.
GT could only come with better colors (make flammy red bikes instead of white, black and silver).
Typically I am very picky, but GT i-drive will get maximum scores.
Buy GT i-Drive, unless you are a hardtail fan or like a thrill of big drops.

Strengths:I-Drive for sure! Good component mix for the money. Solid build, good welds. Weight isn't bad for amount of travel and I-Drive.
Weaknesses:Eccentric has some "GT only" parts. Saddle is rock hard, tires are a little weak. Little clearance between brakes on front, not due to brakes but due to RockShox Sid 100.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Sugar, Trek SuperV700, K2 Beast, K2 757
Bike Setup:Stock, a few changes, new seat, new tires, about it so far. Thinking of front disk brake.
Bottom Line:Great ride! It's hard to find a situation where this bike doesn't do well, but it's also hard to find a situation where this bike shines above all the rest. This is not a knock. The bike does well in all situations, single-track, downhill, steep climbs, trials riding, fire-roads, even on pavement (with the lock-out). It's not a one-dimensional bike, so it wouldn't score a 10 in any category (unless you consider "all-around" a riding catagory, which I happen to, because most of us normal people can't afford a different bike for each type of situation/trail we want to ride), but it does score 8 to 9 in all riding situations! Which is why I love this bike. The shifting is smooth. The I-Drive works flawlessly, no pedal bob at all. Usually don't even need the lock-out unless you are on the pavement.
I've read complaints below about the dog-bone and the eccentric parts. I have a friend who owns 3 shops in NW Indiana. After having sold hundreds of I-Drives, he has had only 3 returned for a broken dog-bone, and that's the only problems he's seen with them.
If you can find a Y2K model yet, you can get a great deal this late in the year. There are even still a few 99's left out there floating around, but beware, none of the 99 I-Drives are disc-brake compatible, a dumb move in frame design that GT fixed for Y2K.
If you can find one, buy it. You'll love it. The only pain is the small amount of clearance between the bakes on the Sid 100, which they started putting on the bike about half way through the year. Half the time your brake pads are ripped off, or they get twisted, when you put the tire in and out. Not the biggest deal if you don't mind letting a little air out, or if your rack doesn't require front tire removal.
The I-Drive design, (eccentric, dog-bone, etc.) has changed very little over the last 3 years. Almost unheard of in the bike industry now days, they must have found something that works!
Gotta give 'em 5!

Tracks like crazy, I feel so comfortable on the technical singletrack stuff. It climbs well also. If you are making the switch from a HT, this is the bike for you. The lock-out is really necessary. It actually raises the seat about an inch when it's locked out, it changes your angle a little bit, but nothing you can't adjust too. Get one now at the end of the year. I guess GT ran out of RS Sid XC's so models shipped later in the year come with SID 100's, also a great shock. If you like to ride, this bike will make you love riding! Anybody who rides it will fall in love with mountain biking!

Bottom Line:The bikes not bad, but its far from perfect. frame is a piggy in weight category. rear tyre doesnt hook up because its a "XC" whatever that means on a 29lb bike?? Wheels are super weak, not sure if its just the batch or what, tacoed the front on a weak endo and they were laced incorrectly or at least thats what the Shimano disc manual says. The shock bolts come loose frequently, and im only 150lbs. heard other problems about the bolts too.
Overall the bike is a nice FS ride, besides the nitpicking. Rides smooth and isint that what we all want?
my advice to GT: simplifying the design would shave weight and also get rid of all the nooks and tight tolerances that loose their paint because the AL cant hold on to it. AND loose the paint schemes for the love of god.

Strengths:Smooth pedaling. Rolls over everything. Great handling in singletrack.
Weaknesses:Weak upper-shock mount, poor cable routing for front derailleur, high standover, lockout shock changes seat angle, weight.
Similar Products Used:Owned K2 Proflex 1000 and Aeon Isis. Have test ridden almost every full suspension made.
Bike Setup:All XT including XT hydraulic disc brakes, monkeylite handlebar.
Bottom Line:This bike was fun, fast, and smooth despite its weight of 28.8 lbs. with the XT discs(the frame with I-drive installed weighed 7.5 lbs.) To get a top tube length of 23-24 inches you have to have a standover height of over 30 inches. Inconvenient when you're only 5-8.

I broke the upper shock mounting bolt twice in 2 months and the seat mast deformed where the bolt attaches. The metal in the mast is about 1/2 the thickness of other seat masts I've seen. I weigh over 200 lbs. but I've never had a problem with the shock bolt on any other bike.

If you ride in mud, the front and rear derailleur cables will not shift properly after about 3 rides. Installing Ride On Goretex cables will take care of that problem.

When properly adjusted, the rear shock is compressed about 25% of its length. If you lock out the rear shock, the shock will extend, but not compress. So, the rear of the bike will ride higher than it does with the shock unlocked.

The bike was fun to ride and very competent, but the maintenance was a nightmare compared to other bikes I've owned.

Bottom Line:When comes to cross country riding, this bike flys. ALthough my bike now ways over 30 pounds (it was 28.5 stock!)it is a very agile climber. When seated, pedaling smoothly, this bike doesn't bob at all as far as i can see.
On the descents however, this bike leaves me craving more, plusher travel. Air shocks just don't cut it up here.
This bike is a handful at highspeeds because of its short, steep angles. A longer travel fork (4-5") would slacken the angles and improve this bikes downhill capeabilities.
Fatter tires would also help a great deal, but unfortunatly, the rear triangle has hardly any clearence.

I have just recently blew up my FOX FLOAT RC shock, and since Norco is no longer servicing Fox shocks (Canada), they have to send it to California, which will probably take a long time.

This bike makes alot of noise too. I don't know where it comes from, but I don't think it's serious.

Over all, this bike leaves me craving an RM6 or Bullit.

Similar Products Used:I've never abused another bike anywhere close to as much as I have abused this one ;)
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:This bike is loads of fun. I've raced/ridden it in wet and dry conditions. Where do I start? The Tioga tires are light, but extremely thin - tire liners are a must. The wheelset may be good if you want disc brakes, but I don't (too expensive, too much maintenance, and too much weight - brakes just slow you down anyways ;). Because of the disc-readiness, the front wheel is dished and the rear wheel is weaker than normal. I've already got 3 good sized dents in my rear rim. The brakes that come stock wore out after maybe 100 miles - they were "high performance" (worked well, but didn't last long) I guess. The SID 100 is great - soaks up the bumps well. The Fox Rear shock with lockout works great too - the bike actually climbs better without locking out the shock thanks to i-drive technology. I find the lock out useful when I want to race roadies on the road. =;) The frame seems alright - it's nice and scuffed up by now. I did have problems at first with the Shimano 9 speed stuff - it seems more fidgety than 8 speed stuff. The pedals suck badly in mud, but I guess that's expected. The handle bars, headset, and seatpost are all made by Syncros and seem a little on the cheap side. Overall, the bike blazes down trails well and climb well compared to other bikes in it's class (not compared to my Bianchi B.U.S.S, but that's a differnt story...). The only thing that I would say definitely needs to be replaced are the wheels and the pedals. I'd recommend this bike to you if you're looking for an XC bike with a freeride flair. I've had way too much fun on this bike. Also, I only weigh 135 lbs - this bike probably is not very good for someone pushing 200 lbs. I paid just over $1600 for it. Remember, the important thing is that you ride - not what you ride.

I have the non hinged model and have had no problems with it loosening, even after hitting a tree, hard.... bars first. BTW XCR-LE's 1000-3000 all use the same stem. Not a single stem complaint for the xcr-le or the 1500, one complaint about the 1000 stem.. I think the LBS's are not setting the bike up properly because my stem works perfectly even after withstanding impacts. Weaknesses:Cheap-o plastic stem cap, Knocking sound in left crankarm, Seems a bit delicate.
Similar Products Used:Trek, Giant
Bike Setup:All stock except for Hayes disc brake (front only)
Bottom Line:First of all, I am not by any means an authority on bicycles
in general. I can only speak from my limited off-road riding experience (about a year and a half). That said, let's get the bad stuff out of the way. Even after a mild crash the handlebars always seemed to twist out of alignment. Like a numbskull I tightened the crap out of the stem bolt on the top which in turn stripped the plastic cap which basically holds the entire front end in place. While this weakness is partially due to my own fault, it really shouldn't have been loose in the first place. Fortunately, the bike shop had a spare stem cap! Ever since they changed it the h-bars have remained solid, even after some hard crashes. Needless to say I will not be tightening that bolt again. The other annoyance is this incessant knocking sound coming from somwhere in the cranks or bottom bracket region. It's really only audible during climbs where heavy pressure is being applied to the left pedal. The bike shop assured me that this is nothing to worry about, it's just typical aluminum sounds.? Hmmmm.... After they tinkered with it however, it doesn't seem to be as bad although it's still there. They did mention that they could order me a new frame. If it really makes me nuts I'll probably ask them to do just that.
I hate to compare this to an obviously inferior bicycle but my Trek 6000 could be bashed into a brick wall repeatedly and still retain that beautiful bike solidness that the XCR seems to somewhat lack. On to the good stuff....Firstly out of all the full suspension designs out there NOTHING is as pleasing to the eye as this thing is. When I stare at it sitting idly in my apartment it SCREAMS to be smashed silly down rutted, rocky singletrack. I have to quickly turn away before I FLIP OUT! Anyway, when I am fortunate enough to be flying down the trail it performs and handles magnificently well. Especially that oh so sweet front and rear suspension.
(What's the deal with the front fork; in all the literature I've seen it says it comes with the SID XC but mine's got a SID 100. What's the difference anyway? More travel?) I guess it doesn't really matter; it EATS ALL OBSTACLES (well...almost). Enough seems to have already been said about its goat-like climbing prowess. For long fire road climbs, I've found it best to keep the rear shock locked for smoother, crisper climbing. For quicker obstacle strewn or bumpy climbs it seems best to leave it unlocked and let that rear wheel DIG in. Not that I understand what the i-drive is all about but I encounter zero bobbing when climbing. I should also add that this bike is my first experience with full suspension. It has taken me many rides to get a feel for the handling and I am just beginning to get very comfortable with it. All it took was a test ride at the bike shop and I knew I had to have it! My main reason for riding is for the sheer fun of it and anyone else who rides primarily for this reason will not be let down by this bike.
I am really looking forward to some upgrades as well (pedals, rear disc brake, saddle) Oh yeah, the Hayes disc brake I slapped on the front is incredible except for a few loud squeels once in a while. I can live with that over a rim brake any day! I choose to give it four chilis because hey, nothing is perfect. The bike's a blast and it comes close!

i can give a few pointers from my first run if ur gonna take this thing dh. first of all, get some beefier tires. probably like tioga dh 26 x 2.3 or something, cuz these tires didn't hold up too well. that's pretty much all I can think of. obviously i'm talking amatuer dh here people, no pro. i would not do any pro stuff with this bike of course, cuz it's not a dh bike.

Bottom Line:This bike is amazing. I used to ride a hardtail with judy xc's in the front. The components are practically full xt. The I drive on this is not hype at all. The drivetrain allows u full fluid continuous motion through ur pedal strokes. I named this bike The Goat cuz if climbs like crazy, better than my hardtail. The rear shock has a lockout which is so useful. I immediately replaced those koski brakes, would not trust my life with em. Replaced the syncros stem cuz i heard bad things about em and the syncros bars jus didn't feel good. I really jus don't like syncros. The shocks on this bike are great. It comes with Sid xc's (the factory gave me sid 100's by accident, sweet!) and a fox float rc. I bought the bike for $1620 excl. tax. It's amazing. And the color looks better in real life than in pictures.

Maintanance wise, this bikes cleans up very easily. Another great thing about the I drive, it's open so i basically just jam a hose in a hole, turn it on, and the drivetrain is clean. I love it.

On my rides now I almost always never leave the saddle anymore when i'm zooming down single track. Normally on my hardtail my legs would eventually go numb and if my rear got at all close to the saddle, it would be sore for days.

This bike's value is exceptional. Professional shocks and components for a reasonable price. What more could I ask from this bike?

I ride xc and dh, i've only ridden this bike on xc so far and tomorrow i'm going up to snow summit to do some dh racing. So when i get back i'll have to do a follow up post on how it does downhill, i'm guessing it will do quite well.

Bottom Line:Prior to buying this bike I had narrowed my selection down to the GT XCR 2000, Jekyll 900, Specialized Enduro Pro, GF Sugar 2, and the AEON Isis.

The day I decided to buy the GT I had the opportunity to try all five of these bikes, one after the other. I picked a hillside that had been recently logged and was covered with roots, stumps, rocks, and dirt piles. The GT was the only bike that I could make it all the way up the hill without spinning out. It was by FAR the smoothest coming back down the hill.

Installing great brakes and tires on this bike made a noticeable difference on a already great bike. I recommend this bike highly to anyone who wants what I think is the best bike around for $2,000.

By the way, if you install Shimano disks you will have problems with the stainless steel lines trying to cut your frame in half. I installed 1/4" clear spiral wrap (used for electrical wiring) on the lines. Looks great, weighs 1 ounce. The clear wrap works better than the black wrap. The clear is softer and has a better grip on the lines.

The SID performs nicely on the downhills, but if you want a plushier feel in front I would recommend a Marzocchi Bomber Atom 80 or the like. But I am very happy with it.
The Vanilla RC is also awesome! 4 1/2" of travel! WOW! It's got a lock out but I don't even need it, no rear bob at all.
The only thing that I have changed out is the Deore shifters. Didn't like the feel of them so I went with XT pods.
The Koski V's aren't bad. I thought I would have changed them out but the braking was damn good(suprisingly). Not much flex in them but we'll see down the road.
If you're looking for a good XC/freeride and don't have alot of cash, take a look at the XCR-2000. I think you will be impressed!!

I'd give it an 8 but there are that many flamin' turds! RIDE HARD or go home!!!

Strengths:fun! disc hubs
Weaknesses:The bolt, and dog bone (also where the seat post is located) that the rear shock bolts into is very weak.
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain Spice
Bike Setup:Stock except for XT brakes.
Bottom Line:If you happen to break the bolt that hooks the shock to the frame, like I did, expect GT to take their sweet time to replace it. A big bike company like this should be able to replace this in a couple days, but somehow they manage to leave you without a bike for several weeks. So be warned if you are going to buy this bike, be nice to it. Even though it is such a blast to ride, and the bike begs you to pick the nastiest line, don't do it unless you are planning on not riding for a while. I still give it two chilis cause it's so much fun to ride.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:I-Drive is the sweetest! Hollowtech cranks are nice. FOX Float RC, Disc mounts/hubs
Weaknesses:Weight, Koski Brakes. The XCR LE Costs to much!! :)
Similar Products Used:98 GT lts 2000 ds, 97 Proflex 657, 95 GT Avalanche
Bike Setup:XTR front and rear der. Ride-on cables, Hayes disc F+R, Easton Monkey-Lite Riser, ODI Lock-on grips,
Bottom Line:With a few upgrades this bike ends up better than the XCR 1000 or 1500!!! Only the XCR LE is better. Climbs and descends very nicely. I give this bike 5 flaming turds. Now all It needs is XTR Levers, XTR cassette, Mavic 317 disc rims with King disc-go tech hubs, and a Chris King TI Headset. If you haven't tried I-Drive do so before buying your next bike.

Favorite Trail:Twisty turny ones
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Light, awesome looks, excellent component selection,
GT I-drive is truly amazing!
Weaknesses:Koski brakes?? Tioga 2.1 tires don't leave much room for a wheel out of true, can't even get the front tire off without deflating.
Similar Products Used:Mongoose full suspension (you know, the cheap one)
Bike Setup:Rock shox Sid 100, Fox RC float, Shimano Hollowtech XT drivetrain, Syncros, Mavic x221, Hayes disc, GT I-Drive
Bottom Line:The bike is awesome! I did upgrade the front brakes to Hayes the first week do to the fat tires and no name (koski) brakes that came with. The bike is light, fast and the suspension package sucks up anything you throw at it. I am not a real experienced rider (disclaimer), but this bike inspires confidence and I definately am faster on it than my old Mongoose (go figure).

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:I-drive, Light Weight, Fox Vanilla Float RC.
Weaknesses:Colour and Price
Similar Products Used:Specialized Ground Control (full suspension)
Bike Setup:XTR hubs (sealed bearings...oh yeah!), Mavic 517 SUP UB, added a set of Bear trap pedals
(gotta love the shin-bite), SID 100, Fox Vanilla Float RC.
Bottom Line:THE best ride I have ever been on. It rolls like butter.
It floats over rocks, logs, roots, and curbs. (Urban Assault
is my second job)
The lock-out on the Vanilla kicks. I almost seem to fly along the single track with it locked out (hard).
A well placed flick of the wrist, and you're ready to take on some knarley air and hurkin' drop offs.
The bike is light. Lighter than my Specialized.
Lighter than my GF's Gary Fisher Tasahara (sp?) Hardtail.
Than is a trendious advantage when it comes to bunny hops
over logs, road apples (horse poop) *darned profanity filters* , and library steps.
Haven't heard much about Koshi(brakes) but the seem to work, and thats all that really matters.
The I drive.......WOW. No loss of energy.
Excellent at climbing.

Can't wait to take it to South Mountain Park (Phx, AZ) and Squaw Peak (also in Phx, AZ)

Favorite Trail:ANY Technical singletrack
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Strengths:I-Drive, light weight
Weaknesses:cable routing unless using Gore, or Flak Jacket type cables.
Similar Products Used:Klein Mantra, Gary Fisher Sugar 3
Bike Setup:XT, Koski, Synchros (standard stuff)
Bottom Line:The bike I demo'd from East Coasters Cycling and Fitness in Blacksburg, Virginia. I guess they wanted a hardtailer's perspective. I had orders to thrash it to see what she's made of and to bring it home nice and muddy.

Suspension - WOW! I hurled this bike into some nasty bone crushing jeep trail washouts and the the suspension bailed me out. I should be in a hospital right now. The rear lok-out was nice on the hard pack climbs, but this bike really dug in on loose steep singletrack climbs with the rear susp. working. It would climb ANYTHING. Almost felt like you were getting a push from behind. That I-Drive really does it's thing.

With this bike it didn't matter that I just blew through rock gardens without picking lines, it just gobbled the rocks up. That is hard to get used to when you are an avowed hardtail rider. The bike made you want to take ugly lines just to see if you could get away with it. I only endo'd once and that was in a mud hole that was deeper then the hub and softer than chocolate pudding! Drop offs were a hoot!

The cable routing went right through the mud zone so unless you East Coast riders (myself!)like washing out your cable housings after wet rides and re-lubing each time you will want to go with the Gore or Flak Jacket protected type cables.

I would like to see a Manitou XVert fork on this bike and a WTB seat, Oury grips and hydraulic disc brakes if I were to keep it. Either way though I'm sure most people would be happy with it's very servicable stock setup.

The Koski brakes were very good, a set of Bontrager Valiant - Ceramic rims would make this bike touch to catch if you didn't want to mess with the cost of discs.
I may have to get a GT I-Drive, then maybe I can catch some of those Klein Mantra, and Sugar riders around here!

Give'em 5!

Favorite Trail:anything fast
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:i-drive need I say more, it is the greatest innovation in a while. Bomb proof GT construction.
Weaknesses:Bike comes with Koski engineering brakes? Haven't heard much about them.
Similar Products Used:First full suspension rig
Bike Setup:sid 100 in front, Fox float rc in back
Full XT except for the brakes
Koski brakes
mavic rims Ritchey pedals
Bottom Line:This bike rocks even though it is my first full suspension bike I think it is the best. The i-drive is awesome and really helps the knees on hills. I do alot of urban riding do to my location and current lack of a roof rack so the Fox float RC rear really come in handy. With being able to lock out the rear end you can eliminate what little bio-pacing this bike has when riding on pavement or level access roads. When it comes to getting bumpy this bike is at home doing mostly urban riding I've already launched this thing off of loading docks, stair cases and over the occasional bum and it soaks up everything. The only complaint I have is with the Koski brakes, not that they don't work but why not XT.
