i got the frame in jan. bought all the parts i needed and had it on the road last 2 weeks ago . i liked it enough that i went and bought my sister a new GT avalanche 3.0 for her birtday .
the stock bike is nice for starting out but some of the stock parts are fairly cheap .

Strengths:a really tough frame great disc brakes great rear derailleur good front derailleur awesome fork suspension that can handle just about anything(i went over a half foot tree trunk like it was nothing )has a lockout mode so when ur going up hills u can lock the shocks by flicking a switch on the fork so they dont absorb the pressure ur putting on the pedals easy shifters and the toughest tires on a bike ive seen yet(kenda nevegal)

Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:copeland in slo
Strengths:Durable. 4th year i've owned it, and took it to the shop for the first time this year for just a little service. good for the price.
Weaknesses:cheaper components, but you get what you pay for. and even though they're on the cheap side, i haven't had to replace anything except one of the wheels, and that was my fault.
Similar Products Used:my first non-mart bike
Bike Setup:all stock except added time alium pedals
Bottom Line:Pretty good for what you pay for. A good buy for somebody who is looking to do some moderate to light mtn biking. I'm in the market for a full suspension now, but this is a great starter bike. The cheaper components (brakes, derailers) require a little extra tuning to run smooth, but learn how to do this yourself and you save a bunch of money from taking the bike to the shop. it's easy and there's tons of places on the internet that will teach you for free. i'm a satisfied customer. a good enough bike that i've had it for 4 years and am just now looking to replace it with the new fs technology.

Weaknesses:brakes very finicky for me, wheels come out of true easily,
wierd noise that sounds like a problem with bottom bracket but has no effect on preformance
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:all stockbesides cheapo headset that i bought
Bottom Line:this was my first mountain bike and i have the 2003 model.
when i first got this bike i had never ridden a trail before, and it has taken me from that point to being an avid mountain biker.
overall my complaints are very few. i have been bery hard on this bike especialy in the last year and it has held up extremly well. the frame seems to be bombproof i rutinely take it off 3-4 foot ramps and jumps and have never had the fork botom out or any other problem besides chain slap. i have leaned by trial and many errors how to sevice this bike myself
and even after being taken apart and put back together by an unexperienced bike mechanic it still holds up. i have never had to replace any major part and i have bashed almost all of them. most of all i just wanted to say that this bike has served me well over a huge learning curve, and it is a great beginner bike. the only reason i did not give five chilis is that is reserved forthe best of the best! good bike for any one trying to get into the sport.

Bike Setup:Pretty much stock except for Deore shifters, Deore brakes,9spd cassette, Giant saddle and other bits and peices.
Bottom Line:I like this bike. It's great for a weekend warrior like me; I don't push it beyond it's limits but it has taken some punishment well. I've changed to a 9 speed setup with Deore parts I already had. Am waiting for the forks (RST Gila SL) to die then i'll change them and I am also going to upgrade to disc brakes. The stock wheels are pretty decent though but I changed the Tektro brakes with Deores (because I had a spare set). Wasn't too keen on the WTB saddle either ( a bit wide) so I replaced it with a Giant saddle i've been using for over a year now. It has a slimmer profile with cutout (like to give the boys some breathing space). GT Avalanche frames are the same from the Avalanche 2.0 through to the Expert from what I remember so you can't go wrong. Upgrade as things wear; i'm sure the frame will outlast the other bits.

Strengths:04' model year not 03'- Great value, better components verses similar priced bikes. Judy TT fork, Alivio derailleur.
Weaknesses:Pedals have a plastic body so they failed in three weeks, saddle is poor, easily ripped and not comfortable for roadies used to italian leather. Grips although tacky, are not nice to those of us whom like beefy handholds.

I haven't ridden a mountain bike since I was 13, but I found this bike vastly superior to any of my old modles. Light and responive, easy to set up, and for a few bucks more you can change out the annoying bits and have a solid light trail or commuter bike.

Favorite Trail:a few... but it´s a secret
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $120.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:This review is only about the frame (that´s the reason for the price...). Frame geometry and quality are awesome. disc ready. Looks cool.
Weaknesses:Paint could be better quality. 6061 Aluminium could be lighter...but not as strong as 7005 GT used few years ago.
Similar Products Used:2001 GT aggressor 3.0 and 2.0 frames (I miss 7005 aluminium, jamis cross country frame (I usually like to upgrade, so I only get the frames)
Bike Setup:By now... psylo fork, Cane creek S2 headset, thomson stem and post, Deore hollowtech and octalink crankset, deore shifters (soon to be changed), avid levers, XT derailleurs, Kore Ti skewers, mavic rims, DT swiss spokes and DT onyx disc hubs, WTB weirewolf 2.5 front and rear tires. On the way... avid mech disc brakes
Bottom Line:If you want a really good GT bike... I suggest get only the frame and build up the rest. Since Pacific cycles owns GT they´ve downgraded almost everything (that´s a shame... maybe oriental philosophy) with exception of the frames (maybe because still using USA desings and engineerign). I´m putting all the abuse possible for a hardtail bike and this still rides sweet (only minor scratches on paint), if I brake this frame... can replace it very easy ;))
Do not expect this frame to take big jumps (for Christ sake.. it´s a hardtail), and if you´re thinking in really moountain biking.. don´t use the original set up of this bike.

Bike Setup:Factory setup, Judy Rock Shox TT, Alivio Rear Derailleur, Acera Front Derailleur
Bottom Line:Before I got this bike I was riding an old steel horse with no shocks, so to no surprise this bike is heaven for me. I love how the fork takes all the beating and I'm impressed of the down shifting ability when climbing on a steep single trak. However when it comes to shift to higher gears the rear derailleur chokes every time. Probably an issue that can be adjusted (I hope...)
Also the pedals don't give you much grip, I keep sliding off.

Strengths:Stiff and tough frame, nice bar and grips. Great foundation.
Weaknesses:Crap components...Alivio and Acera shifters and derailers...crap rims...yucko crankset...heavy sram cassette. Ouch seat.

Right away I noticed I'll have to take a file to the crankset. Some of the teeth have jagged sheared metal sticking out.
Similar Products Used:2001 Avalanche 2.0
Bottom Line:Better than anything you will find at your local K/W-mart.

I'm a bit dissapointed...maybe at my own carelessness when ordering. I own a 2001 Avalanche and when I saw the deal on the 2003 I snatched it up for my son. Not till it arrived did I realize they downgraded everything. Mine is a nine speed with a Deore shifter and LX derailers, a better crankset and rims and Avid brakes. Haven't taken a scale to it yet but I'm guessing it weighs a few pounds more too...because of the heavier cheap parts. This one is going to cost another $200 dollars to bring it up to the same level...maybe more.

Still, better than that 40lb full suspension pretend Mongoose we bought him a few years ago.

Strengths:Extremely solid frame. Clever triple triangle design concept, good tyres, good rear derailleur.
Weaknesses:Frame a little too heavy felt especially in the up hill. Shimano Acera front derailleur is cheap and nasty. Insync fork not as plush as I would have liked but then again this is a lower end bike.
Similar Products Used:Giant Rincon, Mongoose Rockadile.

Bottom Line:A very good bike for the money. The frame is especially good and extremely tough and intelligently designed. Shimano Acera front deraillleur is the bike's major weakness in my opinion. I've had to get it adjusted twice and it still can be a little noisy because the chain rubs against it in certain gears. gera changes are quick and efficient but there is often som pedal lag on the pedal stroke.
InSync Elixxer fork is solid and easily adjustable. I would recommend this bike to anyone who wants a good durable bike and is more of a wekend warrior.

Strengths:For the price, a great tunable front fork, nice tight brakes with a fairly decent rear dereailer. Stock tires are pretty aggressive and this frame is much stronger than several competitors models'. I like how it is reinforced around the stem of the bike. It takes landings pretty well on those steep drops on back trails. V-brakes are nice and work well in those really muddy situations.
Weaknesses:After about 100 miles into the bikes life, I found that the bottom bracket (I believe, I can't take it apart because of warranty issues) is worn out. I'm taking the bike back this weekend to resolve the problem.
