Altitude bearing grunge covers

So rather than just dive right in and risk damaging one of these things by tearing it out the wrong way, anyone have the 411 on the safe way to remove the grunge covers on the Altitude linkage? Oil, grunge on new shock

I've had my Trek Fuel EX 8 for a week now its got 100 miles on it and the shock looks grungy after I ride. Is the oil/grunge in the picture normal for a new Fox Float RPL after a 10 - 20 mile ride?
