Favorite Trail:Trans Pennine Way
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Edinburgh Cycles
Strengths:MPH 3 Brakes are very good. Frame is strong and well painted.
Weaknesses:Suntour front shocks are rubbish, Kenda Tyres are poor
Bike Setup:Maxxis Advantage tyres, Bomber ungraded front shocks with LO, Shimano ATB peddles.
Bottom Line:The Frame and wheels are very strong if a little heavy. I've upgraded the shock and fitted sintered brake pads. The original tyres were poor so i've put Advantages on it. At £400 in 07 for the '07 model it was good value. I ride about 30 miles a week mainly off road.

Favorite Trail:anything that isnt pavement
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:geometry is nice. bottom shelf mtb rather then an atb bike. climbs decent. as said before nice bike for a beginner/ ambitious rider. durability so far, especially the wheels which are heavy but i didnt manage to kill them even when i was a heavier and more abusive rider. sometimes this bike really went through hell - low att drops, couple of crashes, walls of rain, mud and puddles up to the hub et cetera. only a crash made me replace the front rim.
Weaknesses:brakes, brakes, brakes! bottom bracket, shifters, stock saddle soaks up quickly in wet conditions. weight.
Similar Products Used:iguana, yukon, tweaked atx team, gary fisher wahoo, scott aspect 20
Bike Setup:stock except: xtr fd, eggbeaters sl, slr xc flow, dt x455 up front, 2x schwalbe rr 2.25 ss, syntace duraflite crb, syntace f99, cn-hg93 w/sram pl
Bottom Line:this is about the'07 version. rider weight circa 190lbs, mildly abusive. bottom line is this is a decent bike but nothing above it. on the other hand it looks good compared to similar quality products by the competition. good value for money if youre a weekend rider and not going to modify, but with current expirience could find smth better in the same price range (thats why 4 chilis). if you a kilometer eater this could not be enough. bottom bracket went first after ca. 1,5 - 1,7k but i had some grease put in it and it works. rear tire (nevegal) lasted about 2k - its still usable but grip dropped dramatically which doesnt matter in the city but is obvious after couple of km's off-road (perhaps rider weight had smth to do with both ;). front derailleur got crushed by the chain after ca. 3k.
what else? brakes are by far the worst part of this bike and are probably the next in line to the garbage bin(unless ill decide to pinch weight from the rear wheel of course ;)). strengh was decent at the beginning but theese times are long gone. modulation almost doesnt exist, disc keeps hitting the brake i suppose due to the sound, also awfuly loud when wet. the lever got much too soft and when you adjust the dial to give more resistance the disc rubs on the blocks more and more with every turn of the dial.
saddle, as said already, soaks fast and the water keeps coming out through the seams making funny noises.
overall i'm quite happy with it although since i started to ride more i feel this just isnt eneough. will be great for a person that rides mostly in urban but sometimes likes to go off road. possible to buy better for similiar a price but imo there arent many. if you ride mainly in rough terrain youll need to spend more ;)

cheers
P.

Date Reviewed: October 13, 2008
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:local shop
Strengths:It's the '07 model. I got it on a close out offer for 650 euros, which is pretty good for a bike with deore/LX, Rock Shox & hydraulics. Everything's holding up fine after 1500km of all weather riding. Shifting is still smooth, Judy2 fork is good value. Wheels still true despite rocky terrain, only front hub recently needed adjustment. Geometry feels good for climbing, hydroformed tubing looks cool.
Weaknesses:Paint is too sensitive, stock Hayes Sole brakes lack power and feel. Stock tires
Similar Products Used:GT Avalance 3.0, some Cannondale hardtail of similar components level
Bike Setup:stock except Avid Juicy 3, BBB lock on grips, welgo platform pedals, Panaracer Fire XC's
Bottom Line:A very good choice as a first "proper" mtb that will cover beginners/weekend warriors' needs. Heavier than a XC race bike, but considerably cheaper and still good overall quality.

Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:local bikeshop
Strengths:It is actually the '07 model, bought on a closeout offer. Actual price paid was 650 Euros, which was pretty good for a bike with deore/LX, rock shox fork and hydraulic disc brakes. I upgraded the brakes, but everything else is working fine after 1500km and 10 months of use & abuse. The shifting is smooth, Rock Shox Judy2 fork is good considering it's entry level and the hydro formed tubes look cool. Stock wheels are also holding up fine so far despite the rocky terrain. Geometry feels great for climbing.
Weaknesses:Paint job is very sensitive to scratches, Hayes Sole brakes are not strong enough and needed adjustment often. Stock tires were the cheapest kenda (don't remember model name)
Similar Products Used:GT Avalance 3.0, some cannondale hardtail of similar component level.
Bike Setup:Stock except Avid Juicy3 brakes with 180mm front disc, BBB lock on grips, Welgo platform pedals (heavy little b*st*rds), Panaracer Fire XC tires. Thinking about trying spd's
Bottom Line:A very decent "entry level" bike with nice components that will satisfy the hobby rider/weekend warrior. Not as light as an XC race bike, but considerably cheaper. 4 chilis because of the sensitive paintjob.

Favorite Trail:Longmynd
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $757.00
Purchased At:Dave Mellor Cycles
Strengths:Solid frame, great all round spec, Hydraulic discs, 27-speed Deore, Reasonable fork for the price, good looking, great geometry.
Weaknesses:Stock Kenda tyres wear quickly and puncture easily, Heavy for an alu hardtail
Similar Products Used:1995 Raleigh M-Trax Duo-Tech (Titanium/Cromo composite), 2001 Manitou SX-E 80mm, 1999 Shimano LX groupset
Bike Setup:Factory spec
Bottom Line:I chose this based on price vs performance. For £425 its a lot of bike for the money. 27-speed Deore throughout, Hydraulic discs, a good solid frame and an adequate fork. I can't help mentioning that its quite a bit heavier than I expected and noticably heavier than my old bike. This is no lightweight race bike. I think the culprits are the wheels and forks, which are both simple enough to replace, but for now, I can live with it. The tyres are pretty bad though. I've had six punctures in three weeks!! This is a good bike if you are looking for a good value all-rounder for now, with the intention of updating some of components at a later date.
