| | Weaknesses: | Front derailleur (Shimano C050). I think Deore would be better solution. | | Bike Setup: | Stock Rainier Disc 09. I'm going to upgrade it in the end of this season. | | Bottom Line: | I bought it a week ago and i like it very much! It's hard to find a bike with such components for such money. $750.00 | | Purchased At: | http://finishlinebik | | Strengths: | component mix/price is hard to beat
sturdy enough for a clyde, nimble enough for XC | | Weaknesses: | Might be size, but my 19" had a problem pulling the front up on climbs, especially after I converted the Axel to 100mm
Manitou Axel is NOT a very good fork | | Similar Products Used: | too many to list | | Bike Setup: | stock 2003 Giant Rainier. Bikepedia.com has an accurate spec writeup | | Bottom Line: | I hate the quick wear of the Hutchinson Mosquitos. But those tires handle anything (except pavement) flawlessly. They stick to and shed mud better than some DH tires. And they are light. So light that the Slime tubes weren't even noticed, except for the fact that I've never flatted these tires in 5 years. I weigh 220, and got up to 249, and this bike handled it all. The Deore/LX drivetran is superb, the BB7's are as well. Front end came up on climbs, especially after I went to 100 mm travel, but inverting the stem settles that down, and made the whole bike more nimble in the twisties. The Fire X cranks and ISIS bottom bracket seem sturdy enough, altho I am getting a clunk from down there now, after 5 years of punishment from a clyde like me.
I give 4 chilis for overall because of the WEAK fork, and 5 for value. Even with the lame fork, it's still a bargain. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I had to buy this bike to replace my Giant Iguana, because some piece of s**t homeless bum, who chose that lifestyle out of pure laziness, decided he was entitled to my bike more than I was - that's life at the beach, if it's not bolted down some loser will steal it. But anyway my Ranier is guarded by Smith and Wesson now. I like the new shape of the frame, it kinda has a bit of a rugged look. I used to ride the bike alot around the beach area where I live, but when the yankee snowbirds come down during the Winter it gets quite dangerous to ride, so I pretty much just ride off-road these days, but that's the only way to ride when it gets down to it, and what a great off-road bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$670.00 | | Purchased At: | Gaston Bicycle | | Strengths: | 2007 Ranier - Great XC bike. Giant makes a great frame. WTB speed 5 saddle is very comfortable. Had to get the thudbuster! Kenda Blue Groove tires rock for my home track. Plenty of grip on the climbs over roots and rocks. Shimano Deore front and rear derailers work great. Avid shifters are good. | | Weaknesses: | SRAM rear cassette bent from stick getting wedged in it within the first month. Replaced with Shimano. Shifts much smoother now. Avid BB5 brakes take too break in. I have to continually adjust brakes after each ride. Thinking of replacing with Hayes brakes. | | Similar Products Used: | Schwinn | | Bike Setup: | Stock, shimano M 540 pedals, Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost | | Bottom Line: | Riding at the White Water Center along the Catawba river takes top notch equipment. I had to take my old Schwinn in for adjustments about every month. I was finally convenced to spend the money and buy a quality XC bike. Giant exceeded my expectations! I have logged nearly 700 miles in the last year and the bike has held up great. Only two trips to the shop, 1 for rear cassette damage and 1 for routine tune up. Too bad the Rainer is not availabe for 2008. Upgrade the seatpost to a Cane Creek Thudbuster. You won't be sorry! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Brakes take some dialing/breaking in, but once you get the hang of it, they have a great feel and response. Very few complaints, this bike can take a good thrashing and it has provided days of enjoyment. | | Bike Setup: | mostly stock 06 rainier, switched out my brake housing for shift which keeps the housing from compressing, allowing for a better response, serfas rx grips, xpedo mg/cr pedals, avid/mavic hub/hoop upgrade. | | Bottom Line: | Excellent purchase for the price. I'll ride the tires (MTW) until they wear but I'll definitely upgrade to a better piece of rubber. | | Similar Products Used: | none | | Bike Setup: | Stock, except I pulled off all the extraneous plastic from the beginning (chain guard, reflectors, etc.) which all looked like they'd be pretty quick to break off anyway. | | Bottom Line: | Great bike for better than entry level great price. I bought a 2006 (new) to get a price break. It came with toe-clips on the pedals and the plastic was a bit mal-formed and I'm definitely switching out to SPDs. As a near beginner rider I'm really satisfied with the quality of the bike as a huge step up from my prior entry level Mongoose. The brakes are awesome.
This is definitely the bike to buy to move up from general retail junk when you can't spend crazy money on the step up. I'm sure better riders with more money wouldn't be satisfied but I expect to stick with this for a while.
I've been told that Giant makes its own frames and is able to cost-effectively produce a good frame and put on good components to keep the price in a good place--this make sense based upon what I've got in this bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Nice paint and looks. | | Weaknesses: | I've had the bike 2 years now, and I thinks its time for the 2nd crank rebuild. The fork took about 3 months to break in. | | Bike Setup: | 100% stock. | | Bottom Line: | I weight 205 lbs and ride pretty rough, and this bike has really stood up well. Everything about this bike (except for the crank) is at least good. The brakes are are what really makes this a great bike. But all of the other components are great too. If you price each of the components seperatelly, you'll never know how Giant sells this bike for the price it does. The two most common complaints are about the crank and the fork. The crank is definatelly weak. I'm getting ready to rebuild it for the second time in 2 years. The fork wasn't very good at first. It made some funny noises and just felt kind of cheap. But once I got it broke in, it really feels tight and strong now. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The sale price and components made this an unbelievable steal! I've already invested the 150 off back into other gear I needed since my last bike was left to friends to trash. $850.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike Line of Naperville | | Strengths: | Great bike for the money. Welds are nice, and the general construction is decent. LX rear derailleur, Avid mechanicals, and the Marzocchi fork ends up making a nice system for a relatively inexpensive cross country bike. | | Weaknesses: | Crank, crank, and more crank. Lots of flex, and the bike, overall, is rather portly. Oh, and the Hutchinson Mosquitoes are completely useless if you plan on using the bike more than ten times. | | Similar Products Used: | Klein Attitude (far superior, and far more expensive), and the Gary Fisher Tassajara (close second to the Rainier). | | Bike Setup: | Shimano octilink LX cranks have replaced the rather flexi, horrid, stock 4 lb. unit. That raised the bar pretty significantly by making the bike more pleasurable to ride almost instantly. I'm in the process of replacing the stem, bar, seat, and post, but I'm picky and I don't know what I want to use just yet. | | Bottom Line: | Simple - it's an awesome bike for the money, period. Remember, Giant is the largest producer of bicycle frames on the planet, which can go either way in helping someone evaluate their product. Either you'll sit back and realize they've got some decent know-how, or you'll find them to be less desirable due to being mass-produced. Either way, they've proven to me that they're a more than competent manufacturer of bicycles and they can offer a nice package for the dollars spent. The stock crank sucks, but it's probably more noticeable to a rider like me because I weigh 220 pounds. I know the bar and stem is rather heavy, but as others have pointed out - the Rainier isn't a racer so deal with it. If you paid less than 800 dollars for it, consider yourself lucky, put $125.00 towards a crank, and an additional $150 towards other upgrades and feel confident that there isn't a $1300.00 recreational mountain bike out there that'll beat it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The Kona has great parts but a cheap fork (MZ Race). The Fisher Tassajara came in close tie, but I prefer SRAM X.7 to Deore / LX combo. No other bike on the market offers you this much for the price. And for those of you who are worried about the Hayes Sole Disc brakes, Giant includes them on their high end mountain bikes. Their actually more customizable then HFX9 even though they have only 1 piston. But hey, this isn't a DH bike, it's an XC bike and for that purpose, the Soles are more then enough. The frame geometry is great and doesn't leave you "reaching" for the handlebar and is also great for quick sprints and all. SRAM rear der. is smooth shifting. | | Weaknesses: | Stock saddle needs to go. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized Rockhopper, Hardrock, and Kona Blast | | Bike Setup: | 04.5 model stock with upgraded saddle. | | Bottom Line: | This bike is a great deal even if you pay retail for it! $850.00 | | Purchased At: | Dragon Sports | | Bottom Line: | This is my first bike and the previous reviews helped me decide to try the Giant line of bikes. I wanted to get the best bike I could for under $1000. The rainer seems to be one of the best bikes in that price range. The Iguana is basically the same frame with cheaper parts. It is still a good bike for someone who wants to save a couple hundred $$. My plans are to keep this bike a long time so I decided on the bike with better parts. There There seems to be a price gap between the Rainer and the bikes that are 1 step better but it goes back to getting a better frame with cheaper parts. This bike is very light, easy and fun to ride and I recommend it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$775.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance Bike | | Strengths: | My 2004.5 Model has Marzocchi EXC forks that work great for my 185 lbs. Avid disc brakes are solid performers. Rhino rims are strong. SRAM X.7 rear derailleur works smooth and precise. Easton bars and seat post are light and strong. | | Weaknesses: | Not one single complaint yet, and I'm a whiner usually! | | Similar Products Used: | Cannondale F600 | | Bike Setup: | Stock, with Cateye EL500 and Princton Tec Yukon XL headlamp for singletrack night rides. | | Bottom Line: | Hard to beat for the price. Giant did some smart mid-year upgrades for the 2004.5 Ranier. Components like this usually come on $1200+ bikes.
I used to be a downhill racer on a modified K2 (Proflex) 856. I wanted a hardtail for local singletrack and fire road night riding. I've really tried to beat this Ranier up on some choppy downhill rides, just to see how the warrantee goes. Nothing has failed the tests yet. Would highly recommend for anyone's non-competition, recreational use. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$550.00 | | Purchased At: | Preformance bikes | | Strengths: | Solid frame that takes a lot of abuse. And is still not that heavy. Avid 7 mechanical disk brakes are a very good upgrade from rim brakes. | | Weaknesses: | Very light duty cranks, Very heavy components( stem, handle bar, seat post). Oh yeah stock tires suck and wear quite rapidly. | | Similar Products Used: | Gt, Specialized, cannondale | | Bike Setup: | Syntace VRO stem and handlebar system, avid disk brakes, tompson seat post, fizik saddle, LX derailers, Truvativ cranks, mavic rims. Rock shox judy sl u-turn | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is this bike was and is definatly worth the money. The only realy gripes that i have are the light cranks and the heavy components, but what can you really expect for $550?? I really do not like the Judy SL u-turn, even though it has great travel it is not for my style of riding. This winter i will be upgrading the shocks to the SID's (because of weight and lockout) and then this bike will be PERFECT for myself. It is a very solid bike that has a very good overall value.
You should not be disappointed with this bike.

$600.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance | | Strengths: | This bike is really nice for the money you spend but definitely in need of some upgrades. The brakes a great (it's hard to find a bike for this price with mechanical disc), shifts smooth most of the time (unless you are putting a lot of torque on the crank), see to hold up well on crashes and tough drops. | | Weaknesses: | It will skip a little when shift and you don't remember to easy up on the pedals. I don't like the fork. The knob cracked within a month of purchase and I had to find/order new ones. Nothing else has broken. I plan on getting a new fork soon. I tore a hole in the saddle so I will probably get a new one as well. | | Similar Products Used: | Schwinn, Trek 4100, Cannondale | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | I do everything for freestyle to downhill on this bike and it is holding up fine. Just give it some love and you shouldn't have problems. I have bottomed out the fork only once but I weigh 210 pounds. The rims seem very strong, and I have noticed the crank bending a little when I am pushing hard on hills. It is heavy, but not too heavy. After a days of practicing I got my bunnyhop from 4" to about a foot and a half. I have eaten it hard about twice and the saddle is the only thing that didn't handle it so well. I would recommend this to someone who is a moderately good rider and plans on riding a lot. After putting about 15 miles on it every day since I purchased it I have had no serious problems. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$800.00 | | Purchased At: | white rock cycle | | Strengths: | frame, solid all round components, no real standouts, except for the brakes, which are amazing! | | Weaknesses: | rockshox judy SL u-turn ain't that great, but maybe its just because mine needs more oil in it, because its made that squishy-slirpy aerated oil sound from the get go. | | Similar Products Used: | gary fisher pirhana (old and worn out) | | Bike Setup: | standard, except for kona k-nine rock ring, and Jacks*** pedals (which are great flats by the way)
| | Bottom Line: | loads of fun, brakes give you confidance, the fork is sort of sticky, but is always ready to suck up the hits, it's not very smooth, but 115mm is always good to have for those little surprises in the trail.(U-turn is also rather pointless, I'd rather have preload and rebound adjustments, but I gues adjustable travel is the trend) Solid drive train, leaves really nothing to be desired. Giant does a great job of giving you lots of technology for your buck. If your new and you want a bike to learn on, and then get better, go for this one. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$950.00 | | Purchased At: | Criterium | | Strengths: | This bike comes stock with some great components. The Avid disks provide ample stopping power. The easton bars and seat post are solid. The frame has taken a beating and has few dents. The wheelset is very durable. Ive ridden this thing down pikes peak and not a thing has broken. | | Weaknesses: | Major: Fork is good but is a solid candidate for upgrade
Minor: Front chain rings are stamped and a little weak. Upgraded the outer one to a composite and am much happier. | | Similar Products Used: | This is my first MTB | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for chain ring and new teflon coated shifter cables. | | Bottom Line: | Bottom line: I dont think there is a better bike out there for the money. I got into this sport very quickly and I dont feel that I have outgrown this bike. I have been down/up some hard core terrain and this bike has not failed me. I would put this bike next to an NRS any day and not feel intimidated. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$849.00 | | Purchased At: | Wheels in Motion, Dallas, TX | | Strengths: | strong frame, Sram rear derailer, Avid Disc brakes, | | Weaknesses: | Sram shifters, fat saddle, Marzocchi Comp fork, WTB Weirwolf tires, Truvativ crank | | Similar Products Used: | Gary Fisher Tass, Trek 8000, Trek 6700 (disc), Klein Attitude V, Marin Eldridge | | Bike Setup: | pretty much stock, switched the seat with a slimmer rocket V seat, installed slime tubes and bar ends and I shortened the handle bars | | Bottom Line: | Who are we kidding, for the money, there is no better set up (component-wise)!! I used to have a full suspension, since I moved from LA a hardtail is more then sufficient for flat, swampy and muddy (clay-like) Texas. The Sram shifter broke on me during my first ride, the fork is a little loose, the tires don't provide the best traction but other then that this is a pretty rugged and solid bike, I have no other complaints. The bike is light, perfect for jumping and uphills (rare in Northeast Texas). Also, the set-up, front Shimano Deore derailleur with a rear Sram x-7 derailleur works out great. The breaks work well in wet conditions and the rims are pretty rugged, I haven't popped a spoke yet, I used to pop spokes all the time on my old GT.
Basically, if you want a good, solid hard tailbike for a fair price, buy the Rainier. With your left over money, you can always upgrade on the components. Now isn't that a suggestion! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

After test riding riding all 4 bikes it was no decision what so ever. The Giant fit me better than all the others. Didn't realize how comfortable an mtb could be. The Rainier had the best set-up of any of the others in that price range. In addition to the strenghts mentioned earlier, it has Deore deraileurs front and back and they have performed flawlessly so far. I ride a mix of trails, roads and even do a little light commuting--this bike has exceeded all my expectations. Will probably upgrade crank soon, but will leave rest of bike stock for now. The bottom bracket lasted about two years even though it wasnt the best. the frame is my favorite that i have ever ridden on and i put a bike through plenty of tests over and over again. the paint has even held up to all the wrecks with just a few scratches here and there. I was shocked at how expensive bikes have become and was looking for a solid hard tail with decent components. I have never shopped at Performance before but saw this bike on sale and after a quick ride determined it would fit my needs exactly. I'm strange in that I like a long suffering up hill ride over a fast downhill - guess I'm not much of a daredevil. That is why the hardtail appealed to me.
After my first couple real rides I have discovered the tires to be junk, and the crank set to be on the short list of upgradeable items. Overall happy with the bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The rims are durable and almost never warp or bend under stress. All in all, the rainier is one of the best giant hardtails I've ever ridden. | | Weaknesses: | The crank is fairly light duty, it is prompt to malfunction under stress ( requires lots of TLC). The avid mechanical disc brakes are very good buttend to lag when wet. | | Similar Products Used: | - Kona fire mountain -Rocky Mountain trailhead -Klein attitude xv | | Bike Setup: | NONE | | Bottom Line: | It's a great bike for a fairly lightweight rider who rides cross country nad goes into decent tralis once in a while. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The geometry fit's my frame nice and it does what I need it to do so far. For the price I like the components that it comes with. It took one ride to get used to the Sram shifters, but that's no big deal. At 215 lbs., the Marzocchi EXR Comp fork is a little soft and there is next to no adjustment for it. For the price of the bike I don't know if it is worth upgrading the fork. The pedels have to much float so I will upgrade those. Handling is good. The bike is a little on the heavey side though. It's not a racer so I'm not complaining. I don't really notice the weight. I can still hop it around without a problem. Overall it's a good bike for the price and you get a decent component group and would recomend it to anyone that doesn't want to spend over $1000 just yet for bike. Good for someone to to pedel a trail or race some friends in your group. Good overall ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

You will want to upgrade a few things though.... | | Weaknesses: | several: the giant made crank, is garbage. All the rings are fixed together so changing a single chainring is impossible and you have to buy a new set. I purchased the early model that came with the Manitou AXEL. This forks lack of adjustablility and general junkiness constantly held me back. I recommend the Marzocchi MX PRO ETA. The hutchinson tires lasted about a month. The seatpost didn't last much longer. | | Similar Products Used: | cheapie stuff | | Bike Setup: | Finally, I've got it the way I want it: the only original pieces left are the rims/hubs, brakes and front derailer, and frame of course | | Bottom Line: | A good entry level bike, with room to grow. Giant hid the weaknesses, i.e. the crank, but with a little help you can fix the soft spots and end up with a quality machine. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
