Date Reviewed: October 27, 2009
Favorite Trail:Walnut Creek
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $290.00
Purchased At:A-1 Cycling
Strengths:Price (>$300US), upgradable, smooth shifting when LBS tunes it
Weaknesses:Plastic Pedals, stock seat is weak, handle grips slip
Bike Setup:Lock on Grips, Upgraded Seat post, Specialized Seat, MRP Armor Bash Guard (after bending the large chain ring), Welgo MG-1 pedals, WTB Prowler XT Rear, MAXXIS Highroller up front.
Bottom Line:Awesome beginner bike. I purchased this in early 2008 and proceeded to get into XC. Not knowing any better, I beat this thing up on trails it is not designed for...and it still held up! I have broken two chains (due to my stupidity), bent the large chain ring on a log (again, stupid me) and had the seat break off of the stock post.
All of this and I LOVE this bike. I should have hurt myself by now but the bike has saved me from myself. I have slowly upgraded the parts over the past couple of years and every time I do, I fall in love with the bike all over. DO NOT buy this for any sort of DJ or Freeriding, it is NOT designed for it. But if you are new to the MTB world, buy this bike!

Strengths:Sturdy and reliable, like the gear system
Weaknesses:Fork is obtrusive, feels heavy
Similar Products Used:Giant Boulder
Bike Setup:Mostly original, new brakes
Bottom Line:I had the Boulder before this and I actually liked it better. It was the same year, 2009, and it was lighter and had a better turn radius. I realize that the fork is there for better suspension, but I feel off-center with it. Maybe that's just me. But if you're deciding between the Boulder and the SE... the only difference is really the fork, which I in fact did not care for much.

Strengths:- Good for a starter bike
- Shifts well when properly adjusted
Weaknesses:- Plastic pedals break easily
- Needs frequent adjustments to keep shifting smoothly
- Chain rubs frame when on smallest sprocket
- Chain wore out quickly
- Handlebar gradually bent

Bike Setup:Purchased stock, but I have upgraded to 2.4 Kenda Telonix tires, Shimano Deore pedals, WTB Rocket V Race Saddle, Easton EA50 handlebar, Shimano HG-70 chain
Bottom Line:Good for someone who is starting to ride or does more casual riding. I discovered some great but rough trails close to my house shortly after buying this bike, and so far it has held up quite well considering its cost and what I've put it through.

Favorite Trail:Cunningham park

Strengths:Solid feel, sharp looks, price, good starter components
Weaknesses:plastic pedals, no disc brakes, a bit heavy
Similar Products Used:trek 4300, gary fisher tiguan
Bike Setup:changed to steel primo bmx/mtb pedals
Bottom Line:This bike has a solid feel and is built well. It feels good on the trails and has motivated me to ride regularly. I searched for several entry level mountain bikes and none of them could top the Boulder Se. My only complaint is the cheap pedals provided which I destroyed ripping through some trails in Cunningham park. I upgraded them to a set of steel primo pedals and now I am good to go. I do wish the fork had a lockout but for the price I cant complain. Overall I am very pleased with the performance and the Giant has exceeded my expectations.

Favorite Trail:dirt roads behind my house
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Mike's Cycles, Trini
Strengths:Light frame, love the blue/white/black color scheme. Have not done any downhill or very fast riding yet, but the feel of the brakes are fine. Gearing allows me to climb 3-4" curbs easily. The front fork seems fine so far, but appears to have little adjustability. Came with off-road tires (don't know what type yet) that provide great grip in the loose sand on the roads that I drive on behind my house.
Weaknesses:No rear suspension, gear sometimes shifts on its own! No fork suspension boots. Seat does not go low enough to allow my wife to be able to ride it properly :-( I feel like my balls would be crushed at times when riding on a wavy surface.
Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:Can't say offhand, except for stock.
Bottom Line:First bike since my BMX I had 15 years ago! The ride is very enjoyable, and on certain gears, it's effortless to ride. Seems fairly sturdy - as it's taken a couple tumbles already. I can't compare it to other off-road bikes, cause I haven't ridden any others. Will in time to come though. For the surfaces I ride on, I wished it had rear suspension. I may look into the possibility of getting a seat post with suspension in it. The price I paid was alot more that what others paid for it...but I bought it outside the US, so there's shipping and import taxes to add on. I did look at comparable Trek and Fuji bikes at other bike dealers, but this appeared the be the best with the budget I had.

Strengths:Great dirt jumper, very light frame for dirt jumping.
Easy to controll downhilling due to its nice frame. The single best seat you will ever find anywhere period. Probaly the best seat in the world.
Weaknesses:Sometimes bottoms out on drop offs with crappy landings.
Dosnt come with disk brakes, and disk brakes cannot be added to the back olny to the front.

Favorite Trail:OC&E Woods Line State Trail
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $299.00
Purchased At:Hutch's Cycles, Klam
Strengths:A great ride for a great price. The frame is strong and light, and everything works well. It has 28-38-48 gearing, much better for road riding than the usual MTB range.
Weaknesses:Fit - stem and bar are "comfort" angled, and grips are worse than my kid's old garage sale bike. The bike also does better with a tire upgrade (it has the ubiquitous Cheng Shins, but just about everything you can replace them with is better).
Similar Products Used:My x-mart bike - which looked similar, but was a miserable and unresponsive ride.
Bike Setup:Stock, except for new stem, straight bar, bar ends and grips. New rubber on the way.
Bottom Line:I love this bike. After a year hiatus without riding (my last bike was stolen) I bought this for my 4 mile commute to work, thinking it would be one of those "health" type resolutions that would be regretted, then forgotten...but I have loved every mile, and dread ever having to drive to work again. Its a solid bike and a great value, and works better than my old 2k road bike from years back. I put 80 miles a week on, and am building up to some longer weekend rides.

The only bad thing is that I really got this to economize on gas, but now I am almost set on getting a new road bike too - something fast and light for club riding and centuries.

Strengths:Strong frame, I like the paintjob, good starter bike, soft seat
Weaknesses:Brakes are weak, tires are better for road then off-road, fork is real stiff
Bike Setup:07 model with Deore v-brakes
Bottom Line:It was my first real mountain bike and it got me interested in the sport. I use it for around campus riding now. It's a reliable bike that can take a beating. It's only a 7 speed so it would be hard to upgrade the components but the things I would replace would be brakes and the fork. Bottom line is that it's lasted me over a year with minimal care and I can still have fun with it on the trail.

Favorite Trail:None - I'm a commuter.
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $290.00
Purchased At:The Bicycle Entrepreneur
Strengths:Sturdy, relatively cheap and shifting is pretty smooth.
Good for commuting and occasional light off-roading.
Weaknesses:The seat is a bit soft, so it gets uncomfortable after about 10-15km. The bike is also a little heavy, but considering the price there aren't really any weaknesses.
Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:Stock setup, except for the following modifications:
Added bar ends and pedal clips and changed the tyres to semi-slicks.
Bottom Line:This bike represents excellent value for money and is great as a tough, reliable commuter bike. The above modifications help to make it a speedy commuter bike.

This bike is not really suited or intended for off road riding, but it can handle the occasional light off roading. This bike is listed under XC hardtail, but don't use it for XC.

I'd probably rate this bike as a 1-2 chili XC hardtail, but based on how I use it I'll have to give it 4 chilis.

Strengths:Comfortable. This bike is built with comfort in mind. I love the Mega Range when I am dead tired on trails. The bike is solid feeling and can take a beating fairly well. Great for trails and commuting. Very versitle bike. Looks cool.
Weaknesses:The Spinner Grind OS 2 forks. If your ridding on dusty trails, this for is terrible. You might as well not have a suspension fork. However, you can always by Lizzard Skin Fork Boots to keep dust off of the shocks. The fork adjustment doesn't do much either. I also flipped the bike and the steel handlebars bent fairly easily ($15 to replace). Paint Scratches easily.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M40, Iron Horse Maveric 5.5, Fuji Police, Mongoose DX 2.1
Bike Setup:Giant Boulder Se 2007. Lizzard Skin Fork Boots and Chain Stay (BOTH ARE NEEDED!)
Bottom Line:I love this bike. If you are looking for a veristile bike for not a lot of money, this is the bike for you. It performs well on trails and on the pavement. Great beginner bike. I am planning on keeping it a very long time.

Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:Two Wheels
Strengths:Nice light frame that seemed to have no problems taking a beating. Tires and rims weren't to bad either. It's a great bike to reacquaint yourself with trails and cross country riding.
Weaknesses:All around the components were fairly weak and slowly I had to switch everything out. The pedals were a cheap plastic. Disc brake mounts would have been nice, I understand the price point doesn't warrant them as standard equipment but at least some mounts so that an upgrade is possible. The combination brake shifters are a hassle when upgrading the components as well.
Similar Products Used:Brodie Tempyst

Bike Setup:Stock except for. Wellgo Pedals, TRUVATIV XR Mountain Bike Stem and Handle Bar,Avid 7 V Brakes and Grips.
Bottom Line:I purchased this bike thinking that it would be a great starter as it had been some time since riding. I put a lot of abuse on this bike often launching off of anything I could find and I never found an issue with it other than the components but thats not the bikes fault as much as mine I thought this would handle my riding but once I started to ride I realized this bike would never be able to keep up. Would I suggest this bike to anyone absolutely but if you know your going to ride hard then do your self the favor and grab a better ride. I did and I'm now the proud owner of a Brodie Fury.

Weaknesses:It's heavy. The fork offers almost no travel. The components aren't great (but fine for the price). The tires are not great for off road use.

Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Sunrise Cyclery
Strengths:Bullet Proof frame and ability to upgrade any part easily. Very easy to adjust and work on - especially to the learning bike mechanic. This bike will get you in shape quickly.
Weaknesses:Not the best components compared to more expensive models. The fork is bottom of the barrel, but it's better than rigid. Disc brakes would have been nice - but it's not reasonable at this price level.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Marlin, Giant Yukon, Trek 4300
Bike Setup:Replaced the stock tires with Panaracer Fire XC, replaced grips with Oury lockons, Crank Bros eggbeaters c - made huge difference. Deore rear derailleur.
Bottom Line:This is a fantastic bike if you are just getting into biking. At 300.00 or less, it's very affordable and most of the stock components are good enough for a beginner to learn with and replace at the appropriate time. This bike will reward you with the effort you put into it. It feels light compared to department store bikes, other lower end bikes, and will take a lot of abuse before you'll be in the bike shop fixing things.

I do have a few things that I don't like about it, though. One is that the cassette/gearing is a 7 speed, with the mega-range gearing. To upgrade that is some major money if you want a regular and more common 8 or 9 speed. The second is the lack of disc brakes. The V-brakes are great, but if you want to upgrade to disc, it will also cost quite a bit. So if you are looking to buy a bike with the intention of upgrading all the components in the future, you may want to look at the Yukon, Rainier or even the XtC as they will upgrade with your ability better. That will cost a chili.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:Chain Reaction
Strengths:Pretty solid bike for only $200. Comes with nice center ridge type tires that roll good on the road. (b/c you're probably mostly riding on road anywayz) "Mega Range" gearset for going up steep hills while sitting down, and not being in a rush.
Weaknesses:It's still a $200 bike, what are you expecting out of it? "Mega range" gear does nothing but mess you up if you're actually using it as a serious mountain bike. Tires are not for serious off road use.
Similar Products Used:Giant XTC, Identiti 666, and other various high end bikes. (not that you would be looking at any of them if you're looking at spending $200)
Bike Setup:Stock. Eventually bought new rynolite rims when I cased a rock jump 'n' bent the old one to poop. (not that they were ever intended for that use) Now I'm buying/selling/trading various parts to build a nice townie single speed bike.
Bottom Line:If you're looking to spend $200, if you're wanting a campus/around town bike, if you're new to the mountain bike world and don't want to blow your wad just yet, or if you just want to see what it looks like to have trees all around you, no cars honking at you, fresh air... this is a quite solid bike for the money. But if you're really interested in getting into mountain biking, be warned! This bike will get you far enough to get hooked and within months, decide to get something 5x more expensive, maby hit up some races, start hanging out at the local bike shop, make new friends... it's a slippery slope I tell you. But hey, at least you could still build up a nice townie bike with your old Boulder SE frame ;)

Strengths:Sale-Price$$. A very attractive bike with a smooth ride.
Weaknesses:The "Giant" brand quick releases are cheap.
Similar Products Used:GT Outpost 16"., Specialized Hardrock 21".
Bike Setup:19" Frame W/front shock. Blue-silver,SE black trim.
Bottom Line:A pretty bike for getting around town or hittn' up the woody shortcuts for fun. It is listed as recreational, but is handln' a daily beating with a smile. Get some bar-ends, switch out the quick releases, buy a lock ...get it muddy!!
