Bottom Line:
This bike is extremely easy to do tricks on. Spinning is like a breeze and for the trials riders out there i'd suggest to upgrading to hyduralic disc brakes is a must. Keep an eye on the free riding hub and the crank screws they like to come loose. The bike is heavy because of the solid steal bar joining the crank shaft but it is really easy to pro hop at least 3 feet. This bike is good for beginners and experienced riders. This bike is better for street more than for dirt jumps because of the deraiuler. unless you shorten your chain by one or two links.

Stones get kicked up into the front der from the rear tire and jam the der. I put sponge rubber to fill the void in the deraileur and the cam mechanism and this works. The front der is too close to the rear tire when using knobbies so it rubs. I machined a bit from the front of the der clamp - which lets the der sit slightly lower. this helps, but a road type der would have more clearance and not be subject to interference from stones. I can see why for 2008 they have dropped the front der from the model.
I'm not fond of the geometry - the bike is just too small for me ( 5' 10" ) - but it fits my wife ok ( 5' 2"), and I bought it for her ( I can't figure out how the P/O rode it, let alone raced it unsuccessfully for a season - he was 6' ).
The gears/deraileurs and shifters just don't shift as smoothly as my very old Bianchi dirt bike ( like butter ) - despite having spent most of a day tuning and adjusting and replacing what was broken or bent (with the same stock parts).
Also - not really impressed with the mechanical discs. My sons department store bike ( a rocky mountain - not bad kit.. ) has very severe discs that will put you over the bars when applied hard. The STP2 - well, its disc brakes are almost as good as the cantilever brakes on my aging Bianchi, but not quite.
I tightened the Marzocchi MZ II forks to max preload and they seem acceptable - but a bit flexible - most noticeable when applying the brakes.
I should say that we bought it for her to do cross country with - It may prove to work out, but seems better suited to trick riding.
Despite all this - the frame survived the P/O unharmed so must be quite strong. It feels like a high quality ride when you're not trying to shift or brake - but cramped for a guy my size - and I'm not a big guy.
Similar Products Used:
Bianchi dirt bike.
Bike Setup:
stock with a few tweaks.
Bottom Line:
Doesn't seem well thought out ( front DER mostly - you can fix that with some creativity - but should you have to? ).
Frame must be strong - since it survived the P/O unharmed - but the stock components just don't work well together ( clunky shifting / only adequate braking from mech. discs ).
Handling seems high quality, but geometry is probably better suited to the smaller rider.

Frame is strong, rims are strong (rhyno lites). Its cheap to buy. Cranks good.
Weaknesses:
I own the small frame which is 13.5 inch. It often feels like a bmx because it is so small... however maybe im just wrong and im not sure what its eant to feel like. Most of the components are bad. The front hub is Quick Release so you cant upgrade to decent forks because decent forks arent Quick Release. You need to buy a whole new wheel set just to upgrade forks (unless you just get front rim but that would look weird). The brakes (hayes GX2 Mechanicals) really suck and have no stopping power at all. Bottom Bracket often creaks. Handle bars and stem arent good. The stem isnt even a brand. The seat is not good for jumps because its so skinny and small. Hubs suck they arent sealed. So bearing wear out quickly and become rough. CHAIN SUCK!!! I hate chain suck, its where your chain gets sucked up with the chain ring and gets jammed between the frame and sprocket/crank. It munches up my frame and bends the chain as well as the sprocket! It just stuffs everthing up!!!! So i reccomend getting a chain guide straight away.
The front derueiluer that controls the front chain rings is so close to touvhing the rear tyre that i cant put a knobbly on because they will make contact! Thats just another reason to convert to Single Speed on the front and chain guide.
The gears suck the slip and miss and wear out fast (convert!).
Similar Products Used:
P3 and keewee progressor
Bike Setup:
I have upgraded= Handle Bars, Stem, Rims/hubs, Fork, seat, and converted to single speed. Now i need Hydrolic brakes. I have spent alot of money on this bike, all added up i could have bought a brand new Specialized P3 With all these components but better!!!
Bottom Line:
If your not looking to upgrade from stock components and have ridden the bike and you like the feel of it then this is a good bike to consider.
Other wise it simply costs to much to upgrade despite what people say about it being a good bike to upgrade.

Great frame (strength & geometry), cranks, fork is ok for med - light freeride, stock tires are great for street
Weaknesses:
Grips, Pedals, Brakes
Similar Products Used:
Cannondale Chase
Bike Setup:
Mostly stock, replaced stock grips with Specalized S-Works grips, replaced stock pedals with Haro platforms, which aren't great, but way better than the stock ones. Giant swapped some Alexrims DM24's in place of the Rhyno Lite's, and I can't say I'm happy with them. Don't know if they were a bad build, or I just really suck, but the rear wheel constantly needs to be trued.
Bottom Line:
Great bike - I love it, in spite of some of the cheap parts. My first "real" upgrade will be to new wheelsets (Rhyno Lites) and disc brakes (BB5). Fork is great with right preload for medium to light freeride. A lot of bike for the money, especially compared to the STP 1. Not perfect, but still a pretty good buy for the price. I'd reccomend it for anyone wanting to get into DJ and freeride, but still has a close budget.

Strengths:
Well first of all this is the one main review you want to read. Starting off with the frame. the frame is one of the best frame i have seen in along time. Jeff Lenosky and Wayne Gross are both pro riders and they have this frame. that automatically tells you something is good about that frame. this is not a downhill bike at all. dont listen to some of the other reviews that say its good for dh because its not. so dont buy this bike for downhill unless you like going to hospitals. Dont get me wrong you may still ride down a mountain and have fun with your buddys that all have downhill bikes. but this bike is made for dirt jumping and urban riding. this bike is super light and super munoverable. you may manual and do 360s and bunny hops. almost any cool move you can think of. this bike is just plain fun. you can ride trails, dirt jumping, urban. the name tells it all. STP= street, trails, parks.duh WOW this bike gives you alot of confidence.
Weaknesses:
now before you start having high expetations about this bikes component you must remember that this bike is a 600$ dollar bike so really it packs as much components as it can. the main things you will want to change is the..... FORK-the Marzocchi MZ comp is not very good. you should use it untill its blown up or old and not working good. after it dies get a new fork. Brakes-they work suprisingly well but i would sugest getin some discs breaks because the breaks wear out eventually. Rims-Sun Rhyno LItes work decent but will need to be trued after a few months of riding. there are many beter rims thoughe Tires-nice for street ONLY!! if your going trail riding you MUST get new tires. Pedals-alright but should change because they dont have much grips. Every thing else are just cheap parts but work, but you should probally upgrade if any thing breaks.
Similar Products Used:

frame is bombproof, as is the wheelset. the rhyno lites are nigh on indestructible. i learned to dirt jump on this thing, and cased many a landing/stair/what-have-you, and havn't had to true them once.
Weaknesses:
nothing that wasn't expected. component spec (alivio, giant brand stem, etc) isn't the greatest, but after a season of collegeiate slalom and downhill racing, everything is still operating. the only thing that has broken on this bike was my stem, because i spaced out and over-tightened the nut and stripped out the threads. =\
Similar Products Used:
none. test rode a specialized p-bike, but decided it was too heavy and not as well suited for racing slalom. prior to this, i had only ridden a friends stp, and my jamis xc bike.
Bike Setup:
stock, though a new stem is on the way. eventually upgrading to new hubs and disc brakes, as well as a new fork and a chainguide, when money allows.
Bottom Line:
the bike preforms excellently. really a jack of all trades, you could make this frame do anything. I use it for slalom and downhill in the fall, racing for the UF mtb team. the rest of the year it's dirt jumping and attempts at urban, and i havn't managed to break the bike, only myself (my shins will attest to this fact). a solid deal, especially for someone just looking to get into the freeride or dirt-jump aspect of mountain biking.

great frame, light

brakes could be better, rims dent easy, the gaps in the brake cables get clogged, front ring too small, fork

A great bike for beginners. the nz one has Hayes mech discs wich could be better. Ive competed in a couple of XC races on it and it did the job, pretty good for downhill too. Its a great looking bike and fun to ride

Bike Setup:
stock but hope to buy a marzochi dirt jumper 3 fork
Bottom Line:
this is a great bike value wise and the only thing that i would do to it is buy a new fork and maybe a rear derailer. I don't mind the stock vees but some would prob buy disc brakes. all in all if like street djs trails and even a little xc it is a great bike for a great price and with an upgrade or 2 you'll be ready to rip

can't beat the frame. its got super good geometry so manuals are a breeze. its light...easy to hop and through around.the components are great for what you pay for the bike. plus half the fun is upgrading
Weaknesses:
fork are not to bad..they will hold up..but you will want to upgrade.

Bottom Line:
there isn't much you can say except this bike is amazing...ive did some crazy things and just kept on rollin.upgrade the fork..and mabey a new deraileur and you will be set for life. you shouldent buy this bike if ur not going to ride it hard. if u do, you are just mistreating the bike and looking like a poser. this bike needs someone who needs it.

Frame is solid. Great Trials Geo. what I mean is the super short chainstays (16) as opposed to others being around 17 in.
Weaknesses:
I currently have two of these bikes. on the first ones the rims needed to be trued almost everyweek. perhaps this is a bad wheelset becuase the same rims on my trials set up bike were pretty decent. I ditched both brakes and upgraddd to a maggie hs33 on the back and a maggie julie on the front. other than some other minor changes like bars, stem and derailures (which i changed only for personal feel) the bike is wonderfull.

bottom line, even stock this bike rocks. its a superb bike for the 600 dollars you will pay for it. a few simple upgrades and you have one hell of a bike.
