Strengths:mad-figgin' light frame...
Weaknesses:scratches easily
Similar Products Used:'98 fisher joshua x1
Bike Setup:judy race; mostly xtr or high-end stuff - I bought some dude's project bike so I can only speak for the frame...
Bottom Line:This frame is so light and stiff and strong and beautiful and fast... the heavy hydracoil fork that's on mine makes the dang thing so front-heavy that big-air means dirt sandwich -- don't throw some heavy coil fork on it; buy it stock or give her an SID and you will be in heaven... She may be a lightening bolt but she's not for everyone - only those who want a screaming-fast race ready bike should apply. This hardtail is stiff and uncompromising...

Price Paid: $180.00
Purchased At:paradise creek
Strengths:first off i should say that i bought this as a frame only option, and built the bike from the ground up. it's definetely light...has cool looking paint job too
Weaknesses:this frame creakes and snaps at me constantly. May be because I didn't use an integrated headset, but sound seems to be coming from all areas (cranks, headset, seatpost, etc.)
Similar Products Used:first high class hardtail i've owned. I generally ride my fsr with marzocchi mcr, sun mammoth rims, etc...
Bike Setup:marzocchi z3 qr 20, sun mammoth rims, race face stem and seat post, prodigy bars, oury grips, xt lx drivetrain, etc...
Bottom Line:wasn't really the frame I wanted to buy, because I do a lot of trials riding on it. I'm not much for cross country, but that seems to be what this frame is suited best for. THe price was right, and I'm a tall guy who needs a big frame (21.5"), so i had to settle with this frame. Now i can understand what many of you are saying about the frame being weak, for mine creakes constantly, and it does feel and sound like there's nothing under you, but I have not had any problems with the durability aspects of this frame so far. of course I have a zocchi on front that soaks up a lot of the hits, and the mammoth rims are so strong that little of the stress gets to the frame. still, I have my doubts...I weigh a lot, and only time will tell if this frame will hold up. still, I have a hard time believeing you guys who say that you can bend the frame with your fingers. I take five foot drops and ride trials, and everynow and then I take this bike out for a downhill run as well. If I haven't broke this frame yet, with my 230 lb. fat ass, then I see no reason why anyone else would either. maybe you guys need to learn how to work on your bikes and keep up on maintanence. anyhow, this frame has satisfied me so far, at least until i get the cash to buy a nice dual slalom frame. value was exceptional, overall rating is high as well (with the exception of the creaks, which I've learned to live with).

20.5 pounds total
Bottom Line:I haven't been on it long, but some hard rides in the last few weeks, now that trails are opening have made me happy. Some good long rides around Fruita; rocky rough stuff. No durability issues so far. Picked up the frame for $325 including shipping from Frankford bike off the web. Comes with headtube adapters if you want to use a non integrated headset.

Hey, it's a 3 pound frame for fast xc riding/racing. if you're doing urban hardcore or trials stuff, of course you'll probably f*%k up your frame. For such a light frame, it's only going to take so much. my first aluminum frame, so the jury is still out. way stiff compared to my ti or steel bikes.

5 on value, since i only bought the frame, then built it up. 4 on overall, because i've only been on it for a little while.

if you are looking for a fast, stiff xc ride/racer, and not going for big huge stunts, go for it!

Strengths:great value, Brakes work awsome once adjusted correctly. In contradiction to other reviews, I ride about 50 mi. a week and have never had a prob w/ frnt. derailur or the Mavic rims. Also I am not easy on the bike, its almost got as many scratches as paint left on the frame.
Weaknesses:This bike has more snap crackles and pops than a bowl of rice crispies. The stock BB must be replaced. I have come to the conclusion it's the frame and have gotten used to it talking to me during our rides.
Similar Products Used:older Klein Rascal, GT Avalanch (very solid though a little heavier.)

Bottom Line:This bike is a great value. It weighs in at 25 w/ discs which is lighter than competitively priced models. Personaly I wish I would have saved a little more money and gotten a more solid bike. I have never felt like I got ripped of at this price.

Strengths:Frameset, Wheelset, BRAKES, BRAKES, BRAKES, BRAKES!
Weaknesses:Stock Saddle, Grips, Prodigy Post, Stem, Bars(Based on weight)
Similar Products Used:None, but I did have a 1994 Trek Singletrack with a true temper frame, does that count for anything? Didn't think so.
Bike Setup:Steock except for Pedro's grips, Selle Italia Tri-metric flight in black and yellow, shockboard fenders f/r when it's nasty out.
Bottom Line:This is the 2001 model, first off, but there isn't a line on the site for it yet so I'll lump this in with the reviews for the 2000's. All I can say is the bike is amazing!! First off, I'[m new to nine-speed, but I have to say I am a convert. Here in the Northwest, you have to climb if you want to ride, and this bike is ready to climb all day if that's what you need to do, both from the seating position, as well as a very smooth rolling hutchinson tire set, and excellent acceleration from the bike itself. I attribute that to the ultra light frame. The bike feels lighter than it's 26.5lbs, but it is also about two pounds lighter than the rig it replaced, so I'm happy with it no matter what right now. Now, I have only had the bike for a week or so now, but this morning at eight a.m. we went out and field tested my new ride at full tilt through Tiger Mtn's technical singletrack. Let me just tell you, if you are looking for a performance enhancement for your new bike, look no further. The brakes are just what I have been dreaming of for years, they run silent- (anyone who tells you otherwise had a cross eyed monkey install thier brakes!), and are so powerful that you will never find yourself wishing for more brake ever again. You can go faster, brake later, and with more controllability than any v-brakes ever made, believe it. These things are the sliced bread people tell you they are, I can't speak for the other discs out there , but Hayes are certainly all if not more than they are cracked up to be. The wheelset is dope as hell, and you know I like the black spokes! So far, I haven't put a drop of air into them, and I'm still waiting to see them leak. Naysayers for tubeless won't find a sympathetic ear here. Only the race season this year will tell for sure though. Overall, I expect a lot of reliability out of this bike, and will be rolling up to like thirty starts this year, aside from training and commuting, so I will let you all know if anything changes. For now though, this is a heck of a lot of bang for the buck, I say that both the tubeless wheelset and the disc brakes make this bike much more than the sum of it's parts. Check it out if you can, and if you ride in the wet, you want these brakes, trust me!

Strengths:Light and fast, SID shocks, Raceface Crankset, Time pedals, Hayes brakes (need I say more..)
Weaknesses:cheapo creaky seatpost, rear derailleur hits frame even with a lizard skin
Similar Products Used:Giant Rincon
Bike Setup:Standard apart from running longer travel SID 100s and Hutchinson Python Gold tyres.
Bottom Line:This bike is fantastic. I've heard a lot of complaints about the frame being to weak, prone to dents, etc.. and yes mine does have a few dings under the BB, but it's super light so there must be a trade-off. I've raced my bike for a half a season now and no problems yet.. even the reasonable cheap LX BB has given no worries at all. The Time pedals have been great in the mud (million times better than my crappy old SPD's) and the Hutchinson rubber makes this bike roll even faster. The extra wide handle bars offset the longer travel forks so even for XC racing the new geometry is good. Bottom Line - Get this bike if you want a fast, value for money hardtail, forget this bike if you have the urge to spend lots of cash. This bike rocks!!!

Price Paid: $1250.00
Purchased At:Aggieland Cycling
Strengths:Only aluminum frame lighter is much more expensive Schwinn Homegrown, Hayes H.Discs could stop a Trane, SID XC, good component mix, Time pedals a blessing in the mud!
Weaknesses:Rear Derailleur hits chainstay in high gears, chain chips paint even through LizSkin, chaepo LX BB caused massive crank creaking(upgraded to XT when LX failed, rides much quieter and smoother), Deore shifters on a $1500 bike?(haven't had the shifting and adjustment problems that my buddy with the XT's has had, though), low bottom bracket height, durability of superlight alum. frame a concern
Similar Products Used:1996 Raleigh M50 (campus cruiser)
Bike Setup:All stock except Lizard Skin on chainstay
Bottom Line:I would buy this bike all over again. I have loved every second of riding this bike, except falling over before clipping out of my Times. If you are in the market, this is a fast, comfortable, billy-goat of a bike. I routinely bottom my SID, but everything is still running true. Contrary to common experience, I have yet to dent my frame despite falling over directly on a 2'-round rock. Hayes brakes keep me stopping even in the sickest of mud and slop, if they are a little noisy(who cares?) Definitely not a freeride/downhill bike, but you can't beat it for twisty singletrack. Get one, but don't pay MSRP.

Weaknesses:heavy handlebars, seatpost and stem
Similar Products Used:1999 Sugar 3
Bike Setup:EA 50 Riser bars, and Michelin Wildgripper Tires
Bottom Line:I wanted a hard-tail, as a second bike to my Sugar 3, to use on shorter rides and because I like the acceleration and climbing of hard-tails. With the Wildgripper tires, the Giant is glued to the turns and handles better than my Sugar, which is a very high complement! The brakes are powerful and you get incredible acceleration and super confidident handling from the stiff frame. The bike has a few cheezy parts on it, but that is to keep the price down. This bike begs you to ride it FAST!! I turned into a speed-freak on my first ride on it and crashed as a result!
I HIGHLY reccomend this bike. Flame-on...5 turds!

Weaknesses:Frame does ding easily, Time pedals are great but hard to get used to. LX/XT needs upgraded to make the most of this bike. WTB tires are terrible for desert riding. Disc brakes also don't like the dust but work great if you don't mind some ringing.

Weaknesses:Check bearing adjustments.
Caliper on rear not shimmed for optimal adjustment range.
Mavis 223 rims are racing rims and quite fragile.
Check trueness and spokes often.
Bottom Line:This is an update to a previous post.
Since then I managed to tweek my rear rim, the Mavic 223 disc. It broke at the weld which I interpreted to be a defect. After consulting my LBS they are confident I hit a rock at the worst spot on the rime which caused the weld to crack. Since there is a shim inside I an going to continue to ride on it.
I also noticed that the rear axle was hard to turn. After taking it apart, I found that the lock knuts were tightened incorrecly which put side pressure on the cartidge bearings.
I adjusted and made sure that the axle protruded out equally on both sides with no load against the bearings.
When I installed the wheel, now my Disc brakes were out of alignment. I could not get the horizontal adjustment necessary to center the disc. I had to add washers between the bike frame and caliper mount.

Bottom Line:Nice ride for the cash. what really swayed me was the combo of the SID fork, flawless Time pedals, excellent Hayes disc brakes, and the super light frame to make up for the added weight of the discs. This is somewhat of a step-up bike for me in that i really dont expect the frame to last much more than next season. I already have multiple dents in my down tube from rocks being thrown up by the front tire (some of which are very large). Giant had to sacrifice some durability for the reduced weight. After next season i hope to junk the frame and put the parts on a lightspeed!

Weaknesses:Ok, found one, minor one though:

* bottom bracket/crank is quite low, if you do a lot of technical rides on narrow trails with lots of roots and rocks gotta be careful not to hit them.
Bike Setup:stock, lizard skin got added to the frame - otherwise chain would destroy the paint. desided against the boots for the fork, on the next shock service getting the shower caps added instead.

Weaknesses:bottom bracket, seat post

Bike Setup:Stock: Hayes hydros, SID XC, Ya Know the stuff it came with.
Bottom Line:Okay, the handle bars seemed wide at first, but after my first real ride they were great in climbing. The bottom bracket was not tightened properly and was creaking like a big dog after 14 miles of fun, but that has more to do with the lbs assembly and not the bike. Hayes brakes rule, ya got to set 'em up a little, make sure stuff is centered. Takes maybe 5 minutes. The tires were good, they packed up with good Capitol Forest mud, but still provided traction. Oh, if anything was real sucky it is the grips. My hand were numbed out bad after about a mile. That is minor stuff people. I looked at a GT avalanche for $900, and thought for $200 more this was a much better deal. Don't overlook this bike , I ride mostly in Capitol Forest here in Washington State, and climbing is a big deal. This baby climbs great, and descends great.

Giant sells a great bike for the components offered & the price. The bike is a great racing bike, light & handles just as a good HT should, responsive & a great climber (as long as you are a good climber). Only down side is the sound of debris hitting the frame as it sounds like your riding a beer can. No problems w/ and dents or dings. Frame is sturdy & strong. The bike is great and is worth every dollar you spend for it. However upon buying the bike try to get a discount for some additonal parts; such as, a riser bar, upgraded rims (if you ride agro trails like me), XT or XTR front.

I have crashed a few times at high speed and watched the bike bounce, flip and slam into rocks & trees. I have not had any of the problems previously described, I just pick it up and keep on riding. * Shifters is the only part I'm not crazy about, wish it would come with RapidFire for quicker shifting (with Deore you have to click one gear at a time, and it's not very convenient at a sudden hill)
Similar Products Used:Trek 7000 (1996 model)
Bike Setup:Stock. (I will add boots for the shock, it's a shame rockshox overlooked this detail)
Bottom Line:Nothing comes close in quality at this price. No need to whine about LX front dir (only $30 to upgrade to XT anyway, which is not necessary, I've used Deore front dir and even that one broke only after 4 years), or about no-name seatpost - who gives a crap??? Only 2 things concern me:

- RockShox SID XC does not come with boots, and I couldn't find any in my local shops. Will also have to buy a pump to adjust air in the shock ($30)
- Disk breaks work awesome, but look rather fragile, wonder what can happen to them in case of a crash?

Other then that the bike is great. I've been shopping for it for over 6 months and finally found the price I was willing to pay, so take your time and look around! I'm giving this bike highest rating now, but will update if my opinion will change.

Bottom Line:Excellent value. The hayes brakes are great. The titec bar was way too wide and was remedied by taking an inch off of each side. I put on the rock shox seat post, so mine is about 27 pounds. You aren't going to get a better value for 1400 bucks. I had the xtc se2 before this and the frame was rock solid, as is this one. If it weren't for the lx front derailler that caused me problems in my first race, it would definitely get 5 flamers instead of 4 for overall.

Bottom Line:For the money, there just ain't anything out there that can come even close for getting this much bang for your buck. This bike climbs really well. All the weakpoints can be easily upgraded to something much nicer for not too much dough. I finally took this bike on my favorite trail which is pretty intense and technical. I would have to say if I were on anything lesser, my life would have been hell, the trail was ridiculously muddy(I know I shouldn't be riding in those conditions, but I had to) and the bike held up well, but I did have a problem with the front derailer getting knocked out of alignment and having my chain rub against it while on my ride. Also, my cleats got a messed up but that was my fault, add to that that you don't want to stop seeing as how the mosquitos there are on speed, that makes life pretty miserable, but this can be corrected by making sure that your bike is nicely tuned before you ride. The disc breaks were a godsend, really helps out in muddy conditions and the SID fork is by far the best fork I have ever used, plush, and sucks up every hit. I would say the fork and the breakes alone make this bike worth ever penny. This is the new standard for quality and componentry for the price. Definately a must by for a rider looking for a medium to high end bike but doesn't have the finances of an internet start-up millionaire.

Bottom Line:This is a review for the replacement frame I received from GIANT after a two week wait. First thing that pissed me off was the replacement frame has ugly and useless V brake bosses on the seatstays. I guess this is the frame GIANT markets to suckers building their own bike - complete bikes don't have the bosses. Second, while putting the bike back together, the LH BB cup (Shimano UN72)started fine, went halfway in, and seized. Threads screwed. Found a cup from a LX BB (plastic) and rammed it in - basically self-tapped through the mess. I'll be ok as long as it doesn't loosen up, or have to take out the cup for some reason.

I should really have sent this supercrap back to GIANT for frame no. 3, but all I want to do is ride, save my pennies this winter, and move the components to a new frame next spring. Santa Cruz Chameleon looks good as a replacement.

Stress fracture on the underside, about 3 in. forward of seat tube. After only about 350km of chicksh*t XC race courses! This frame blows. Too fragile even for a race bike. Bottom Line:I've had this bike for about 2 weeks and have only missed one day of riding. I actually took it on a 20 mile road ride, just so I could be on it. My Hayes broke in extremely well and make me very happy. One thing I didn't expect was how much they help overall bike handling and control on tight, tchnical trails. The SID XC is great. I never notice the front end of my bike doing anything weird and it tracks well. The problems I have with the bike are minor. Excessive chainslap destroyed the stock chainstay protector and forced me to put a lizard skin protector on. The cassette and chain comprimise the drivetrain, causing the chain to skip occaisionally. Mostly it happens when I shift under full power, which I shouldn't do anyway. The Titec stem and bar are heavy and had to go, along with the no name seatpost, which was fairly heavy as well. These upgrades are not a big deal and you can save money if you take care of them at the dealer when you buy the bike. I work at a Giant dealer (gotta love the pro-deal) and the bike sells itself. There's not a better deal out there. I'd give it about 30 burning things for value and 4.75 overall in stock form.

GIANT sent a new frame that is being installed for me this week. LBS called me and told me that a new frame had shown up and to bring it in for the exchange. Hopefully my frame was a fluke in the batch of frames. You can probably drop a pound+ by upgrading wheels and going with less aggressive tires. Another problem is the ridiculously wide bar, which I'll swap out for the Crowbar race when my bike gets here later this week. Overall, I can't wait for it to get here because it kicks ass. Originally, I wanted the MCM SE1, but was told that Giant has sold out and won't be making anymore. Not to worry, as the XTC is still an incredible bike and an incredible deal. If you're thinking about a great bike with hydraulic brakes, definitely give this one a spin. SID shock feels great too.
After reading here about some folks having frame denting problems, I had some concerns before I purchased my Giant. I spoke with my LBS who forwarded my concerns to Giant. Giant says, if there have been any cases of frames being dented "merely by squeezing with your fingers," they haven't been reported to Giant. Bottom Line:Bought this bike from the local shop, took it out of the packing crate and put it together myself. Almost mandatory to get rid of the seatpost, shifters, bar and bottom bracket - lightened the bike about a pound with stronger parts for less than $300.

This is a decent sport class racing bike, but it's no trail bike. The bottom bracket height is almost two inches lower than my other rides, so in real technical terrain your chainrings are gonna eat it big time. Nobody should be buying a hardtail for trails these days anyway - full sus offers too many advantages to pass up. Hayes brakes are nice, but offer no advantage over V's for short races, and are way heavier, so expert/elite riders won't like this bike. Jury is still out on the SID XC - nice adjustability, but it flexes enough that disc caliper/disc rotor orientation changes after rough downhills, causing your carefully adjusted, no drag front brake to drag.

Bike climbs and accelerates well with its stiff frame, but it's a bit harsh for extended saddle time. Anybody who's denting the tubes should look at their riding, 'cause this frame is more than strong enough for the intended use. It ain't a freeride machine! Buy the right bike!

I've only had it a week, but I've been on it every day and am waaaaay happy with the performance. Nice and stiff, but not teeth rattling like most light aluminum bikes.

The oversized Cane Creek headset completely exceeded my expectations. I'd never really ridden with a quality headset b4 and was suprised at how smooth and agile it makes the bike handle. Besides, it looks really cool and the chi-chi value is high.

Bottom Line:The XTC SE1 is not really set up to be a purebread racing bike due its weight (26.5 lbs with pedals, as shipped). This is partially due to the disk brakes. Another problem was that it took forever to get this bike! It was ordered in late November and didn't arrive until February. I expected having it in 1-2 weeks as the salesperson said.

Overall, the 2000 XTC SE1 is a mean hardtail. The bike always gets a lot of compliments on the trail. As advertised, the Hayes brakes work extremely well, but it seems like if you hit a rock the wrong way the entire disk brake hanger on the rear chainstay would just break off and you'd be done. Hopefully its a lot stronger then it looks, but should this hanger break, it would impossible to revert the bike to conventional breaks and I'm not sure this would be covered under warranty. Too bad the SE1 is not offered in a version with the more practial regular brakes.

The SID shock seems a little light on rough rooted/rocky downhills at high speed, but on the other hand, the bike seems to have excellent control on both climbing and technical sections (especially on drops). The shock has saved my rear several times when I needed it, so I won't be too critical.

All in all, the bike is an excellent value and I'm o.k.with it. By the way, I think the list price is $1225 (what I paid and what is posted on the Giant website) and not $1400 as MTB Review lists it.

I'm taking away 1 chili due to the weight and brake hanger issues.
