Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
This bike is amazing. Way tougher than I'll ever be, I've gone over the handlebars and/or dumped it a thousand times -- I'VE gotten torn up, the bike's been fine; adjust this and that and back on my way, I'm bleeding and moaning but the bike is jamming. Replaced the Formula brakes with Avid BB7's -- you hit the skids, these brakes stop you, Now. (I was able to get almost nine years out of the Formula brakes, CONSTANT ADJUSTMENTS and considerable danger, truth be told; the last year with them was, um, interesting.) Rebuilt the bike this year -- the brakes, new cassette, new crankset, chain (duh), new cables, yet another set of tires. I did not replace the rear derailleur but I'm going to when I catch one on sale somwwheres. All of this was deferred maintainance, btw -- those components held out for NINE YEARS. And now it's good for another nine years, probably. I love this bike. Buy a Giant bike, have a happy life.

For what I paid, this is one hell of a bike!I've been riding it for going on 7 years now,and just buy upgraded parts as I wear stuff out. When I first got it,It developed a creaking in the bottom bracket, but I took it back to the shop, and whatever they did,it has never done it again.Recently,my home was desroyed by a tornado,my bike was hanging on the front porch, along side my son's BMX bike, long story short,I found it about 100 yards away, with not even a tweaked wheel or anything...both wheels on my son's bike where taco'd...figure that one out!All in all this has been a great bike for the money, and would recommend it to anyone,as long as they ride it as it was intended...not a downhill or freeride bike!

This is my first MTB and I must say prior to its purchase I looked at various bikes in the 500-1000 range, given its stock setup it is the best bang for the buck. One key for me was the disc brakes (standard), yeah they squeak but you can count on them to slow you down in a hurry. This bike can also take a beating as can be attested by my many falls being a relatively new to the sport, but its solid, builds confidence, climbs with the most expensive of them, and will not require a 2nd on your house to purchase. My plans in the future are to upgrade the components to Shimano XTR and enjoy many long years of great trail, single track, and downhill riding with my Giant-

CRANK CRANK CRANK CRANK!!!!! and the brakes take time to get right.
Bike Setup:
2000 stock bike (Formula Mechanical disk brakes)
Bottom Line:
The bike rides great and I have been very happy with it, except for the crank/derailer,and to a lesser extent the brakes. The brakes take a while to adjust, and they make some noise, but overall the stopping power is impressive. However, if I ride on a mucky wet trail, the pads tend to stick to the disk. Not enough to lock up the tire at a good speed, but can be a pain when I'm stopped. Now the crank is a total piece of crap. I originally had a problem during shifting with the crank sucking the chain under the chain rings (causing damage to the frame). After a few months of riding with this the chain ring is damaged and missing teethe on the outer and middle rings. After only a few months I have to buy a new crank. UNSAT !!!!! Otherwise a solid bike, and at 585.00, can't complain too much, but that crank does suck.

I think Giant puts out a good product in the Ranier SE and I don't think I could have gotten this grade of a bike for what i paid from any of the above mentioned companies. I am an intermediate rider, i guess. I am not challenged much by Oklahoma trails and I trail ride at least once a week. I felt no need for a full suspension bike for what i do, but I am interested in trying downhilling in the near future, so i figured that disc brakes would be a necessity on my new bike. They work well and feel pretty cool having the only ranier SE at Oklahoma State University. In the past I have been pretty rough on bikes but the Ranier feels sturdy enough to handle my crashes and speed. Anyhow, it's a good bike. I got the yellow and black.

CODA Crank, LX front der, S545 Pedals, better saddle
Bottom Line:
Replace the saddle before your first ride. You should also upgrade the crank and Front Der. an LX is definitely an improvement here, so go nicer if you can.
Also check your disc brakes before the first ride. You should be able to see the pads evenly spaced away from the disc if you look at it just right. The squeaking will go away completely in about 6 to 8 rides and is more pronounced after a thorough cleaning.
My brakes were adjusted properly and seemed to function just fine in the showroom. However, my first ride I took some heavy drops and I found that the rear disc was loose on all screws but one. I guess it had been just finger tight and no one thought to finish the job. Anyway, It is fixed now and the brakes are so dependable I couldn't want any thing else.
The same first trip I bent a crank arm just slightly and on a later ride warped the outer chainring in a spill. I replaced them with a much lighter CODA crankset my LBS had sitting around. This ride is absolutely terriffic now uphil and down and the only thing I want to change is to lighten the front end a bit. 5 for the value and 4 for the Crank, front Der, and seat. What a terrible seat.

I fall on the pro side of this brake argument. My bike just came back from the shop to tighten some cables (still breaking in a little) and this thing was TIGHT. I locked the rear end up almost immediately. I respectfully suggest that those who think these are weak discs need to find a better shop to set the bike up properly. I don't have the finessed modulation of a hydraulic rig, but it is pretty close. I don't like riding V brake rigs as much now, and this is coming from someone who went into the buying process opposed to mech discs. FWIW, I had the bike on the roof while stopping at a different bike shop than the one I purchased the bike from. The head tech guy asked to take it for a spin; upon his return he commented that the brakes worked quite well for such a supposedly contraversial system. They do howl a bit at times, though...
NEways, I am enjoying the bike immensely. It encourages me to ride, and I know I have improved over the last 5 months, to the point where I kinda wish I had spent more money on a lighter bike. Oh well. Handles well without being twitchy. Front derailleur blows; I will upgrade this first, as it has left me sucking wind on a couple big climbs where I needed the first ring NOW, and it didn't downshift fast enough. Cranks are kind of crapola, but hey, the bike was really affordable. I may upgrade the riser to lighten up the front end. Getting air and maintaing a controlled landing is, at least for someone inexperienced in it, difficult given the bike's weight. I think the frame is worthy of upgrades, but I am not going to go crazy. Front derailleur, riser, cranks, probably in that order. Wheelsets are just too expensive. The M80 is a better value perhaps, but this bike fit me much better, FWIW.

if it was not for the brakes id be completely satisfied.in an attemt to get the stock brakes to stop, i changed pads 3 times, with no positive affects.one time i even snapped the front brake cable trying to get the bike slowed on a fast downhill![scary situation to say the least]. anybody considering this bike ought to save thier money and get the next cheapest model in the giant line-up.it comes with TROUBLE-FREE vee brakes [which cost far less and are a proven performer]plus you get all the good componets that come on rainer se.i feel that giant owes me about $200 ,thats how much i had to spend to get the hyd. set-up on the front, which in turn made my bike SAFE to ride aggresively.they [giant] should consider a national recall/reimburment program to help everyone that bought one of these bikes!right now i own a $950 rainer se,[bike+brake upgrade],that does not sit well with me at all.

I love the bike. I've heard lots of complaints about the brakes, but if you know how to tune a bike, they're fine. If you don't, go to a GOOD local shop. The Judys are sweet, they take a lickin and... The bike is an all around great value, I got mine for $599. I plan on upgrading the front derailer, but for an average person it will work. I fully recommend this bike to anyone. For a beginner, this is a great bike. For an intermediate rider, Also excellent because you can upgrade when needed. And for advanced, fi you don't have $ for something in the $1200-$2000 range, get this bike.

Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
Great value for the Weekend Warrior.
When I went bike shopping, I was looking at the $1000 price point but then this $700 bike caught my eye. What impressed me was the fork and brakes. It has a good recreational fork (RS Judy XC), whereas all the other $600-$700 bikes used low end, undamped forks. The Judy XC's tend to be on the $800-$1200 bikes. Then there are the disk brakes! I saw no other brands under $900 that offered disk brakes. It was a nice bonus.
The mechanical disk brakes work great. Plenty of stopping power! It took some getting used to the light touch though. If you mash down on the lever, you can easily lock up the rear tire. If you yank on the front lever you might do a reverse wheelie (not recommended). Fortunately you adapt pretty quickly and I haven't yet gone over the bars. I've had no trouble with squealing from the front brakes but the rear one will howl at certain speeds. At high speed and very low speeds the noise disappears. My only explanation as to why the rear ones do but the front brakes don't, is that it's resonating with the frame. The fork must dampen out any vibrations. I was thinking about putting rim brakes on the back tire to get rid of the squeal. I figured since 80% of your stopping power is on the front tire, "downgrading" to a rim brake in the back wouldn't be that much of a loss (except in the coolness category). That's when I noticed that there is no way to put rear rim brakes on this bike. The mount is simply not on the frame. Gotta save those grams! So I'm stuck with the occasional squeal. Oh well, I'm the only rider in my group with disk brakes (and they spent a whole lot more than I did).
The shifters and levers work intuitively. The only real trouble I've had with the bike is with the front derailleur (Shimano Alvino). Out on the trail, it came out of adjustment and it wouldn't shift into the small chain ring. Back to the shop for my free tune up. This might have been due to the low end component or just cable stretch. Time will tell... Either way, it's a cheap upgrade. The rear derailleur (Shimano Delore) shifts like a champ, even under pedal pressure. The cranks work just fine. The stock pedals worked fine too but I bought clipless pedals (and shoes) after two months of riding. Not a lick of trouble with the rims, hubs, tires, or tubes. Everything spins true.
As for the rest of the bike, it's got an awesome paint job, rides nice, and it's durable. If you are a racer or weight freak, you are probably not looking at sub $1000 bikes anyway. On the other hand, if you are new to mountain biking or moving up from a rigid mountain bike, consider the Giant. Its got room to upgrade, sure, but you'll be able to afford it. The one item that's really expensive to upgrade is a fork, and this bike already got a great one.
This bike screams value. Look at it this way, if you have $1400 to put down on a new bike, you're gonna find nicer hardtails on the market, but I'm positive they won't be TWICE as good as the Giant Reiner SE. Simply put, the bike works.

Great stiff frame for clydesdale riders, smooth angles, formula disc brakes.
Weaknesses:
Front transmission as well as the crankset and chainrings.
Bike Setup:
Titec bar ends, Saddle Selle Italia Mythos Trans Am, Race Face Crankset and Chainrings, and Time Atac Pedals.
Bottom Line:
This is a great bike for the price. The only problem I see is that the front transmission does not respond very well even in smooth terrain (don't even think about changing gears going uphill). The rear transmission works wonders no matter the conditions. The crankset and chainrings could be better and I just got tired of it and that's why I made the upgrade to Race Face which I highly recommend (I still haven't changed the front transmission but I recommend an LX or XT transmission). The saddle is extremely stiff and heavy, so if you can change it to a Selle Italia your buns will thank you for it. In my experience I am a heavy rider (I weigh 205 pounds) and I didn't want to buy a bike which would break and until now the bike has taken a beating and kept on ticking. I do feel that the bike is a bit heavy on the front so maybe you should upgrade to some light componentries on the front, i.e. carbon fiber bar or a light aluminum stem. All in all it is a great bike which you'll thank Giant for creating such a competitive bike at a decent price.

Bottom Line:
this is a follow-up on an earlier review. I've been beating on this thing quite a bit for the last month or so and I think I can now shed a bit more light on the strengths and weaknesses for anyone thinking about this model. I am still very happy with the Judy XC forks. I basically just ride around looking for ways to get airborne and/or break the bike and so far the judy has put up with all my crap, plus it makes going down stairs pretty easy. the rims could be lighter but they seem to be staying true despite the fact that I usually use stuff like curbs, stumps, and drop-offs to catch air when the oportunity presents itself. I guess I'm developing into a bit of a freerider, and so far the rims are keeping up. The riser bar is too wide for some of the singletrack I've been riding, but I wouldn't say it completely sucks. The shifters are okay, but my single biggest peeve about this bike is the deraileurs absotively-posilutely suck. If you ever need to shift through more than one gear in a big hurry and under any degree of power, you're screwed. I know you're supposed to back off the pedals a tad when you shift to 'save' your cogs... whatever. Sometimes you need another gear and you need it now and you can't afford to let up. Well not with this drivetrain! LoL. That's ok. I didn't expect XTR for $699. But I thought it desrved mention. The seat is hard as a frigging rock. I actually like the grips a lot, but I'm going to a flat bar so bye bye grips. The cranks are cheap, you can just tell, but they work. The pedals are cheap, but they work. The brakes still stop the bike extremely well, but you will find yourself fiddling with them a whole lot to get them working the way you want. They are sometimes very noisey, sometimes quiet... I dunno... probably upgrade them to hydro's... but they stop really well. http://www.formula-brake.it/support/index.htm "Formula are too cautious. 42.5mm or whatever they quote for end of housing to cable stop screw distance is too long. At that length there is not enough pre-tension in the cable for them to feel to bite well when you squeeze the lever - especially in the rear. Too little cable however and there's not enough brake arm travel. 33-37mm is probably a good length to use depending on how much cable your levers pull." (from another post on MD-1's) The reason I bought this bike was the frame. It seems very stiff, sturdy, light, and the angles are perfect. My problem is now I want FS. LoL. this bike will take you farther than anything else in its pricerange. it'll turn you into a full fledge MTB'er. Luckily, it's a great platform for upgrading (start with the cranks and the deraileurs... oh yeah and clipless pedals). Still 5 flaming chili induced turds for value, 4 for overall since the drivetrain is a little sorry.

WELL..., I think all those other people must of been smoking crack or something. These brakes are are excellent. They will toss you over the bars if you are not careful and they don't squeak. Last time I was on a mountain bike, seeing one with front shocks was a big deal, soooo... I guess I'm a born again newbie. Most of my 'riding' has been on MX bikes with motors and 13 inches of travel. My main concern when I set out for a MTB was the feel/geometry and not so much the actual weight, but that it 'felt light'. This bike has some component shortcomings like any $699 bike will but ergonomically it rocks and the Judy XC still trips me out (and saves my upper body). I had reservations about the mechanical disks based on my research but so far the only way I can get em to make noise is by intentionally feathering them to make the noise, any normal braking I do doesn't cause it... so no offense but all you mech disk detractors are just way too picky! Not to mention, when I squeeze the lever... the bike stops... there's a bottom line for ya' (wet or dry). Basically for a weekend warrior type that likes to try and ride trails he probably shouldn't (biff!)... and doesn't have a $2000 to drop on a bike, I think this is a decent steed. Cranks and shifters are as good as gone though (I mean c'mon Giant, Alivio I can understand.. sort of... but Suntour cranks??? ugh).
